LOGINDeborahâs POV
âThey are just eyes and I have two of them like everyone else,â I said plainly, wondering what exactly he was playing at.
âCome on, Deborah. I was flirting with you,â Liam said, with a roll of his eyes.
âYou see, this is why I need help,â I groaned in frustration. The fact that I did not realise Liam was flirting with me, meant it might have been possible that Caleb had flirted with me in the past and I did not know, âOh my God. I'm a hopeless case,â I groaned, feeling sorry for myself. âWhy couldn't I see what you were doing?â I asked as I moved back to my bed to sit.
âYou just have to be open to signals. Don't be Deborah the ignorer,â Liam said with a small smile.
I realise this wasn't the first time Liam had called me Deborah the ignorer. âDid I ignore you?â I asked, trying to figure out the reason behind the nickname.
Liam looked like he wanted to say something, but was holding himself back. âWhy would you care if I ignored you?â I asked again, wondering if he was really serious about what he was saying.
Without saying anything, Liam moved slowly towards me and knelt in front of me, âBecause you have such beautiful eyes,â he said, his voice sounding sensual, while he tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear.
I looked at him for a few seconds, my mind still blank. âYou're flirting again,â I said as a self-satisfied smile spread across my lips.
âYeah,â Liam replied with a smile of his own. âYou're supposed to say something flirty back.â
âSomething flirty back,â I repeated, thinking about it. âOh, I know. I'll say it to Caleb tonight at the party,â I added with a triumphant smile. âWhat do you think?â
Liam stood up abruptly, his smile instantly disappearing like something offended him, âYeah, you can do that,â he replied curtly. âBut just remember you're still in training so don't expect miracles.â
I nod my head knowing that he is right.
âWe'll need to have another flirting lesson," he added.

As I approached the venue for the keg party, I could hear the sound of thumping music from outside, and it grew louder the closer I got. The porch light flickered, casting shadows on the faces of the students milling around outside. I could feel the bass vibrating through the soles of my low heel shoes as I and Liam joined the crowdâhe had offered to walk in with me since this was my first party.
Inside, the air was thick with the smell of beer and sweat. Red solo cups littered every surface, and people laughed and shouted over the music. The living room was packed, with several bodies sweating to the beat of the music on the makeshift dance floor. I adjusted my glasses, as I looked around for Caleb.
âAlright, I'll get us some drinks,â Liam said with a smile, stopping me at one corner of the room, âJust try to be cool.â
With a smile across my face, I bump him lightly on his shoulder with my fist, âDude, when am I not cool,â I replied. âOh my God, there is Caleb,â I exclaim as soon as I spot him.
âYeah, good luck,â Liam muttered, his smile disappearing again from his face.
With my attention on Caleb, I don't bother even as Liam walks away. âI should go to him, I have to go,â I muttered to myself, my eyes still on Caleb.
I exhale the breath I didn't even know I was holding when I saw Caleb dance towards me.
âHey,â I greeted nervously as Caleb stopped in front of me.
âI thought you were staring at me from over there,â Caleb said, while his body moved lightly to the music.
âWas I?â I asked, trying my hand at the flirting. With a defeated sigh, I added, âI'm sorry if I was weird yesterday.â
âDon't worry about it. Olivia is a bitch,â Caleb replied, and you are awesome.â
âAm I?â I asked excitedly. Everything felt like it was happening just the way I wanted. I had successfully flirted my way into Caleb's view and he was feeling me in every possible way.
Then I felt something hit my face, making me blink my eyes, a bit startled. When I steadied my glasses, I realised the last few seconds were all in my head and Caleb was only just walking towards me.
âHey,â I greeted, more nervous than I was in my imagination.
âHey,â Caleb replied simply.
âSorry, I didn't mean to interrupt,â I said, wondering where all my courage disappeared to.
âCool,â Caleb replied in the same cool manner.
âCool,â I replied as nothing more crossed through my mind at that moment. Caleb threw a ping pong ball into one of the red solo cups beside me, making me realise that was what had hit me the first time. âSorry if I was being weird yesterday,â I said, trying to act cool like one of the guys, but it only made me feel more awkward.
âYou don't have to say it, It's cool,â Caleb replied, his tone sounding like he was bored.
âOkay,â I nodded with a smile that really felt like a grimace. At that moment I spot Olivia and her minionsâMindy and Cindy.
âYes, she does,â Olivia said with a satisfied smile like she was really elated to see me here. âDoesn't she, girls?â she asked, turning to look on both sides of her.
âWhatever âitâ is,â Mindy replied, using her fingers to illustrate the quotation mark.
âAnd I think âitâ is her vagina,â Olivia continued.
âIt's like a vagina, only dryer,â Cindy said, with a smile for what I presumed was her smart input.
âWe call it, a Deborah,â Mindy added.
I stood looking at each of them as they took turns hurling insults in the form of rhymes at me, my heart sank as I heard Caleb laugh with them from the corner of my eyes. The next thing I know, Olivia's hand is moving towards my face. I flinched, expecting the hard hit.
âWhat the hell do you think you're doing?â I heard Liam ask. As I turned towards his direction, I noticed he had caught Olivia's hand, and stopped it from reaching my face.
âWe're doing nothing,â Olivia muttered, taking a step back.
âShe means you,â Mindy said, referring to me.
âBecause, you're nothing,â Olivia said with a sly smile.
I stood wondering why they decided to go with lousy rhymes that didn't even match so much with each other, but the most painful part was the fact that Caleb stood thereâcompletely silent, while Liam, who didn't mean anything to me, did his best to stop Olivia's bullying.
âOh, I thought you were talking about how much lube you need,â Liam said simply.
