Chapter 2

Author: Little Shadow
When Selena returned, she was holding a transparent file folder.

As I got a good look at what was inside it, my eyes widened.

It was my SAT admission ticket.

A few days ago, Selena had told me that she was worried about me losing it, so she had volunteered to keep it for me.

At the time, I had marveled at how thoughtful she was, but now, my heart skipped a beat in my chest.

"Selena, give my admission ticket back to me!"

I struggled to get out of the bed, but with my leg stuck in a cast, even the slightest movement was enough for a cold sweat to break out on my back.

Selena stood before me, her expression calm and even tinged with a hint of confusion.

"Caleb, did you not understand what I said just now?" Shaking the file folder at me, she went on, "Only if you don't sit for your SAT will Aaron be able to take his in peace. In that case, what do you need this for?"

My entire body trembled, though I wasn't sure if it was from rage or pain.

"Selena, give it back to me… Please…" I had never spoken in such a humble tone before as I begged her, "I promise that I'll go far away after the exam. I won't return to the Lindt family or be an eyesore for you all anymore, okay?"

Selena's figure was bathed in light and shadow as she stood there. For a brief moment, a complex look flashed across her eyes.

"Caleb, what's the point of this?"

Taking a lighter from her pocket, she began playing with it by flicking the lid open and closed, a soft clicking accompanying every motion.

"Aaron told me just now that he dreamed you had come to the exam venue to kick up a fuss. That scared him so much that he couldn't sleep for the rest of the night. What if you go to the venue and agitate him so much that he can't even step foot inside?"

A small flame burst to life above the lighter before extinguishing.

"Be good, okay? Don't make things difficult for me."

I stared at the lighter, feeling as though a hand was squeezing my heart tightly.

"No!"

A burst of energy shot through me, and I somehow managed to roll off the bed. Despite the agony coming from my leg, I crawled toward her as quickly as I could.

At that moment, the room door abruptly flew open before Aaron Lindt rushed inside.

His face was pale, and he had a dazed look as he grabbed Selena's arm.

"Selena, is it because I'm just that useless? I get the feeling that Caleb hates me…"

His movement jarred Selena's hand, and in the next second, the lighter's flame was licking at the admission ticket.

The fire spread incredibly quickly. In the blink of an eye, only a pile of ashes remained.

Selena was momentarily stunned, only able to stare at the ashes on the floor. Then, she lifted her head to look at me. She had only meant to threaten me with burning the admission ticket; she hadn't meant to actually go through with it.

"Caleb, I didn't mean to—"

"If Caleb hates me that much, I'll just give him the spot of the city's top scorer!" Aaron interrupted her, his voice shaking slightly. "I'll give Mom and Dad back to him too! I'll just go die! My dying will solve everything!"

He moved as if to bash his head against the wall, and Selena hastily stopped him.

"Aaron, stop that!"

An overwhelming wave of rage surged through me, thoroughly burning away all sense of reason.

"Aaron Lindt, you crazy asshole!" I roared while pushing myself off the floor and to my feet.

When Selena saw that, her gaze instantly turned frosty. She instinctively reached out to shove me hard, the force sending me crashing into the bed.

As I fell backward, the back of my head slammed against the edge of the metallic bed frame, causing black spots to dance in my vision and a sweet, coppery taste to fill my mouth.

"Caleb!" A hint of panic threaded Selena's voice as she took a step toward me.

"Selena…"

Aaron tugged at her sleeve from behind, his face deathly pale and his body swaying slightly, as though he were about to fall over at any moment.

However, with Selena's back turned to him, he shot me an evil smile.

Selena halted in her tracks to look back at the visibly shaken Aaron. Immediately, her panic vanished, and when she turned back to me, it had changed into revulsion.

"Must you be like this? Will you only be satisfied once you've made a huge mess of things?"

I coughed, blood dribbling from my lips. I was unable to speak, nor did I want to.

Beside Selena, Aaron was still putting on an act, panting as he said in a strained voice, "Selena, let's go. I don't want to stay here any longer. I'm so scared…"

Selena didn't bother sparing me another glance, instead taking Aaron's arm and leaving the room with him.

