Deborahâs POV
I don't know what I was hoping for. Maybe I was hoping for the ground to open up and swallow me whole. Or maybe I was hoping I had confirmed that Caleb was alone before I baring my heart to him and telling him my secret. Or maybe I was hoping for Caleb to stand up for me and stop Olivia.
But as I looked at Caleb, then at Olivia, then at all the students that had gathered around me, pointing fingers at me and laughing at me, I felt my face wet. I touched my face and realised I was really shedding some tears and that gave Olivia all the satisfaction she needed.
Unable to stand there anymore, I ran out of Caleb's dorm, absolutely embarrassed. As I pass through the hallway, several of the students laugh loudly at me. âWhat's going on, Debby? You're trending on Olivia's i***a,â Charlotte, my best friend, mouthed to me as she saw me with an apologetic look on her face.
I couldn't answer her nor could I return to my room to cry in peace as Olivia had said. Everywhere I turned, it seemed people were waiting for me there, waiting to criticise me or to laugh at me for still being a virgin. It also seemed they were running after me as wellâbecause why did it seem like footsteps were following me?
I turned back briefly and truly some of the students were running after me, with their phones clutched in their hands like they were still videoing my run of shame.
As I got to the end of the hallway, only two escape options remainedâthe gym and the male locker bathroom. I couldn't go to the gym because there was no place to hide in there as all the work out machines were in one open hall. And the male locker room was out of bounds for females for obvious reasons.
âDeborah, the borer, come take a selfie with us,â I hear Olivia's voice.
âWe want your autograph, borer,â one of her minions called far behind me.
Left with no choice, I ran into the male locker bathroom hoping that it was completely empty as practice ended more than two hours ago.
As soon as I enter, I lock the door behind me and rush to hide in one of the bathroom stalls with my head facing the floor because I had no inclination to know what the boys bathroom looked like.
As I took a few hurried steps, my body suddenly collided with something hard, making me jump in shock. With my heart racing, I lost my balance for a moment, my hands instinctively reaching out to steady myself as strong arms reach out to hold me steady at the same time.
I freeze, holding my breath as standing in front of me is Liam Reynods, with his chest bare and wet and a towel wrapped around his waist, it was obvious he had just finished taking a shower.
Before either of us could say anything, Liam's towel drops on the floor. âHuh!â I gasp, keeping my head at his eye level, âdid your towel just fall?â I ask.
âWhy? Do you wanna sneak a peak?â Liam asked in a cocky voice, looking down at his body.
Unable to hold it in any longer, I burst out in tears as this wasn't how I had pictured my day or my confession to go.
âOh, come on. It's not that bad,â Liam said, his hands still around me. But I don't realise that as my tears pour out more.
âI just told Caleb that I was in love with him, but then Olivia was there and now the whole school is gonna know that I'm aâŚâ before I could complete my statement through my tears.
âVirgin,â I hear Olivia call from the other side of the door, her hands hitting against the door like she knew for sure that I was in here. âAre you in there trying to slip on some guy in the shower?â she asked as I heard her minions chuckling excitedly beside her. âCome on, I know you're in there, Virgin. I can smell library dust and eyeglass cleaner,â she added as she rattled the door knob.
Without realising it, I shrunk further into Liam's body hoping that I would just disappear and totally avoid the disaster that was about to happen if Olivia caught me in there.
In one swift move, Liam moved me to one of the bathroom stalls. Then quickly moving back, I hear Liam bend to pick up his towel, securing it tightly around his waist before opening the door.
âOh Liam,â I hear Olivia say, disappointment clearly dripping from her tone.
âThere are no virgins here, but you already knew that right?â Liam says with a playful smile on his face.
âGoodbye, ex-boyfriend,â Olivia said with a roll of her eyes, then she turned and walked away, but not before both her minions sneak a peek into the room.
As soon as I heard the door lock back, I breathed a sigh of relief, âthank you,â I said to Liam as soon as I came out of the bathroom stalls.
Wiping my tears with my palm, I decided to go to my room since the coast was clear, but as I walked past Liam, his hand held on to my arm, stopping me. âOh not so fast, Deborah the ignorer,â he said, turning me to face him.
âI saved you and now you owe me, big time,â He continued.
âNo way. Guys like you only want one thing,â I replied. The fact that Liam helped hide me from Olivia can never change the way I see him.
âSuch as?â He asked, leaning his back against one of the bathroom stalls, with what looked like a smug smile on his lips.
âHelp passing maths,â I replied with a roll of my eyes. Liam was a player who was used to using whomever to get whatever he wanted.
âListen, I've got a really weird tech situation, and I know you're good with that kind of stuff. But it's gotta be kept a secret,â Liam replied, pressing his fingers together like he was nervous.
Was I reading that wrong? Why would the captain of our college basketball team be nervous about asking a tech nerd for help? My eyes widened slightly as the answer occurred to me.
âIf you got a virus from a p**n site, that's your own problem,â I replied.
