Chapter 1

The Scent of Pine and Ashes

keep your head down. Don’t look them in the eye. Don’t make a sound.

These were the three rules that had kept me alive in the Blackwood Packhouse for the last six years.

I wiped the sweat from my forehead, my hands trembling as I balanced a heavy silver tray loaded with crystal glasses of whiskey. The Grand Hall was deafening. Tonight, our pack was hosting Alpha Caleb Vance of the Shadow Pack. He was a myth in our world—a monster in a tailored suit, a man who had slaughtered his own uncle to claim his throne at just nineteen.

"Move it, Omega," my stepsister, Chelsea, hissed as she brushed past me. She was wearing a crimson silk dress that clung to her curves, her scent of cheap vanilla flared to attract the visiting Alpha. "If you ruin tonight for me, I’ll make sure father locks you in the silver-lined cell for a week."

I swallowed the lump of fear in my throat and nodded. "Yes, Chelsea."

I stepped into the grand ballroom. The air was thick with the suffocating scents of hundreds of high-ranking wolves—perfume, cologne, and sweat. But suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the hall swung open.

A sudden, crushing silence fell over the room.

The temperature seemed to drop ten degrees. I pressed myself against the marble pillar near the back of the room, trying to blend into the shadows.

Alpha Caleb Vance had entered.

He was taller than the rumors suggested, broad-shouldered, and draped in an aura of pure, unadulterated power. His dark hair was swept back, and his sharp jawline was shadowed with stubble. He didn’t wear a suit like the other Alphas; he wore a dark leather jacket and dark jeans, looking more like a mercenary than royalty.

As he walked, the crowd parted like the Red Sea. My own Alpha, Beta, and Gamma bowed their heads in submission. A shiver ran down my spine. This man wasn't just an Alpha; he was a predator among predators.

"Alpha Caleb," my step-father, Alpha Richard, greeted him, his voice tight with forced warmth. "Welcome to Blackwood."

Caleb didn't answer immediately. He simply scanned the room with icy gray eyes. His gaze was cold, empty, and completely disinterested. "Let’s get the treaty signed, Richard. I don’t have time for your theatrics."

His voice was a deep, gravelly baritone that vibrated right through the soles of my shoes.

My heart began to hammer against my ribs. *Just stay quiet,* I told myself. *Ten more minutes, and you can slip away to your basement room.*

Alpha Richard gestured to the serving staff. "Of course. Drinks first."

Chelsea immediately stepped forward, offering her most dazzling smile as she held out a glass. Caleb didn't even look at her. He bypassed her completely, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the room.

Then, his head snapped.

His eyes locked onto the dark corner where I was standing.

My breath hitched. *No. No, please.*

Suddenly, a bizarre sensation bloomed in my chest. It felt like an electric wire had been snapped, sending a jolt of pure fire straight to my womb. My wolf, who had been dormant and silent for years due to the suppressants I took, suddenly howled in my mind.

*MATE!* she roared.

The tray in my hands began to wobble. The scent hit me a second later. It cut through the suffocating perfumes of the ballroom—a scent of crisp winter pine, ozone, and burning embers. It was intoxicating. It was dangerous.

Caleb’s eyes dilated. The icy gray vanished, replaced by a bottomless, pitch-black void. His wolf was at the surface.

"Caleb?" Alpha Richard asked, noticing the shift in the terrifying man’s posture.

Caleb didn't hear him. He took a step toward me. Then another. His movements were slow, predatory, and entirely focused on me.

Panic seized me. I was an Omega. I was a fugitive in my own pack. If he claimed me, he would discover what I was. He would discover my bloodline, and Alpha Richard would kill me before I ever left this territory.

I took a step back, my heel catching on the edge of the heavy velvet curtains.

*Clatter!*

The silver tray slipped from my fingers. The crystal glasses shattered against the marble floor, splashing amber liquid across the pristine white stone.

The sound was like a gunshot in the silent room.

"You clumsy bitch!" Chelsea shrieked, breaking the spell. She lunged forward, raising her hand to slap me across the face. "How dare you—"

Before her hand could make contact, a roar echoed through the hall. It was a sound so dark, so violently powerful, that several Omegas in the room dropped to their knees, whimpering.

A hand shot out, catching Chelsea’s wrist mid-air.

It was Caleb.

He didn't look at Chelsea. His grip on her wrist was so tight I heard the faint *pop* of her bones shifting. She let out a cry of agony.

Caleb’s eyes were fixed entirely on me. His chest rose and fall in heavy, ragged pants, as if he were trying to inhale every single molecule of my scent.

"Touch her," Caleb growled, his voice laced with an Alpha command that forced everyone in the room to bow their heads, "and I will tear your packhouse down with you inside it."

He threw Chelsea’s hand away like she was trash and took the final step toward me.

I backed up until my spine hit the cold marble pillar. I was trapped.

He loomed over me, his massive frame blocking out the light of the chandeliers. Slowly, he reached out, his large, calloused hand cupping my jaw. The moment his skin touched mine, sparks of golden electricity exploded across my flesh. I gasped, my eyes flying open.

Caleb’s thumb brushed over my lower lip. A dark, possessive smirk played on his lips, though his eyes remained wild.

"I found you," he whispered.
