LOGINDeborahâs POV
âYou help me and I'll help you get Caleb,â Liam said. âAnd boom, you'll be swinging fifth base in no time.â
Unable to understand what he was driving at, I stared at Liam.
It seems he realized my confusion so he added, âThat's a sexual reference for you seeing as you want to have sex with Caleb.â
I take a deep breath, âIt's not just sex, I love Caleb,â I replied, adjusting my glasses on my nose. âI've been saving myself for him,â I added even though I know a guy like Liam wouldn't understand.
âSo, do we have a deal?â Liam asked.
âOkay. But I need to clear something up. Swinging fifth base?I thought it was sinking in dunks as we don't have bases in basketball.â
Liam chuckled and replied simply, âYou have some work to do.â
âYou think I'm a joke, right?â I asked Of course everyone in the school had turned me into a laughing stock, he wouldn't be any different.
âIt's called teasing, Deborah,â Liam laughed simply with a light jab on my shoulder.
Seeing that I wasn't laughing, Liam turned serious and asked, âdo you want Caleb or not?â
That question sounded like a lifeline, it did not matter who was holding the rope as long as it got me the love of my life. With a small hopeful smile on my lips, I replied, âSo, you'll teach me how to flirt andâŚyou know, do things?â
Liam's eyes widened a bit, âYou want me to teach you how to kiss, Deborah?â he asked as he slowly walked towards me, his eyes on my lips.
âI just want to know what Caleb would expect,â I replied, looking up to him as he was already standing an inch away from me. âI'm not super familiar with this kind of stuff,â I confess.
âAlright,â Liam replied simply. âMaybe we should tackle it in order. List it for me.â
Without missing a beat, and using my fingers to enunciate, I replied simply, âFlirting, fashion, technique.â
Liam chuckled softly, âOkay. It seems you've spent some time thinking about this.â
I chuckled in response. Of course I've spent a larger part of the last ten years of my life thinking about this.
âAlright,â Liam replied. âFlirting skills first, and then boom fifth base.â
âSounds good. Just don't forget about fashion,â I remind him with a hopeful smile, holding the edges of my cardigan for emphasis.
âCool. We need a deadline,â Liam said again. âHow about that fundraiser dance for the basketball team. You could make your big move there.â
âBut that's only over three weeks away,â I replied, already panicking. That was a really short time. How was I supposed to learn everything by then?
It seemed Liam noticed my panic, âCalm down. You're not that hopeless,â he replied. âWe can meet up tomorrow morning to discuss tactics.â
âOkay. That sounds good,â I replied with a small relieved smile. âMy whole life is gonna change,â I giggle excitedly trying my best to hold in my excitement. âGo team,â I added, stretching out my clenched fist for a fist bump.
As Liam stretched out his fist to fist bump mine, I stretched my hand open before he could, making him fist bump my open palm instead. âOh snap, gotcha,â I said, then turned to leave.
It didn't matter that Liam had a confused look on his face, I'm sure he wondered what geeky joke that was. But I was in high heavens, I was too happy to care.

The next day, I wore my cardiganâI saw it as my goodluck charm since help had come to me while I was wearing it. As soon as I finished my 8am online safety and security lecture, I walked quickly towards my roomâI needed to get a few assignments done before meeting up with Liam in his room.
As I turned around a corner I heard a familiar voice, âDeborah, just the person I wanted to see,â Olivia said, her voice sounding like she was carrying a tune. Two of her minions stood behind on either side of her, it was as if they were her contact shadow.
Oh shit. This can't be happening right now.
âI wanted to say that I'm sorry about yesterday,â Olivia said, looking really apologetic.
My eyes widened in surprise as I replied, âyou did?â
âYeah. I was just really really insecure because I really like Caleb,â Olivia admitted, âbut I should've reacted that way.â
âYeah, It's okay,â I replied. I knew Caleb was a really hot guy, so it was no surprise that Olivia, the captain of the cheerleaders would be interested in him too. Since I could understand that, it was really easy for me to forgive her.
âDid you hear about the keg party happening tonight? You should totally come,â Olivia offered excitedly. âAll of us lost our virginities at keg parties, didn't we girls?â she asked her minions behind her.
âTotally,â they both replied while doing one of their cheerleading moves with their hands like they always did.
As soon as they were done, Olivia walked past me with two of them in tow.
What had just happened? I ask myself, trying to process what Olivia had just said. Was she inviting me to a keg party? I knew Olivia was a bully as I had seen her bullying other kids, did she really want to be friends with me? I wondered as I continued the walk to my room.
A little while later, I'm sitting on my desk getting some homework done. I heard my door open, as I looked up, I saw Liam walking in.
âWhat the hell, Deborah? Do you even live here?â he asked, his gaze sweeping around my room. âIt's so freaking neat.â
âI like things organised,â I replied, a little impatient at the interruption. As I turned my head back to my books, I heard a ruffle sound.
âWhat are you doing?â I asked with lifted brows as soon as I saw one of my drawers open.
âI'm just checking to see if your underwear is color-coded,â Liam replied with a mischievous smile on his face. âThey probably gave the maths solution of the week on them,â he added, peering into the opened drawer.
What the heck? I exclaim in my head. This is the exact reason I don't like this dude. Quickly getting up, I shut the drawer, âMy underwear is none of your business,â I replied, standing in front of Liam.
