Chapter 7: Into the Blizzard

The howling wind swept over the snow-crusted battlements of the Obsidian Fortress, carrying needle-sharp ice across the high mountain pass. Midnight had long passed, burying the narrow rocky trail beneath fresh, blinding drifts of white snow.

Elodie pulled the thick fur lining of her heavy riding cloak tighter around her throat, her gloved hands gripping the leather reins of her black warhorse with firm determination. High above, the crescent moon flickered behind heavy storm clouds, casting long, jagged shadows across the treacherous icy precipice.

Beside her rode Grim, mounted on a towering black stallion that cut through the deep snow without hesitation. His dark wool coat was dusted with white frost, his dark hair whipping back in the fierce mountain gale. Even amidst the roaring blizzard, his posture remained commanding, his ice-blue eyes scanning the dark treeline below with relentless vigilance.

"The temperature will plummet further once we enter the Devil's Tooth Pass," Grim called out over the roar of the wind. His voice was deep and steady, cutting through the storm like a physical anchor. "Hold tight to the reins, Elodie. A single misstep on these frozen ledges will send horse and rider plunging two thousand feet into the rocky ravine below."

"I am fine," Elodie shouted back, her breath swirling into thick white steam before her eyes. "My boots are lined with thermal wool, and my horse knows the trail. Save your strength for when we reach the valley floor."

Grim navigated his stallion closer until their heavy iron stirrups brushed together in the darkness. He reached out with his gloved hand, steadying her horse's bridle as they navigated a narrow ridge where the cliff face dropped into sheer, bottomless emptiness.

"You do not need to act invincible around me, Duchess," Grim murmured, his icy eyes locking onto hers with intense warmth despite the freezing air. "I know capital noblewomen are not accustomed to riding through northern blizzards at midnight."

"I am not a typical capital noblewoman," Elodie reminded him, a subtle smile touching her lips. "And I am not doing this out of stubborn pride. The Starlight Lily blooms for only three nights during the winter solstice. If Saintess Ariel's men burn the valley before we arrive, your curse becomes permanent."

Grim stared at her for a long moment. The dark, branching veins along his jawline flickered faintly beneath his collar, but his cold expression softened with profound, unspoken emotion.

"You ride straight into danger for a cure," Grim said softly, his grip on her bridle firm and protective. "When most capital nobles would have fled the North at the first sign of blood."

"I do not flee from what is mine," Elodie replied cleanly, meeting his gaze without a single trace of fear.

They pushed deeper into the mountain pass, the steep stone walls narrowing until only a single horse could traverse the path at a time. The snow fell harder now, heavy flakes sticking to Elodie's eyelashes and obscuring the dark pine trees stretching across the gorge below.

After two grueling hours of steady ascent through the howling blizzard, Grim held up his hand, signaling an immediate halt.

Elodie reined in her mount beside him. Ahead, nestled securely between two towering granite peaks, lay the Frost Lily Valley. A faint silver glow emanated from the basin below, where hundreds of star-shaped white flowers bloomed amidst the deep snow, radiating a soft, otherworldly luminescence that lit up the dark night sky.

"We made it," Elodie whispered, a quiet sense of relief washing over her stiff, frozen shoulders.

"Not yet," Grim corrected grimly, his bare hand dropping instantly to the heavy hilt of his dark steel sword.

Elodie followed his gaze down into the glowing basin. Near the southern edge of the valley, a thick trail of acrid black smoke rose into the midnight sky. Torchlight flickered against the snow as a dozen armed men clad in dark grey cloaks systematically moved through the clearing, pouring flammable pitch over the glowing flowers.

"Ariel's mercenaries," Elodie said, her dark eyes flashing with dangerous heat. "They have already ignited the eastern patch."

"Waylon and the vanguard are still an hour behind us," Grim noted, his aura flaring around his broad shoulders like a dark, invisible cloak. The snow around his boots melted instantly, turning to steam upon touching his fierce magic. "We cannot wait for reinforcements. If those flowers burn, the cure perishes entirely."

"Then we strike now," Elodie declared, reaching into her riding cloak to draw a sleek bronze hand-crossbow she had retrieved from the fortress armory. She loaded a heavy steel bolt with practiced speed.

