FAZER LOGINJulian walked inside with his guards behind him, barely sparing anyone in the crowd a glance. Around him, people were still trying to compose themselves after the chaos of the ceremony. An elder near the edge cleared his throat and straightened his robes, his expression suddenly serious.
Julian's eyes moved past all of them until they landed on Ayla, who was still standing at the center of the hall with one hand pressed against her chest. He stopped walking, and his guards immediately stopped behind him. For several seconds, he simply stared at her.
Liam stepped forward first with open arms, as though he were greeting an old friend. "Alpha Julian, welcome to our territory. I hope your trip wasn't too long."
Julian didn't answer him or even look in his direction.
As Liam walked toward Julian, he brushed past Ayla without a second glance. The force of his shoulder sent her stumbling to the ground. He didn't even look back to check if she was hurt, already reaching to straighten his cuffs like nothing had happened.
"Oops, you were in the way," he said, not bothering to lower his voice. "You really should learn when to move."
Liam stopped in front of Julian and smiled. "Sorry about that," he said, gesturing toward Ayla. "She always causes trouble wherever she goes."
Julian ignored him completely and walked straight past his open arms.
Instead, he crouched down in front of Ayla and held out his hand without saying a word. Ayla looked up at him, startled, while she struggled to catch her breath. She didn't know this man, but her body ached too much to argue, so she placed her hand in his.
The moment their skin touched, something like a spark shot between them and ran straight up her arm into her chest. Ayla gasped. It wasn't pain. It felt like something inside her had been asleep for years and had just opened its eyes.
Julian felt it too. His eyes widened for half a second before he composed himself again. He pulled Ayla to her feet and kept his hand around hers a moment longer than he needed to.
For the first time since she had entered that hall, someone was looking at her as though she actually mattered.
"What's your name?" he asked.
"Ayla," she replied, her voice still shaky.
Julian repeated her name quietly, as though he wanted to remember the sound of it. "You have a beautiful figure," he said. "Don't let anyone make you believe otherwise."
Ayla didn't know what to say to that. Nobody had ever spoken to her that way. She searched his face for a joke, some hidden sign that he was mocking her the way everyone else did. She found nothing but genuine admiration.
Behind them, whispers started again, quieter this time. Julian leaned closer and lowered his voice so only she could hear.
"I've heard things about you and this place," he said. "How they treat you, even your own family and your mate."
"I have an offer for you," he continued. "Something that might give you the chance to start over somewhere you'll actually be valued."
"Come to my quarters tonight," he said. "If you truly want to leave this pack behind, we'll talk about it."
He didn't wait for her answer. He straightened and turned to Liam, his expression hardening at once. "We have territory matters to settle. Since your ceremony is over, let's go inside and talk." His tone made it clear he wasn't asking.
Liam blinked, caught off guard by the sudden shift. "Of course," he said quickly. "Right this way." He turned and led the way toward the inner chambers, his shoulders a little too stiff for someone who claimed to be in charge here.
At the doorway, he threw one last glance back at Ayla. Then he disappeared inside with his father, Julian, and their Betas.
Ayla stayed where she was, her hand still warm from Julian's touch. She rubbed her palm with her other hand, trying to understand what had just happened to her body.
She had felt something like it only once before, the day she turned eighteen and the bond with Liam first woke up. That spark had faded into something dull and disappointing within a year. This one hadn't faded at all. If anything, it had grown stronger the longer she stood there.
That scared her more than anything Liam had said tonight.
A small, stubborn part of her wanted to believe he'd take the rejection back once the whiskey wore off. She had seen him drunk before. He said cruel things he later claimed he never meant.
But the whole pack had heard him say it. Had felt the bond snap when he did. Words like that didn't get taken back just because he was sober enough to regret them in the morning.
She looked down at her hand one more time. The warmth still hadn't faded.
Whatever it meant, she couldn't ignore it.
Around her, the pack slowly filed out toward their homes, their voices low with whispers about what they'd just watched. Victoria and Ayla's father stood off in the elders' section, talking quietly, throwing glances her way now and then.
Ayla wrapped her arms around herself and turned toward the doors she'd been trying to reach before everything fell apart. This time she had the strength to walk out on her own.
She followed the crowd outside and headed for her chambers, one question sitting heavier than anything else.
Stay here and keep being treated like nothing. Or find out what Julian's offer really meant.
She stopped outside her door and whispered it to herself. "Staying or leaving. Which one is better?”
Ayla ran until her lungs burned, her legs carrying her toward the only place she believed she could be safe. Behind her, she could still hear Liam crashing through the underbrush, refusing to give up the chase. She could see the border ahead. Beyond it, a cluster of wagons stood loaded and ready, men moving between them. Julian stood near the front, giving instructions to one of his guards. The moment he caught sight of her running toward him, his attention snapped in her direction. He went still, the way a wolf goes still right before it strikes. Ayla didn't slow down. Her chest heaved and her arm throbbed where Liam's fingers had dug into her skin earlier.Julian's eyes moved past her, scanning the trees. His jaw tightened. "Someone's behind you."He pulled her behind him before she could turn around, putting his body between her and whatever was coming. Ayla fisted her hand in the back of his shirt and held on.A low growl built in his chest. His shoulders squared, and the calm Alp
Ayla left Julian's quarters just before dawn, the pack grounds quiet except for her own footsteps. Julian's words kept circling in her head. Take your time, but know that I won't let my mate go.Her plan was simple. Get to her room, grab what she could carry, make it to the eastern border before anyone noticed. She didn't want to give herself enough time to change her mind. She turned the last corner toward her chambers and slowed. Liam stood in the doorway, blocking it completely, his face twisted with anger."So the rumors were true," he said before she could speak. "The servants are already whispering that you were seen going into that Alpha's quarters last night."Ayla stopped a few steps away. "Word travels fast.""Is that all you have to say?" His voice rose. "Soon the whole pack will know the Alpha Prince's former mate was in another Alpha's quarters the same night she was rejected.""We're no longer together, Liam." She folded her arms. "Or did you forget you rejected me in fr
Ayla sat on her bed, still turning everything over in her head. Nobody has ever looked at you with admiration before. She lowered her head, wondering if she had imagined the warmth in Julian's eyes."What if that look meant nothing?" she whispered to the empty room. "Alphas touch people all the time. Maybe we're just desperate for someone to look at us without disgust."She stood and moved toward the window, staring into the darkness outside. "If Liam comes and apologizes, I'll stay. If he doesn't, I'll go find out what Julian's offer means." She took a slow breath. "I'll give him six hours."She sat by the door through the first hour, jumping every time the floor creaked outside. By the second hour, she had rehearsed his apology in her head so many times she could hear his voice saying it, could see the exact way he'd duck his head when he admitted he was wrong.By the fourth hour, her back ached from sitting so straight, listening for footsteps that never came. What if he never came

Ayla stood in the crowd with her arms crossed tightly over her chest. People around her whispered and laughed, their eyes lingering on her body. She kept her eyes fixed on the altar, pretending she couldn't hear them. She had heard the same cruel jokes for years, but that didn't make them hurt any less. The hall was filled with members from different packs. Everyone had gathered for the annual pack ceremony.Someone close by leaned to their friend and said, "I heard she even tried drinking a whole jar of slimming potion."They both laughed. “Her fatness is a curse.” The other friend responded, as they laughed more.Ayla didn't turn around.
