It was still at the clearing, the eerie quietness creeping in like a thick fog after battle. Serena panted, her breath coming in quick gasps, her chest rising and falling as the adrenaline of the fight began to evaporate from her system. The rogue wolves were spread out over the ground: some were huddled in defeat, while others started to turn back into their human forms, moaning in pain. But now there was nothing left but deafening silence—broken only by the wind ruffling the trees and the distant hoot of an owl.
Lucian stood next to her, breathing in deep, steady breaths. His stare didn't waver from Serena, breathing heavily as she surveyed the mayhem around her, heart racing, not from the exertion, but the chaos bubbling beneath the surface. A whirlpool of thoughts swirled her mind, her mother’s words ringing through her head.
“You’re more like your father…You’ve changed." Isolde’s words still echoed in her ears, faint and colored with something Serena couldn’t put her finger on—regret? Fear? Or maybe both.
She swallowed, eyes darting to where her mother had stood seconds before, but nothing was there. Isolde was gone again, swallowed into the night with not a shred of evidence, the same as she’d done before.
Lucian’s hand brushed hers gently and pulled her back to reality. His touch anchored her, but it didn’t calm the storm inside her. There was one other thing she needed to know. Why had her mother left her behind? Why hadn’t she returned until now?
“Serena,” Lucian’s voice was low, laced with quiet concern, “Are you alright?” He stepped nearer, the softness in his features as he reached for her. But Serena stepped back, a frown crossing her eyes, stitched with confusion and resistance.
“I don’t know,” she replied, her voice faraway. “I don’t know what’s real anymore, Lucian.”
“You’re not going to be alone in this,” he said softly, squeezing her arm tighter. "You never have been."
She could sense the insincerity in his voice that part of her didn't want to believe.
Serena stepped back, taking in the shadows surrounding them, her Onyx wolf still faintly thrumming inside her. “My mother …” Her voice trailed off as she grappled to comprehend. “She didn’t just abandon me, did she? She was afraid. Afraid of what I’d become. Of what I might do."
Dorian and Lucian said nothing, but Lucian’s expression darkened, his jaw tightening as he nodded. "Yes. And not only because of what you might do with them. But because of what you might do to everyone. Serena, you were always destined to shift the balance. “This highly multiple awakening wasn’t just about your power — it was about what that power represented.”
Serena glared, eyes narrowing in confusion. "What do you mean?"
Lucian appeared to look into a distance, as if he was remembering something he hadn’t talked about in years. “The prophecy,” he said softly. “Your mother, the pack leaders, the rogues, they all knew it. Loosely knew that one day, someone would come into their lives who could rewrite the fate of all the clans. A more powerful Alpha than any to come before. And you … you are that Alpha.”
Serena gasped, her breath catching in her throat as the weight of the words hit her. She took a step back, her mind racing, struggling to grasp the reality of what was happening. “That’s not possible,” she whispered, her voice shaky with disbelief.
“I’m not meant to be this… I’m a curse, a destruction to everything around me. I’ve always been told I’m dangerous, that I bring chaos wherever I go. People should be afraid of me, not... not trying to claim me. I don’t understand. It doesn’t make sense." Her words faltered, the confusion and fear clouding her thoughts as she struggled to reconcile this new reality with the one she’d known her entire life.
Lucian’s gaze hardened. "Serena, they are scared of the difference you will make. You are standing on the edge of something huge, and your mother … she wasn’t trying to protect you out of love. She shielded you because she was afraid of what would happen if you ever realized your potential.”
His words hung heavy like a leaden weight in her heart. Fear. It had not been love that had kept Isolde away — it had been fear of her own daughter, fear of the power Serena might yield.
The realization hit her as a wave crashing on her back with a shiver running down her spine. Isolde never wanted to watch her daughter become the woman she was meant to be. That she had tried to protect her from the truth, and in so doing had kept Serena like a wean, like a bomb waiting for her fuse to be lit.
But Serena wasn’t just a tool to be used or a weapon to be wielded. She was much more than that—she was her own person, with her own strength, her own purpose, and the power to shape her own destiny.
She glanced at Lucian who was watching her with an intensity that felt like he could read the doubts and determination painted all over her face.
Lucian’s hand reached toward her, fitting against her face so gently, his skin hot and still. “Serena, we need to prepare for the war ahead, Elias and his army are marching this way."
Her heart raced in her chest as she understood the meaning of what he was saying. Serena understood it was time.