I saw the surprise register on Olivia's face at the interruption.
âShe buys it in venti-sized tubes too,â Liam added, making me snicker lightly in response.
âFuck you!â Olivia exclaimed in shock while those within earshot laughed.
âBut with the number of guys you're seeing, it's probably up to Trenta, right?â Liam said, his voice a little louder. âThat's the largest one,â Liam whispered to me.
âOh!â I exclaimed as understanding dawned on me and I couldn't help but laugh out loud, even Caleb did as well.
âDon't you dare laugh,â Olivia said to Caleb angrily, using her hand to jab him.
âWhy is it all about me all of a sudden?â Caleb asked even as he snickered and walked away from where we all stood.
Obviously annoyed that her insults turned on her, Olivia turned to Liam, âWhat do you even see in this boring nobody? Deborah the borer, or does her bony body make your boner look bigger?â She asked smugly.
Deborah's POV ***Two years later***I stood in front of my bedroom mirror, adjusting my graduation cap for what felt like the hundredth time. The tassel kept falling in my face no matter how many bobby pins I used to secure it."Stop fussing," Charlotte said from where she sat on my bed, already dressed in her own cap and gown from our graduation from college two years ago. "You look perfect.""I look like I'm wearing a very flat hat," I muttered, but I stopped touching it anyway.Today was the day. Graduation day. Not just any graduation either, but grad school graduation with honours. The gold cord around my neck marked me as someone who had achieved academic excellence. My phone buzzed with a text from Liam saying he was already at the venue with my mim rqcand the rest of our group."Ready?" Charlotte asked, standing and smoothing down her dress. She had taken the day off work to be here."As ready as I'll ever be," I said, grabbing my purse. The drive to the university auditorium
Deborah's POV The sunlight streaming through my dorm room window felt warmer than it had in weeks, or maybe I was just finally able to appreciate it again. I stretched in my bed, feeling the pleasant ache of muscles that had been worked hard during my morning self-defense session with Liam.Over the next few weeks, things slowly started to feel normal again, or at least a new version of normal that I could live with. We resumed our last semester in college. I laughed more. That was the biggest change I noticed. Real laughter that came from deep in my belly and made my cheeks hurt. Not the polite, careful laughter I had been forcing in those first days after the hospital, but genuine joy at silly things like Charlotte tripping over her own feet or Liam making terrible puns that were so bad they circled back to being funny."You're smiling," Charlotte observed from where she sat cross-legged on her bed, textbooks spread around her in organized chaos."Am I?" I touched my face and real
Deborah's POV My hands shook as I unfolded the letter, the paper crinkling softly in the quiet hospital room. Charlotte had moved closer, her presence a silent support, while my mother hovered on the other side of the bed looking worried.I read the first line, and my heart dropped. As I read the contents of the letter, tears dropped freely down my face, blurring the words until I had to blink several times to clear my vision enough to continue reading. The letter wasn't long. Maybe that made it worse somehow. All it said was how he loved me too much to keep putting me in harm's way and how it was best we separated because I was no longer safe with him. Each word felt like a knife cutting into my chest. I could picture him writing this, probably with tears in his own eyes, convincing himself he was doing the right thing. The noble thing. Protecting me by leaving me.But he was wrong. He was so completely, utterly wrong."That idiot," I whispered, then said it louder. "That complete i
The hospital hallway smelled like antiseptic and floor polish, sharp and chemical in a way that made Liam's eyes water if he breathed too deeply. Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting everything in a harsh white glow that made everyone look slightly ill. While the police came to take statements and photograph evidence, Deborah and all those who had been injured were rushed to the hospital in a convoy of ambulances, their sirens wailing through the night like a chorus of grief.Liam had ridden in the ambulance with Deborah, holding her cold hand while the paramedics worked around him. Her face had been so pale, almost grey in the harsh ambulance lighting. Her breathing had been shallow and rapid, her pulse thready under his fingertips."Is she going to be okay?" he had asked the paramedic, a middle-aged woman with kind eyes."We're doing everything we can," she had replied, which wasn't really an answer at all. Now, hours later, Liam sat in an uncomfortable plastic chair in the I
Deborah smiled as she watched Emma play around the garden. The little girl was chasing butterflies through the rose bushes, her laughter carrying across the manicured lawn like music. Emma's dark hair bounced with each leap, and her small hands reached out, trying to catch the delicate insects that always managed to flutter just out of reach. It had easily been a couple of days since Liam brought her back to his family's home. Four days, to be exact. Four days of slowly piecing herself back together in this place that felt more like a fortress than a house, with its high walls and security cameras and armed guards stationed at every entrance. And though she still had a few nightmares about Noah and Alice and even sometimes Caleb, she knew she was getting better. The nightmares came less frequently now. Some nights, she even slept through until morning without waking up screaming. It was all thanks to Liam and Charlotte. She saw their effort in every small gesture. The way Liam never l
Liam's POV Please be fine. Please be safe. The words circled around my mind like a prayer. I couldn't stop repeating, over and over until they lost all meaning and became just sounds, just desperate noise filling the silence of my own fear.My hands gripped the dashboard of the lead security vehicle so hard my knuckles had gone white. Every second felt like an hour. Every mile stretched out endlessly in front of us.We were tracking the location of the last call Alice had made. One of my father's tech people had traced it within minutes, pulling strings and accessing systems that probably weren't entirely legal, but I didn't care about that right now. All I cared about was finding Deborah.Alice had ordered takeout and had it delivered to an abandoned warehouse at the outskirts of town, which was a bit far from the college. Too far. The distance made my chest tight with anxiety. What if we were too late? What if something had already happened? While I prayed for Deborah's safety, ano
