By the time I rushed back into the room, I couldn't find him. After about two careful scans of the room I finally found home disappearing down a hallway. I raced after him trying not to bump into anyone on the way. . I could still recall the last time I had stumbled on Xander. He didn't have any business affiliations. All I knew him to be was the alpha, not a businessman. Or maybe that was one of the things that he had kept from me while we were together as well as his relationship with my sister. I slipped through the crowd and into the hallway. The guard at the mouth of the door had to stop me and confirm my identity. “I'm am the Luna!” I said with pride. “Sorry for stopping you, your highness. But you have to understand that only royalty is allowed to go through here.” I spotted a room at the end of the door. “What's down there?” “It's Alpha Damion's chambers. Only those summoned by the Alpha are allowed to pass.” I had to think of a lie, fast. “Well, I have been summoned by the Alpha.” “Hold on a minute. I have to call him to confirm you have an appointment.” “Call him? I wouldn't do that if I were you. You see, this is a very important meeting and it has already begun. It would be better if you didn't interrupt the Alpha.” He looked between me and his Walkie talkie but my convincing tone won him over. He smiled, letting me slip through. I got to the end of the ball on my tiptoes making sure to be as quiet as possible. Luckily for me the room's door was slightly parted. I leaned as close as I could and listened. The first voice I heard was that of Xander. “Thank you so much for hosting me. It's an honour…” “Save the pleasantries. I had to scrap out something important on my schedule for this so it better be worth it.” Damion still has that thick tone clinging to his voice. I could imagine what the atmosphere inside that room felt like. “I like that. So I'll cut to the chase. It's about your business clashing with mine.” “What is that supposed to mean?” Damion blurted out in an arrogant tone. “We are both huge owners of fashion companies and obviously competitors. However, I believe that it's best that wee stick to our territories.” So Xander was into the fashion business. He sounded like he owned a grand company and so did Damion. That reminds me of the time when I was younger and had dreams of going into fashion. But I had been discouraged by Xander. He had said it was too competitive and took all my ideas from me. He always enjoyed taking from me, that monster. I can't believe he stole my ideas and went to create a company with it. “You're giving me a speech, Alpha Xander. What is the matter?” “Your company is opening a branch in my pack. I would have used force to kick them out but I decided to handle the matter with peace. So tell your men to pack up and find somewhere else to hitch their tent.” I could hear slurping. It must have come from Damion. As soon as the cup kissed the table, he cleared his throat. “I can't do that, Xander.” “What? Why?” “It's not my fault that people from your pack like my brand more than yours. It's just a matter of demand and supply. As a businessman you should understand that.” He spoke so calmly that it was easy to dismiss the case as a matter of no significance. “Are you trying to take down my company?” “Why do you say that?” Something about the way he asked betraying and taking down the company was his intention. “You know that my company is suffering great backslash from the media and everyone.” “How is that my fault? You were the one who couldn't keep his bulge in his pants. It was your sexual scandal that ruined your company's name.” “Don't sound so righteous. The only reason why you have a smile on your face is because you haven't been caught yet.” A sexual scandal? Well that is not out of the ordinary for a man like Xander. “You know that I'm barely trying to keep up sales. Don't storm in and try to out stage me.” “You are down in sales, I thought you just called me your competition,” he blurted out, his tone laced with sarcasm. “Make fun of me all you want as long as you do what you know is right.” He sighed. “You know it's an unspoken rule in business. You stick to your territory and I do the same to mine. Now that there has been no escalation of the issue, I'm asking you to stop.” “The answer remains the same.” “Why are you doing this? Is it some sort of power play? Just play the rules so we both can be happy.” “I don't know if you noticed but I'm not a man who plays by the rules. Now if that is all, you can take your leave. What you should be more concerned about is making your products good enough. Word in the street is that they are whack?” “You are shaming my company?” “I'm giving you the truth that no one else in your company is going to be daring enough to give to you. Your designs are out of date. You need fresh ideas. In the beginning you made amazing dresses and then you fell off.” After he had stolen my ideas. It brought a smile to my face learning that he wasn't able to keep up with my vision. If only he had not tried to screw me over, I would have helped his business back to its glory. “A lot has happened since then,” he said, sighing. I'm sure at that moment he was being plagued with regret. “Just do as I asked.” I heard his chair scrape the floor. He was getting up to leave. I heard footsteps. They were headed for the door. I looked around. There was no way to run. If I tiptoes. I wouldn't make it in time without being caught. I just accepted my fate and leaned on the wall as Xander stepped out of the door.Lyra(Mia’s)POV The ride back was quiet. Veronica had contacted Alpha Damion and out of the “goodness of his heart” he had sent a car down our way.He was a quiet fellow and I wouldn't have it any other way.Just get me as far as possible from this place before I lose my cool. When you spend an entire week on the ground with lions, the greatest treasure you can hope for becomes a breath of fresh air.I'm not talking about the one oozing in from the car window. The gift is being able to breathe without fear that in that second, a killer was crawling up on you.I couldn't call it peace. The chaos was far from being killed.I was yet to get my payback.“Have you been able to get what I asked for?” I inquired from Veronica. She had the same dazed look from the minute she hopped into the car.I had to tap her thigh slightly to get back her attention.“I asked a question and you still haven't answered. What’s going on?”“Sorry. I zoned out. It’s just that I can't believe what happened in th
