To say I was shocked to see her standing in my front door would be an understatement. Why was she here early? Did Eddie know she arrived earlier than they planned? My eyes narrowed at her but that didn’t seem to faze her. The smug on her face only seemed to deepen. Ignoring me completely, she strolled into the house, pushing past me like she owned the place. I gritted me teeth, clenching my fist to keep from lashing out. “What are you doing here?” the question escaped my lips before I could stop myself. Lydia turned around sharply, an innocent smile flirting up her face. “Oh,” she said softly, a spark of amusement dancing in her eyes. “Eddie was expecting me to arrive tomorrow. But I planned a small gift for him.” She shrugged. I swallowed the lump in my throat, gripping my luggage so tight my knuckles turned white. Even now, when I thought I’d let go of everything , I couldn’t help the jealousy that surfed in my chest. Lydia was beautiful, even more than she was in the photos I’d seen. Beautiful blonde hair cascaded down her back in a wave of bouncing curls, a stark contrast to my short brown which framed my face. I’d decided to change my hairstyle and color from red and long to short and brown because I knew that was what Eddie preferred. Still, he hadn’t batted an eyelash my way, let alone notice me. Lydia had blonde long hair and he was head over heels for her. I smiled bitterly. Her puppy doe eyes assessed me and her lips pouted in disappointment. Just then, she suddenly looked frail, her eyes darted to the door frantically and she pretended to faint right there at my feet. I frowned, wondering what this was about but just as the door opened and Eddie stepped, it clicked. I watched as his eyes widened in alarm at seeing Lydia on the ground. He ran for her, carrying her into his arms swiftly while shooting daggers at me. “Adrienne Hanson!” he shouted, the veins on his neck protruding. “What did you do?” I was about to open my mouth and argue that I did nothing I didn’t even touch her but Lydia was faster. She held out a hand, then smiled softly. “Don’t blame her, Ed. I’m sure she only acted out of the vastness of her love for you. If I was in her shoes, maybe I’d have done the same thing.” Eddie shook his head. “You wouldn’t have,” he defended. “I know you, you’re kinder than that.” He turned his heated stare on me and all I saw there was loathing. “She, on the other hand, is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.” He clenched his jaw as he began moving to his bedroom, Lydia still nestled in his arms. Without looking back, he said; “Leave my house this instant and don’t try to reach me until I reach you.” Without waiting for his last words to drop, I began walking away – there was no reason left for me to stay here. When the news of our falling out got out, my parents would be livid but I knew Grandma would take my side. She always did and besides, she already had a countermeasure in place to help me. With that in mind, I stepped into the night taking nothing from the house but my luggage. All the gifts he’d sent to me in the past, I left them behind. After all, he hadn’t done those out of love but because he grandfather kept mounting pressure on him. Knowing Eddie wouldn’t appreciate it, I didn’t take any of his cars and opted to call a cab instead. I glanced out the window as we drove back to my apartment. Once we arrived at the sprawling building, I let myself out and looked up at it with a sense of longing. Once, this two story building had been my entire life. It had been my home and my place of comfort but for the past three years since the engagement, I had never step foot in it. Instead, I’d left it in the care of my best friend. That best friend now peeked through the blinds at me. Her eyes squinted then she came running to the door with a look of surprise on her face. When she saw me standing there, luggage in hand, she squealed. “Adrienne!” she gasped, her eyes already teary. Seeing her at the verge of tears broke the dam inside me and I broke down myself, the tears flowing like a river down my face as she held me in her arms. I don’t know how long we stood there crying, communicating without words all my hurt, pains and patience which resulted in nothing but more pain, but by the time the tears eventually dried out, we were both exhausted and the car had disappeared. Arlene looked around then pulled me into the house, snatching my luggage from me. “That jerk broke your heart!” she said coldly once we were both settled on a stool in front of the kitchen counter. “I’ll kill him.” I shook my head, sipping the steaming cup of coffees she’d given me. “There’s no need. Officially, we are still together. I don’t know if he plans to announce his relationship with Lydia in the future but for now, I have to keep going to these events with him. To keep up the charade.” Arlene looked at me like I was completely out of my mind. “Don’t tell me you’re still trying to make the jerk fall in love with you. Addy, that –” I patted her arm softly, urging her to drop the topic. “I’m a bit tired, Lili. Maybe tomorrow we can talk more about it? For now, I just want to… sleep and forget all about the last three years.” Her eyes softened and she nodded as understanding dawned on her. “Alright.” She answered, standing up from the stool to stand behind me and give my shoulder a soft squeeze. “I wish I could stay with you tonight but it’s my shift at the ICU. Your room is in immaculate condition though. I cleaned it out daily.” I smiled at her, reaching out to squeeze her hand. It was only then that I noticed the scrubs she was wearing. A wave of nostalgia hit me as I watched her. Arlene and I had graduated medical school together and while she’d went on to become a practicing nurse, I’d taken one year off to attend a culinary competition as the prodigy of one of the most renowned chefs. Although I’d won the competition with flying colors, it didn’t matter because that same year, I threw everything away to become the fiancé of the love of my life. I regretted that decision every single day. Just as I walked Arlene to the door, my phone buzzed with a new notification but I waited until she was gone to open it. It was a message from my mentor and looking at it shocked me. I didn’t think he would reach out to me, not after three years. The message said he’s sent me an urgent mail and I hurried to check it.LYDIAMy phone won't stop buzzing. In almost an hour, I'd already received more than a thousand notifications, and every single one made my blood pressure climb even higher. They were all singing her praises!I had three screens open on my desk, and every one of them was saying the same thing in different languages, with different words."Oh my God, Seren's performance was lovely!""She took that stage by force and conquered it.""I swear, I could taste her dish all the way from here. Did you see how her hands moved? There's no mistaking it. That's a chef right there!"I slammed my phone back down on the desk with force enough to crack it. I was tired of comments like these. My name was still out there, somewhere, but it was obvious who was stealing my spotlight.Seren.A small, hesitant knock sounded on the door, pulling at my focus, and my assistant popped her head in. There was a frightened look on her face as she took me in. Any other day, I'd have chuckled at how chicken she look
