Seven months later, I’m still thinking about how much everything has changed.
It’s been seven months since I last heard from Kiara. The last time I saw her was when I rejected her.
I remember how her legs buckled from the pain after the rejection. The psychological pain I caused her had struck deep. Her back, her long brown hair, the sound of her heels hitting the floor, and the sweet scent of her perfume were the last things I recorded of her in my mind.
When I saw her leave, determined and firm, I felt a sharp pain in my chest. A pain I never thought I would feel after letting her go, after learning she had cheated on me with my brother, Thomas.
There had been so much hatred inside me when Irina told me the truth, with proof. I had to make a decision and separate from Kiara. She betrayed me. I trusted her, and she stabbed me in the back.
With my own brother? How could she do that to me?
I’ve barely had any contact with Thomas. The only time we spoke was three months ago, when we had to meet virtually for a business matter. I had no choice. Since then, we haven’t exchanged a single word.
However, our mother organized a family dinner. She had just recovered from cancer that almost killed her, and she wanted her two sons to sit together at the table. I refused at first, but she was persistent, and I had to agree.
“You came!” she said, hugging me. She placed a sweet kiss on my cheek. I had to bend down so she could reach.
“How are you, Mom?” I smiled back, though I felt uncomfortable.
I just wanted the night to be over as soon as possible.
Mom glanced at Irina and offered a polite smile, but I knew what she truly thought about her. When she found out Kiara and I had separated, the news hit her hard. She never liked Irina for me.
“I’m fine. Come in... Dinner will be ready soon,” she said.
I walked in slowly, taking in the house. I had grown up here, but with Thomas around, it didn’t feel as warm as it used to. I reached the dining room, the delicious smell of food drifting from the kitchen. Thomas wasn’t there yet.
“Hasn’t he arrived?” I turned to my mother.
“Thomas? No. He’s coming with his new girlfriend.”
Irina took my hand as soon as I sat down at the table. Mom sat at the head, in Dad’s old seat.
“What are your plans for your relationship?”
“To get married, Mom. I told you a month ago. We’re planning to start a family.”
“Yes, ma’am. I love your son very much,” Irina said with her dazzling smile.
But Mom showed no real emotion about our engagement.
The doorbell rang. Mom quickly got up to open it herself. My body tensed instantly at the sound. Thomas was here, and I didn’t want to see his stupid face after what he’d done to me.
“Are you okay?” Irina asked.
“I don’t want to see him, Irina.”
“I thought you’d gotten over Kiara. I thought you didn’t love her anymore, Jake.”
“I don’t love her. I’m over it. But that doesn’t change the fact that I hate him.”
Thomas entered the kitchen, looking as imposing as ever. Our eyes met immediately, a silent challenge sparking between us. The rivalry thickened the air. Thomas looked surprised to see me there.
“What are you doing here?” he asked, turning toward Mom.
But Mom wasn’t behind him. It was Kiara.
My heart stopped when I saw her. As stunning and graceful as ever, with those eyes that could pierce right through your chest. But it wasn’t just seeing her beauty againit , was the sight of her rounded, swollen belly.
She was pregnant.
Kiara was pregnant.
“What is she doing here?” Irina asked, rising from her seat.
Kiara looked just as shocked to see me, but her face also showed fear. Instinctively, her hands went to her belly, caressing it as if she were protecting whatever was inside her.
“You… you’re pregnant?” I frowned.
I looked at Thomas, who quickly took Kiara’s hand and stepped in front of her to block my view. I felt my blood boil.
Mom had said Thomas would bring his girlfriend. Was she the girlfriend? Kiara?
Then, this scene proved that Irina had never lied. Irina had told the truth about Thomas and Kiara. They had been together all along.
“So this is why you brought me here, Mom? To see that Thomas is with Kiara?” I snapped.
“Sweetheart, I had no idea about this. I just found out like you did.”
I felt heaviness pressing on my head and chest. A strange, sharp feeling crept down my spine and spread through me.
“Whose baby is that?” I blurted out without even thinking.
