Kiara

I don’t know how Thomas convinced me to go visit his mother. By the time I wanted to back out of my decision, we had already boarded a flight back to the city. I swore I’d never return, and I didn’t keep my word.

“It’s going to be a pleasant visit with my mother. We’ll have lunch with her and go straight back to the hotel,” Thomas assured me.

Months had passed since I left the city, and during that time, Thomas had become a true friend. One night of weakness, he and I kissed, and that’s how our love story began. I forgot about his brother, Jake. I forgot about the love story we once had.

But my babies reminded me he left his mark. Still, Thomas wanted to help raise them and be the father Jake never was.

I looked out the car window. The houses slowly disappeared behind us. The tall black gates appeared in the distance, coming into view. We had arrived at Helena’s house, his mother. My mother-in-law.

I didn’t know how she’d react to seeing her youngest son with his older brother’s ex-wife. This was awkward.

I definitely shouldn’t have come.

But when Helena greeted us and hugged us both, I felt some of the pressure lift. Still, it didn’t disappear completely. She smiled at me, but there was tension in her face. Her way of looking at me wasn’t hostile, but I could tell something was there.

And I realized what it was the moment we sat down to eat. He was there.

Jake.

With her. Irina.

The exchange of looks between Jake and me was inevitable. We both looked, surprised and far from happy to see each other. The room was filled with tension and hostility. I wanted to run away.

Instinctively, I covered my belly, protecting my children. It was fear speaking through me. The fear of him seeing them, but it was too late. Jake had already seen.

“Whose baby is that?” he demanded. He knew the answer, but I’d never give him the certainty.

I would never confess they were his.

I felt tightness in my chest and a flutter inside me, the babies moving, as if they knew what was happening.

“They’re Thomas’s,” I lied shamelessly.

Thomas looked at me for a moment, and I looked back at him. I silently begged him to take us out of there soon, but Jake grabbed his jacket from the chair and took Irina’s hand.

Did I say I forgot about Jake? I lied. Seeing him again… everything was still there. Inside me.

Who am I kidding? I never stopped loving him. Nothing had changed within me. Jake was still the owner of my heart, even while I tried to strip him of that place to give it to Thomas.

Jake took a few angry steps forward, then stopped abruptly, his furious eyes locking on me again.

“They are?” he asked.

“What?” I replied quietly.

“Plural. There’s more than one baby?” He narrowed his eyes.

“That’s none of your business,” Thomas cut in. He stepped in front of me so Jake couldn’t see me, but it was pointless.

I shifted aside, meeting Jake’s disgusted look. The same expression he gave me the last time we saw each other.

“You’re a whore, Kiara. I should’ve never married you. If I had known… Whore!” he shouted.

I stepped back, shaken. Irina’s lie was still standing, and I had reinforced it by lying about our children.

I convinced myself I’d done the right thing. The way he treated me… Jake deserved never to know about his kids. He would never care for them the way Thomas would. Jake was a bad man. He was the real shameless one in this story.

And she… Irina…

“Having fun?” I asked my sister, who was holding back a smile.

“See, Jake? I told you. She’s cruel. She didn’t care about sleeping with your brother while you were away.”

“Yes, you were right all along. I never doubted your word, Irina.”

My eyes burned with tears. The lump in my throat fought to break me. I swallowed the pain so I wouldn’t look weak in front of them, but my racing heartbeat gave me away.

Thomas looked at me and took my hand to leave.

“I’m sorry, Mom. You didn’t tell me Jake would be here. If I had known, we never would’ve come. I didn’t want to expose my woman to him. We’re leaving,” Thomas said firmly.

I wanted to run away.

“We’re leaving too,” Jake said behind us.

“No, please,” Helena pleaded.

“You shouldn’t have invited us both,” Jake snapped. Just as harsh as he’d always been with me.

“I didn’t know this would happen. I didn’t know Kiara was your girlfriend now.”

“I’m his fiancée,” I lied again. The room fell silent. Thomas’s footsteps stopped abruptly.

We weren’t getting married. There were no plans. But I wanted to hurt Jake the way he hurt me. I wanted to wound him deeply for believing Irina and for calling me a whore.

Thomas started walking again, but Jake froze when I dropped the false announcement.

“Thomas, son, please,” Helena insisted, but he ignored her.

“Goodbye, Mom.”

“I’m dying!” she shouted, stopping us in our tracks.

