Amy looked at me, confused and amazed. I never brought men home.
"God, I'm sorry, I'm leaving now," she stammered and started to leave.
Before I could stop her and explain, Raven intervened. He wore a conspiratorial smile as he turned to Amy.
"We have a witness to our engagement. That's wonderful," he said.
Amy's eyes darted between Raven and me, her brows furrowing in bewilderment. I couldn't resist playing along, so I flashed a mischievous smile and decided to join in on Raven's joke.
"I got engaged!" I declared, feigning excitement as I showed off the ring on my finger.
The shock on Amy's face was evident as she dropped her keys in disbelief. She struggled to process the unexpected revelation, her gaze alternating between my face and the ring.
"You did what, Eve?" she exclaimed, her voice filled with astonishment.
Raven and I burst into laughter. His contagious laughter made it difficult to keep a straight face.
"We're just joking, Amy," I finally managed to say through my laughter.
But Raven's expression turned serious, and he countered, "I'm dead serious, though."
I rolled my eyes, thinking he was taking the joke too far. "Oh, stop with this already," I sighed.
Raven's smile remained unwavering as he continued, "No, really. I have to repay your kindness."
I raised an eyebrow, not entirely sure where he was going with this. "Okay, then buy me dinner or something else, but don't marry me, you psycho."
His charming smile persisted as he replied, "So you'll go out with me?"
I shook my head, dismissing his proposition. "I gave that as an example, not as a dare."
I took a deep breath, realizing that I hadn't properly introduced Raven to Amy. I gestured towards Raven and spoke, "First, Amy, this is Raven. Raven, meet Amy."
They shook hands, Amy's smile shy and uncertain as she tried to make sense of the situation. She was looking at me hoping to tell her what was going on.
"Raven wasn't feeling well, so I brought him home, and now he's leaving, right?" I explained quickly.
"Why are you acting like this, fiancée?" he frowned.
"Did you fall as a baby? For the last time stop calling me that," I replied.
I was very tired of this and I wanted it to stop. Amy looked between the two of us, growing more perplexed by the second. "Eve, I'm really confused," she insisted, seeking an explanation.
Raven's smile widened. "Now I have a name for that beautiful face," he said, his tone sincere.
I let out an exasperated sigh. "Great," I muttered, not entirely sure how to navigate this.
Concern filled Amy's eyes as she turned to me. "Eve, do you need me to call the cops? Does he bother you?" she asked.
Raven's expression changed. I could tell he was getting frustrated. "I'm trying to give you something in exchange. Why can't you understand that? This whole situation is upsetting me. I'm here with the purest of intentions, and you're treating me like a criminal."
"Okay, Raven, I understand, but this isn't necessary," I said.
"Do you know what? I am leaving as you wish. But be sure that I will come back for you," he said.
"I really hope not," I responded.
He locked eyes with me, and for a brief moment, I saw a flicker of disappointment in his gaze. Why did I care about his feelings?
Suddenly, Raven shifted the conversation, asking a seemingly innocent question that sent a wave of surprise crashing over me. "Can you at least tell me how I can get to the Sapphire Business Building?"
Amy and I exchanged bewildered glances, both sensing the significance of his words. What did he just say?
"Why are you going there?" I asked cautiously, a knot forming in my stomach.
"My company is opening a new mall in this building and I need to go see how the opening preparations are going in the morning," he replied matter-of-factly.
My heart sank as the realization struck me like a lightning bolt. The Sapphire Business Building, the building I had been meticulously planning and preparing for, was for Raven's company.
The magnitude of the situation hit me with full force, and a mix of shock, apprehension, and regret washed over me.
"Oh, you are my client," I uttered. At that moment, I became acutely aware of how I had treated Raven, and the consequences of my actions became crystal clear.
I couldn't afford to lose this job; it held immense importance for my professional portfolio.
"Is that so?" he asks, his voice laced with curiosity, causing my heart to skip a beat.
"I hope that my attitude tonight won't have any negative impact on the job we agreed on," I reply with a stupid smile.
"I don’t know, Eve,’’ he says my name so slowly, savoring each syllable, and for some inexplicable reason, it sends a shiver down my spine. "You really hurt me tonight. In fact, you were disrespectful to my cultural customs. I was genuinely willing to engage my soul with yours as a gesture of gratitude for your kindness, but now..." His voice trails off, leaving a lingering tension in the air.
"Please don’t punish me because of my big mouth. Amy has also put in a lot of effort for this project, and she did nothing wrong,’’ I implore, my eyes pleading for forgiveness.