ThomasThe apartment was far too quiet when we arrived.I had imagined being here differently—imagined a small place filled with life, with Kiara moving around, with the babies crying, making noise, filling every corner with something real. I had pictured chaos, warmth, interruptions… a life. But there was nothing.Only silence. Not the kind of silence you look for when you need to rest or think. Not the kind that comforts you. This was a hollow silence—heavy, uncomfortable. It crept into every corner, echoing inside my head, pressing against my chest. Since the moment we walked in, I hadn’t been able to get used to it.The absence of everything was unbearable. The walls felt narrower somehow. The air was different. There was no constant movement, no voices in the background, no footsteps echoing down a hallway. No presence of others, even in quiet moments.Just emptiness.I dropped my backpack near the couch and stood there for a few seconds, not really knowing what to do next.I had

ThomasI never thought loving someone could hurt this much until I met Kiara.I always knew she hadn’t fully forgotten Jake. That truth had always lingered somewhere in the back of my mind, like a shadow I chose to ignore. But I never believed it would come to this. I told myself that if it ever did—if one day she chose him over me—I would be mature enough to understand it. I convinced myself I was prepared. After everything I had been through—the gunshot, the hospital, the constant feeling of standing on the edge between life and death, fighting for just one more day—I thought nothing could hit me harder than that. I thought I had already endured the worst kind of pain a person could feel.I was wrong. This… this was worse. Far worse than the bullet that had torn through my body. That pain had been physical, sharp, immediate—but it had an end. It could be numbed, treated, healed. What I felt now was something entirely different. This pain didn’t have a clear source I could touch or r
KiaraI stayed a few more minutes in the room with the children, rocking the baby until her breathing became calm again. Ada loved her mom, and that made me happy. They were the only ones who could bring a smile to my face in that moment. Blake had calmed down, too, barely moving in his crib, unaware of everything happening in the living room. At least that was something. I preferred that they never felt a situation this tense again. When I was sure they wouldn’t wake up again, I carefully stood and left the room, closing the door softly so I wouldn’t make any noise.I didn’t really want to go out. I didn’t want to step back into the chaos, but I couldn’t use my children as a refuge either. I had to face what was happening. Jake was down there alone with his mother, dealing with a situation I was also largely responsible for.Jake stood in the middle of the room, looking toward the stairs, watching his mother come down.I followed his gaze.Juliette walked to the door, holding a suitc
KiaraThomas had finally left the house, no matter how hard I tried to stop him. I tried to convince him, but it was useless. He had already made his decision. I stood there staring at the door for a while, hoping he would change his mind, as if I expected it to open again, as if at any moment Thomas would come back and somehow everything could return to normal. It didn’t happen, of course. The silence left behind in the house was louder than the noise of the party and the shouting from earlier. It was incredible how everything suddenly felt so dead.I felt Juliette’s presence before she spoke. I didn’t have to turn around to know she was there, standing, staring at the door her son had just walked out of. She was crying, afraid that something might happen to Thomas.“Excellent. Are you happy now?” she asked. She didn’t shout. She didn’t raise her voice. But she looked at us with resentment.I slowly turned. Jake stood a few steps behind me, his body tense, as if he already expected h
KiaraI heard footsteps on the stairs before I saw him, and I knew it was Thomas coming down. There was no mistaking his steps. He looked completely determined to leave, and I knew I had to act fast if I wanted to convince him to stay at least one more night.Where was he going in the middle of the night? Where could he go on his own?I looked up.He was coming down with a backpack slung over his shoulder and two more in his hands. He wasn’t carrying much, but enough that he wouldn’t have to come back.“Thomas…” I said softly. He didn’t respond. He kept walking down, not looking at me, his gaze fixed on the last step.Jake stood beside me, still, his arms tense, watching everything without interfering, and I was grateful he didn’t step in.I took a step forward.“Thomas, wait.”He didn’t look at me.When he reached the last step, he finally lifted his gaze. His eyes passed over me for barely a second before shifting to the door. God… he was really going to leave. He wasn’t bluffing.T
JakeThe first thing I did when I woke up was think of Kiara, of her terrified eyes watching me bleed out.The fast memory of what happened crossed my mind like the bullet through my chest. I felt the pain spread through my body as a reminder that I had almost been killed. I didn’t even know how it
JakeI woke up suddenly, scared, as if I were in the middle of a war again. My eyelids burned the moment they opened and the white hospital light was too intense for my tired eyes. Everything looked blurry, slow, as if my thoughts took too long to reach me, and weakness kept taking over my body and
KiaraThe hours at the hospital felt eternal and exhausting. Waiting and dealing with uncertainty weren’t working for me. Waiting for news and remembering what happened was all our brains could think about and constantly relive. I was exhausted, with my emotions raw and exposed. That was exactly ho
KiaraThe sound of the gunshots left me deafened and dazed. It was as if everything in my life had stopped. I saw my life and my children’s lives flash before my eyes. But the first shot was so terrifying that I almost fainted. When everything started, the first thing I could do was cover my head,
