LOGINThe vehicle chasing us finally came to a halt. By then, I had completely lost my appetite for the meal Mr. Asero and I had previously discussed.
We were halfway down the road when Mr. Asero suddenly slammed on the brakes.
"I think I hit someone. Wait, let me check," the old man said anxiously.
I massaged my temples before stepping out of the vehicle to see what had happened.
"Is she dead?"
"No, but we need to take her to the hospital. She lost consciousness."
I furrowed my brows. Somehow, the woman's face looked familiar to me.
"Move to the front seat for now, Mr. Smith."
The young man didn't say a word and simply followed the old man's instructions.
After the woman was rushed to the emergency room, I asked Mr. Asero to stay behind and make sure she was safe.
I went home ahead of him. At that moment, I was in the library, organizing the papers I had recently been studying. They contained documents and several findings concerning the woman I had ordered someone to investigate—Jacob's ex-girlfriend.
I carefully straightened the framed photograph of Jacob and me. It was the last picture he had taken with me. The anger in my heart resurfaced, causing me to clench my fists.
"I will find her, Jacob. And when I do, I'll make sure even her soul suffers."
I uttered those words while staring intently at the photograph in my hands.
The door opened, revealing Merliza. She was smiling as she carried a tray of food.
"Iza, do you need something?"
"I brought you something to eat. I know you haven't eaten yet, so go ahead. I cooked this myself."
I glanced at the young woman standing before me. She was undeniably beautiful, and I couldn't deny that everything she wore suited her perfectly. She possessed the kind of qualities most men would find irresistible—except me.
I wasn't oblivious to the unusual attention Iza had been giving me. However attractive she might be, she could never capture my heart. That's why, whenever possible, I made sure to treat her like a younger sister so she wouldn't develop deeper feelings for me.
"Just leave it there. I'll eat later."
"Forget later, okay? Eat first before you get back to work, Lance."
I eventually gave in. It seemed she was only a moment away from feeding me herself. I immediately started eating the food Merliza had brought. I had grown accustomed to calling her Iza. She was far too close to me, which often made me uncomfortable.
"Thanks, Iza."
"You're welcome, Lance. I'd do anything for you."
"Iza..."
"Like a brother, Lance. You remind me of my late brother, Kuya Jacob. He was the one who had your heart, and that's why I'm this close to you."
Merliza smiled at me, but her smile quickly faded when her eyes landed on the framed photograph. The moment she saw it, I noticed the longing in her eyes.
"So you still have Kuya's picture."
"I'm sorry. I was actually about to put it away."
My voice softened as I immediately picked up the photograph of Jacob and me and placed it inside the drawer.
I could feel Iza's anger and grief over losing her brother.
"I'm okay. Just tell me when you're done. I... I have something to do. I'll leave you alone now."
Merliza's voice cracked before she walked away.
I felt sorry for her. I knew she was still hurting over her brother's death. That was why I felt responsible for looking after her and taking care of her like a younger sister.
I let out a sigh of relief. It was clear that Iza genuinely regarded me as a brother, and I was thankful for that.
SANTIARA'S POVI noticed the man stealing glances at me. He even smiled, causing me to quickly avert my gaze instead of staring back at him.I froze, and my heart began pounding nervously.I let out a sigh, composed myself, and forced a smile. However, one of my eyebrows arched at the man's next move. My eyes widened when the young man winked at me, followed by a mischievous smile.“What a flirt! So, this guy has a mischievous side after all. Tsk! He already has a girlfriend, yet he still has the nerve to flirt with other women!”I decided to avoid making eye contact with him and hurriedly continued working. I didn't want to give our manager another reason to reprimand me.“Hey, Santiara, can I ask you a favor?” Ivory asked in a sweet, pleading voice.“What is it?”“Could you work overtime for me later? I can't today, you know how it is. There's no one to look after my child.”I felt sorry for her, so I agreed to Ivory's request. After all, I was living alone. Even if I worked overtim
SANTIARA'S POVAt that moment, I was in the middle of cleaning a table when I glanced outside. Just then, I caught sight of a familiar car.But my jaw nearly dropped when the man I recognized stepped out of it.I immediately turned around and hurried to finish cleaning the table. My heart was pounding, not because I was embarrassed, but because of something I had done in my entire life.“Dear God, please... I hope he doesn't remember my face.”“Are you okay?” I immediately heard Ivory ask.I simply smiled at her before walking toward the kitchen. I stole a quick glance outside and saw the two of them taking their seats.“What are you looking at, Miss Marasigan? Come on! Get moving. We still have plenty of work to do!” one of my coworkers scolded me impatiently.I smiled at her and lowered my head as I headed toward the service area.“Miss Marasigan, table ten!” Ivory called out to me.I froze and widened my eyes at my friend, but she only grinned at me. I took a deep breath and gather
Inside the conference room, my jaw tightened when I saw Bernard Westeria. He was there with the chairperson and the four clients. The chairperson had arranged the appointment because the board of directors wanted to see the residential wine cellar for themselves.“Good morning, Mr. Chairman,” the chairperson greeted me.He was the chairman and president of Smith's company. He also owned his own winery in town and was known as a prominent young billionaire.I nodded, keeping my expression serious as I observed Merliza.“I didn't expect you to be here as well, Miss Smith. That's perfect, because we need your presence too,” the chairperson continued, then assisted Bernard Westeria, one of the board directors.Merliza smiled at him. I didn't miss the unusual sparkle in her eyes.“Actually, yes. We're having lunch after the meeting,” Merliza immediately answered. The chairperson smiled, while Bernard also grinned. He even managed to make a joke, causing my jaw to tighten. I didn't like wha
LANCELOTTE'S POVI gently rubbed my lower lip.A smirk tugged at the corner of my mouth as I recalled that woman's reaction. The faint smile that had been lingering on my lips seemed impossible to wipe away. I was only brought back to my senses when Mr. Asero spoke.“If you looked as though the world had ended for you earlier, why do you look like you're walking on air now?”“Did I? Anyway, don't mind me!”The old man shook his head, chuckling, before starting the engine.“Perhaps you're hungry now, Lancelotte. I bought those bags especially for you. Give them a try. They're delicious, and I guarantee you won't regret it.”I raised an eyebrow.“Really? If I don't like the taste, you're not allowed to go back there anymore. We'll order from somewhere else instead.”“Just taste it first. Then you can tell me what you don't like about it.”When I opened the paper bag, I found a mouthwatering special gyros pita inside.I recognized it immediately. I had tasted it once before when Merliza b
SANTIARA'S POVWhen I slowly opened my eyes, I found myself lying in a hospital bed. My brows furrowed as I looked around, trying to figure out where I was and who the people standing before me were."Where am I?""Goodness, I'm glad you're awake, young lady," an elderly man said as he approached me."Why am I here? W-What happened?""You fainted, young lady. I thought I'd run you over earlier.""D-Did I sleep for a long time? I'm s-sorry for causing you trouble. I need to leave."I hurriedly tried to fix myself before getting up."Let me take you home, young lady. You might faint again along the way," the old man offered."He's right. Let him take you home. Based on your test results, you're fine, but you don't seem to have enough strength yet," the doctor agreed."Thank you, but I might lose my job if I don't report to work today."I insisted before bowing my head in gratitude."Thank you, Doctor."The old man followed me and stopped me, asking me to come with him to the parking lot
