Arlene, despite all her protests, still helped me pick out a dress. For some reason, she’d gone with the color black, the kind that swallowed light. A single strap of diamonds held the dress up, leaving one shoulder bare. The bodice clung to my ribs and waist, and the skirt pooled at my feet, parting just enough to flash the silver blade of my stiletto. “You look like a goddess,” she said as she did the last touches of my makeup. “Stun Eddie speechless then walk away. He’ll definitely regret letting you go.” Now that I sat in the car which slowly drove me to the gala, I wanted nothing more than to still be in bed. I didn’t want to attend a gala and I definitely didn’t want to see Eddie again. But I didn’t have a choice. I needed this. I had made up my mind. Somethings simply had to be faced. I took a deep breath in as the car stopped in front of the venue. A lot of people were already gathered outside, cheering at their favorite celebrities and holding up banners and boards. I grimaced, pushing the door open and stepping out. The evening air hot me instantly but other than that, no one paid me any attention. After all, I was a nobody here. No one knew my identity and I was glad for that. I started walking for the door, but just as I neared it, I stopped. Eddie was walking hand in hand with Lydia and they were coming towards me. My eyes darted around quickly, looking for any place I could dodge into but it was no use, Lydia had already spotted me and she was waving at me. Eddie stood tall in a way that drew attention without effort. The noise and flashing of cameras around him didn’t touch him. How hair was perfectly in place, his suit smooth and sharp. Like always, he was impeccable, cold and detached. Except now, there was a slight frown on his face as he watched me. I would like to think that it was because of my small act of defiance of wearing my own dress instead of the one he bought for me, but I was sure little things like that didn’t affect him. My eyes strayed to Lydia who stood beside him. She looked gorgeous in a velvety dress that screamed opulence. Did he pick that out for her too? Why did I care? She looked fragile, but confident. I don’t even know how she managed to pull it off. Eddie slipped an arm around her waist, pulling her closer. I was surprised that I felt nothing at the sight of his affection for her. Maybe it was because I’d spent so long waiting for him that she getting nothing in return that I no longer cared for it. I looked away, and sighed. “You’re here, Adrienne!” Lydia said cheerfully, putting on a big smile for the camera. “I didn’t think you’d come, I mean. Eddie didn’t invite you, right? You must be here to stake your claims, right? After all, you’re his fiancée.” The crowd gasped. They’d heard what Lydia said about now, we were the center of attention. The cameras flashed fervently, reporters rushing forward to get the scope of the news. Even though I wanted to keep a low profile in this drama, Lydia had inevitably dragged me into the middle of it. Suddenly, Lydia sobered up and turned to Eddie. “Oh, I’m so sorry, Ed.” She said with a tinge of remorse in her voice. “I shouldn’t have done that. I know how you hate being in the spotlight…” “I’m fine.” Eddie replied dismissively. “Lets just go in first.” Lydia allowed a faint smile to cross her face as she side eyed me. The reporters were still taking photos, asking questions which might never be answered, but they’d gotten the story they had come here for. Lydia had made sure of that. I watched their backs as they entered inside, hardening my heart and ears against the incessant questions the media rained me with. “Are you really Eddie Quinn’s fiancée? Did you come here because of what’s going on online? Are you here to mark your territory?” “How do you feel seeing him in the arms of another woman? Is your relationship staggering?” “Netizens are asking why…” I tuned them out, walking into the hall after Eddie and Lydia. I was here to talk to Eddie after all and that needed to happen today. If things went anymore out of hand, my parents would find out about our fall out before I had the chance to tell them myself. And there was his grandfather… Although I’d been to these events countless times – always as Eddie’ plus one – I still felt very anxious and nervous. At least before I used to have the backing of Eddie even if he paid me no attention while we were here. Now though, I was completely alone and out of place and felt it really hard. “So, what does if feel like been the one in the bench?” a voice said behind me and my breath immediately caught. Although I just met the woman, I was sure I would recognize that venomous voice anywhere. “What do you want, Lydia?” I asked without turning to face her. She still appeared in my vision anyway, her annoying smug in place. “You must be feeling like shit now. Imagine he invited you here but still can’t give you the attention you so desperately want. I mean, I don’t even know what it feels like to be in your shoes.” I smiled bitterly. “I wouldn’t know too,” I said softly. “I’m not the one running after a man and aiming to break his relationship. But go on, I’m sure you know very well how to ruin other people’s lives just to please yourself.” I watched with satisfaction as the smug smile fell off her face and it crumpled into something between bitterness and anger. “What did you just say?” she growled, her eyes flashing with whatever horrible feelings she felt. “I said –” SLAP!!! The sound echoed through the hall and all eyes turned towards us. My cheek stung from the pain but what hurt most was my pride. I was very well aware that everyone was still looking at us, because besides the prickle I felt in my skin from where their eyes bored into me, I heard