Chapter 4

Author: Little Shadow
Not waiting for me to answer, Selena continued, "It was because of Aaron."

She stood up and gazed down at me imperiously. "Back then, Aaron was burdened with guilt over you being sent to the orphanage."

Pausing, she shifted her gaze from me to Aaron.

"To help him resolve the feelings weighing on him, I sought you out at the orphanage and purposely treated you well, all so you would be utterly loyal to me. I wanted you to feel indebted to me and be as subservient as a follower for the rest of your life, thereby proving that everything was your fault.

"As for why? Because people like you were never meant to have the light. You only deserve to be trampled underfoot."

I felt like I had been struck by thunder, my mind going blank.

As it turned out, those 15 years of pulling me out of the dark, the warm milk on sleepless nights, the flashlight held over my textbooks…

None of it had ever been out of love.

It was all just part of a game to please Aaron, a game that lasted for 15 entire years.

"Take him back to the hospital so he doesn't affect Aaron's mood."

Before I could regain my composure from that shocking revelation, Selena left orders for her bodyguards before turning to leave with Aaron.

Two bodyguards approached me and lifted me to my feet by the arms.

I didn't struggle, not even having the energy to so much as twitch a muscle.

After I was brought back to the hospital, I was tossed onto the bed.

When a nurse came in to check on me and spotted the glass shards in my back, she gasped.

"How did you get so hurt?"

Instead of answering, I simply stared up at the ceiling with unblinking eyes.

I didn't know how much time had passed before the room door swung open again.

"Caleb Lindt!"

It was my mother.

Twisting my head, I saw her and my father standing at the door.

Mom rushed over and landed a slap right on my cheek.

"You selfish boy! Did you purposely get yourself hurt so that you could frame Aaron? You're trying to make everyone think he's a ruthless person, aren't you?"

Staring at the scowling woman before me, I finally screamed back, "Aaron was the one who pushed me all those years ago! This time around, it was also he who told Selena to break my leg!"

"You're spouting nonsense!"

Mom raised her hand again, but Dad stopped her.

He shot me a disgusted look as he said, "Aaron is your biological older brother. Why would he want to harm you? Ms. Surrey told us that there was something mentally wrong with you, and from the looks of it, she's right."

In an instant, all the energy drained from me.

The same thing was happening again.

15 years ago, no one had believed me.

15 years later, they still didn't believe me.

"Call the nurse over to sedate him," Selena's voice sounded from the doorway.

Nobody knew when she had arrived, but she was currently leaning against the doorframe with a cold expression.

"He's emotionally unstable and needs to rest."

The next thing I knew, I was waking up in the middle of the night, alone in the hospital room.

My phone had been placed on my bedside table, so I reached over to grab it and dial a number.

"Hello, I would like to make a police report."

I kept my voice soft, not wanting to alert the nurses out in the corridor.

"Selena Surrey deliberately tried to kill me by setting up a car accident. With my leg broken, I can't even sit for my SAT."

Two police officers came in no time to question me about the case.

However, I was barely halfway through my story when Selena entered and calmly said, "I'm sorry, sirs, but my brother here was in an accident and was traumatized by the event. The mental stress resulted in him becoming paranoid and thinking that everyone is out to get him."

Handing the police officers a document folder, she continued, "Inside here is a confession letter by the drunk driver responsible for the accident and a compensation agreement. He's already admitted to the crime.

"Besides that, there's also a record of all the psychiatric medications my brother is taking. He's been seeing a psychiatrist all the while, but he hasn't been doing too well recently and is always letting his thoughts run wild."

The police officers accepted the folder and flipped through the papers, then they glanced at me.

I watched their expressions change and felt my body go cold.

"Mr. Lindt, please get enough rest and stop overthinking things."

"She's lying! You have to believe me!"

I desperately wanted to chase after them, but I couldn't even walk steadily on my own two feet, which only made me seem even more like a madman.

After the police officers left, Selena locked the room door before taking out a metal chain. Fastening the shackle around my leg, she secured the other end to the hospital bed.

A complex look flickered across her eyes as she leaned over to pat my face.

"Since you're being so disobedient, you'll just have to remain here until Aaron finishes the exam. Do cooperate."

With that, she left, shutting the door behind her.

I looked down at the shackle around my leg, then slowly slipped my hand under my pillow, where I had hidden a glass shard from earlier.

A second later, the glass shard was resting on the skin of my own wrist.

