Kiara

I don’t know how Thomas convinced me to go visit his mother. By the time I wanted to back out of my decision, we had already boarded a flight back to the city. I swore I’d never return, and I didn’t keep my word.

“It’s going to be a pleasant visit with my mother. We’ll have lunch with her and go straight back to the hotel,” Thomas assured me.

Months had passed since I left the city, and during that time, Thomas had become a true friend. One night of weakness, he and I kissed, and that’s how our love story began. I forgot about his brother, Jake. I forgot about the love story we once had.

But my babies reminded me he left his mark. Still, Thomas wanted to help raise them and be the father Jake never was.

I looked out the car window. The houses slowly disappeared behind us. The tall black gates appeared in the distance, coming into view. We had arrived at Helena’s house, his mother. My mother-in-law.

I didn’t know how she’d react to seeing her youngest son with his older brother’s ex-wife. This was awkward.

I definitely shouldn’t have come.

But when Helena greeted us and hugged us both, I felt some of the pressure lift. Still, it didn’t disappear completely. She smiled at me, but there was tension in her face. Her way of looking at me wasn’t hostile, but I could tell something was there.

And I realized what it was the moment we sat down to eat. He was there.

Jake.

With her. Irina.

The exchange of looks between Jake and me was inevitable. We both looked, surprised and far from happy to see each other. The room was filled with tension and hostility. I wanted to run away.

Instinctively, I covered my belly, protecting my children. It was fear speaking through me. The fear of him seeing them, but it was too late. Jake had already seen.

“Whose baby is that?” he demanded. He knew the answer, but I’d never give him the certainty.

I would never confess they were his.

I felt tightness in my chest and a flutter inside me, the babies moving, as if they knew what was happening.

“They’re Thomas’s,” I lied shamelessly.

Thomas looked at me for a moment, and I looked back at him. I silently begged him to take us out of there soon, but Jake grabbed his jacket from the chair and took Irina’s hand.

Did I say I forgot about Jake? I lied. Seeing him again… everything was still there. Inside me.

Who am I kidding? I never stopped loving him. Nothing had changed within me. Jake was still the owner of my heart, even while I tried to strip him of that place to give it to Thomas.

Jake took a few angry steps forward, then stopped abruptly, his furious eyes locking on me again.

“They are?” he asked.

“What?” I replied quietly.

“Plural. There’s more than one baby?” He narrowed his eyes.

“That’s none of your business,” Thomas cut in. He stepped in front of me so Jake couldn’t see me, but it was pointless.

I shifted aside, meeting Jake’s disgusted look. The same expression he gave me the last time we saw each other.

“You’re a whore, Kiara. I should’ve never married you. If I had known… Whore!” he shouted.

I stepped back, shaken. Irina’s lie was still standing, and I had reinforced it by lying about our children.

I convinced myself I’d done the right thing. The way he treated me… Jake deserved never to know about his kids. He would never care for them the way Thomas would. Jake was a bad man. He was the real shameless one in this story.

And she… Irina…

“Having fun?” I asked my sister, who was holding back a smile.

“See, Jake? I told you. She’s cruel. She didn’t care about sleeping with your brother while you were away.”

“Yes, you were right all along. I never doubted your word, Irina.”

My eyes burned with tears. The lump in my throat fought to break me. I swallowed the pain so I wouldn’t look weak in front of them, but my racing heartbeat gave me away.

Thomas looked at me and took my hand to leave.

“I’m sorry, Mom. You didn’t tell me Jake would be here. If I had known, we never would’ve come. I didn’t want to expose my woman to him. We’re leaving,” Thomas said firmly.

I wanted to run away.

“We’re leaving too,” Jake said behind us.

“No, please,” Helena pleaded.

“You shouldn’t have invited us both,” Jake snapped. Just as harsh as he’d always been with me.

“I didn’t know this would happen. I didn’t know Kiara was your girlfriend now.”

“I’m his fiancée,” I lied again. The room fell silent. Thomas’s footsteps stopped abruptly.

We weren’t getting married. There were no plans. But I wanted to hurt Jake the way he hurt me. I wanted to wound him deeply for believing Irina and for calling me a whore.

Thomas started walking again, but Jake froze when I dropped the false announcement.

“Thomas, son, please,” Helena insisted, but he ignored her.

“Goodbye, Mom.”

“I’m dying!” she shouted, stopping us in our tracks.

