FAZER LOGINAyla sat on her bed, still turning everything over in her head. Nobody has ever looked at you with admiration before. She lowered her head, wondering if she had imagined the warmth in Julian's eyes.
"What if that look meant nothing?" she whispered to the empty room. "Alphas touch people all the time. Maybe we're just desperate for someone to look at us without disgust."
She stood and moved toward the window, staring into the darkness outside. "If Liam comes and apologizes, I'll stay. If he doesn't, I'll go find out what Julian's offer means." She took a slow breath. "I'll give him six hours."
She sat by the door through the first hour, jumping every time the floor creaked outside. By the second hour, she had rehearsed his apology in her head so many times she could hear his voice saying it, could see the exact way he'd duck his head when he admitted he was wrong.
By the fourth hour, her back ached from sitting so straight, listening for footsteps that never came. What if he never came because he had meant every word he said? What if the whiskey hadn't made him cruel, only honest?
Ayla stared at the closed door until her eyes burned, then finally looked away. The circumstances had already made the choice for her.
She left her chambers and crossed the pack grounds, keeping to the darker paths. His quarters stood near the edge of the grounds, firelight flickering warm against the windows. The candles were still lit. He hadn't gone to sleep.
Ayla knocked once and was about to knock again when the door opened immediately, as if he'd been standing right on the other side. Julian's eyes settled on her face, and something in his expression eased.
"You came," Julian said.
"Yes." Her voice caught on the single word.
Julian stepped aside to let her in. The warmth of the room wrapped around her, candles burning low, a fire crackling in the hearth. Ayla crossed her arms tight over her chest and kept her eyes on the floor, unable to make herself look at him directly.
"You don't have to hide from me," he said.
"I'm not hiding." She pulled her arms tighter anyway.
When Julian took a step closer, she stepped back and hit the edge of a table with her hip. Her breath caught, and she pressed a hand flat against the wood to steady herself.
"Julian, wait." She held her other hand out between them. "I don't think I should be here."
"Why not?" he asked, stopping at once.
"Because I don't know you. And because I still have a mate."
"Had," Julian corrected gently. He stepped closer but kept his hands at his sides, leaving room for her to move past him if she wanted. "He said the words himself in front of everyone. The bond was severed."
Ayla opened her mouth to argue and found nothing there. She turned toward the door, and that was when the pull came back, the same one from when their hands first touched. Her wolf pressed against her skin, restless in a way she hadn't felt in years.
She shut her eyes and pressed a hand flat against her sternum, trying to hold herself still.
"You're feeling it too," Julian said quietly.
She opened her eyes and looked at him. "I don't understand what this is."
"Neither do I completely. But I know what I felt when I touched you. And I know my wolf recognized yours."
Her hands were shaking. Twenty-three years bonded to Liam, and she had barely survived losing that. She didn't know if she could survive trusting another bond, not yet, maybe not ever.
"I can't," she whispered.
"Can't, or don't want to?"
She didn't answer. She only knew that every part of her wanted to understand the pull between them, even while another part of her was already bracing for it to hurt.
Julian raised his hand slowly and waited until she gave the smallest nod before reaching toward her. He tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, his fingers brushing her cheek. Her pulse jumped, but she didn't step back this time.
"I meant what I said earlier," Julian told her. "About your worth. About the way I see you." His voice stayed even. "I don't say things I don't mean."
Her chest went tight, then loosened all at once. She blinked hard, fighting the sting building behind her eyes, and pressed her lips together until it passed.
"Alpha—"
"You don't have to decide everything tonight." He lowered his hand and stepped back, giving her the room again. "I won't force you into anything."
Ayla stared at him. Liam had spent years making her feel like her choices didn't matter, and here was a stranger handing her the choice back like it had always been hers.
She took a shaky breath and closed the distance instead, her fingers curling into the front of his shirt.
"I'm scared," she admitted.
"I know," he whispered.
She kissed him before she could talk herself out of it. The pull between them flared the second their lips met, warmth spreading through her chest and down into her hands. For the first time that night, her mind went quiet.
Julian kissed her back slowly, giving her every chance to pull away. When she didn't, he wrapped his arms around her and held her close. She flattened her hands against his chest and felt his heartbeat under her palms, steady where hers was racing.
"Tell me to stop, and I will," Julian whispered against her lips.
She shook her head and kissed him again. She wasn't reaching for him to replace Liam. She was reaching for the first thing in years that had made her feel wanted instead of endured.
Julian's mouth moved to her neck, and when his lips touched her skin, her wolf surged forward to meet his scent. The bond pulled tight as he marked her.
She gasped and gripped his shoulders, nails digging into fabric, and for the first time in years, something in her chest that had been clenched for so long finally let go.
She pressed her face into his chest as he held her. They had moved fast, she knew that. But something about it felt real in a way nothing with Liam ever had. For the first time since the rejection, she let herself believe the Moon Goddess might have given her a second chance.