âWhat? No, no. That's not it. Some stranger has been putting money into my account and I'm worried they're setting me up to make it look like I'm throwing games,â he replied.
My brows furrowed in confusion, âMatch fixing? That also sounds super dodgy, I'm not touching it,â I replied then turned to leave.
âWait,â Liam said, stopping me with his hand on my arm again. âWhat if we made a deal?â
Deborah's POV Tears were streaming freely down my face now, hot trails of salt water that burned against my skin as they fell. I could taste them at the corners of my mouth, bitter and metallic like blood or fear or both mixed together. My vision blurred with the moisture, making the harsh light from the overhead bulb seem to shimmer and dance in front of me like something underwater. But even through the tears, even through the terror that was making my entire body shake with tremors I couldn't control, I remained alert and waiting for any opportunity to fight back. I wasn't going to just sit here passively and let whatever was about to happen simply unfold without resistance. That wasn't who I was, and it wasn't who Liam had helped me become over these past months. When Caleb's fingers moved closer to my face, trailing from my hair toward my mouth with that same deceptive gentleness that made my skin crawl, I saw my chance. Without allowing myself time to think about the consequenc
Third Person POV"What deal?" Caleb asked, his voice taking on a sharper edge of curiosity as he stopped his restless pacing and focused entirely on Deborah's words. Deborah shifted slightly in her chair, the ropes around her wrists cutting deeper into her skin with the movement. The bare bulb overhead cast harsh shadows across her face as she looked up at him, trying to gauge his mood and find the safest way to answer his question. The concrete floor beneath her feet felt colder now, as if the temperature in the room had dropped several degrees."Liam was supposed to help me get your attention while I helped him trace some money in his account in return," she said, her voice steady despite the fear that was making her heart race. The words came out clearly, each syllable carefully articulated as she tried to maintain some sense of control over the conversation. As soon as the explanation left her lips, Deborah watched Caleb's expression change in a way that made her stomach drop. In what seemed to be a basement, Deborah was seated in a chair with her hands tied on either side to the wooden armrests, the rough rope burning against her wrists as she tested the bonds that held her captive. The fibers scratched against her skin every time she moved, leaving red marks that stung with each subtle shift of position. She had no way of wriggling herself loose - Caleb, who had tied these knots had done so with expertise and deliberate care to ensure she remained exactly where they wanted her.The air in the basement was thick and stale, carrying the musty smell of dampness and concrete that seemed to cling to everything around her. A single bare bulb hung from the ceiling above, casting harsh shadows that danced across the gray walls as it swayed slightly from some unseen air current. The light was bright enough to illuminate her immediate surroundings but left the corners of the room shrouded in darkness that seemed to press in on her from all sides. The concrete floor
Liam's POV"Caleb?" I asked, my voice cracking with surprise as the name hit me like a physical blow. The word seemed to echo in the space between the bookshelves, bouncing off the walls and coming back to me distorted and strange. My mind struggled to process what Olivia had just told me, trying to make sense of why my teammate and supposed friend would be with Deborah at a time like this."Why would Caleb be with Deborah?" I asked again, the question directed more to myself than to Olivia and her group, who were standing there watching me with expressions that ranged from confusion to mild curiosity. My voice sounded hollow and distant even to my own ears, as if it were coming from someone else entirely.Students at nearby tables continued their quiet conversations and study sessions as I stood there trying to make sense of this new information. Then, like pieces of a puzzle suddenly clicking into place, memories began flooding back to me with startling clarity. Each recollection fe
Liam's POV With the same speed as I had run out of my room, I dashed into the library with my phone still held to my ear, the device pressed so tightly against my head that it was starting to make my ear ache. My heart hammered against my ribs like a caged animal trying to break free, each beat so powerful I could feel it pulsing in my throat and temples. The familiar smell of old books and cleaning supplies hit me as I burst through the glass entrance doors, but I barely registered it through the fog of panic that had consumed my thoughts."Please, pick up the phone," I pleaded desperately into the device, my voice cracking with emotion as I spoke to the empty air around me. I could hear her phone ringing through my speaker, that familiar tone that I had heard countless times before when we would call each other to make plans. But now that innocent sound felt like a countdown to disaster, each ring marking another second that passed without knowing if she was safe. The fluorescent l
Third Person POV "Okay, I will come with you," Deborah quietly replied, her voice barely audible above the ambient sounds of the library around them. The words felt like lead in her mouth, heavy and bitter, but she knew she had little or no choice when it came to Liam's safety. The threat Caleb had just made hung in the air between them like a sword suspended by a thread, and she couldn't risk calling his bluff when Liam's life was potentially at stake. Caleb smiled slightly at her surrender, the expression cold and satisfied like that of a predator who had successfully cornered its prey. The smile didn't reach his eyes, which remained as calculating and dangerous as they had been throughout their entire confrontation. He let go of her shoulder, his fingers releasing their grip with deliberate slowness, as if he wanted her to remember the feel of his hand on her body as a reminder of his physical dominance. Then he turned around, his movements casual and confident, knowing she wou
