Chapter 05: The Day Everything Finally Fell Apart

I barely slept that night.

I lay in bed staring at the ceiling, unable to quiet the noise in my head.

Jason.

Natalie.

The document.

Ayman.

Everything blurred together into a chaos I couldn’t make sense of.

At some point, around five in the morning, I closed my eyes just to breathe. Just to try to stop shaking.

But one question kept coming back, over and over:

Why did everyone know before I did?

I shook my head, my eyes burning.

Not now.

Not time to cry.

Not yet.

I got up, my nightgown wrinkled, my hair a mess. I walked into the bathroom and looked at myself in the mirror.

I looked like a tired woman.

Drained.

Wounded.

But there was something else too.

A small flame.

A quiet anger.

Something beginning to rise.

I knew this day would be decisive.

I splashed cold water on my face. The shock jolted me awake instantly. I tied my hair back and looked at myself again.

Still tired.

Still fragile.

But… standing a little straighter.

When I walked out of the bathroom, my eyes immediately fell on the envelope sitting on the coffee table.

The envelope I had left there last night.

The envelope where my world had shattered.

I sat down slowly. My hands trembled slightly, but I picked it up. I couldn’t pretend this wasn’t real.

I opened it.

One word still struck me like a blow: Divorce.

And just below, in black and white:

Jason N. Lewis — Petitioner

Claire D. Moreau — Respondent

Primary Witness: Natalie Turner

I froze.

I reread the last line again.

Primary Witness: Natalie Turner.

What did that mean?

That she had participated?

That she had signed?

That she had approved it?

That she was officially involved in my destruction?

My heart twisted.

Literally.

Heat rose inside me. A silent rage. A fire burning slowly… but surely.

I set the papers back down on the table.

And for the first time in a long while, I whispered:

“They’re not going to finish me. Not this time.”

---

The Visit I Never Expected

Around nine o’clock, I went downstairs to get a glass of water.

The house felt too quiet.

Too empty.

Too heavy.

I had just taken a sip when I heard a knock at the door.

Once.

Then twice.

Then three times.

I set my glass down, irritated.

“Who could that possibly be?”

I walked to the door and opened it.

My heart stopped.

Natalie.

She was standing there.

In front of me.

Shiny hair.

A nervous smile.

That falsely innocent expression.

As if nothing had happened.

As if she hadn’t destroyed my life.

“Claire… hi,” she said softly.

I didn’t answer. I just looked at her. Studied her.

She swallowed, visibly uncomfortable.

“We need to talk…”

“No,” I replied calmly. “I don’t think we do.”

She stepped closer.

“Claire, please… let me explain. It’s not what you think.”

I smiled.

A cold smile. The kind that says: You’re lying again.

“Oh really? Then tell me what I think. I’m curious.”

She started to panic.

“It’s… it’s complicated. Jason… he was lost. At first I wanted to help you, I swear. But then… things got mixed up. I—”

“Stop.”

I raised my hand. She froze.

“You knew. For a long time.

You knew about the divorce filing.

You knew I was being humiliated.

You knew I was in the dark.

You knew I was going to suffer.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Claire… I’m sorry…”

I shook my head.

“You’re not sorry. You’re just scared Jason might leave you. You didn’t come for me. You came to secure your position.”

She stepped back as if I had slapped her.

But I wasn’t finished.

“And do you know what hurts the most?

It’s not that you betrayed me.

It’s that you looked me in the eyes yesterday, in my own house, knowing you helped turn this marriage into chaos… and helped him prepare that divorce.”

She burst into tears.

“Claire… I didn’t mean to… I… I love you like a sister…”

I smiled again. A sad smile.

“A sister? Then you have a strange definition of family.”

She wiped her tears quickly.

“Claire… listen! Jason isn’t happy with you. He would’ve eventually”

“Enough.”

My voice dropped. Slow. Cold. Sharp.

I stepped toward her.

“If Jason wasn’t happy, he could’ve left like an adult.

Not crawl behind my back.

Not sleep with you.

Not file for divorce in secret.

