Chapter 3

Author: Little Shadow
I slowly climbed to my feet, then used the wall to support myself as I made my way to the door.

After exiting the hospital, I took a taxi to school. Upon arriving there, I limped my way over to the Academic Affairs Office using my crutch.

My homeroom teacher, Mrs. White, was busy handling the seating arrangements for the exam. When she spotted me, her brow instantly furrowed into a frown.

"Caleb? What are you doing here?"

"Mrs. White, my admission ticket was burned to ashes. Could I get a replacement?"

Mrs. White eyed me, her gaze drifting to my cast before moving away.

"Each student only gets one admission ticket. I already specifically reminded you all to be careful with it. Who else can you blame but yourself for your own carelessness in losing it?"

"I didn't lose it. Someone burned it—"

Mrs. White swiftly cut me off, her tone harsh, "Ms. Surrey called earlier to say that you were in a car accident and are suffering from psychological trauma, so you might come to school and cause a fuss. Well, the system is closed now, so there's no way you're getting a replacement!"

"But I didn't lose it. Selena burned it—"

"That's enough!" Mrs. White tossed her pen down on the table. "Caleb, I know you usually get good grades, but that doesn't give you the right to be so arrogant. You dropped the ball at this critical juncture, yet you're still trying to push the blame onto Ms. Surrey, the one sponsoring your studies?"

I stood frozen to the spot.

Five years ago, Selena arrived at the orphanage after losing her memories. She couldn't remember who she was or where she lived.

It wasn't long before she and I became inseparable friends. She stepped in to protect me from bullying many times, and when I was locked up to reflect on my actions, she would sneak over in the middle of the night to pick the lock and rescue me.

Then, one day, the Surrey family came, and it was discovered that Selena was their long-lost daughter.

The day Selena left to return to her family, she took my hand and said, "Caleb, I'll be back for you. Once I've steadied my position, I'll take you away from here."

She really did come back for me.

Not just that, but she also had the Surrey family sponsor my education, with my tuition and living expenses paid for by her. Every weekend, she would visit me and take me out to eat something good, buy my books, or accompany me as I studied.

Everyone was always praising her for being a kind girl and saying how lucky I was to have met someone as good as her.

I used to think so too. That was why I never expected her to betray me, and all for Aaron, to boot.

I despondently left the office, my legs subconsciously taking me to the honors board by the main academic building. Photos of the top 100 scorers in the entire city for the mock exams had been stuck to the board, with my photo and name at the very top of the list.

In the photo, I was smiling widely and brimming with confidence, like someone who had been living in the dark, finally seeing the light.

Yet, here I stood beneath my photo, leg in a cast, while my whole life was in shambles.

"Caleb?" a voice called out from behind me.

I stiffened before turning around to see Aaron and Selena standing a few steps away from me.

Upon seeing that it was indeed me, Aaron put on an expression of alarm and stepped closer to Selena.

"Caleb, why did you sneak out of the hospital? And you were spreading the lie that Selena burned your admission ticket too!"

Several classmates passing by stopped in their tracks and peered over curiously.

"Is that Caleb Lindt? I heard he was in an accident. Why is he still here, causing a scene?"

"To think that Ms. Surrey sponsored him for all these years! Who would've expected him to be so ungrateful?"

I was shaking all over from the sheer extent of my fury. Raising my crutch, I swung it right at Aaron.

However, before it could land, Selena seized it in a tight grip before shoving me back hard.

I stumbled back and slammed right into the glass casing of the honors board.

The sound of shattering glass exploded in my ears as many broken shards stabbed into my back. Immediately, warm blood was flowing down my back.

At last, I crashed to the ground face up, the shards in my back digging even deeper into my body. Every inch of my skin was throbbing with pain.

Coincidentally, I landed right below my own smiling photo.

"Selena, do you seriously not care about the 15 years of history that we shared? The bond we formed?"

I lay on the floor, voice so hoarse that it was barely audible.

"Back then at the orphanage, you were the one who rescued me from the isolation room…"

Blood from my injuries was spreading across the floor and staining the ground red.

"You said that you would take me away, out of the darkness…"

Selene suddenly scoffed. "The bond we formed?"

Crouching in front of me, she pinned me with an icy gaze. "Caleb, why do you think I headed to the orphanage back then? Why, of all the children there, did I choose to rescue you?"

