Kiara

I don’t know how Thomas convinced me to go visit his mother. By the time I wanted to back out of my decision, we had already boarded a flight back to the city. I swore I’d never return, and I didn’t keep my word.

“It’s going to be a pleasant visit with my mother. We’ll have lunch with her and go straight back to the hotel,” Thomas assured me.

Months had passed since I left the city, and during that time, Thomas had become a true friend. One night of weakness, he and I kissed, and that’s how our love story began. I forgot about his brother, Jake. I forgot about the love story we once had.

But my babies reminded me he left his mark. Still, Thomas wanted to help raise them and be the father Jake never was.

I looked out the car window. The houses slowly disappeared behind us. The tall black gates appeared in the distance, coming into view. We had arrived at Helena’s house, his mother. My mother-in-law.

I didn’t know how she’d react to seeing her youngest son with his older brother’s ex-wife. This was awkward.

I definitely shouldn’t have come.

But when Helena greeted us and hugged us both, I felt some of the pressure lift. Still, it didn’t disappear completely. She smiled at me, but there was tension in her face. Her way of looking at me wasn’t hostile, but I could tell something was there.

And I realized what it was the moment we sat down to eat. He was there.

Jake.

With her. Irina.

The exchange of looks between Jake and me was inevitable. We both looked, surprised and far from happy to see each other. The room was filled with tension and hostility. I wanted to run away.

Instinctively, I covered my belly, protecting my children. It was fear speaking through me. The fear of him seeing them, but it was too late. Jake had already seen.

“Whose baby is that?” he demanded. He knew the answer, but I’d never give him the certainty.

I would never confess they were his.

I felt tightness in my chest and a flutter inside me, the babies moving, as if they knew what was happening.

“They’re Thomas’s,” I lied shamelessly.

Thomas looked at me for a moment, and I looked back at him. I silently begged him to take us out of there soon, but Jake grabbed his jacket from the chair and took Irina’s hand.

Did I say I forgot about Jake? I lied. Seeing him again… everything was still there. Inside me.

Who am I kidding? I never stopped loving him. Nothing had changed within me. Jake was still the owner of my heart, even while I tried to strip him of that place to give it to Thomas.

Jake took a few angry steps forward, then stopped abruptly, his furious eyes locking on me again.

“They are?” he asked.

“What?” I replied quietly.

“Plural. There’s more than one baby?” He narrowed his eyes.

“That’s none of your business,” Thomas cut in. He stepped in front of me so Jake couldn’t see me, but it was pointless.

I shifted aside, meeting Jake’s disgusted look. The same expression he gave me the last time we saw each other.

“You’re a whore, Kiara. I should’ve never married you. If I had known… Whore!” he shouted.

I stepped back, shaken. Irina’s lie was still standing, and I had reinforced it by lying about our children.

I convinced myself I’d done the right thing. The way he treated me… Jake deserved never to know about his kids. He would never care for them the way Thomas would. Jake was a bad man. He was the real shameless one in this story.

And she… Irina…

“Having fun?” I asked my sister, who was holding back a smile.

“See, Jake? I told you. She’s cruel. She didn’t care about sleeping with your brother while you were away.”

“Yes, you were right all along. I never doubted your word, Irina.”

My eyes burned with tears. The lump in my throat fought to break me. I swallowed the pain so I wouldn’t look weak in front of them, but my racing heartbeat gave me away.

Thomas looked at me and took my hand to leave.

“I’m sorry, Mom. You didn’t tell me Jake would be here. If I had known, we never would’ve come. I didn’t want to expose my woman to him. We’re leaving,” Thomas said firmly.

I wanted to run away.

“We’re leaving too,” Jake said behind us.

“No, please,” Helena pleaded.

“You shouldn’t have invited us both,” Jake snapped. Just as harsh as he’d always been with me.

“I didn’t know this would happen. I didn’t know Kiara was your girlfriend now.”

“I’m his fiancée,” I lied again. The room fell silent. Thomas’s footsteps stopped abruptly.

We weren’t getting married. There were no plans. But I wanted to hurt Jake the way he hurt me. I wanted to wound him deeply for believing Irina and for calling me a whore.

Thomas started walking again, but Jake froze when I dropped the false announcement.

“Thomas, son, please,” Helena insisted, but he ignored her.

“Goodbye, Mom.”

“I’m dying!” she shouted, stopping us in our tracks.