She wouldn't waste it. If the people who had laughed at her wanted to watch her fall, she'd give them a reason to regret it.
Later, they lay side by side, staring at the ceiling. Ayla braced for guilt to hit her and it never came. Just a strange, steady calm. Julian turned his head to study her.
"Come with me. Be my Luna." He traced slow patterns along her arm. "Leave this pack behind and come somewhere you'll be appreciated."
"You barely know me."
"I know you're my mate," Julian said. "I know what I felt when I touched your hand. And I know I'm not letting you walk away without giving us a chance."
She thought of the six hours she'd spent waiting by that door. She thought of crawling down the altar steps while the whole pack watched and nobody moved to help her.
None of it made staying feel like the right choice anymore.
"Okay," she said softly. "I'll come with you."
Julian's expression eased, though he didn't look surprised. "Meet me at the eastern border at dawn. My men leave early. Don't bring more than you need."
"What if someone sees me?"
"Then they see you. You don't owe this pack anything anymore."
She looked down at her hands. "It's just so quick. We met tonight, and now you want me to leave everything and become your Luna."
"Then don't decide everything tonight." A small smile. "Take the time you need."
He found her hand and squeezed it once. "Just know I won't let my mate go easily. Not now that she's finally mine."
Ayla looked at him and, for the first time, didn't feel like anyone's unwanted second choice. Tonight had cost her everything she thought she wanted. By dawn, she'd walk away from it and never look back.
Ayla ran until her lungs burned, her legs carrying her toward the only place she believed she could be safe. Behind her, she could still hear Liam crashing through the underbrush, refusing to give up the chase. She could see the border ahead. Beyond it, a cluster of wagons stood loaded and ready, men moving between them. Julian stood near the front, giving instructions to one of his guards. The moment he caught sight of her running toward him, his attention snapped in her direction. He went still, the way a wolf goes still right before it strikes. Ayla didn't slow down. Her chest heaved and her arm throbbed where Liam's fingers had dug into her skin earlier.Julian's eyes moved past her, scanning the trees. His jaw tightened. "Someone's behind you."He pulled her behind him before she could turn around, putting his body between her and whatever was coming. Ayla fisted her hand in the back of his shirt and held on.A low growl built in his chest. His shoulders squared, and the calm Alp
Ayla left Julian's quarters just before dawn, the pack grounds quiet except for her own footsteps. Julian's words kept circling in her head. Take your time, but know that I won't let my mate go.Her plan was simple. Get to her room, grab what she could carry, make it to the eastern border before anyone noticed. She didn't want to give herself enough time to change her mind. She turned the last corner toward her chambers and slowed. Liam stood in the doorway, blocking it completely, his face twisted with anger."So the rumors were true," he said before she could speak. "The servants are already whispering that you were seen going into that Alpha's quarters last night."Ayla stopped a few steps away. "Word travels fast.""Is that all you have to say?" His voice rose. "Soon the whole pack will know the Alpha Prince's former mate was in another Alpha's quarters the same night she was rejected.""We're no longer together, Liam." She folded her arms. "Or did you forget you rejected me in fr

Julian walked inside with his guards behind him, barely sparing anyone in the crowd a glance. Around him, people were still trying to compose themselves after the chaos of the ceremony. An elder near the edge cleared his throat and straightened his robes, his expression suddenly serious.Julian's eyes moved past all of them until they landed on Ayla, who was still standing at the center of the hall with one hand pressed against her chest. He stopped walking, and his guards immediately stopped behind him. For several seconds, he simply stared at her.Liam stepped forward first with open arms, as though he were greeting an old friend. "Alpha Julian, welcome to our territory. I hope your trip wasn't too long."Julian didn't answer him or even look in his direction. As Liam walked toward Julian, he brushed past Ayla without a second glance. The force of his shoulder sent her stumbling to the ground. He didn't even look back to check if she was hurt, already reaching to straighten his cuff
Ayla stood in the crowd with her arms crossed tightly over her chest. People around her whispered and laughed, their eyes lingering on her body. She kept her eyes fixed on the altar, pretending she couldn't hear them. She had heard the same cruel jokes for years, but that didn't make them hurt any less. The hall was filled with members from different packs. Everyone had gathered for the annual pack ceremony.Someone close by leaned to their friend and said, "I heard she even tried drinking a whole jar of slimming potion."They both laughed. “Her fatness is a curse.” The other friend responded, as they laughed more.Ayla didn't turn around. She just kept watching the front, even though every part of her wanted to leave. Her sister Victoria stood on the altar in a white dress, her fingers intertwined with those of Alpha Prince Liam, Ayla's mate.Ayla's chest tightened at the sight. That used to be her spot, but her slim and beautiful sister always found a way to take what belonged to he
