Chapter 1

Five years after leaving, I set foot in Blackridge Pack territory again for the Multi-Pack Council banquet.

"Sera!" Morgan's voice rang out behind me, dripping with that familiar warmth. "Long time no see! Word was you used to have a thing for Callum back in the day. Still carrying that torch?"

I turned around and looked at this old friend of mine. His face was lit up with gossip-fueled excitement, completely oblivious to how ironic that question was.

"That was a long time ago," I said flatly.

"I heard Callum's really made a name for himself," Morgan lowered his voice, eyes gleaming with envy. "Blackridge Pack has grown incredibly powerful in just a few years. You sure knew how to pick 'em back then. Too bad…"

He didn't finish, but I knew exactly what that "too bad" meant. Too bad I never became that Alpha's Luna. Too bad I wasted all those years for nothing.

I was about to brush him off when Callum showed up.

He crossed half the hall to reach me, bypassing every Alpha who tried to make conversation, and sat down right beside me.

"Sera."

"Long time no see. So… how's life been out there on your own these past five years?"

I kept my head down, cutting the cold, rare steak on my plate. I'd been feeling weak lately—always drowsy, my stomach hollow like it had been scooped out.

"Life's been great without you, actually."

His grip tightened around his wine glass, but he quickly slipped back into that composed expression.

"We need to talk after this. In private," he said. It wasn't a request. It was a statement.

"No thanks."

His gaze swept over me and paused for a moment at my sleeve.

I instinctively tugged it down—underneath was the scar from taking a silver arrow for him ten years ago. It still ached on rainy days. He stared at it for two seconds but made no move.

"If you hadn't been so stubborn and just agreed to break the bond back then, you wouldn't be in this mess, would you?"

I didn't respond.

He leaned in closer, lowering his voice like he was bestowing some grand favor upon me. "It's too late for all that now, I suppose. But I'm a sentimental guy. If you ever change your mind, you can always come back. The title might not be there, but the perks will be."

His meaning was crystal clear—come back and be his secret lover.

Twelve years as his secret mate wasn't enough. He wanted me to keep going.

For twelve years I'd looked after his every need like a servant. I guarded the borders, fought off rogues—I had more scars on my body than any warrior in his pack. Behind the scenes, I placated the elders, managed internal affairs, and even scrubbed the sweat stains off his sheets.

"Save it."

Callum's brow furrowed. He clearly wasn't used to hearing no from me.

His tone dripped with condescending pity. "I gave you a choice back then. And everything you did to help me build Blackridge Pack — I've never forgotten that. If you're willing to come back —"

"Back to what?" I cut him off. "Back to your pack, to keep playing the nanny who can't even use her own name?"

"Sera." His voice dropped low, heavy with that Alpha pressure. "You know how things were. An Alpha can't make decisions based on feelings alone. The pack's stability required strategic alliances—"

The banquet hall doors swung open, cutting him off.

He was about to say more when a saccharine voice rang out from the entrance—

"Callum—"

All eyes turned to the door. A woman in a Luna's gown walked in—Vivienne.

I didn't look up. I kept drinking the warm soup in my bowl. For some reason I'd been getting dizzy spells of hunger lately.

"Sera?"

Vivienne clicked over in her heels and grabbed my wrist, squeezing so hard it felt like she was trying to crush the bones. "How did you weasel your way in here?"

I gave a thin smile and quietly pulled my hand free.

Someone across the table spoke up. "And who might this be?"

Every gaze in the room swung to Callum.

Callum took the wine glass, rose to his feet with effortless composure, and wrapped his arm around Vivienne's waist.

He addressed the entire room. "Since everyone's here, let me formally introduce—Vivienne is my marked Luna.

We'll be holding the official ceremony next month. You're all welcome to attend."

So Callum was capable of publicly claiming a mate after all.

His open acknowledgment of Vivienne made my twelve secret years look like nothing but a joke.

Congratulations erupted across the hall. No one remembered how he'd treated me five years ago.