EDDIEMy grandmother unfolded the paper slowly, revealing a news article. Then she handed it to my grandfather who looked about ready to tear me to shreds. He held it up with trembling hands. "What is this, Edward?"I squinted at the headline. It was an article about the backstage arguement at the hospital. Written in bold capital letters ere the words: "HOME OR HOME: THE INSIDE STORY OF LYDIA WARREN'S LOVE AFFAIR!" A large photo plastered heavily across the front page showed Adrienne as she tumbled down the stairs while I had my hand around Lydia's waist. Lydia was afving away from the camera, but she still looked so sickly while Arlene on the other hand looked like an alien from space ready to devour us. I cringed at the image, wondering how we never noticed a reporter taking photos of us in a such a situation. Or wait, couldn't be that Arlene and Adrienne already knew about this? Did they hire someone to take all of these photos and paste it online just to make us look - "Don't p
EDDIEI couldn't get my mind off the masked woman. My car rolled through the city quite slowly, catching the lights and scenes of the city. Nathan was driving. He kept glancing at me in the rearview mirror, probably wondering why I was so quiet. He asked something about the competition and I answered without thinking. It was something about Miss Warren doing well but I could hardly remember what my reply was. My tablet sat open on my lap. I was supposed to be working but every few seconds my eyes drifted to the window instead, scanning the scenes outside for something. Anything. But there was nothing out there. Just streetlights and buildings sliding past in the same pattern they always did.I couldn't get the masked lady out of my head. There was something about the way she worked with the pots and pans that made it seem like an extension of herself. the sight of it was pulling at not just my heartstrings, but also a string of memory I just have buried. The thing was that, I didn'
ADRIENNEIt wasn't Eddie! The man I saw wasn't Eddie. But that didn't stop my heart from almost falling out of my chest. I was seeing things now? I swallowed nervously, clenching my fist tightly to stop the trembling in them.Clara had left after more apologies and Mr. Hubert sat in the driver's seat. He was saying something, but I wasn't listening. All I could think of was -"Adrienne?" His voice rang out, pulling me out of my head. "Did you hear me?" He glanced at me from the rearview mirror before looking back at the road. "Are you okay?"I forced air into my lungs and cleared my throat, forcing myself to look outside. I hadn't even realized we had begun moving, that we were so far from the theatre."I'm fine," I answered softly. "But I think we need to stop by the hospital."This time, Mr. Hubert stepped on the brakes. His head whipped around and his concerned gaze searched my body. "Are you okay?" He said breathlessly. "Is there -""I just want to see Arlene," I cut in, easing my
ADRIENNE I was exhausted! My whole body ached from exerting myself too much. Sweat rolled off my skin and dropped without a sound on the ground but I couldn't let my smile slip. I forced the smile to stay in place as I bowed stiffly. God, the ache in my back was killing me. I gritted my teeth, wincing as pain shot through me, blinding my vision and blocking out the sound of the excited audience. As soon as the stage hand extended his hand, I took it and allowed him to lead me back stage. By the time Clara sighted me, I was practically trembling. Still, she pulled me into a tight hug. I could almost feel the excitement that poured out of her. "That was - God, I have chills from watching you." She pulled away just to look at me and then pull me into a hug again. "That was so good." "Thank you," was all I could manage in between the pain that wrecked me. Three days was all the rest I'd allowed myself after that very ugly incident. It was barely enough to let me heal. Barely enoug
EddieIt was finally time to leave. I hadn't planned to stay long. Events like this weren't my thing, and I had only come to see Lydia. Now that she was done, I saw no reason to remain."You're not leaving already." A hand caught my sleeve and I glanced down to see Fred Jacobs, one of George's business partners, grinning like he'd caught me sneaking out of a meeting. "The main event hasn't even started.""I saw what I came to see.""Sit back down, Eddie. Trust me." He nodded toward the stage. "This next one's the whole reason half this room bought a table."I hadn't planned on staying, but I lowered myself back into the chair anyway."And now, please welcome to the stage - Seren Ellsworth," the host announced. The name caught my attention. Lydia had mentioned Seren before, calling her George's secret lover. I hadn't thought much of it then. But now, for some reason, I paused."Who is she?" I asked, low, more to myself than to Fred."Nobody knows," Fred answered anyway, leaning in li
ADRIENNE “Lydia is coming back?” the words tumbled out of my mouth before I could stop it. I hated how weak and stupid I sounded, but I couldn’t take it back. Eddie gave me a look like I was daft. He probably thought I was and that was why he never took me seriously. I’d spent three years try
ADRIENNE The first time my supposed ‘fiancé’, Eddie Quinn touched me in all of the three years we were together, it felt like punishment. That realization hit me long before his hands ever did. The night ended like every other night. The water rushed over me, hot and unforgiving, and for a few
ADRIENNE My heart stirred long after Marcus disappeared behind the door. There was a longing in my chest I didn’t understand and honestly, I wasn’t sure I wanted to. Still, it pulled me in. What was this? I recognized the feeling, the beginning of it, but did I want to acknowledge it? I hardly
ADRIENNE Arlene, despite all her protests, still helped me pick out a dress. For some reason, she’d gone with the color black, the kind that swallowed light. A single strap of diamonds held the dress up, leaving one shoulder bare. The bodice clung to my ribs and waist, and the skirt pooled at my f