JakeGetting the bullet out with my fingers was nearly impossible.I was nervous, my brother’s life in my hands. I could almost feel my mother’s fury, and Kiara’s, when I told them I couldn’t save Thomas. I could already see the hatred growing inside me toward myself for failing to save him and letting him die.“Damn it! Damn bullet!” I shouted.Thomas was already delirious. He wasn’t thinking clearly and struggled to stay awake. His skin was burning with fever, and his body, besides turning pale, was beginning to show green and purple veins. That was a bad sign.“Tell her I love her very much…” he whispered, and that made me tremble even more. He knew what was coming, and so did I. Thomas wouldn’t last much longer. “She’s the woman of my life… You have to… take care of her. Please,” he begged.“I’ll take care of her, but you’ll be the one to care for her as her future husband,” I said. The words burned in my throat because my heart didn’t like the answer I gave him. But I had to give

Jake“You have the perfect opportunity to be with her without me in the way,” he told me, fear in his voice.Thomas pretended to be strong, but I knew death scared him, because it had scared me too when I stood in front of it.“Are you seriously thinking about that right now? You’ve got a bullet in you,” I said, tearing his shirt and using it to wipe away the blood pouring out of him.I needed space to clearly see the bullet. I had to remove it, and all that blood was making it impossible to work calmly. My betas had taken down all the members of Derian’s pack. A few were dead, while others were being tortured for information about Derian’s whereabouts. That was one of the differences between Derian and me. I wasn’t a coward who hid behind his pack. I wouldn’t abandon my betas. I would always fight alongside them, like today. I didn’t leave with Kiara. I stayed with them in the war because that’s what a good Alpha does: fight with his pack against injustice.Derian simply ran when thi

JakeWhen I saw Kiara in that chair —tied up, dirty, and pale— I felt like I could completely lose my sanity. I felt like I could kill everyone, even those who weren’t to blame. But I knew I couldn’t lose my head at that moment because my most important duty was to get her out of there safe and sound. And for that, I needed a bit of my sanity. But the enemies would taste every drop of my fury.I kissed her because I couldn’t bear to see her pale, lonely lips. I felt her mouth as proof that everything was over. I tasted her lips like a reward after spending days without sleep just to find her.And I did. I found her alive.I noticed the lock of hair that had been cut, hidden among the rest of her hair. But I knew every part of her, and I caught the detail. Rage consumed me, and I wanted to kill Derian, though not before torturing him.Thomas came down the stairs and saw us together, but he missed the part where I kissed her, and I felt angry because he didn’t see it. I wanted him to kn

KiaraI had to start the car, but guilt relentlessly took hold of me. I didn’t want to leave them, but Jake and Thomas had given me a clear order. What if I drove away and they came back right after? I couldn’t just leave like that, so I waited two more minutes. I promised myself that if they didn’t appear within those two minutes, I would leave and do as I was told. But then I heard cracking sounds behind the car, and my instincts forced me to turn around to see who it was. For a brief second, I hoped it was Jake, or Thomas, or both, but that made no sense. They were in the opposite direction. So who could be behind me?Derian.I looked back, gripping the steering wheel tightly in case I needed to drive off. And I saw him. I saw Derian walking slowly toward me with a smile on his face. He wasn’t in a hurry. He wasn’t going to hurt me or kidnap me again, but he was going to scare me and torture me psychologically.I threw the car into reverse.Fear acted for me.I hit him without thin

Kiara“Where’s the car?” I asked, since I couldn’t see anything.“A few meters from here. We couldn’t just pull up and let them see us,” Jake answered. That was when I noticed Jake’s and Thomas’s clothes. Both of them were dirty, not only with the enemies’ blood, but with mud and grass.“We had to crawl so they wouldn’t see us. The rain helped dull our scent. It took us several minutes to get here, but it doesn’t matter because now we’re going to run to the car,” my boyfriend explained.“If we tell you to run, you run. No looking back, Kiara. No matter what happens. Here...” he pulled the car keys out of his pocket. “You’ll see the car if you keep running straight ahead. Don’t wait more than two minutes for us if we don’t reach you, understand? You’ll have to drive away as far as you can and get help. My phone is in the car, so you can use it to call someone from the pack for backup.”I frowned and shook my head. I didn’t want to do this alone. His words made it clear they wouldn’t be

KiaraJake looked at me as if I were crazy. As if being kidnapped had changed the way I acted and spoke.I noticed his brows furrow. I knew he would defend her. I knew he didn’t believe me. To be honest, I didn’t expect him to believe me right away. Judging by the way he treated Irina, it wasn’t going to be easy to convince him. That hurt, but I couldn’t expect more from him. Irina had trapped him, manipulated him so much that Jake himself was no longer someone I could fully trust. The way he looked at me hurt; the way his eyes told me not to say something stupid. But why would I say something stupid right now? This wasn’t about jealousy. This wasn’t about him. It was about the fact that Jake had no idea he was sleeping with the enemy every night. Jake had replaced me with my sister, believing she had always been there to help him, but that wasn’t true. It was only a slow plan of destruction. A well-crafted one. Even I had fallen for the story that Irina was in love with Jake and woul

Kiara I woke up with a low groan, pulled out of sleep by a warm ache rising from my belly up to my chest. I blinked a few times before figuring out where I was. Kiara Kiara was sleeping deeply on the couch, wrapped in a blanket that barely covered her belly.
