Wren's POV

I woke up butt naked in the same position I had passed out.

“Astra?” I called softly through the mindlink, and only got a whimper in response.

She was still hurting.

I pulled myself up, and dragged my feet to the bathroom to have a shower. I can’t believe I've passed out for over 12hours. The sky outside my window was pitch black, and the quite breathing of the occupants of this house tells me everyone’s fast asleep.

Good. I can’t imagine having to deal with anyone in this state.

My shower took longer than intended as tears wouldn’t stop rolling down my cheeks no matter how hard I tried to stop it. I was hurt. Pissed. And felt completely hollow inside.

I changed into fresh clothes, as my stomach wouldn’t stop growling–I haven’t eaten all day, and now was the perfect time to sneak in food into my room.

I was reaching for my room door when it opened from the other side, and there was Selene and Allen.

“Look babe our little slut is finally awake,” she cooed, a mysterious glint dancing behind her eyes.

I sighed in exasperation, and turned my back on them.

“Your mother would be proud, you know?” Selene called from behind. “Too bad I won’t sit idly, and make the same as my mother.”

Okay. This was new. I thought she was here to yap about how my mother was a slut, and I’m exactly the same. What’s this about not repeating the same mistake as her mother?

I turned around to look at her in hopes of getting a clue on what new madness she was on about, but instead Selene drove her fist into my ribs, knocking me over momentarily.

Jeez! I’ve forgotten just how strong she was.

Selene didn’t give me time to recover as she fisted her hands into my, pulling hard enough that I’m forced to look at her. “I’ll be damned If I let you have Allen’s child,” she sneered, digging the nails of her other hand into my cheeks and forcing my mouth open. “Now babe!”

Allen materialised in a second, with an open bottle in hand , whose content he emptied into my mouth.

I tried to spit it out, but Selene pinched my force, forcing the cold liquid down my throat.

“Now, no bastard would survive in there!” Selene shoved me to the side.

I parted my lips to say something in my defense, but instead a strangled cry escaped my lips. As the liquid fully settled in my system.

It started out in my stomach, and spread outward through my blood like something on fire.

Wolfsbane, and something else that felt like molten silver has been poured directly into my veins.

“Shut her up babe!” Selene demanded, and Allen stuffed a piece of cloth into my mouth, muffling my screams.

But that didn't stop my thrashing, or the searing pain tearing through every nerve in my body.

“Astra,” I tried reaching out to my wolf, but the wolfsbane felt like a wall going up between us brick by brick.

Panic unlike anything I'd ever known clawed its way through my chest.

The burning pain was replaced with a nerve wracking pain like someone was reaching into my chest and trying to rip Astra away with their bare hands. And the more I tried to connect with her, the farther she felt.

“Time to go babe,” I heard Selene say, and

Allen pinned me to the floor amidst my thrashing, as he tied a rope on my hands and feet with Selene's help, before finally throwing me over his shoulder and walking out my room.

I had no idea how long we walked for, but we finally stopped in front of a van.

Allen made to put me down, and the moment the sole of my bare feet touched the ground…

“...Wren” Astra called out to me so quietly I had thought I'd imagined it.

“Astra,” I breathed out in relief so hard my knees buckled…

Then white-hot pain ripped through every inch of my body.

Allen frowned. “What the–”

The ropes around my wrists and ankles snapped like rotten vines, as a howl tore through me, and standing in the place I had been was a sky-blue wolf.

Selene stumbled backwards. Allen didn't move either.

But instead of lunging at them or baring her fangs, Astra ran.

“No!” Selene screamed, the farther Astra got away from them, despite the wolfsbane trying to drag her back into the darkness.

But the earth….it kept her tethered.

Every stride gave her another breath, another strength no matter how little, to push forward.

“After her!” Selene shrieked furiously, and a growl ripped through the night air.

Allen had just shifted.

Too late. Astra was farther ahead, and had no plans of stopping.

I had no idea where we were headed but anything was better than going back.

The burning slowly became unbearable, making Astra stumble a couple of times, but she caught herself and kept going.

But there was a limit to how well a wolf induced with wolfsbane can function, as Astra's steps grew heavy, her breathing ragged, and…

A sharp whistle sliced through the night, slamming into our shoulder.

Astra howled in pain as our body lurched sideways, sending us crashing through the thick bushes, as we rolled twice down a small slope, and slamming hard against the base of a tree. The impact knocked air out of our lungs.

For a few seconds everything spun.

I tried taking control, but Astra wouldn't bulge as we were in unfamiliar territory. She tried getting back on her feet, but her legs wouldn't bulge.

The metallic scent of blood filled the air, as our eyes became heavy.

And the last thing we remembered before going under completely wa

s a pair of polished black boots stopping a few inches from our muzzle.

“That's not a  rogue.”

