THIRTY-NINE

Zachary didn’t turn once.

Clarissa had no idea what she was going to do. Archer’s hands on her arm made her acknowledge his presence. A couple of people were taking their seats, but she stood rooted to the spot.

“Who are you calling, dear?” He queried softly.

She couldn’t respond. Instead, she moved slightly away from him. “Zachary!” She called once more.

It may have been madness to make him know she was right there, but it was definitely better than playing chase with him. She could feel Archer’s hand on the small of her back.

“Clarissa, tell me what the matter is. You don’t know anyone here,” Archer said with worry.

She turned to him slightly, her throat tight. “There is someone I know. When he comes just act normal and stay out of the conversation. Sit down, Archer,” she said stiffly.

He didn’t obey her but stood by her side instead. The least Clarissa wanted was to drag Archer into her problems. She had come earlier to ask for his help, but she hadn’t dared to stick to that reque