Since the evidence I provided was quite comprehensive, it was enough for the people involved to be brought to justice. In order to preserve their reputation, the Surrey family called for an emergency family board meeting overnight. Not only did they strip Selena of her inheritance rights, but they also announced that they would kick her out of the core management team.As for the Lindt family, their fates were much worse.I sent the video of Selena insulting Aaron to him. Seeing the woman he loved humiliate him, Aaron was thoroughly pushed over the edge and went crazy.Every day, he would lock himself up in his room and rave about how he was the city's top scorer. Whenever anyone dared to approach him, he would bite them.Due to the earlier scandal, Lindt Group had already been boycotted by most of the Internet. Now, their cash flow collapsed, and they had no choice but to officially declare bankruptcy. Our parents had no choice but to sell their villa and luxury cars. Then, burd

After that party, the Lindt family and Selena became the targets of online criticism and outrage.Aaron, unable to withstand the endless accusations and the pressure from the police investigation, was thoroughly broken mentally. He spent his days hiding in his room, muttering to himself.Lindt Group's stocks plummeted, and it was now on the brink of bankruptcy. As for Selena, she was summoned by the police many times. Although she had found a scapegoat in the form of that driver who had received her five million dollars, the Surrey family's reputation had still taken a severe hit because of her actions. Hence, the family board was even considering stripping her of her management authority. In the dead of night, exhausted from running herself ragged and the relentless blame from others, Selena dragged her weary body back to her private villa.Upon pushing open the door, she spotted me sitting quietly by the floor-to-ceiling window, reading a book. The moonlight from outside played

A group of police officers swarmed into the hall. The leader raised his official badge and spoke in a stern voice."Who here is Aaron Lindt? We've received a report along with conclusive evidence that shows that you're suspected of attaining the core exam questions through illegal means, which is a serious offense! Your results have been frozen. Please return with us immediately to aid in the investigation!"The entire venue was thrown into an uproar. The reporters' cameras flashed incessantly, most of them aimed at the dumbfounded Aaron, who stood rooted to the spot."What? So, he only got the top score by cheating?""He bought the exam questions? That's a criminal offense!"Aaron's legs gave up on him, sending him slumping to the floor. He tried to play the same trick of using his depression to garner sympathy again, cradling his head while putting on a pained expression. "No, I didn't do that! I don't know anything! Why are you forcing me like this? My depression is acting

Late into the night, the villa was plunged into silence.I carefully picked my way through the surveillance cameras' blind spots before slipping silently into Selena's study. My subservient attitude over the past two weeks had succeeded in finally making her drop her guard against me, so she no longer locked the study's door.Turning on her laptop, I saw that a password was needed. My fingers hovered over the keyboard briefly before I input Aaron's birthday. When that proved to be the correct password, I curled my lips in self-mockery and had to fight down the ugly feelings that wanted to rear their heads.I began searching through her laptop, at last coming across a hidden folder that contained what I was looking for.The first file was a record of an overseas transaction paid to the driver involved in my accident. Selena had paid him five million dollars. As it turned out, my ten years of hard work and one leg were only worth five million dollars to her. However, when I opene

The floor was covered in red.I was collapsed in a pool of blood, face practically colorless, while a ghastly wound slashed my wrist, so deep that the white of bone was peeking through. For the first time ever, the usually calm and steady Selena panicked. She lunged forward and grabbed my wrist with shaking hands. Warm blood squelched out from between her fingers."Caleb Lindt! Wake up! Who gave you permission to die!"Her eyes were bloodshot as her screams echoed in the corridors. The doctor who had come rushing took a step back in fear at her reaction.Outside the emergency treatment room, Selena stared at her hands, which were covered in crimson blood, while her entire body shook violently. She forced herself to take deep breaths, all the while repeating the same words in her mind, "I'm just worried that Aaron will feel guilty if Caleb dies. Yes, that's all. It's for Aaron's sake…"Nonetheless, no matter how hard she tried, she failed to suppress the panic and fear that thre

As the sharp edge of the glass sliced through my skin, I didn't even feel a hint of pain. On the contrary, there was a never-before-felt sense of freedom, of release.Warm blood gushed from the wound, sliding down my arm to my shackled leg and then dripping to the floor. My consciousness started to waver, and my life began to flash before my eyes.15 years ago, a sedan lost control and roared straight toward us. Aaron was so terrified that he could only stand there, frozen. I was the one who shoved him out of the way, only to end up scraping my knees bloody against the rough surface of the road.Yet, instead of receiving sympathy and concern from my parents, what I got was Aaron huddling in Mom's embrace as he pointed a finger at me, eyes wide in horror. "I-It was Caleb… Caleb wanted to push me into the car's path…"The slap Mom gave me caused my ears to ring intensely, and nobody cared about the blood that trickled from the corner of my lips. In fact, Dad even went as far as to t
