Chapter 5

Author: Sweetie Moore
The woman in her early twenties stood in the middle of the crowd, smiling as she shook hands with one coworker after another.

Simply because she'd caught the attention of the big boss, even her supervisors were now bowing and scraping in front of her.

"Ms. Campbell, when are you and Mr. Cox getting married? Don't forget to invite us to the wedding!"

"Once you two tie the knot, you can have a baby next year. Poppy, you'll really have it all!"

...

Poppy's cheeks flushed as she turned toward Cameron, who smiled without saying anything. Yet that was enough for everyone to take it as an unspoken confirmation.

I couldn't help finding the whole spectacle ridiculous. Years ago, someone had noticed the unusual vibe between Cameron and me and started spreading rumors around the office.

Cameron had been furious enough to fire the employee responsible and issue a strict order forbidding anyone from gossiping about relationships in the office.

Yet after Poppy arrived, that ironclad rule had somehow disappeared. Apparently, Cameron hadn't hated office gossip after all; he'd simply hated hearing people gossip about us.

The moment I walked into the room, the celebration fell silent.

Everyone turned toward me with expressions ranging from contempt to barely concealed amusement, as though they were waiting to see what would happen to the secretary who had angered the big boss.

"Well, well. If it isn't Stephanie, the secretary who's supposedly quitting." Cameron's cold gaze swept over me before he glanced at the clock. "It's already eleven. You're two hours late, so I'm counting this as half a day of unexcused absence."

I knew he was deliberately making things difficult for me. I'd put up with him for ten years, and now I wasn't willing to spend another minute doing so.

I'd already made myself clear, but he was still determined to drag this out as though the entire world should revolve around him.

When I remained silent, his expression grew even darker.

"Didn't you say you weren't capable enough for this job? If you can't handle being a secretary anymore, I'll transfer you to the Facilities Department."

I had only claimed so because I needed an excuse to resign. After everything I'd done for the company, there was no way he could have forgotten how many deals I'd brought in or how much I'd contributed to the business.

Yet now, he was throwing my own words back at me. I knew he was trying to spite me. It was simply childish.

Poppy grabbed Cameron's arm and spoke with feigned concern. "Cameron, that's not fair. Stephanie is capable, and everyone knows how much she's done for the company."

Several employees exchanged uneasy looks. No one could deny that I'd practically given the company nine years of my life, but I had long since grown tired of these pointless battles.

I simply waved a hand. "There's no need for all this. Just sign the agreement."

Cameron froze, his mouth parting as though he was finally about to say something useful. But Poppy suddenly started sobbing, "Maybe they're right. I guess I'm not qualified for the position after all. I'll give the vice president position to Stephanie."

"You earned that position through your ability," Cameron reassured her. "I won't let anyone question it."

Turning back to me, he was still convinced that I was just throwing a tantrum.

"Go work in Facilities for now," he said, entitled. "Once the company goes public, you can stay home and enjoy yourself. I'll take care of you."

I almost laughed.

Was that his idea of taking care of me? Keeping me at home to have his children, raise them, handle the housework, and then come begging to him whenever I needed money?

In other words, he wanted a wife who would function as a free maid while he went on living his life.

What a joke!

I glanced at the time on my phone. "Sorry, but I have a flight to catch. Whatever else you have to say can wait."

I started toward the elevator, then stopped and looked back at him with a faint, almost triumphant smile. "Oh, I almost forgot. We don't have a future anymore."

Cameron led me into the storage room, where dozens of neatly wrapped gift boxes had been stacked from floor to ceiling. He picked up a brand-new pair of earrings and pressed them into my hand before eagerly opening the other boxes one by one, explaining which ones were the gifts he'd bought to make up for all the years he'd neglected me.I dropped the earrings, and the tiny pieces of jewelry rolled straight into the back of the cabinet."I had those custom-made for you." Cameron dropped to the floor in a panic, reaching into the narrow gap to fish them out.I shook my head. "Once something is lost, finding another one doesn't make it the same thing."He still refused to give up, reaching deeper into the gap until his hand came back covered in dust."I'll have another pair made. I'll make them the same as the original," he insisted.I was speechless. If I hadn't needed to finish the divorce, I wouldn't have bothered going through any of this with him.It was obvious what he was

