I've gotten into an accident three days before my SAT exam. As a result, my right leg is completely busted. As Selena Surrey stands before my hospital bed, she suddenly reveals the truth. "I'm the one who arranged the accident." She points at my broken leg, which is still sealed in a cast. A cruel smile blossoms on her face. "It's your fault for displeasing Aaron. You only broke one leg anyway. It's way better than watching Aaron continue to waste away in depression." I widen my eyes in disbelief. As I struggle against Selena, I leave fresh scratches on her arms. But Selena just pushes me away coldly, only to pat me on the head gently as she did in the past. "I think I understand how your parents feel now. No wonder they insisted on sending you to the orphanage back then. It's true that you aren't as likeable as Aaron." Aaron Lindt is my biological older brother. 15 years ago, I had gotten hurt just to save him from getting hit by a car. But he cried to our parents, claiming that I was the one who had pushed him. Our parents were quick to send me to an orphanage, completely disregarding my injuries. Just as I thought it was over for me, Selena showed up and promised me that she'd be the person I could rely on for the rest of my life. But now, she decides to ruin me with her own hands for the sake of the same person she has promised to protect me from.

Chapter 1

Chapter 1

It felt like an invincible hand was squeezing my throat tightly. Bitterness welled in me, but I didn't even have the energy to be angry.

Meticulously wiping away the blood droplets on her arm, Selena Surrey said indifferently, "Due to your argument with Aaron a few days ago, he fell into a depression again and couldn't even work on the mock exam papers. Caleb, if you had only been a little more obedient, would things have turned out this way?"

I was trembling violently, the agony of my broken leg stabbing deep into me, but that was still nothing compared to the chill that swept through me at her words.

"So, you decided to ruin my chances at the SAT?"

Selena tilted her head to look at me, and I didn't see even a hint of remorse in her eyes.

"I'm doing this to protect you, aren't I?"

She reached out a hand and placed it on my shoulder, just like how she always used to.

Once upon a time, that hand had held up a flashlight to help me illuminate my textbook late at night in the orphanage.

Now, it seemed to press down on me coldly while its owner said the cruelest words.

"With your broken leg, you won't be able to attend the SAT, and Aaron will be able to become the city's top scorer without any pressure. Once he's in a good mood, he'll naturally stop torturing himself with his depression, and your parents won't take their anger out on you anymore.

"Caleb, isn't sacrificing your chance at the test in exchange for the entire family's peace a worthwhile thing? Just be good, alright?"

That same line again.

Ever since I was young, everyone had always been telling me to "be good".

The day I was sent to the orphanage, Mom had said with reddened eyes, "Caleb, be good. Your dad and I will come again in a few days to pick you up."

Yet, for 15 whole years, they hadn't visited even once.

When I was being bullied in school, the teacher had said, "Be good and stop causing trouble. Why do you think they only pick on you?"

Even when I finally achieved good enough grades to get into an elite high school, Dad had only reminded me coldly, "Ms. Surrey will pay for your tuition fee, so be good and don't cause any trouble for her."

I had been good for the past 15 years, yet all that had gotten me was a broken leg caused by the person I trusted most in the world.

"You said that you would protect me for the rest of our lives!"

I struggled to sit up, but the action tugged at my broken leg. The sheer agony sent me collapsing back onto the bed in spasms.

"You said it yourself! Back when we were in the orphanage, you promised that you would save me!"

However, Selena simply stood there and gazed at me with distant eyes. It was an entirely unfamiliar look to me, and also incredibly repulsive.

"Selena Surrey, what gives you the right!" I bellowed. Seizing her wrist, I dug my nails deep into her skin. "What right do you have to make that decision for me! What gives you the right to ruin my SAT!"

Selena frowned slightly before yanking her wrist out of my grip. My hand slid down her arm, dropping limply back onto the bed.

"Calm down, Caleb. Being so agitated will only hinder your recovery."

She was about to say more, but then her phone rang.

After a quick glance at her phone screen, her gaze softened.

It was a sort of gentle, warm look that I had never seen on her before.

Turning on her heel, she headed toward the door, and right before she left, I heard her say gently, "Don't worry, Aaron, I'm here… Yes, everything has been handled, so you can focus on your revision with peace of mind."