Grim looked at her, a low, approving rumble vibrating in his chest. "You know how to use that weapon?"

"I studied the mechanics," Elodie answered, aiming the crossbow toward the lead mercenary holding a flaming torch. "Now draw your sword, Husband. Let us show Saintess Ariel how the North handles trespassers who dare enter our domain."

Grim drew his dark blade with a ringing metallic rasp that echoed off the stone cliffs. "Follow my lead, my clever Duchess. Together, we purge these intruding mercenaries once and for all tonight."

With a fierce, echoing roar of hooves, they charged down the snowy slope into the burning valley to shatter the enemy lines.

The capital villa of House Cavendish stood tucked away in the northern quarter, built from white marble and ironwood. Inside the master suite, soft lamplight flickered against silk draperies. Elodie stood before an oval mirror, smoothing the waist of a gown crafted from dark navy velvet and mithril thread. The fabric shimmered like stars, its collar lined with silver scales functioning as armor. Grim stood behind her, adjusting the silver clasp of his cloak. In the mirror's reflection, his ice-blue eyes met hers with unshielded intensity. His tall frame dwarfed hers, yet his posture held a quiet reverence that made her heart flutter. "You look like an empress preparing for war," Grim murmured, his voice a low rumble through the room. "I am a duchess preparing to dismantle a prince," Elodie corrected with a small smile, turning to face him. "How do I look?" Grim stepped closer until his boots brushed her silver hem. He reached out with calloused fingers, adjusting a stray pin

The dark stone walls of the Youngblood family mansion loomed ahead, surrounded by manicured hedge gardens and gilded iron gates. As the ducal carriage pulled into the cobblestone courtyard, servants clad in green liveries rushed forward, bowing nervously. Standing at the top of the marble staircase were Count Thomas Youngblood and Countess Marianne, Elodie's father and stepmother. Beside them stood her half-sister, Chloe, wearing a dress of pink silk. When the carriage door swung open, Count Thomas stepped forward with a wide, artificial smile."Elodie, my dear daughter!" Thomas called out with false warmth. "We heard rumors that you survived the northern winter. Come inside! Your family has missed you dearly."Elodie stepped onto the marble pavement, her midnight-blue velvet cloak rustling around her ankles. She did not return her father's smile. Her dark eyes remained unreadable as she looked up at the people who had treated her as a disposable tool for twenty years.Grim dismounted

The carriage rolled smoothly across the frozen highway, its silver dragon crest gleaming under the sun.Inside the cabin, a stone brazier filled with charcoal kept the winter chill at bay. Elodie sat on the bench, spreading parchment ledgers across a table. Her dark velvet cloak rested over her shoulders, its silver embroidery catching the firelight.Across from her sat Grim. Wearing a black silk shirt and trousers, his imposing frame filled the cabin. His ice-blue eyes tracked her fingers as she organized documents detailing Crown Prince Jamie's secret debts."You have been scanning those numbers since we crossed the border three hours ago, Elodie," Grim said softly, his voice vibrating through the space."These numbers are our sharpest weapons, Husband," Elodie replied, her quill dipping into ink. "Prince Jamie borrowed two million gold sovereigns from underground syndicates to fund his private knights. When I present these notes to the Imperial Senate at the Winter Gala, his standi

Behind them, Commander Waylon and fifty northern knights escorted the bound mercenaries in heavy chains, their armor gleaming in the morning light.A large crowd of northern soldiers, servants, and councilors had gathered in the central courtyard, their faces anxious. The dark purple mist coiled in the freezing air like a serpent, emitting a high-pitched humming sound. From the glowing center of the magic circle, a translucent silhouette materialized. It was Sir Cedric, Saintess Ariel's chief knight commander, his face contorted in an arrogant sneer."Grand Duke Cavendish," Cedric's projected voice echoed across the basin, metallic and distorted. "If you hear this message, my mercenaries failed. But Saintess Ariel foresaw your arrival. The mercenary carrying this mark was injected with a blood corruption curse."Before Grim could react, the dark mist surged forward, diving straight toward the Starlight Lilies in Elodie's hands."Elodie, drop them!" Grim shouted.Instead of dropping the flowers, Elodie pulled the lilies against her chest and rolled across the hard snow.