Not break me in silence.”

She lowered her head.

“I never meant for this to happen…” she whispered.

“Then why did you do it?” I asked quietly.

She bit her lip. Her fingers trembled.

And then she said the sentence that changed everything.

A sentence that stole my breath.

“Because I love him.”

I froze. My eyes widened.

She repeated it.

“I love him, Claire. I’ve loved him for a long time. Even before your marriage. And I always knew that one day, he would realize he never stopped loving me either.”

I stood there, motionless.

Silent.

I think my heart stopped beating for two seconds.

She kept going, as if finally vomiting out her truth:

“And yes… I signed.

Yes, I approved it.

Yes, I wanted him to leave you.

Because I was tired of being the shadow.

I was tired of hearing you talk about him every day while… I was dreaming about him every night.”

I gripped the doorknob until my hand hurt.

Natalie stepped closer, her hands shaking.

“Claire… I was jealous. I was tired of hearing about your life. I was tired of being the one supporting you while you… you had everything.”

Everything?

I let out a soft, desperate laugh.

“If only you knew what ‘everything’ looks like.

A husband who ignores you.

A life that passes you by.

A love that suffocates you.

And you watching me suffer in silence… hoping what? That he would choose you?”

She lowered her eyes, guilty.

“Well, you know what?” I finished.

“Take him.

Take what’s left of him.

Take his cowardice.

Take his betrayal.

Take his empty life.

But one thing is certain, Natalie…”

I looked her straight in the eyes.

“You will never have me again.”

And I closed the door.

Slowly.

Very slowly.

On her shattered face.

On her trembling mouth.

On her tear-filled eyes.

When the door finally shut, I collapsed to my knees.

No pain.

No sadness.

No.

A violent release.

Brutal.

Almost wild.

I breathed heavily.

Finally.

-

Minutes later, as I stood back up…

A noise.

Behind me.

I flinched.

I turned slowly.

And I saw him.

Jason.

Standing in the entryway.

I hadn’t even heard him come in.

His gaze was dark.

Hard.

Cold.

And in his hand…

A copy of the same document.

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he said the words I never imagined hearing from him:

“Claire… why are you being so stubborn? We’re signing this divorce. Whether you’re ready… or not.”

I froze.

My throat dry.

My heart frozen.

Then he added, his voice sharp as a blade:

“I’m done with you.”

And beside him, holding his hand, was Natalie.

Her tears were gone, replaced with a confident… almost victorious look.

Was that her definition of friendship?

And that was the moment…

Everything stopped.

This hollow, meaningless marriage… was over.

“Why are you saying that? Aren’t you tired of playing with other people’s feelings? Ayman is in love with someone it’s true and your eyes know exactly who. If your goal is to hurt me even more than you already have, know this: I’ve moved on. Now go. Leave me alone, once and for all.”“Claire, listen to me once and for all! I won’t repeat myself!” she snapped, then continued immediately.“Ayman loves you with all his heart. Even if it pisses me off because I love him, and I realized way too late that I could never live up to his love. He’s the only man who truly loved me the way I deserved. He’s head over heels for you, and that kiss we shared—it wasn’t even meant by him. I caught him off guard.”It was like a slap to my face.I stood frozen in front of her. • Too Late to Love me Now   Chapter 36: Rebuilding

I didn’t want any of that anymore. I didn’t want to suffer. To be the one who hurts, the one who forgives the unforgivable, the one who looks the other way while others act unjustly. I wanted to reconnect with myself, forget all those stories, forget the last words, forget that fake friendship, forget that budding love, and relearn how to care for myself. To love myself not through someone else’s eyes, but truly for who I am. It was no longer about opening my heart; it was about restoring it. So I decided to start over. Start over learning to love myself. Start over learning to rest. Start over learning to appreciate all of me. Start over working on the chains that made me dependent on others’ love and approval. This was something I should have done long ago. No more wasted tears. Hours later, late at night, Lili knocked at my door again. I opened it and held her close. My pain was hers, and knowing she was sad because of me made me even sadder. “Claire, are you feeling bet