Serena closed her eyes for a moment, imagining all the potential futures that stretched before her. No more running, no more hiding.
“You can choose, Serena,” the voice of Lucian was calm, with an undercurrent of something unnameable, something not afraid.
" You will own your power, own your fate, and forge the future of this world. You can give it all up — your attachment to the Alphas, your affection for everyone else in your life — and turn your back on it all.”
Serena stared into his eyes, the fire within her raging bright. “I can’t turn away,” she said, her voice more forceful than before. "
Lucian’s gaze softened, and for a heartbeat, it was like the world stood still, like there was only them standing in the clearing, facing an uncertain future together.
But Serena also knew this was only the beginning.
She had the choice — and whichever path she chose, everything would change.
" We should get back to the pack." Lucian said with his eyes darting around the woods.
A sharp piercing scream escaped from Serena's lips before her body dropped to the ground.
Lucian's body was stiff and aching when he opened his eyes. The little light that filtered through the barred window above him did little but render the stone walls of the cell feel colder, more oppressive. His head was spinning, and the details of the past few moments rushed back in — specifically the moments before Dorian fell. He had rushed towards Dorian in an attempt to rescue him when they seized him. Dorian had been his best friend and the best beta any Alpha could ever hope for. He was so helpless, he didn’t remember when they had strapped him in chains. He fought to sit up but felt the cold stone wall behind him and then noticed his hands were chained to it. Panic began to set in as his heart was pounding. He was captured. Just the thought of it made him wince. How had he let it get this far? He just hoped they didn’t infiltrate the pack.A gentle shuffling of foots
Serena lay cold and shivering on the ground as her mind buzzed in a fog of confusion and fear. The terrible pain in her head, like reality was pulling her in two directions. Her scream was still echoing, just the sound of her breath, shallow and frantic, as she struggled to bring herself back to a place of control.Lucian knelt down next to her, hand over her shoulder without touching. Anxiety was painted on there, and something in his eyes — fear, maybe, or worry — was something Möbil couldn’t quite identify.“Serena,” he said, his voice cracking. “Stay with me.”She was rolling onto her back and then sitting up, the world whirling around her, her head as heavy as a block of iron. The clearing was still, eerily so, as if it had been frozen for centuries. Scattered around were the battered bodies of the rogue wolves. It was too much power inside of her, threatening t

Serena’s heart raced against her ribs, her breath frozen in her throat. It was so surreal that her mind struggled to comprehend what stood before her. she couldn’t look away from. Herself, facing her now —Isolde. She looke so different yet so familiar, Isolde’s hair was wild, unkempt black curls, her eyes shining with sin and defiance. But something was off. Her mother was no longer the person she once knew. She looked like she was under a spell or something. And the Isolde in front of her now felt like a stranger.“ Mum?” Serena’s voice cracked. She was baffled at what was happening. She found out that the same woman, who came to her side all those years later, and elusive told a few truths in her favour, was turned against her.Isolde looked at her, and then she smiled, just a little, which might have been wistful. “You’ve changed… you’re m
The air was cool, damp, like the familiar scent of pine and earth at night. The moon was low in the sky. Its gentle silver light spilled across the hillside clearing. The ceremony was complete. It was time for the pack members to return to their regular pattern of living. Serena stood behind Lucian, her hand still clutched firmly in his, and her heart pounding in her chest. What she saw in the ritual, she had never seen before. Then everything went much crazier, but somehow it was solid. It was that odd feeling she knew was still there in her head. The Onyx wolf which had once given her the impression of devouring and denying feeling was now, out of the blue, with her.“You alright? ” Lucian tilted back but there was an edge of concern in his voice that she could not brush off. Serena nodded although she still couldn’t quite dismiss that gnawing feeling deep in her gut.
The sun had only just begun to drop below the horizon, painting the clearing red. It was an ominous feeling, the gathering of the pack felt more like an impending storm than a celebration She was taking too long in the room as she wore a white gown, she was worried about what the elders would say. The sound of a knock on the door startled her out of her train of thought." Serena, it's time." Dorian went to the door and told her. She was going to be crowned the Luna of Night Fang pack. She was nervous, her mind racing a thousand thoughts a minute, pacing back and forth in her bedroom. Every thought collided with the one before it, the horrible ones blacker than the one before. The last time a ceremony was held for her, it had ended in disaster, the memories so fresh and painful in her mind. Everything had been broken in an instant: the aspirations, the anticipation, and what remained was nothing but complexity, sorrow, and a gr
