Boss's Wife: Part 1

The invitation came on a Thursday afternoon.

Mr. Langford stopped by my desk just before five, suit jacket already on, and set a thick folder down beside my keyboard. “The Henderson numbers look solid. Good work.” He paused, then added, “We’re having a small dinner at the house tomorrow night. Just a few people from the team. You’re welcome to join us if you’re free.”

I looked up. In eight months at the firm I had never been invited anywhere near his home. Most junior analysts weren’t.

“I’d like that,” I said. “Thank you.”

He nodded once. “Seven-thirty. I’ll have my assistant send the address.”

The email arrived twenty minutes later. A quiet street in the older part of the city, the kind of place with high hedges and long driveways. I spent Friday oscillating between focusing on work and wondering why the hell I had been included.

At seven-fifteen I parked at the curb and walked up the stone path. The house was large but not showy—dark brick, warm light in the windows, the low sound of conversation already drifting out when the front door opened.

Mrs. Langford answered.

I had seen her twice before, both times at firm holiday parties. Mid-thirties, dark hair always pulled back in a clean twist, the kind of controlled beauty that made people straighten their posture without thinking. Tonight she wore a simple black dress that followed the lines of her body without trying too hard. No jewelry except small gold earrings. She smiled like she had been expecting me specifically.

“You must be Ethan. Come in. Everyone’s in the living room.”

Her voice was lower than I remembered. She stepped aside to let me pass and the light scent of her perfume followed me into the entryway. Mr. Langford appeared from the direction of the kitchen with a drink in hand, clapped me once on the shoulder, and steered me toward the small group already gathered—two senior associates and their partners, one partner from the legal side. Ordinary firm talk. Performance reviews. A client who had finally signed.

I accepted a glass of red wine and tried to focus.

Mrs. Langford moved through the room with quiet efficiency, refilling glasses, laughing at the right moments, never lingering too long with any one person. Every so often her eyes met mine across the space and held for a fraction longer than polite conversation required. Each time, something warm and unwanted settled low in my stomach.

Dinner was served in the formal dining room. I was seated two chairs down from Mr. Langford and directly across from his wife. The conversation stayed professional—market trends, a competitor’s misstep, someone’s upcoming vacation. Mrs. Langford participated just enough to keep the flow going, but I felt the weight of her attention whenever the talk moved elsewhere.

At one point she reached for the wine bottle at the same time I did. Our fingers touched on the neck of the bottle. She didn’t pull back immediately. Her eyes lifted to mine and the corner of her mouth curved in something too private for the table.

“Allow me,” she said, and poured for both of us.

The rest of the meal passed in a haze of careful small talk and the growing awareness of her across the white tablecloth. When the plates were cleared she stood and suggested everyone move back to the living room for coffee. Mr. Langford’s phone rang as we rose. He glanced at the screen, excused himself, and stepped into the hallway toward his home office, already speaking in the low, clipped tone he used for important clients.

The others drifted toward the living room in a loose group. Mrs. Langford touched my elbow lightly as I passed.

“There’s a better bottle in the kitchen if you’d prefer something stronger,” she said. “I can show you.”

It was an ordinary offer. It didn’t feel ordinary.

I followed her out of the dining room and down the short hallway. The kitchen was modern and quiet, lit only by the under-cabinet lights. She opened a cabinet, took down two heavier glasses, and poured whiskey without asking whether I wanted it. When she handed me the glass her fingers brushed mine again, longer this time.

“You’re younger than the others he usually brings home,” she said.

“I noticed.”

“He speaks highly of your work. Says you don’t waste time on things that don’t matter.” She leaned against the counter, glass in hand, and studied me over the rim. The black dress shifted with the movement, the neckline dipping just enough to show the soft upper curve of her breasts. “Is that true?”

“I try to be direct.”

“Good.” She took a slow sip. “Direct is rare in this circle.”

The house felt larger and smaller at the same time. From the living room came the muffled sound of conversation and someone’s polite laughter. From the other direction, the closed door of Mr. Langford’s office and the low cadence of his call. Mrs. Langford’s eyes stayed on mine. The air between us carried the scent of her perfume and the sharper edge of the whiskey.

“You can go join the others,” she said. “Or you can stay here a minute and finish that drink with me.”

I stayed.

She smiled like she had expected the answer, then glanced toward the hallway that led back to the living room and the office beyond it.

“He’ll be on that call for a while,” she said quietly. “International client. They never keep it short.”

The implication settled between us, clear and dangerous. I drank. The whiskey burned in a way that felt useful. Mrs. Langford set her glass down, stepped closer, and reached past me for a second bottle on the counter behind my shoulder. The movement brought her body within inches of mine. The soft press of her breast against my arm lasted long enough to erase any remaining doubt about how intentional it was.

When she pulled back her eyes were darker.

“You’re staring,” she said.

“You’re hard not to stare at.”

The words left my mouth before I could stop them. For a second I thought I had crossed a line that would end the night immediately. Instead her mouth curved again, slower this time.

“Careful,” she murmured. “My husband is just down the hall.”

“I know.”

“And yet you’re still standing here looking at me like that.”

She didn’t step away. The kitchen lights hummed softly above us. Somewhere in the house a clock ticked. Mrs. Langford’s hand rested on the counter beside mine, close enough that I could have covered it with my own if I moved an inch.

She held my gaze and let the moment stretch until the silence itself felt like a decision.