He gazes at me and a small smile plays on his lips. "If you promise to seriously consider the engagement, I will allow your company to organize the event,’’ he finally offers, his tone softer.
"Okay, yes, sure, thank you," I stammered, my voice filled with relief. Overwhelmed with emotion, I impulsively throw my arms around him in a hug.
I have to start thinking before acting. For my luck, he finds it funny.
He chuckles lightly and gently disentangles himself from my grasp. "Take it easy, fiancée. Remember, you haven't officially said the big 'Yes' to me yet," he teases, a glimmer of mischief in his eyes.
"Sorry, I got carried away. Hey, I'm sending you the location of the building," I say, swiftly shifting the conversation to a more professional tone.
"The new mall, you say," Amy says, laughing nervously. She looks at me furtively and adds, "Aren't you in direct competition with the mall next door on the same street as the Sanderson Corporation?"
"Yeah, but it doesn't bother me," Raven replies distractedly.
My fingers freeze on the keyboard of Raven's phone. Raven's direct competitor is Ryan's company. My ex, whom I've been desperately trying to avoid since I stepped foot in town.
I exchanged a quick glance with Amy, we both looked horrified.
"Is everything alright?" Raven asks, snapping me back to the present moment.
"Yeah, yeah, just wondering about the address," I hastily reply, desperately trying to mask my inner turmoil.
"Okay, well I guess I'll see you tomorrow?" he says, smiling warmly at me, unaware of the storm brewing within me.
"Of course," I manage to utter, my voice filled with horror and disbelief. "Until tomorrow morning."
After closing the door, I sat on the floor. Amy mirrored my unease.
"Amy, this project is significant, and it's right in the middle of Ryan's territory. I've been avoiding him for years, and now..."
Amy placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. "Eve, you're an amazing event planner. You can handle this. Besides, it's just business. Keep it professional, and everything will be fine."
"With Ryan, things never end easily. He will take it personally, and it will get ugly. You saw how he treated me. What if he does it again?"
"Calm down, we can cancel the job if you want," Amy gently crouched next to me.
I thought for a moment. My heart skipped a beat, and a fear of the past was creeping into me, but I was more determined than ever. I wouldn't let Ryan scare me, even years from now.
"No, we won't. We're going to put on such a good event that Ryan won't stand a chance."
Ryan’s POV: I observed the rookies as they practiced. I had taken it upon myself to participate in the training of our future pack soldiers after several months of unprovoked attacks from other werewolves. "Is that what you call running?" I bellowed. "I want you to sprint from one end of the gym to the other in under 5 seconds." The rookies hastened their pace, but they still fell short. My mood was foul, and I found myself venting my frustration on them. One of them stumbled and tumbled to the ground. I strode over to him, gripping the collar of his uniform, and forced him to face me. "What's your name?" I growled. "Cody, Alpha," he replied, his voice trembling. "Can you explain to me why you keep tripping over your own feet, Cody?" I questioned, my tone deceptively calm but laced with an unmistakable threat. "I'm sorry, sir," he stammered. "I don't want your apology; I want an explanation," I snapped. "I'll try harder..." he murmurs. Without warning, I shoved him down and
Eve’s POV: I gazed at my reflection in the mirror, my fingers smoothing out an errant strand of hair. My nerves were jangling like a piano wire, each note a discordant reminder of the choice I was about to make. Working with Raven meant trouble for Ryan, my ex-mate. Although I shouldn't have cared about his feelings after everything he put me through, a nagging voice in the back of my mind whispered "traitor." Back when I was part of the pack, I had been deeply involved in Ryan's business endeavors. Walking away from it now meant abandoning years of hard work and starting from scratch. I knew if Ryan ever found out, he'd see it as yet another betrayal. Thankfully, Ryan rarely visited the city, even when I was still part of the pack. I wasn't going to let him take this opportunity away from me. I needed this fresh start, this chance to be in control of my own destiny. I'd pledged my loyalty to Ryan as his mate, but he'd cast me out and break our bond. That pledge was no longer bind
Ryan’s POV: I stormed out of the glass door, my frustration nearly causing me to shatter it. I couldn't care less about Raven's new mall; he was just another competitor in the crowded market, and I was prepared to crush him like the others. My initial plan had been to intimidate him a bit, but everything fell apart the moment I laid eyes on her. I caught a whiff of her scent, a mix of summer and flowers, but I told myself it was a figment of my imagination. Then our eyes met, and I lost control. I despised getting so emotionally entangled with my competition, but seeing Eve was the last thing I expected. It felt like a dagger through my heart. Her and my rival—could it get any worse? I walked the streets aimlessly, my nerves on edge. The connection between us, the bond, had been awakened when I touched her, and the pain that radiated from it froze me in my tracks. I could sense everything—her fear, her grief, her pain. It was overwhelming, to the point of madness. She had betrayed