Callum's face was dark as ink."I'm her father."The words ground out through clenched teeth, his Alpha pheromones surging uncontrollably — but against Damon, that little burst of dominance was a match tossed into the ocean. It didn't even make a ripple.Damon didn't look at him.He crossed the room in a few strides and positioned himself between Callum and me and Maisie. Only then did he turn his head and level his gaze at Callum."You were the one who abandoned Sera in the first place. Am I wrong?"The first time I met Damon, I was in a state a million times worse than this.It was five years ago, in winter. After the hemorrhage, I spent two weeks in the medical center. The cost of keeping the pregnancy was astronomical — I sold the last moonstone Callum had given me, got a three-month advance from the farm owner, and scraped together just enough for the most basic treatment plan. The pup survived.A boy. He was tiny at birth, nearly half the weight of a normal wolf pup. His cry was

My knuckles went white around the phone. My whole hand was shaking."Callum, if you touch a single hair on her head, I will tear you apart."A low chuckle came through the phone — the laugh of a man who believed he held all the cards."Why would I hurt her? She's my pup.""You're NOT my daddy!" Maisie's scream pierced through the line, high and frantic. "You're not! You're not my daddy!"My heart was in my throat.I hung up and dialed Damon with trembling fingers. One ring. Two. Three. Four. No answer.I tried again. Still nothing. On the third attempt, someone picked up — not Damon. His Beta."Alpha is currently in a closed-door session of the King's Council. All communications are blocked. May I —""Maisie's been taken."Less than two seconds of silence on the other end. "I'm going in to notify Alpha right now."I called a car and gave the driver the address Callum had sent me.It was our old house from our days in Blackridge Pack. Uninhabited for five years, the yard was overgrown w

Vivienne sobbing like she couldn't breathe reminded me of myself. To be precise, it reminded me of who I was all those years ago, on that night.I was four months pregnant then. When Callum found out, he didn't say much — no joy, no displeasure. He just said "keep it quiet for now" and walked out the door to handle Pack business as usual.Around that time, Blackridge's eastern border was under frequent rogue attacks. As one of the strongest fighters in the Pack, I'd always been the one leading those missions. But once I got pregnant, I stepped back. Callum promised he'd personally oversee the defense. The alarms went off that night. Three waves of rogues hit the eastern border, more ferocious than anything we'd ever seen.I called Callum through the mindlink. No response.I tried again. Still nothing. The Pack line — shut off. The mindlink — blocked. Every channel that could reach him, all of them closed. The warriors on the border were on the verge of collapse. The Beta was screaming

"Mommy, why didn't you pick up the phone?"Maisie threw herself into my arms, nuzzling her little face against my neck, getting rainwater from her hair all over my chin."Maisie missed you so much today..."I smiled and picked her up, wrapping her small body in my coat.Callum stared at the child in my arms."Sera, she's right here. How long are you going to keep lying to me?""She's not yours.""How old is she?""Four."It had been five years since I left Blackridge. The timeline didn't add up."You're lying."Callum wasn't listening. He reached out to take Maisie from me. I sidestepped him, and Maisie clutched my collar in a panic, her tiny fingers gripping tight."I'll say this one last time — this child has nothing to do with you."I turned and walked toward the estate gates with Maisie in my arms. The moment Callum tried to follow, the guards stopped him.I walked through without looking back."Mommy, who was that man?""Nobody important.""He said he's my daddy... but I already h

The gates of Silvercrest Heights glowed with cold white light in the darkness. The aura from the guards formed an invisible wall. Before the car even came to a full stop, Callum unbuckled his seatbelt, walked around to the back, yanked my door open, and pulled me out."Sera, go in there and quit your job.""My child doesn't need you working as a servant in someone else's house. I'll provide for you."I pulled my arm free from his grip."So what if I'm a nanny?""I've done far worse. Spent three whole months hiding in an abandoned mine shaft — freezing cold in winter, surviving on a few scrawny rabbits a day. My wounds got infected, oozing with pus. I nearly died in that dark, damp hole. I guarded a temporary camp for stray wolves — in the middle of the night, a rogue crept in, and I stood watch till dawn with nothing but a stick, pregnant and alone.""I even ran errands on the black market. Places so dangerous that even enforcement wolves wouldn't set foot in them. I've been there.""W

The unbearable memories clawed at my mind. Those days after I was cast out of Blackridge Pack five years ago were a nightmare I never wanted to revisit.I left the very night I signed the Pack Severance Pact. One backpack, a few pieces of clothing, and not enough money in my pocket for a single night at an inn. Callum meant what he said — stripped clean. Twelve years of my existence erased as though I had never been there at all.I didn't dare go home to my family.A she-wolf cast out by an Alpha, pregnant on top of it all — I couldn't even bring myself to look in the direction of my family's estate. Twelve years as a secret mate had left me with no Pack rank, no social connections, and a completely blank résumé.I found an abandoned cabin on the edge of the forest, even smaller than my cottage in Blackridge. The cracks in the walls were wide enough to fit a hand through. I survived by doing odd jobs at a nearby human farm — hauling crates, washing dishes, mucking out livestock pens. A
