Hazel sat frozen on the floor where Damien had left her, her body trembling with disbelief. Her heart raced as his words echoed in her mind. She’s my mate.
It couldn’t be true. It shouldn’t be true. How could the Alpha—powerful, respected, and untouchable—be bound to her, the daughter of traitors, a lowly slave? She clenched her hands tightly, her nails digging into her palms as she tried to steady her breathing.
Her head dipped low, shame curling in her chest. “The Moon Goddess must be cruel,” she whispered to herself.
A shadow stood over her, and she looked up to see Selena, her smirk wicked.
“Well, well, it seems the traitor is causing quite a stir.” Selena grabbed a glass of wine from a passing maid and held it carefully before tilting it back and forth as if thinking of something.
“Maybe the Alpha was mistaken,” Hazel murmured, her voice sounding more like a whisper. “He’ll reject me.”
Selena barked out a laugh. “Oh, he will. But not before I remind you of your place.”
Without warning, Selena tilted the glass and poured its contents all over Hazel. The cold liquid soaked her hair and dress, drenching her in humiliation. Gasps sounded from the onlookers, who watched with sneers and amusement.
“You look better this way,” Selena sneered, tossing the empty glass aside. “A filthy omega covered in filth.”
Hazel bit her lip, tears stinging her eyes, but she refused to cry. She wouldn’t give them the satisfaction.
“What’s going on here?”
The deep, commanding voice cut through the air, freezing everyone in their tracks. Hazel’s head snapped up, and her breath was shaking. Damien stood in the doorway, his piercing eyes scanning the scene. Behind him were the high-ranking members of the pack.
Selena’s face paled. “Alpha Damien, I was just—”
“Humiliating my mate?” Damien’s voice was dangerously low, each word filled with fury.
Selena flinched, stepping back. “I didn’t mean—”
“Enough.” Damien’s sharp tone silenced her instantly. His gaze shifted to Hazel, who was still sitting on the floor, her soaked dress clinging to her skin. Something flickered in his eyes—anger, guilt, and something softer she couldn’t quite place.
“Stand up,” he ordered, his voice gentler now.
Hazel hesitated, her body frozen with fear. She expected him to humiliate her, to declare in front of everyone that she was unworthy. Slowly, she pushed herself to her feet, her legs unsteady beneath her.
Damien turned to Selena. “Who gave you the right to touch her?”
Selena’s mouth opened and closed like a fish gasping for air. “I… she’s an omega, Alpha. I was just reminding her of her place.”
“And her place is by my side,” Damien snapped, his words sending a ripple of shock through the room.
Whispers broke out among the pack members.
“He can’t mean it.”
“An omega as Luna? Unheard of.”
“What a disgrace to the pack.”
Selena’s face twisted in disbelief. “You can’t be serious! She’s a—”
“Enough!” Damien’s roar silenced the murmurs, his dominance rolling off him in waves. “I don’t care what she was. She is my mate, and no one will lay a hand on her again. Do I make myself clear?”
The room fell into an uneasy silence. Even the high-ranking members shifted uncomfortably under Damien’s glare.
Hazel stared at him, her mind reeling. Why was he defending her? Wasn’t he supposed to reject her? This wasn’t how things were supposed to go.
One of the elders stepped forward, his graying hair and stern expression giving him an air of authority. “Alpha, with all due respect, an omega as your mate will cause unrest within the pack. The bond may be real, but you can choose to reject it for the greater good.”
Damien’s jaw tightened. “I don’t recall asking for your opinion, Elder Marcus.”
“Alpha—”
“I said, enough!” Damien’s voice echoed through the hall, leaving no room for argument.
Selena, emboldened by the elder’s words, stepped forward again. “Damien, think about what you’re doing. The pack will never accept her. I was supposed to—”
“You were supposed to do what, Selena?” Damien interrupted, his tone cold. “Become my Luna because you think you’re entitled to it? The Moon Goddess made her my mate, not you.”
Selena’s face turned red with anger and humiliation, but she didn’t dare speak again.
Damien turned back to Hazel, his expression softening ever so slightly. “From this moment on, Hazel is under my protection. Anyone who disrespects her disrespects me.”
His declaration sent shockwaves through the room. The high-ranking members exchanged uneasy glances, and the pack members murmured among themselves.
“Alpha Damien,” Elder Marcus said cautiously, “this decision could divide the pack.”
Damien’s gaze hardened. “Let it.”
Hazel’s breath caught in her throat as she stared at him, disbelief and confusion in her mind. He didn’t want her—he couldn’t. This had to be some sort of twisted whatever.
Selena’s lips curled into a venomous smile. “Protect her all you want, Damien, but don’t think for a second that the rest of us will bow to an omega. The pack deserves a strong Luna, not… her.”
Damien’s eyes flicked to Selena, his voice dangerously low. “Try to undermine me again, Selena, and you’ll see just how ruthless I can be.”
Selena’s smirk faltered, and she stepped back, her fists clenched at her sides.
Hazel felt like she was drowning in the weight of the moment. Her mate—the Alpha—was defending her in front of everyone. But why? He didn’t even know her.
As Damien turned to address the high-ranking members, his conflicted feelings were clear in his eyes. Protecting her was instinctual, driven by the bond the Moon Goddess had created. But the political disagreement Will never .
“We’ll discuss this further in my office,” Damien said, his tone final. “Meeting adjourned.”
The pack began to disperse, their whispers filling the air like an unsettling buzz.
Damien stepped closer to Hazel, his towering presence making her feel small. “Follow me,” he said quietly.
Hazel hesitated, glancing at the others who were still watching her with disdain.
