Danny's POV

I turned around slowly.

Chadwick stood three feet away, hands behind his back. His gaze flicked over my face, the scar at my hairline, my damp hair, and then, very briefly, to my mouth before returning to my eyes. A muscle in his jaw moved.

"No," I said. "I'm sleepwalking."

Silence.

Lyra tugged on my sleeve. "Daddy, you're talking."

"Sleep-talking."

The corner of Chadwick's mouth twitched. It was so small that I would have missed it if I hadn't been staring. Then it was gone, and hi

Danny's POVI turned around slowly.Chadwick stood three feet away, hands behind his back. His gaze flicked over my face, the scar at my hairline, my damp hair, and then, very briefly, to my mouth before returning to my eyes. A muscle in his jaw moved."No," I said. "I'm sleepwalking."Silence.Lyra tugged on my sleeve. "Daddy, you're talking.""Sleep-talking."The corner of Chadwick's mouth twitched. It was so small that I would have missed it if I hadn't been staring. Then it was gone, and his expression went smooth again."Good morning, Alpha Daddy!" Lyra chirped, waving with her whole arm. "Daddy's not scared of you. He's just being weird.""Lyra!"Chadwick's eyes softened as he looked at her, just for a moment. "Good morning, little one." Then he turned back to me, and the softness packed itself away. "Go have your meal. Then check on the field. Tony will go with you.""Yes, sir. Right away, sir." I saluted. I actually saluted. Then I grabbed Lyra's hand and speed-walked down the

Danny's POV"Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!"Something small and fast hit the bed like a cannonball, and I woke up with an elbow in my stomach."Oof. Lyra.""You're awake!" She sat on my chest, hair sticking out in four directions, and beamed at me like I'd won a prize. Behind her, a flustered nursery attendant hovered in the doorway, out of breath. "She was faster than I was," the woman wheezed. "I'm sorry, Danny.""It's fine," I said, hugging my daughter. She smelled like soap and sleep. "You can go."The attendant fled. Lyra put her hands on my cheeks and stared into my eyes with grave importance."Daddy. Did Alpha Daddy really spend the night here?"My stomach dropped straight through the mattress. The night came back in pieces. The lock clicking. His hand on my hip. That awful, humiliating sound I had made, and the way he had said he hated my voice. My face went hot and then cold, and then irritation swallowed everything, because the idiot had apparently told the whole Citadel."No," I sai

Danny's POVLyra and Noah were no longer with me.Katherine had swept in an hour ago with two nurses, saying a heat room was no place for children. I had been too weak to fight her. Lyra cried and clung to my sleeve until a nurse peeled her fingers off one by one. Noah didn't cry. He walked out with his shoulders stiff, and at the door he looked back at me, just once.I stared at the ceiling and hated myself for letting them go.This stupid heat.My skin was on fire. The sheets felt like sandpaper. Every breath tasted sweet and wrong, and a low ache had settled deep in my belly that I refused to name. Dr. Greene had promised me a suppressant within the hour. It had been two. Then the door creaked open, and that scent hit me.Cedar. Gun oil. Smoke.Aloha, Chad.I rolled my eyes, because it was the only thing I still had the strength to do.He stepped inside and shut the door behind him. The lock clicked. The air changed at once, heavy and warm, like standing too close to a fire. His ph

Chadwicks POV"Your heat," Greene said gently. "Our suppressants ran out weeks ago, I have one dose left in my room, and it won't hold under this much strain." He turned to me. "Alpha, how do you usually handle his heat?"I kept my voice low and even. "I know how."Greene waited."I don't care," I said.It wasn't true. But for five years it had been the only sentence that let me sleep.I looked at Danny, expecting the sneer, the sharp tongue, something thrown at my head. Instead, he had gone from gray to bright red and was staring at the quilt with pure horror."I am fine with that," he told the blanket. "Totally fine. Don't worry about me. I'll just be extremely handle-able."Noah made a small noise that might have been a laugh.I turned away."Chadwick? Darling?"Katherine stood in the doorway in a cream dress, carrying a small tray with a steaming cup. Her eyes flicked once to Danny, once to Lyra, then away."I heard," she said, her voice full of concern. "Poor thing. I had the kit

Chadwick's POV The report on my desk said the same thing for the third time. I set it down and pressed two fingers to the bridge of my nose. My coat hung over the back of my chair, and it still smelled like Danny. Rain, turned soil, and something sweeter underneath. I had carried that scent all the way back from the fields. For one stupid second, I had wanted to put my face in his hair. Why would I want to do that? that ungrateful bastard tried to kill me after all I had done for him. When I met Danny years ago, he was just an orphan guy I had saved from a lawless countryside. Against my entire pack, we fell in love and I marked him as my Luna. Just for him to turn his back on me as soon as the infection started. As soon as I wasn't rich and powerful enough for his taste. He didn't even care about our children. He just wanted me dead, and sell our kids to Derek. Deep down I knew the truth. He wanted Derek. He wanted to marry Derek, because his fortress was far thrice bigger than

Danny's POV "You look terrible," Erica said, passing me a canteen. Her voice was light, but her eyes lingered on my hands, on the dirt packed under my nails, on the way I knelt like I'd done this a thousand times. "Seriously, Danny. Where did you learn all this?" "Books," I said. "The old Danny couldn't read a menu." "I've been studying." "Uh-huh." A shriek tore across the field. Everyone froze. The canteen stopped halfway to my mouth. It came from the barrier line, a long, wet, inhuman screech that I had last heard in the dark at Derek's outpost. The hair on my arms stood straight up. "Mutants!" a soldier bellowed. "The barrier!" another voice yelled. "It's breached! North fence!" I spun around. A section of chain-link had buckled inward, peeled back like the lid of a can. Shapes poured through the gap, hunched and gray, with swollen limbs and jaws that hung too wide. At least a dozen of them. Their eyes glowed a dull, feverish yellow, and the wind carried their stink acro
