THIRTY FIVE

Diane stood in front of the mirror, a brush in her hand. She stared at her reflection in the mirror. Her sad, hooded eyes were expertly covered with mascara, eyeliner and fake lashes. Her cheeks were colored with fake blush to hide the sadness on her face.

She slowly raised her hand and touched her reflection in the mirror. The make-up on her face did nothing to hide the sadness of her eyes. She watched as two drops of tears fell from each of her eyes and rolled down her cheek.

The door opened and through the mirror, she saw Nicholas stepping inside the room. He closed the door gently behind him. “Diane,” he called, taking a step towards her.

She slowly turned around. “Hey,” she croaked, forcing out a small smile.

Nicholas walked towards her. “You are crying,” he stated.

She shook her head, raising her hand and touching her eyelid with a finger. “I’m not,” she said, her voice low and hoarse.