KiaraI was in the maternity ward holding Hanna, while Juliette held Blake.“At least these little ones are fine,” Juliette said, gazing lovingly at Blake. “We couldn’t save one, but two babies are safe, and that’s what matters.”“Yes, but the baby is gone, and that’s really affecting Jake. You saw how he looked. He was devastated.”“Kiara, can I ask you a favor?”I looked up at her. It seemed important.“What is it?”“Don’t talk to Jake unless it’s necessary because of the babies. Don’t try to give him your condolences or anything like that.”My shoulders tensed, and I sought refuge in my baby’s face, but I didn’t like what she was asking of me.“Why not? Is there something wrong with that?”“Jake needs to focus on his wife right now, and you’re not part of that equation. I don’t want to be harsh with you, sweetheart, but you know Jake feels something for you, and he can’t have you on his mind right now. He has to take care of the family he’s trying to build. You know I don’t agree w

JakeMy brother told me he was sorry when he saw me walking toward him. Mom gave me a warm hug to comfort me, but nothing helped. No words, no promises, nothing. Nothing would bring that baby’s life back, much less take away the guilt I carried for not being able to protect my family the way I was supposed to.I’m a failure. That’s what I am.I knew Kiara was standing in front of me, behind my mother, Juliette, and Thomas, barely two meters away. I could feel her gaze on me, but I didn’t pay attention. My eyes ached to look at her, but it wasn’t right. Not now. Not after everything.Irina was waiting for me in the room once she woke up.I was cold with Kiara on the phone, I know that. I know she was kind to me, but I didn’t have the energy or the will to keep the conversation going. It was a mistake, but I made it consciously and ignored Kiara until Irina’s doctor startled me from behind and told me I could go in to see her.Thomas and my mother were going to take Kiara to see my chil

KiaraI couldn’t blame him for being cold with me during the call. My call was probably the last thing he wanted to receive, but when I found out what had happened to Irina’s baby, I couldn’t call.It was almost automatic: I overheard Thomas talking on the phone while I was finishing dinner before going to the hospital to see Hanna and Blake. It didn’t take me long to notice Thomas’s furrowed brow and the abrupt way he stood up from his chair, as if the conversation were important. I knew Thomas was talking to Jake because I heard his voice, but since my illness interfered with my powers, I couldn’t understand what was happening.I stayed seated at the table, waiting for Thomas to come back. It didn’t take long for him to sit back down in front of me, though I know he had another call with someone else. I think he was talking to the pack.“What happened? Is everything okay?” I asked, thinking about what had happened between Jake and me just a few hours earlier.Eating in front of Tho

Jake“Why did you call me?” I asked as soon as I answered the phone.I hadn’t slept well in days because of everything going on with Kiara. Everything irritated me. The distant beeping of the machines, people walking through the hallways, and the pain of those who lost loved ones there. It was a constant reminder that life was so harsh that sometimes it didn’t let you rest. The pressure of knowing that my future no longer included three children affected me more than I expected. I loved that child more than I ever thought I would. Again, I never wanted to be a father, but fatherhood did change me.“Jake…” she said on the other end. “I needed to tell you something. I don’t want to interfere or upset you.”Her voice sounded strange. Not nervous. Not rushed. Heavy. And that was what finally made me uneasy.“What’s going on?” I insisted. “Just tell me already.”I ran a hand through my hair and stood up from the chair. I had no patience for her hesitation and fear of speaking. I started

Jake Judging by the doctor’s expression, I knew worse news was coming.I looked at him with my heart shattered. Kiara and I had fought so hard not to lose our children, and now Irina had lost the only child we had together. I didn’t know if she was aware of the news yet, but I could imagine how devastating it would be for her to find out.“What is it? What’s going on?”“Irina’s pregnancy…” he said, shaking his head regretfully. “It wasn’t a common loss.”“What? What do you mean?”“Based on the tone of her skin and her mucous membranes, I realized it was important to run a blood test quickly to confirm what I suspected, but the results showed something that feels excessively cruel.”“Tell me,” I demanded.“She was poisoned with silver. Just a few drops, but enough to make her lose the baby. Her blood was completely poisoned.”My world stopped. My heart began to race so violently that I didn’t know how to react. I thought I was going to die right there. My body trembled.I stumbled bac

Jake What happened hadn’t been an impulsive mistake; it had been a truth I carried inside me, one my heart constantly asked me to uncover instead of cowardly hiding it. But accepting that truth and kissing Kiara brought another kind of inner chaos with it.I parked in front of the house and stayed inside the car for a few seconds, breathing deeply. I thought about Irina and how I was going to look her in the eye, knowing I had failed her once again. I thought about the deal with Kiara, about giving her time, about not pressuring her. I had told her she could choose, that I wouldn’t force anything. But fear was eating me alive: I felt she wasn’t going to choose me. Thomas was stable; he was there, he was right. I was in chaos.I went inside and left the keys on the table. The silence in the house felt strange, too still. I took two more steps, and then I heard her voice, broken, calling for help from the hallway.“Jake…” she said. “Jake, please.”My heart raced. I ran and found her le