Jake The long night had ended, and I just wanted to get into bed and rest. I closed the front door with more force than necessary, as if that slam could get rid of the rage inside me, but it didn’t. I felt the need to break something to release the tension, but I couldn’t behave like that. Not with my wife so close. I loosened the knot of my tie to breathe better, trying to convince myself that the silence of my home would help quiet my thoughts, but the silence was even worse. Irina walked behind me, the sound of her heels practically stepping on my shadow. She was upset; we had barely spoken since she got mad at me. I tried talking to her at the party after a while, but she was angry enough not to even listen. “Are you going to tell me what happened?” she asked as soon as I left my jacket on the couch. We were already arguing

JakeThe party was full of people from the company: assistants, receptionists, partners, and cleaning staff. The organization of the event was something my assistants handled because I didn’t have time to think about parties. I didn’t like them, to be honest, but my mother and father always hosted them in past years, so it had become a tradition.I shouldn’t have felt nervous, but I was. I wasn’t used to that feeling, but the last few days of my life had taken chaotic turns.I stood beside Irina, my wife. She spoke animatedly with a group of partners while my mind was somewhere else. Or rather, with someone else. Someone I knew would be attending the event. As if my thoughts had summoned her, Kiara and Thomas appeared through the huge entrance doors of the hall.I saw her looking so beautiful. Kiara. My ex-wife, the mother of my children. And my brother’s girlfriend…She walked in holding Thomas’s arm, clinging to him as if he were her protector. My breath stopped without my permissio

Kiara Ever since I left the city, I never thought I would end up at another elegant party organized by Jake and Thomas’s company. With everything that was happening, it was hard to imagine that they were business partners, brothers who hated each other. They were two brilliant minds who inherited important positions in a company and were forced by Juliette to share the responsibility. And I… I was there in a long dress I bought for a party I didn’t even want to attend. As soon as I walked into the hall with Thomas at my side, the warm lights reflected on the decorated walls, and the murmur of the crowd filled my ears. It was annoying, because I was annoyed. Thomas walked next to me, impeccable in his black suit, with his imposing posture as always. I felt protected beside him, yet still exposed. I felt everyone’s eyes on me. “Are you okay, Kiara?” he asked, leaning closer so I could

Jake I hadn’t planned on telling her today. I didn’t even know if I wanted to say it out loud to anyone yet, but the words had already been stuck in my throat since I found out that morning, and my mother had been looking at me strangely ever since I walked in, because she knew me perfectly well and could tell something was wrong. I walked into the guest room with her and closed the door behind me. I didn’t know how to start talking, but she asked first. “Jake,” she finally said. “What’s going on?” I swallowed. I leaned my elbow against the window frame and rubbed my forehead. “Mom… I need to tell you something.” She straightened her back as if bracing herself for a blow. I let out a breath. “Irina is pregnant.” For a second, she didn’t react. She didn’t say anything. Just that damn silence, as sharp as my own thoughts. After a moment, Mom frowned. She didn’t look very happy with the news; she had never liked Irina. “Is the baby yours?” Indignation shot through me so hard

Kiara I went back to the living room slowly, my legs trembling. I tried to make my breathing sound normal, as if my heart hadn’t stopped inside my chest the moment I heard those words from the hallway. I sat down again on the sofa where I’d been before. I pressed my hands against my knees to stop them from shaking, but it didn’t help much. The hollow feeling in my stomach kept growing. I still can’t believe Irina is pregnant with his child. With my ex-husband’s child. But… why am I even surprised? He himself said that he wanted to be a father with Irina, that they were trying to have a baby. I didn’t think it was actually true. I thought he said it to hurt me, but he meant it. So why did he look so worried? I guess because he didn’t expect to have two more children with me. Those words ran through my veins like ice… or fire. I couldn’t tell which hurt more: the news itself, or the way Jake’s voice had broken when he said it. He sounded so lost. He didn’t sound happy. There was n

KiaraI woke up feeling a little better than the last few days. I felt more energetic. Not enough to stay on my feet for hours without getting dizzy, but at least I didn’t have persistent nausea anymore.Thomas brought me breakfast to the living room. Things were strange between us; we barely talked.“I’ll get it,” Thomas said from the hallway when he heard the doorbell.I didn’t even need to look at him to know he wasn’t happy. I didn’t have to guess it, his voice made it obvious. Ever since Jake had started coming every morning to make sure I was okay, Thomas had been irritated. Too irritated. More protective and possessive than ever. It was a bit exhausting.I heard voices. Thomas’s voice was sharp, and the other one was Juliette’s.“Let him in,” she ordered.“Mom,” Thomas protested, annoyed.“I’m not going to deny entry to my other son, Thomas,” she replied firmly, and he couldn’t argue.I stayed still, trying not to look impatient to see Jake walk in. He had been on my mind these
