The healer’s cottage suddenly felt too small.

I sat on the wooden stool Maren had pushed toward me, my hands gripping my knees to keep them from shaking. Caleb stood behind me, one hand resting on my shoulder—not restraining, just anchoring. Through the bond, I felt his controlled fury, his need to have something solid to fight. But there was nothing to fight yet. Only words. Only truth, five years too late.

“Tell me everything,” I said. “From the beginning.”

Maren lowered herself into the chai

“I'm the one they took before you were born.”The voice came from beneath the broken street.I couldn't move.Silas stood beside Caleb, his small hand locked around his father's fingers. Yet the voice below sounded exactly like him.Not similar.Exactly.“Mother,” it called again. “Why did you leave me here?”My heart slammed against my ribs.“I never had another child.”The words came out before I could stop them.Tobin turned toward me.“Don't answer it.”“But it knows my voice.”“It knows what will make you listen.”The darkness beneath the cradle shifted.A pale hand appeared between the stones.Lira screamed and buried her face against my side.Caleb drew her behind him, keeping Silas close.“Everyone back,” he ordered.Draven tried to stand, but his legs gave way. The black mark on his throat pulsed, and he clutched it with both hands.“It's happening again,” he gasped.“What is?” Caleb demanded.“The voices. They start by calling someone they love. Then they make you believe yo

“They have found the second Witness.”Maelin's words hung over us.I looked at Silas. He stood beside Caleb, gripping his father's hand with both of his. Lira had moved behind me, her small fingers clutching the back of my coat.“What does that mean?” I demanded.Maelin looked at the parchment.“Your son carries something the first Witness carried. I don't know how much of it has awakened, but the Gate recognizes him.”“Then it can recognize him from a distance. It doesn't get to have him.”“Aria—”“No. You have already made enough decisions about my family.”Caleb folded the parchment and placed it inside his coat.“We need to get the children away from this street.”Tobin shook his head.“That may not help. The Gate has already spoken his name.”“Then tell us how to stop it,” Caleb said.Tobin's blind eyes turned toward the crack.“The Gate does not simply call people. It follows the connection it recognizes. If Silas responds to it, even unknowingly, he could become a passage.”I p

  • UNBROKEN : THE ROGUE LUNA    CHAPTER 96 — THE HANDS THAT OPEN THE GATE

The silence beneath Velmora frightened me more than the laughter had.Whatever lived below the city had stopped laughing the moment the silver lines appeared across my palms.I stared at them, unable to understand what I was seeing. The markings were delicate, almost beautiful. They began at the base of my fingers and crossed my skin in branching patterns, meeting at the center of each palm.Caleb held my wrist carefully.“Does it hurt?”“No.”But I could feel something moving beneath the marks. Not pain.Recognition.Tobin remained frozen beside the pale cradle.“The first Witness never carried the Gate's power in her name,” he repeated. “She carried it in her hands.”I looked at him.“What does that mean?”“It means the Witness was never simply someone who could hear names. She could touch the boundary between worlds and decide what crossed it.”“And the Keeper?”“Anchored the boundary. The Witness controlled its passage.”Caleb glanced at the blue markings spreading along his arm.

  • UNBROKEN : THE ROGUE LUNA    CHAPTER 95 — THE NAME I WAS NEVER GIVEN

The name hung over the broken street.Aelira.The moment I heard it, something shifted inside me.It wasn't like remembering a forgotten childhood or recognizing a familiar face. It felt like a key sliding into a lock that had been waiting for me all my life. For one breath, the darkness beneath Velmora disappeared.I saw a woman standing beyond the crack in the earth. She had my face, my height, even the same shape of mouth. But her eyes were silver, and old scars covered both her hands. She stared at me as if she had been waiting for this moment longer than I could understand. Then she vanished.I stumbled backward.“Maelin.”My grandmother stood beside the pale stones, her red cloak stirring in the unnatural wind.“Tell me what that name means.”Her eyes moved from me to the darkness beneath the street.“Aelira was the name recorded in the oldest surviving account of the first Witness.”“Then why have I never heard it?”“Because a name written in an ancient record does not automati

  • UNBROKEN : THE ROGUE LUNA    CHAPTER 94 — THE SHACKLE'S TRUE PRICE

The Shackle did not attack immediately. Its soldiers appeared at the ends of Velmora's white streets, emerging from narrow archways and beneath ancient stone bridges. They carried red lanterns that burned without smoke, and black bands circled their wrists. Their formation was precise, their movements disciplined. They weren't lost. They had come prepared.A man in a long black coat walked ahead of them, his hands clasped behind his back. A silver chain hung from his collar, ending in the Shackle's bleeding-star symbol. He stopped when he saw Maelin. Then he smiled."Grandmother."The word sounded like an insult.Maelin's expression hardened. "Veyr."The man tilted his head, studying her silver hair and red cloak."You have been difficult to find. I almost began to think the stories were exaggerated."I stepped forward, putting myself between him and my family."Who are you?"His eyes settled on me."Commander Veyr. Senior officer of the Shackle, keeper of its oldest records, and the

  • UNBROKEN : THE ROGUE LUNA    Chapter 93: The Man with Caleb’s Face

The figure stepped into the street. It wore Caleb’s face, but nothing else about it belonged to him. Its eyes were empty—smooth black, without silver or reflection—and its steps were too precise, each foot placed exactly where the frozen stones seemed to expect it.A dark line circled its throat like a chain.Caleb moved in front of me. “Everyone stay back.”The echo stopped beneath a dead lantern. Its mouth curved into Caleb’s familiar smile, made cruel by the empty eyes.“You still believe the mark makes you the Keeper,” it said.Caleb’s hand tightened around his blade. “What are you?”“The shape the Gate remembers.” The echo tilted its head. “Not your twin. Not a living man. A memory given form when you touched the threshold.”My gaze snapped to Caleb’s bare hand. The blue mark glowed faintly beneath his skin.Maelin stepped between the echo and the rest of us. “It cannot cross the city’s outer boundary. If it reaches the living world, the Gate will recognize every Keeper descendan