“Now,” Damien added, his voice leaving no room for argument.
Reluctantly, Hazel followed him, her heart pounding in her chest. She had no idea what awaited her.
Callan leaned forward. “You are a moldy sandwich. You rot everything you touch.”Lucien stood. “Alright. That’s it. Say that again.”Callan stood too. “You heard me.”Ronan stepped in between them. “No one is fighting today.”Lucien pointed at Callan. “One more insult and I swear I’ll turn him into a rug.”Hazel sighed and stood. “I’m going to the kitchen.”Both men turned to her at once.“I’ll come with you,” Callan offered quickly.“I’ll carry you there,” Lucien grinned.“No one’s going anywhere with me!” Hazel snapped. “You two stay right here. And if I hear even one growl—”“Can I whine?” Lucien asked, raising his hand.“No.”“Pout?”“No.”“Stare longingly at you?”Callan growled.Hazel pointed at both of them. “Sit. Stay. Like good boys.”Lucien gave a low whistle. “I’m getting mixed signals, and I like it.”“Shut up,” Hazel and Callan said at the same time. She stomped off into the kitchen. The moment she disappeared, Lucien flopped on the couch with a sigh.“She’s cute when she
Callan turned to her. “Hazel, I didn’t lie to you. I swear. Whatever Lucien did, it wasn’t my fault.”“I believe you,” she said quickly. “But I also… I need to know more.”Lucien stood up again. “Then let me stay. I’ll prove to you I’m not the villain here.”“You’re not staying in my house!” Callan growled.“Our house,” Lucien corrected.“You lost that right when you betrayed me!”“Oh please,” Lucien rolled his eyes. “Betrayal? Is that what this is about? Should we really talk about betrayal uh, you’ve always been so dramatic.”“Stop twisting everything!” Callan shouted. “You took something from me.”Hazel looked between the two of them. “What exactly happened between you two?”Lucien smirked. “Want to tell her, brother? Or should I?”Callan clenched his fists. “Don’t.”Hazel stepped between them. “Enough! Both of you. I can’t take this anymore.”She turned to Lucien. “You said the bond between me and Callan was weak. What did you mean?”Lucien shrugged. “Exactly what I said. I didn’t
Hazel found Lucien seated on the edge of his bed , his legs crossed and a glass cupped in his hand, filled with only the Goddess knew what.“I knew you'd be back soon,” Lucien said with a lazy chuckle, not even turning to look at her.“I don’t have time for your jokes,” Hazel snapped, stepping closer. “I need answers.”Lucien finally looked up, his silver eyes gleaming with something unreadable. “I don’t have the answers you want, Hazel. But I do think it’s time I paid my dear brother a visit.”“You’re going to harm him,” Hazel accused, her voice rising with alarm.“What? No,” he said, raising a brow. “Is that what he told you? That I’m dangerous?” He gave a soft laugh. “I’m not. If I truly were, I would’ve ripped him apart a long time ago.”“But you tampered with his memories,” Hazel shot back. “You weakened our bond!”“Yes,” Lucien said simply. “I did. I tampered with his memories because I needed time with you. I needed you to remember who you are—beyond the mate bond, beyond him.
Callan," she said softly , "I'm sorry. I didn't realize... I didn't know you were going through that too."Callan's expression softened, and he reached out to take her hand. "Hazel, I understand why you're angry. I understand why you don't trust me right now. But please, don't go back to Lucien. He's dangerous. He's not who you think he is. He's been lying to you, manipulating you. He wants to use you for his own purposes. He can't be trusted."Hazel felt a pang of uncertainty. Could callan be right? Was Lucien really manipulating her? She thought back to everything he had told her, everything he had shown her. It had all seemed so real, so true. But then again, lucien was a master of illusions. He had admitted that himself."What if he's right, callan?" Hazel asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "What if everything he's told me is true?"Callan's grip on her hand tightened. "Even if it is, hazel, it doesn't change the fact that he's dangerous. It doesn't change the fact that you
she couldn't go back to callan now , she was a danger to him, maybe just maybe with Lucien's help she will have her revenge against Damien and lady celeste for what they did to her, to her pack and to callan. She could even try and understand what is going on in her bond with callan, the bond was strong but something was pulling her back, the kiss with lucien just made things clear that it was broken, even the moon goddess said so. She took a shaky breath. What if she had more than one mate bond, the thought of having another mate scared her, the kiss felt like a bond, like a mate bond, She shook her head, trying to clear the thoughts. But it was no use. The questions kept swirling in her mind. What was she going to do now? The answer was clear. She needed to confront Callan. But she was afraid. Afraid of what he would say. Afraid of how he would react. And most of all, afraid of the truth. But she couldn’t keep running. She couldn’t keep hiding. It was time to face the truth, no
Callan stormed out of his room, fists clenched. His chest felt heavy, his mind spinning with frustration and confusion.Hazel. who was she, why couldn't he just stop thinking of her. in his nightmares she was after him to kill him, she had betrayed him.but still the name echoed in his head, a whisper from a past he couldn’t remember. He reached for the memory, but it slipped away, leaving behind a sharp ache in his chest. everytime he tries to think deeply, it felt like there was just this block, just something that kept blocking him. his wolf also felt frustrated already. He needed to hit something. anything to let out the frustration and anger, he felt. The training grounds were empty—just how he wanted them. Pulling off his shirt, he let the cold night air bite at his heated skin. Without a second thought, he attacked the wooden training dummies. One punch. Another. Harder. Faster. But no matter how hard he struck, the answer wouldn’t come. the barrier in his head wouldn't break.