Since the evidence I provided was quite comprehensive, it was enough for the people involved to be brought to justice. In order to preserve their reputation, the Surrey family called for an emergency family board meeting overnight. Not only did they strip Selena of her inheritance rights, but they also announced that they would kick her out of the core management team.As for the Lindt family, their fates were much worse.I sent the video of Selena insulting Aaron to him. Seeing the woman he loved humiliate him, Aaron was thoroughly pushed over the edge and went crazy.Every day, he would lock himself up in his room and rave about how he was the city's top scorer. Whenever anyone dared to approach him, he would bite them.Due to the earlier scandal, Lindt Group had already been boycotted by most of the Internet. Now, their cash flow collapsed, and they had no choice but to officially declare bankruptcy. Our parents had no choice but to sell their villa and luxury cars. Then, burd

After that party, the Lindt family and Selena became the targets of online criticism and outrage.Aaron, unable to withstand the endless accusations and the pressure from the police investigation, was thoroughly broken mentally. He spent his days hiding in his room, muttering to himself.Lindt Group's stocks plummeted, and it was now on the brink of bankruptcy. As for Selena, she was summoned by the police many times. Although she had found a scapegoat in the form of that driver who had received her five million dollars, the Surrey family's reputation had still taken a severe hit because of her actions. Hence, the family board was even considering stripping her of her management authority. In the dead of night, exhausted from running herself ragged and the relentless blame from others, Selena dragged her weary body back to her private villa.Upon pushing open the door, she spotted me sitting quietly by the floor-to-ceiling window, reading a book. The moonlight from outside played

A group of police officers swarmed into the hall. The leader raised his official badge and spoke in a stern voice."Who here is Aaron Lindt? We've received a report along with conclusive evidence that shows that you're suspected of attaining the core exam questions through illegal means, which is a serious offense! Your results have been frozen. Please return with us immediately to aid in the investigation!"The entire venue was thrown into an uproar. The reporters' cameras flashed incessantly, most of them aimed at the dumbfounded Aaron, who stood rooted to the spot."What? So, he only got the top score by cheating?""He bought the exam questions? That's a criminal offense!"Aaron's legs gave up on him, sending him slumping to the floor. He tried to play the same trick of using his depression to garner sympathy again, cradling his head while putting on a pained expression. "No, I didn't do that! I don't know anything! Why are you forcing me like this? My depression is acting

Late into the night, the villa was plunged into silence.I carefully picked my way through the surveillance cameras' blind spots before slipping silently into Selena's study. My subservient attitude over the past two weeks had succeeded in finally making her drop her guard against me, so she no longer locked the study's door.Turning on her laptop, I saw that a password was needed. My fingers hovered over the keyboard briefly before I input Aaron's birthday. When that proved to be the correct password, I curled my lips in self-mockery and had to fight down the ugly feelings that wanted to rear their heads.I began searching through her laptop, at last coming across a hidden folder that contained what I was looking for.The first file was a record of an overseas transaction paid to the driver involved in my accident. Selena had paid him five million dollars. As it turned out, my ten years of hard work and one leg were only worth five million dollars to her. However, when I opene

The floor was covered in red.I was collapsed in a pool of blood, face practically colorless, while a ghastly wound slashed my wrist, so deep that the white of bone was peeking through. For the first time ever, the usually calm and steady Selena panicked. She lunged forward and grabbed my wrist with shaking hands. Warm blood squelched out from between her fingers."Caleb Lindt! Wake up! Who gave you permission to die!"Her eyes were bloodshot as her screams echoed in the corridors. The doctor who had come rushing took a step back in fear at her reaction.Outside the emergency treatment room, Selena stared at her hands, which were covered in crimson blood, while her entire body shook violently. She forced herself to take deep breaths, all the while repeating the same words in her mind, "I'm just worried that Aaron will feel guilty if Caleb dies. Yes, that's all. It's for Aaron's sake…"Nonetheless, no matter how hard she tried, she failed to suppress the panic and fear that thre

As the sharp edge of the glass sliced through my skin, I didn't even feel a hint of pain. On the contrary, there was a never-before-felt sense of freedom, of release.Warm blood gushed from the wound, sliding down my arm to my shackled leg and then dripping to the floor. My consciousness started to waver, and my life began to flash before my eyes.15 years ago, a sedan lost control and roared straight toward us. Aaron was so terrified that he could only stand there, frozen. I was the one who shoved him out of the way, only to end up scraping my knees bloody against the rough surface of the road.Yet, instead of receiving sympathy and concern from my parents, what I got was Aaron huddling in Mom's embrace as he pointed a finger at me, eyes wide in horror. "I-It was Caleb… Caleb wanted to push me into the car's path…"The slap Mom gave me caused my ears to ring intensely, and nobody cared about the blood that trickled from the corner of my lips. In fact, Dad even went as far as to t