Xander’s POV“Come back here!” Nyla yelled, but I ignored her, pulling the door open and walking outside. There she was, standing with Veronica, who grabbed the pieces of luggage. Was I going out there to plead with her to stay? Far from it! I had done that already, and it had ended with the door almost stealing my nose.A change of strategy was necessary.“You have no way to get home!” I announced from the porch. “I was the one who brought you here, and I am the only one who can take you back. Just come inside and we can talk this out.”“Stay away from her!” Veronica yelled. She turned to Mia. “Do you want me to take care of him?”She smiled for the first time in the last hour. Despite her clenched chin, it still managed to look less of a threat to her assistant.“Just go down the road and get the vehicle that was sent, and I'll be with you shortly.”Veronica looked between both of us before taking the bags further down the road. Her eyes didn't leave me for more than five seconds. J
Xander’s POVI would have preferred to take a leap into hell rather than stand in this room. It was better to have a thousand trombones yell in my ears than have to watch the four other individuals stare at each other with deafening unspoken words. There was no escape. Everyone had been touched, torched. Yes, the words burned, leaving scars with bruises of their own.For one thing, there was something more dangerous than the bubble of threats and truths that had just exploded in the air. It was the tension that came afterward.“Go ahead, call her bluff,” Nyla’s voice broke through the thick air. “Tell her that you are going to stand behind me and make sure that her lies don't see the light of day.”That would be a lot easier if I didn't know the truth. I had a huge part to play in it after all.“Are you out of your mind?” I whispered. “Does that woman look like someone who would be throwing around promises like that for fun? She is going to keep to her word,” I hissed. “I told you to
Lyra(Mia’s) POV“Don't listen to them!” Xander pleaded. “The words you just heard here are just words of two angry adults.”I scoffed. “Don't patronize me, Xander. You should know better. I am not a fool that you should toss around anyhow you like.”“I would never…”“I heard her, Xander. The only reason you brought me here is to exploit my talents. As soon as you were done, you should have locked me out to the curb. You don't have to lie. The truth about who you truly are is in the open.”Xander hissed. The apologetic tone was out the window and the cold voice had returned. “I am not the one who should be getting the blame here. The person you should be mad at should be the woman who just tried to kill you.”All eyes turned to Mia.I scoffed before looking at her. “And you, did you really think it would be so easy to get rid of me? I knew something was wrong from the start.”“Why didn't it work?” she asked, looking baffled. \I planned everything perfectly. I even applied the poison, w
Lyra(Mia’s)POVEven Veronica was worried when she saw me begin to cough.“What's going on?” she whispered as she leaned closer. “Didn't you switch the poison bottles?”I didn't tell her about this part. I wanted everyone to be taken by surprise.“What is going on? What have you done, Nyla?” Xander yelled out in frustration. “How dare you try to spoil our visitor's drink?!”“I just did what I felt is necessary to be done. Don't act so innocent. We have no more use for her. Someone had to do it!”She didn't even care to deny the allegations. I had thought that she would put up some kind of fight or at least try to keep up with the good girl act.“You shouldn't have done that. That woman had been nothing but helpful to us. Why would you want to kill her?” she asked, her voice trembling.I observed everyone's reaction. This was the only way I could find out who had changed after all of this time. But no one seemed unsettled by what was going on.All they did was keep on blaming her. The o
Xander’s POV“I look at all the faces here and all I can see is joy. A few days ago, we had all lost hope but with the coming of our saviour here,” I paused to point to her, “we have been able to achieve the impossible that was needed to restore our name.”They all applauded her and she waved. I could tell that she was getting uncomfortable with the spotlight being on her, so I immediately drew back their attention.“She has been very helpful even when she shouldn't have. Don't worry, you all will have the time to glance at the dresses when the time comes.”They murmured, but I raised my glass and silence reigned. They raised their glasses as well.“Before we begin to dig into this dinner that has been prepared for her, I would love to raise a toast to our knight in shining armour. Cheers!”“Cheers!” they retorted in unison.“Thank you so much. You have a good heart,” my mother-in-law began. “I just wish I could have gotten you as a daughter. You are so special that I would treat you