"Stop dragging this out. I gave you nine years of my youth, and I'm exhausted."I pressed the pen into his hand, and Cameron's fingers trembled as he finally signed the agreement. He immediately turned his face away, trying to hide the tears in his eyes.Because of recent changes to the law, signing the divorce agreement wasn't enough to make the divorce official. We still had to go through a mandatory waiting period before it could be finalized. That was fine with me. I'd simply come back once the waiting period was over, sign the final paperwork, and be done with it.For the first time in years, I felt truly free, and I couldn't help smiling as I reached for the door. Cameron suddenly wrapped his arms around me from behind. "Don't push me away. Just let me hold you for a little longer."I let him hold me while his heavy breathing assailed my shoulder. Right then, a cab pulled up outside, and my mother stepped out, waving to me.Cameron followed me outside. "Mom..."It was th

Poppy panicked at the prospect of being transferred, and almost immediately, her asthma seemed to flare up again.Cameron instinctively reached out to steady her, but then he caught sight of me watching. He stopped himself and forced himself to sound indifferent."Her medication is in her bag. Get it for her.""We're getting divorced," I said smoothly. "You don't have to worry about appearances anymore."It turned out that he had known where the problem in our marriage lay all along; he simply hadn't cared enough to change anything because he'd been comfortable with things the way they were. The proud, self-assured man finally lowered his head and pleaded with me. "Stephanie, can you stay?"For a moment, I almost saw the boy he'd been ten years ago—the frightened teenager who'd been thrown out of his parents' house and had once leaned against my shoulder, showing his vulnerable side.I'd comforted him gently and promised that he could always rely on me. But somewhere during thos

"I'm taking it to my lawyer," Cameron stammered. "Who knows what kind of trap you might have set in here?"While he didn't love me, he refused to let me go, which left me with only one conclusion. He was simply trying to make things difficult for me."If you don't want to sign, that's fine. We can settle everything through the courts," I said, turning to leave.Cameron suddenly grabbed my hand, his eyes glistening. "Are you really going to be this heartless?"I yanked my hand free, ready to shoot back.Poppy hurried over and stepped in front of him, her face flushed with indignation."Cameron hasn't done anything to betray you. He's such a good man. How can you humiliate him in front of the entire company like this?"She stood protectively in front of him, then thoughtfully ushered the curious employees away."A good man? Fine. I'm giving him to you," I said evenly, tired of the back-and-forth.I turned to leave, but Cameron called after me. "Fine. We'll go to the courthouse a

Looking back, I found those things laughable. For years, I was too embarrassed to hang out with my friends. I was afraid that I couldn't afford my share of the bill.Yet they assumed that, after marrying a wealthy man, I was deliberately being stingy with them, and one by one, they stopped inviting me.I'd spent all those years struggling alongside Cameron, only to end up with nothing but an empty house and no one left beside me.After a long silence, Cameron reached into his wallet, pulled out a bank card, and held it out to me."I only made you split the expenses to cut unnecessary spending. I've never touched this money; it's all been sitting there," he explained with good faith. "If money is what this is about, you don't have to pay for anything anymore. I'll cover all of our living expenses from now on."He looked at me expectantly, as though the offer should have been enough to make me stay. But I pushed the card back. "There's no need to bring up the past."If money had e

"What are you going to do overseas?" Cameron asked, confused. He thought for a moment and added cautiously, "Are you planning to take a trip? If so, wait until things settle down here, and I'll go with you. Just stop making a fuss. The company is in a critical stage of growth, and I can't just walk away right now."For years, I'd wanted to travel with him and see more of the world. But every time, he'd poured cold water on the idea, asking what was so special about looking at scenery when we could spend that time landing more deals instead.Yet ever since Poppy came along, he'd been flying off with her every few days. Even now, the photos from their trips were still all over her social media, showing the two of them leaning against each other with bright, happy smiles. No wonder everyone at the company assumed they were a couple. Cameron was the only one still stubbornly insisting that they were nothing more than coworkers."No, thanks." I shook my head and handed him my resignati