Then she spoke, voice low enough that it couldn’t carry beyond the kitchen.

“There’s a guest bathroom at the end of the hall on the left. If you decide the living room conversation is too dull, you know where to find it.”

She picked up her glass, brushed past me close enough that her hip touched mine, and walked out of the kitchen without looking back.

I stood alone with the whiskey and the fading scent of her perfume, pulse heavy in my throat and lower, already knowing the living room was the last place I was going to go.

The wedding happened exactly as planned. I stood at the front in a fitted black suit and watched Lena walk the aisle on her father’s arm while the gathered guests rose and turned. She looked composed, beautiful, exactly the bride the photographs would remember. White dress, steady smile, eyes fixed on Chris as if the rented bedroom three nights earlier had never existed. I kept my own face carefully neutral. The best man’s expression. Supportive. Unremarkable. The vows were exchanged without tremor. Rings slid into place. The celebrant pronounced them married and the room erupted in the expected applause. I handed Chris the rings when the moment required it and stepped back into the line of groomsmen like a man with nothing private burning under his collar. The reception ran long. Speeches. Dancing. The usual rotation of relatives and friends offering congratulations. Lena moved through it all with practiced grace. Every so often her eyes found mine across the room—over the rim of

I waited the full five minutes before going downstairs. The bathroom at the end of the hall gave me cold water and a mirror that still showed too much. I looked like a man who had just fucked someone he shouldn’t have—color high, mouth slightly swollen, the residual heat of her still in my blood. I washed my hands twice, fixed my shirt, and forced my breathing level. The smell of her perfume clung faintly to my collar. I left it. Downstairs the party had resumed a thinner version of itself. The music was lower. Two of the groomsmen were back at the poker table with fresh drinks and carefully neutral faces. Chris stood near the kitchen island, phone in hand, the picture of a man trying to calculate damage control. When he saw me on the stairs he crossed the room immediately. “Where is she?” “She left. I walked her to her car. She said she needed to sleep it off and that you should call her tomorrow when both of you are sober.” Chris searched my face. For a second I thought the tru

The latch clicked shut and the room became its own closed world. Lena stayed on the edge of the bed, watching me. The muffled noise of the party downstairs filtered through the floor—laughter, a raised voice, the thump of bass from whatever playlist someone had restarted. Up here the air felt thicker. I remained near the door with my hand still on the knob, giving her one last chance to tell me to open it again. She didn’t. “You’re supposed to talk me down,” she said. “Tell me Chris is a good man who made a drunken mistake and that the photo doesn’t mean anything.” “Is that what you want to hear?” “No.” I crossed the room slowly and stopped in front of her. She had to tip her chin up to hold my eyes. The green dress had ridden slightly higher on her thighs when she sat. Her coat lay discarded beside her. Up close I could smell her perfume and the sharper edge of whatever she had been drinking before she drove here. “You asked if I’ve ever wanted something I wasn’t supposed to w

The bachelor party was supposed to stay at the rented house. We had the music low enough not to draw complaints, poker chips scattered across the long dining table, and enough whiskey on the counter to keep the night moving. Chris—the groom, my closest friend since college—was already two drinks past sentimental and talking about the vows he still hadn’t finished writing. The rest of the guys were loud in the way men get when the wedding is three days out and the last unsupervised night feels like it matters more than it should. I was in the kitchen pouring another round when the front door opened hard enough to hit the stopper. Lena stood in the entryway. She wore a black coat over a short dress, hair slightly messy, cheeks flushed. One look at her eyes told me she was drunk—not glassy, not stumbling, but sharp and angry in the way only certain kinds of drinking allowed. Conversation in the living room stuttered and died. Chris rose halfway from his chair. “Lena? What are you—”

The back gate was open the following Tuesday at 7:05. I saw it from my kitchen window—the wooden panel swung inward against the fence, a quiet invitation that needed no text. I finished the glass of water I had been holding, walked out my own back door, and crossed the narrow strip of grass that separated our yards. The gate closed behind me with a soft click. The patio door stood unlocked. I stepped into Claire’s kitchen like I had done it a dozen times already. She was waiting in the living room in nothing but one of her husband’s white button-down shirts, half the buttons left open. The hem hit mid-thigh. Her hair was down. When she saw me she didn’t bother with hello. “You’re late by five minutes.” “Had to make sure the street was clear.” “It’s always clear on Tuesdays.” She walked toward me, the shirt shifting with each step, and stopped close enough that I could see she wore nothing underneath. “I already locked the front. Gate stays open until you leave. House is ours unti

We didn’t move to the bedroom. Claire stayed under me on the couch for another few minutes, legs still loose around my hips, my come slowly leaking out of her onto the cushion. Her fingers traced idle lines along my back. The locked house felt suspended—no headlights in the driveway, no distant garage door, only the two of us and the quiet tick of the clock in the kitchen. “Again,” she said. I lifted my head. She was already looking at me with fresh heat in her eyes. I kissed her once, hard, then pulled out and stood. She watched me with open interest while I stayed naked in the middle of her living room, cock still half-hard and shiny from her. Claire sat up, wiped the mess between her thighs with her discarded tank top, and rose to her feet. “Kitchen,” she said. “I want the counter.” She walked ahead of me without bothering to pick up her clothes. The leggings and tank top stayed in a small pile on the couch. I followed the pale line of her bare back and the soft sway of her as