âI think it kind of is,â he began, stepping closer to me, âthat is if you want my help with Caleb.â
Looking up at him, I realise he was right but that did nothing to stop my resolve. âCan we please stop talking about my underwear?â I muttered.
Without another word, Liam stared into my eyes. It seemed like his eyes were peering into my soul, seeing all the hidden places I had kept away from the world. With his eyes still on mine, he slowly removed my glasses and stared closer. âWhat are you doing?â I muttered, trying not to seem nervous.
âYou have such incredible eyes, Deborah,â Liam whispered, his voice sounding a bit rough and husky, âI never noticed how beautiful there were before.â
Deborah's POV ***Two years later***I stood in front of my bedroom mirror, adjusting my graduation cap for what felt like the hundredth time. The tassel kept falling in my face no matter how many bobby pins I used to secure it."Stop fussing," Charlotte said from where she sat on my bed, already dressed in her own cap and gown from our graduation from college two years ago. "You look perfect.""I look like I'm wearing a very flat hat," I muttered, but I stopped touching it anyway.Today was the day. Graduation day. Not just any graduation either, but grad school graduation with honours. The gold cord around my neck marked me as someone who had achieved academic excellence. My phone buzzed with a text from Liam saying he was already at the venue with my mim rqcand the rest of our group."Ready?" Charlotte asked, standing and smoothing down her dress. She had taken the day off work to be here."As ready as I'll ever be," I said, grabbing my purse. The drive to the university auditorium
Deborah's POV The sunlight streaming through my dorm room window felt warmer than it had in weeks, or maybe I was just finally able to appreciate it again. I stretched in my bed, feeling the pleasant ache of muscles that had been worked hard during my morning self-defense session with Liam.Over the next few weeks, things slowly started to feel normal again, or at least a new version of normal that I could live with. We resumed our last semester in college. I laughed more. That was the biggest change I noticed. Real laughter that came from deep in my belly and made my cheeks hurt. Not the polite, careful laughter I had been forcing in those first days after the hospital, but genuine joy at silly things like Charlotte tripping over her own feet or Liam making terrible puns that were so bad they circled back to being funny."You're smiling," Charlotte observed from where she sat cross-legged on her bed, textbooks spread around her in organized chaos."Am I?" I touched my face and real
Deborah's POV My hands shook as I unfolded the letter, the paper crinkling softly in the quiet hospital room. Charlotte had moved closer, her presence a silent support, while my mother hovered on the other side of the bed looking worried.I read the first line, and my heart dropped. As I read the contents of the letter, tears dropped freely down my face, blurring the words until I had to blink several times to clear my vision enough to continue reading. The letter wasn't long. Maybe that made it worse somehow. All it said was how he loved me too much to keep putting me in harm's way and how it was best we separated because I was no longer safe with him. Each word felt like a knife cutting into my chest. I could picture him writing this, probably with tears in his own eyes, convincing himself he was doing the right thing. The noble thing. Protecting me by leaving me.But he was wrong. He was so completely, utterly wrong."That idiot," I whispered, then said it louder. "That complete i
The hospital hallway smelled like antiseptic and floor polish, sharp and chemical in a way that made Liam's eyes water if he breathed too deeply. Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting everything in a harsh white glow that made everyone look slightly ill. While the police came to take statements and photograph evidence, Deborah and all those who had been injured were rushed to the hospital in a convoy of ambulances, their sirens wailing through the night like a chorus of grief.Liam had ridden in the ambulance with Deborah, holding her cold hand while the paramedics worked around him. Her face had been so pale, almost grey in the harsh ambulance lighting. Her breathing had been shallow and rapid, her pulse thready under his fingertips."Is she going to be okay?" he had asked the paramedic, a middle-aged woman with kind eyes."We're doing everything we can," she had replied, which wasn't really an answer at all. Now, hours later, Liam sat in an uncomfortable plastic chair in the I
Deborah smiled as she watched Emma play around the garden. The little girl was chasing butterflies through the rose bushes, her laughter carrying across the manicured lawn like music. Emma's dark hair bounced with each leap, and her small hands reached out, trying to catch the delicate insects that always managed to flutter just out of reach. It had easily been a couple of days since Liam brought her back to his family's home. Four days, to be exact. Four days of slowly piecing herself back together in this place that felt more like a fortress than a house, with its high walls and security cameras and armed guards stationed at every entrance. And though she still had a few nightmares about Noah and Alice and even sometimes Caleb, she knew she was getting better. The nightmares came less frequently now. Some nights, she even slept through until morning without waking up screaming. It was all thanks to Liam and Charlotte. She saw their effort in every small gesture. The way Liam never l
Liam's POV Please be fine. Please be safe. The words circled around my mind like a prayer. I couldn't stop repeating, over and over until they lost all meaning and became just sounds, just desperate noise filling the silence of my own fear.My hands gripped the dashboard of the lead security vehicle so hard my knuckles had gone white. Every second felt like an hour. Every mile stretched out endlessly in front of us.We were tracking the location of the last call Alice had made. One of my father's tech people had traced it within minutes, pulling strings and accessing systems that probably weren't entirely legal, but I didn't care about that right now. All I cared about was finding Deborah.Alice had ordered takeout and had it delivered to an abandoned warehouse at the outskirts of town, which was a bit far from the college. Too far. The distance made my chest tight with anxiety. What if we were too late? What if something had already happened? While I prayed for Deborah's safety, ano
