Chapter 10

After Susan left, Zach stayed alone in the funeral home for a long time.

He put the phone away stiffly and wandered the streets without a destination in mind.

When his mind finally returned to the present, he found that he had arrived at the foot of a building. It was where his old house was.

He looked up. The familiar door was mottled.

He remembered that Ninian loved waiting for him to come home, but she was no longer going to show up.

Zach went in.

The construction workers were working inside.

The house was a mess, and he could no longer see any traces of them living there in the past.

The things they once had were put in a corner.

Among them were Ninian’s favorite lamp, the furniture they had picked together, and the cutlery they had used…

Zach’s eyes were full of sorrow. His eyes then landed on an oil painting stained with dirt.

Ninian had painted it for his eighteenth birthday.

It was snowing inside a building, and two young people were hugging in it.