Since the evidence I provided was quite comprehensive, it was enough for the people involved to be brought to justice. In order to preserve their reputation, the Surrey family called for an emergency family board meeting overnight. Not only did they strip Selena of her inheritance rights, but they also announced that they would kick her out of the core management team.As for the Lindt family, their fates were much worse.I sent the video of Selena insulting Aaron to him. Seeing the woman he loved humiliate him, Aaron was thoroughly pushed over the edge and went crazy.Every day, he would lock himself up in his room and rave about how he was the city's top scorer. Whenever anyone dared to approach him, he would bite them.Due to the earlier scandal, Lindt Group had already been boycotted by most of the Internet. Now, their cash flow collapsed, and they had no choice but to officially declare bankruptcy. Our parents had no choice but to sell their villa and luxury cars. Then, burd

After that party, the Lindt family and Selena became the targets of online criticism and outrage.Aaron, unable to withstand the endless accusations and the pressure from the police investigation, was thoroughly broken mentally. He spent his days hiding in his room, muttering to himself.Lindt Group's stocks plummeted, and it was now on the brink of bankruptcy. As for Selena, she was summoned by the police many times. Although she had found a scapegoat in the form of that driver who had received her five million dollars, the Surrey family's reputation had still taken a severe hit because of her actions. Hence, the family board was even considering stripping her of her management authority. In the dead of night, exhausted from running herself ragged and the relentless blame from others, Selena dragged her weary body back to her private villa.Upon pushing open the door, she spotted me sitting quietly by the floor-to-ceiling window, reading a book. The moonlight from outside played

A group of police officers swarmed into the hall. The leader raised his official badge and spoke in a stern voice."Who here is Aaron Lindt? We've received a report along with conclusive evidence that shows that you're suspected of attaining the core exam questions through illegal means, which is a serious offense! Your results have been frozen. Please return with us immediately to aid in the investigation!"The entire venue was thrown into an uproar. The reporters' cameras flashed incessantly, most of them aimed at the dumbfounded Aaron, who stood rooted to the spot."What? So, he only got the top score by cheating?""He bought the exam questions? That's a criminal offense!"Aaron's legs gave up on him, sending him slumping to the floor. He tried to play the same trick of using his depression to garner sympathy again, cradling his head while putting on a pained expression. "No, I didn't do that! I don't know anything! Why are you forcing me like this? My depression is acting

Late into the night, the villa was plunged into silence.I carefully picked my way through the surveillance cameras' blind spots before slipping silently into Selena's study. My subservient attitude over the past two weeks had succeeded in finally making her drop her guard against me, so she no longer locked the study's door.Turning on her laptop, I saw that a password was needed. My fingers hovered over the keyboard briefly before I input Aaron's birthday. When that proved to be the correct password, I curled my lips in self-mockery and had to fight down the ugly feelings that wanted to rear their heads.I began searching through her laptop, at last coming across a hidden folder that contained what I was looking for.The first file was a record of an overseas transaction paid to the driver involved in my accident. Selena had paid him five million dollars. As it turned out, my ten years of hard work and one leg were only worth five million dollars to her. However, when I opene

The floor was covered in red.I was collapsed in a pool of blood, face practically colorless, while a ghastly wound slashed my wrist, so deep that the white of bone was peeking through. For the first time ever, the usually calm and steady Selena panicked. She lunged forward and grabbed my wrist with shaking hands. Warm blood squelched out from between her fingers."Caleb Lindt! Wake up! Who gave you permission to die!"Her eyes were bloodshot as her screams echoed in the corridors. The doctor who had come rushing took a step back in fear at her reaction.Outside the emergency treatment room, Selena stared at her hands, which were covered in crimson blood, while her entire body shook violently. She forced herself to take deep breaths, all the while repeating the same words in her mind, "I'm just worried that Aaron will feel guilty if Caleb dies. Yes, that's all. It's for Aaron's sake…"Nonetheless, no matter how hard she tried, she failed to suppress the panic and fear that thre

As the sharp edge of the glass sliced through my skin, I didn't even feel a hint of pain. On the contrary, there was a never-before-felt sense of freedom, of release.Warm blood gushed from the wound, sliding down my arm to my shackled leg and then dripping to the floor. My consciousness started to waver, and my life began to flash before my eyes.15 years ago, a sedan lost control and roared straight toward us. Aaron was so terrified that he could only stand there, frozen. I was the one who shoved him out of the way, only to end up scraping my knees bloody against the rough surface of the road.Yet, instead of receiving sympathy and concern from my parents, what I got was Aaron huddling in Mom's embrace as he pointed a finger at me, eyes wide in horror. "I-It was Caleb… Caleb wanted to push me into the car's path…"The slap Mom gave me caused my ears to ring intensely, and nobody cared about the blood that trickled from the corner of my lips. In fact, Dad even went as far as to t