Eve’s POV: I sat frozen, like a stuffed animal, unable to gather my wits or find the strength to move a muscle. Seeing Ryan sitting on my doorstep was beyond comprehension. I blinked several times, trying to process the surreal sight before me. He looked angry, his breathing heavy and his eyes darting restlessly across my face. I opened my mouth to speak, but no words escaped my lips. Similarly, he remained silent, and we simply locked eyes, exchanging a wordless intensity. In the next instant, the impulse to retreat surged through me, urging me to run back into the safety of my house. But before I could react, Ryan grabbed me and pulled me into a tight embrace. At first, I felt numb, almost detached from the warmth enveloping me, but the reality of the situation quickly resurfaced, and I started to struggle against his hold. Yet, he only tightened his arms around me, refusing to let go. "What's wrong with you?" I screamed. I thrashed in his grip, desperate to break free. "How do
Eve’s POV: In the morning, I didn't allow myself to dwell on yesterday's events. I adjusted quickly, grabbing breakfast on the way and now finishing my coffee at Raven's Mall. I had decided to take some time before our meeting to jot down additional notes and details that I hadn't had the chance to cover yesterday. Amy was at the bakery, busy running errands for the upcoming event. With the mall expected to be filled with people, she would need at least a few more days to ensure everything was perfectly in order. I was just wrapping up an email detailing a decoration order with an agency I was collaborating with when three imposing men in uniform approached me. "Miss, we must ask you to leave the building," one of them stated firmly. I frowned, as I was nearly done with my work and didn't want to leave before completing everything. "Why?" I inquired. "It has been reported that there is a fire hazard, with some of the installations deemed unstable according to the person who signa
Ryan’s POV: My initial intent in coming to Eve's office was simply to taunt Raven. I wanted to remind him that he was encroaching on my territory by converting his property into a mall. However, as I watched the dynamics between Eve and Raven, a different kind of rage began to build within me. It was no longer just about territory; it was about the woman I considered mine. Raven, the son of the Alpha of the Grim Claw Pack, wasn't just taking over my territory; it seemed he had laid claim to my mate. The mere thought of it infuriated me, shit, I can't let this pass without a confrontation. I couldn't help but notice the sneaky eye contact between Eve and Raven when she gave him the heads-up about me trying to hinder the mall's opening. Their eyes were having a whole conversation that I couldn't freaking get. It kept bugging the hell out of me. My anger grew stronger as I recalled seeing Eve in Raven's building the previous day. She insisted it was all work-related, but if that were
Eve’s POV: I'm leaving the office immediately. It's a total disaster. I want to calm my nerves and talk to Amy. I'm sure she still will be at the cozy bakery down the street. When we started working, we intentionally arranged our offices next to each other. Amy is an extraordinary chef who crafts the most unique and delectable desserts for our customers. Her culinary expertise has played a significant role in the success of our business. I'm almost at the door, feeling the weight of the chaotic day when someone firmly grasps my arm. "Eve, we need to talk," Ryan says with urgency. "What do you want now?" I respond gruffly, attempting to conceal the flood of emotions surging through me. "I want you to come back," he says breathlessly, his words catching me off guard. "What?" I almost squealed in amazement, unable to process his sudden confession. "Hear me out. I want you to come back to me, to our pack. I'm ready to forgive you for everything," he pleads. "Forgive me?" I erupt wi
Ryan’s POV: I watched her as she walked away, taking in every detail of her beautiful body. Her taste still lingers on my lips, sweet and mesmerizing. The memory of her presence captivates me, leaving me longing for more. She could talk all she wanted, but I could feel the way her body responded to my touch. She still belongs to me. My inner wolf persistently fought to connect with me, its howls echoing in my mind. "Go after her. Don't let her slip away," it urged, yelling at me the moment I let it take control. "Patience, my friend," I tried to calm it down. "Don't let her leave us again." "Stop trying to control me," I snapped back, growing angry. "And for the record, it was you who compelled me to kiss her, wasn't it?" "If I relied on you and your pride, you wouldn't even speak to her," he retorted. "I miss her wolf, and deep down, you miss her too, no matter how much you deny it." "Enough with the games," I scolded. "You're only confusing things. I've been acting foolishly