their whispers as well. “You dare defame me?” Lydia shouted at the top of her voice. A sly smile curled up her mouth. “All I wanted was to fight for something – someone I love. You have no right to stop me!” she raised her and again and I braced myself for the slap that never came. When I opened my eyes again, a man was standing between us. He had his back to me so I couldn’t see his face, but from how his shoulders were squared, the way he caught Lydia’s small hands in his and the way the hall went quiet told me one thing. This man was powerful. And he was protecting… me? “Dad?” Lydia called out, an expression of both shock and hurt passing across her face. Dad. This man was her father. A gasp rippled through the hall. Even though all I could see was his back, he didn’t seem old enough to have a daughter Lydia’s age. Something about the way he stood – still, unhurried, commanding – made the entire room hold its breath with him. Then he turned around. And the world stopped. Not slowed. Not tilted. It actually stopped. Along with my fragile heart. His eyes found mine before I could look away, dark and steady and completely unreadable, and for one suspended, impossible moment, I forgot every single thing – Eddie, the cameras, the burning hand print on my cheek, the three years I had just decided to bury tonight. I forgot all of it. Who are you? The thought came before I could stop it, quiet and dangerous, like a door swinging open onto a room I had no business entering. He held my gaze one second longer than a stranger should. Then the corner of his mouth moved – barely – and I felt it in my chest like a key turning in a lock I didn’t know existed. I am in so much trouble.ADRIENNE Arlene, despite all her protests, still helped me pick out a dress. For some reason, she’d gone with the color black, the kind that swallowed light. ADRIENNE “I’m in town, miss Hanson and I thought to reach out to you. I hope you’ve been well? Three years ago, when you chose to walk out such a promising career, didn’t think to advice you against it. Honestly, I believed it was your choice to make and hoped you were happy with it. But these last few years, my conscience has continued to bug me which is why I’m reaching out again with another opportunity for you to shine. There’s a show coming out soon where you can showcase your culinary skills. I hope you can give it a try – best, Mr. Hubert.” I stared at the email, reading and rereading it’s content before finally typing out a reply. “Thank you for your consideration, Mr. Hubert. I’ll have to get back to you on that. And since you are in town, I hope we can meet sometime? Yours, Adrienne Hanson.” Once I sent out the reply, I heaved a sigh of relief and picked up my phone, only to be shocked by the trending headlines and hashtags. #LydiaInternationalSensation #Lydiaa
ADRIENNE To say I was shocked to see her standing in my front door would be an understatement. Why was she here early? Did Eddie know she arrived earlier than they planned? My eyes narrowed at her but that didn’t seem to faze her. The smug on her face only seemed to deepen. Ignoring me completely, she strolled into the house, pushing past me like she owned the place. I gritted me teeth, clenching my fist to keep from lashing out. “What are you doing here?” the question escaped my lips before I could stop myself. Lydia turned around sharply, an innocent smile flirting up her face. “Oh,” she said softly, a spark of amusement dancing in her eyes. “Eddie was expecting me to arrive tomorrow. But I planned a small gift for him.” She shrugged. I swallowed the lump in my throat, gripping my luggage so tight my knuckles turned white. Even now, when I thought I’d let go of everything , I couldn’t help the jealousy that surfed in my chest. Lydia was beautiful, even more than she
ADRIENNE “Lydia is coming back?” the words tumbled out of my mouth before I could stop it. I hated how weak and stupid I sounded, but I couldn’t take it back. Eddie gave me a look like I was daft. He probably thought I was and that was why he never took me seriously. I’d spent three years trying to read Eddie Quinn, and I was no closer than the day I’d met him. “Yes, Lydia is back. You know she has been abroad. Her father insisted she finish her degree before…” He trailed off, as if the rest of the sentence didn’t need saying. Before she moved in. Before she took her rightful place by his side as the love of his life. Lydia Warren . For some reason, my mind kept circling back to her. I’d only seen her in photos and interviews on television, but everyone in our circles knew Lydia Warren – beautiful, classy, utterly devoted to Eddie in a way that made me feel like an intruder in my own engagement. “You’ll have to keep this from my grandfather, of course. I’ll pay you, if
ADRIENNE The first time my supposed ‘fiancé’, Eddie Quinn touched me in all of the three years we were together, it felt like punishment. That realization hit me long before his hands ever did. The night ended like every other night. The water rushed over me, hot and unforgiving, and for a few minutes, I let myself pretend it could wash away more than just the day. Three years of this. Three years of standing beneath a spray that never quite got warm enough, in a penthouse that never felt like home, waiting for a man who never looked at me twice. The bathroom filled with steam, soft white clouds wrapping around my silhouette and blurring the world beyond the glass into nothing. Here, I could almost forget. Forget that I was Adrienne Hanson, the invisible fiancée. I turned off the water and reached for a towel just as – “Click.” The sound of the door unlocking reached my ears, followed immediately by the door swinging open. My heart stopped. I spun around, clutching
