Aria

Dante had said we could stay at the safe house for a couple of days before we had to move. It’s not like I was excited or anything, but as promised, I did get a new phone. One that came with many rules. I wasn’t allowed to call anyone from my old life. That wouldn’t be hard considering I didn’t have any friends. They said Lola was back from maternity leave, so she was running the library. At least some good news.

I really hope we can resolve this issue soon so I can get back to my real lif

DanteShe didn’t say anything at first, simply unfolding her arms and dropping them to her sides.“You can’t say that,” she whispered.“I know,” I replied.“I reached out,” she continued, and I was quiet, finally looking up at me. “You didn’t reply.”“I wanted to,” I said, leaning closer.Time stood still.Just both of us, no distractions, nothing to stop us.Then her eyes moved towards the ring on my finger, and suddenly it felt too heavy.Aria took a step back.“Have you found anything about the men that attacked the house?” she started, folding her arms across her chest again.“Not yet,” I replied. My mask slipped back in place.“Hmmm,” she hummed, thinking for a moment before asking, “How would this work?”“I don’t understand.”“Finding your wife is clearly your priority now, and I don’t intend to keep working for you forever.” Her voice was firm.“You think you are doing me any favors?” Surprise evident in my voice.“All this,” I paused, “is to keep you safe.”“I never asked you

DanteSilence. The tension in the room was palpable. No one dared to speak. For a second, everything else in the room disappeared. None of it mattered.Just her.She stood there in her uniform, like she belonged. She didn’t. Something dark settled in my chest. We got a tip that Lucia had been spotted on the southern coast, but just like every other lead, it was a dead end. It’s been two days of chasing a ghost and coming up empty. Two days of trying not to think about that night and how I almost broke my vows. Two days of trying not to think about her, but failing. When I arrived earlier, Greta had told me she was waiting in the library. I wanted to go check on her, see how she was doing, but the meeting with two of my capos needed to happen immediately, and business always came first. She wasn’t supposed to be on kitchen duties. I made it clear she shouldn't be involved in serving. But here she was.I forced myself not to look at her when she walked in. One look would give too much a

AriaIt’s been two days since I’ve been here, and those two days have been the worst. Alice has made it her life’s mission to make my life a living hell. No matter how much I try to avoid her, she always finds new and improved ways to torture me. Fortunately, the bruise on my face was starting to fade, the angry purple had been replaced with a dull yellow, but that was just about the only good thing going for me.Dante hadn’t replied to any of my messages. I figured he was busy or maybe he had more important things to do but that didn’t stop the annoyance I felt every time I checked my phone.I was almost done getting ready for the day when I heard a soft knock on the door.“Come in,” I called out.Gemma walks in fully dressed and slumps on the bed.I laughed. “It’s not even 8 yet and you seem already tired.”Gemma and I have grown real close in the last couple of days.“Ughhhh,” she groaned. “Everyone is so tense, since the Don is coming today apparently.”I froze. We hadn’t seen eac

AriaHis expression hardened for the first time that evening. He was silent, standing to pick up both our plates and place them in the sink.“I didn’t lie when you asked before.” I was surprised when he spoke.“I don’t know where she is, Aria. One morning she was there, the next morning she wasn’t.”Something about the way he said it made me believe he genuinely didn’t know.“That can’t be good for a Don.” I didn’t know when I said that.“No, it isn’t.” He was done with the dishes, so he turned around to face me, holding my gaze so I couldn’t look away. Dante stepped closer until he was trapping me in.Talk about déjà vu.“My turn to ask questions.” His voice was low, drawing me in.“I thought you didn’t have any questions.” My voice came out smaller than I intended, but he was so close.I could feel his breath on my face. And his scent… so familiar.“Just one. It’s only fair, princess.”“Okay, shoot.” I tried to act unaffected, when really I was swooning.Leaning closer until he was

At least some good news.I really hope we can resolve this issue soon so I can get back to my real life.Dante had barely spoken to me all day, just brooding in his room. I never understood his mood swings. One minute he’s all “let me protect you,” another minute he couldn’t be bothered about things I do.Maybe he was working. The sooner he figures out this mess, the better. But I was hungry, and I wasn’t about to try to make dinner.Mustering all the courage I had, I casually walked to the door of his room and knocked. At first, there was no answer, so I did it again.“Come in.” Even though I w

  • Under his protection    Chapter 11

Aria “You want me to what?!!!!!” I sounded borderline hysterical, but I didn’t care at this point. This morning I felt bad about bringing up the stuff about his wife, especially since I don’t know what’s going on between them, but now I just want to throw something at him.Adriano was the one who replied this time.“It will just be for a short period, at least till we find out who wants you dead.”This is ridiculous. We were still at the kitchen island after having breakfast, one which I almost ruined but Adriano salvaged. Dante was leaning against the wall, relaxed like he hadn’t just said something utterly insane. Adriano sat on one of the stools. He wasn’t his usual playful self, so I knew on some level they were serious.“We aren’t even sure the attack was for me.” At this point I was reaching, but it’s better than going through with this ridiculous idea.“We found a tracker on your phone.”I froze.“A tracker… wait, why would there be a tracker on my phone?”“We don’t know yet,
