Rose stirred awake, feeling like a train had run her over, aching all over, in places she hadn’t even known could hurt so much. She couldn’t bring herself to recall what had happened, but even before she opened her eyes, she knew she wasn’t quite in an unfamiliar place. Indeed, she was no stranger to the beeping monitoring machines. She was also far too accustomed to the sterile smell of disinfectant that hung in the air. The clinic? She thought to herself numbly, opening an eye at long last. I didn’t even go back to work though. She half-expected to be handed a chart, to be given instructions, and prayed to the moon and back that her shift would be a calm one. But then, truth hit her like lightning, and she realized a split-second later, that she was there as a patient, not as a nurse. She wasn’t there to help anyone. She was the one in need of healing.Rose gulped down noisily and apprehension kicked in, and her heart monitor picked its pace. “How do you feel, little butterfly
Roman received a call from Flora for the first time in a very long time. He was in an important meeting, of which she was more or less aware. He knew she wouldn’t call him unless it was urgent – she knew better than to call for something trivial. He had yet to hear what she had to say. And yet, he was already frowning ever so slightly. He was Roman Bianchi, and he didn’t know fear, but something about this call upset him in more ways than one. “Speak,” he ordered. “It’s Rose,” she let out in a panicked tone of voice, which was so unlike her, he feared for the worst. “She passed out, and won’t wake up. I don’t know what to do.” “On my way,” he told her briskly, rising to his feet without delay. A curt nod at Stefan, and the latter was soon telling them, in a not so courteous tone of voice, “Meeting adjourned, gentlemen. Let’s meet again in a few days.” “What could be so important…?” One of them dared to sneer, his displeasure obvious for all to see – and to hear. Roman wasn’t l
“You have to understand, Rose,” Roman began in his usual cold, albeit mesmerizing voice, and she leaned into his side a little more, almost against her better judgment. She was supposed to be angry at him And yet, he made it so easy to just give in. “I am not a good man, and that is not going to change. But implicating you isn’t something I can do.”“I’m in too deep anyway,” she whispered, wishing he would understand where she was coming from.“You were not born into this,” he heaved a sigh, carrying on, as if she hadn’t interrupted him. “You wouldn’t get some of the things we do…”“Make me understand,” she pleaded with him, her eyes stinging with unshed tears, her hands basically twitching with the desire to grab his hand, and just beg him.“Let it go, Rose,” he drawled. “Don’t be difficult about this.”She scoffed, her pain so vivid, it was visceral.“How about you let me go then?” She countered after a beat, her eyes downcast, spilling tears, but her posture stiff. What was she eve
Rose made it to the bedroom in a little bit of a daze, her mind far in the clouds, deep in thought about the underworld she had stepped into over 2 months ago, without fully understanding the stakes. Roman went to his office, claiming he had some matters to take care of, and she couldn’t help but wonder if he just didn’t want to be with her. Getting in the shower felt like a blissful time, despite the memories of the day’s events. Everything kept replaying in a loop, and a headache was on its way to make the day even better. She could understand that her questions and accusations might bother Roman… She was sure he was not used to people using such a tone with him. And yet, she was dealing with a lot. Could anyone blame her? Hell, couldn’t he be more understanding, and help her with her doubts? Before long, she changed into the only demure, and somewhat not too outrageous, pajamas she had in the closet, laid on the bed, and just continued to overthink – and cry too. Almost too soo
The wing where Enzo’s room was located was currently empty. As to be expected from VIP treatment. There were two men whom Rose assumed would be playing bodyguards at the door of his room. They nodded respectfully at the sight of Roman, their wordless action speaking louder than any words could. The machines beeping loudly, monitoring Enzo's well-being, were an ugly reminder of the worst that could have happened.Enzo was in the bed, looking slightly pale, tired too, while Ludo sat on a chair in one of the room’s corners. If Rose had to make a guess, she would say Ludo was brooding. At the sight of Rose and his boss, Enzo’s expression instantly became more joyful. “What’s got you so worried, folks?” Enzo let out in a teasing tone of voice, despite the slightly pained expression. “This is nothing…” Rose couldn’t believe the words spilling out of his mouth, and merely shook her head in disbelief, a faint smile stretching her lips. “You’re hurt,” she told him softly, her eyes narr
The words felt wrong on Rose’s tongue, and yet they lingered in the air, sharp enough to make Ludo take an uncertain step back, eyes narrowed slightly in confusion. The man didn’t utter a word, not to tell her she was insane, and not to question her either. Instead, he looked at Rose’s mom, the weight of his gaze making the latter uncomfortable. Rose wished the ground would open up and swallow her whole. This wasn’t a situation she wished on her enemy, if she ever had one. The awkwardness that choked her, the shame gnawing at her insides, and the longing – that damned longing – she could never really let go of… everything made the situation confusing and downright infuriating. Rose didn’t get to breathe a word before her mom let out, “You look different.” The words were slightly slurred, and only made the many years the woman failed to show up that much more painful. “I bet,” she couldn’t help the scoff that escaped her. “I was a teen when you left.” “And you’re a woman now,” h