Wren's POV I swallowed.I couldn't remember the last time somebody had given me a gift for no reason. It sat in my chest like a stone."Thank you," I whispered."You're welcome."I finally allowed myself to look around the room in silence. "What is this place?" I asked, after a while."It's the, er, the old Reading Room. It was sealed off in the eighteen hundreds, after a fire. I found it by accident during my first week. It's got the original manuscripts of the founding scholars. Some of the oldest texts in the territory." He glanced at the shelves, with an expression I couldn't quite read. "I like it here. It's quiet."My eyes drifted over the shelves. They were crammed with books I'd only ever read about; the moon and her wolves, the treatise on the seven Lunar Cycles, the Lost Bloodlines. Goddess. I thought the existence of these books were rumoured to be false. I saw a row of scrolls in tubes, and a bundle of loose papers tied with a cord, and a heap of ancient maps rolled i

Wren's POVThe boy's gaze flicked over my shoulder.I saw him take in the sound of the voice, and the heavy, hurried footsteps, and the wild look on my face. His brows arched. "Is that Cassius Starling?" he said."Yes.""Ah." He swallowed. "Right. Er. Yes. This way."He took my wrist. His hand was cool and slightly damp, and his fingers were stained with ink. He tugged me around the cart, and through a narrow gap between two shelves, and down a dim, crooked passage lined with dusty periodicals that I hadn't known existed."Where are we going?" I whispered."Somewhere he can't find you.""He'll smell me.""Not where we're going."The passage dead-ended against a tall shelf of crumbling theology.I stared at it."Is this…?""Shh."He reached up, and pressed something on the underside of the third shelf, and with a soft click, a section of the bookcase swung inward on a hidden door.Behind it was darkness. And the smell of old paper, leather, and ink."Quickly," the boy whisper

Wren's POVI stayed away from the common area in the dorm for three days.I wasn't hiding. Nessa was two doors down, and she was waiting for me, with her wide eyes and her biscuits and her quivering little smile. Every time I opened the door of Room 214, I heard her door open too, and her voice calling out almost immediately."Wren! Hi!"I had no idea what I would do if I saw her. I had no idea what Astra would do.So I took my books to the library. It was the only place on campus that felt like it belonged to me. There were reading rooms on three floors, and long oak tables beneath green-shaded lamps, and shelves that ran up to the ceiling. On the first day, I read a hundred pages of Pack law.On the second, I wrote two essays. On the third, I stopped pretending to work, and sat at a table in the corner of the Archive Wing with a copy of the Treaty of Ashfall open in front of me and my pen untouched, thinking about my eyes.Back at the restroom Astra has refused

Wren's POVI stayed in that cubicle for a long time.I sat on the closed lid of the toilet with my elbows on my knees and my forehead pressed into my palms, and I waited for my body to stop shaking. Somewhere down the corridor, a tap dripped and a girl laughed, her footsteps clicked away across the tiles. The ache in my skin had gone.It had vanished as suddenly as it came, drained out of me and left me shivering and strangely light. My hands looked ordinary.I turned them over, and back, and over again, as if I might catch some trace of what had happened. What was that?"Astra?" I whispered.Nothing."Astra. Please.""I'm here," she said at last, in a voice so small that it frightened me more than the rage had."What was that?"She said nothing and the cubicle was very quiet.I closed my eyes.Of all the things she could have said, that was the one I hadn't expected. Pleading for a separation from the moon goddess. Astra wasn't a wolf who was frightened of t

Wren's POVThe hall went quiet.I turned my head but Nessa was staring at her shoes. Tessa Voss, in the front row, was examining her nails. Even Henrik had flushed a dull red."I wasn't told about the meetings," I said."The group chat shows otherwise.""The group chat shows that I was informed after they'd started.""That's a serious accusation.""It's the truth.""Do you have evidence?"I opened my mouth; I had the messages and the timestamps. I had a perfectly organised evidence proving that three people had deliberately excluded me from a project that was worth thirty percent of my grade. And I could hear, in the very back of my mind, a small, cold voice that sounded like mine..If you complain, it gets worse. It's the only thing that makes it stop. When they get bored.“Wrenly Ashbourne.” Astra said in a voice so threatening I shuddered.."No," I said, quietly. "I don't."Professor Alder gave me a long look."I see. Well. I'll note it. Your group will receive its mark. For th

Wren's POVI should have known something was wrong when Nessa Ward offered to carry my books."You don't have to do that," I said, startled, as she appeared at my elbow in the corridor outside Pack Governance with her thin arms outstretched and a hopeful smile on her face.Hell, I have only ever met her a handful of times and she’d seem like a sweet person. "I don't mind!"I glanced down at my book and back at her, dazed. "They're heavy.""I'm stronger than I look." She slipped the stack from my arms before I could argue. "Honestly. It's fine. I just wanted to say hi. We live on the same floor, don't we? I'm two doors down. 216.""Yeah. We've met.” "I've been shy." She gave a breathless little laugh. "I didn't want to bother you.""You're not bothering me.""I'm so glad." She beamed.I looked at her.She was small and thin, with brown hair tucked behind her ears and a cardigan so large that the cuffs hung past her fingers. She had a nervous, darting way of looking at people, as
