LOGINChapter 5
Whispers in the Atelier Fiorenza Elettra De Santis POV
The dawn light filtering through the high arched windows of the De Santis Atelier didn't feel like a new day,it made the place feel like something horrible had just happened.
I stood in the center of the main showroom floor, the silence thick and heavy around me. The men in polyester suits were gone.
The bailiffs had disappeared into the damp Milan morning, leaving the atelier looking almost abandoned empty brass racks, stripped mannequins, and carpet track marks like shallow graves.
By six o'clock this morning, the emergency seal at Moretti Tower had ended as suddenly as it began a "system glitch," Valeriano’s chief security detail had called it with a face like carved ice, But I knew better. It had been a warning. A subtle reminder of the dark, invisible forces circling the man whose ring I was about to wear.
The front glass doors opened with a soft, quick click, and Gianna slipped inside.
She looked exhausted. Dark shadow rested beneath her tired ,almond shaped eyes and honey blonde hair pulled back into a loose knot that was unravelling at her nape. She carried two paper cups of cheap espresso, her sketchbook squeezed tightly under her arm like a shield she refused to put down.
"Fio," she let out a tired breath, placing the cups on the empty cutting table. Her voice echoed in the cavernous, empty room. "I saw the press release on the local business wire twenty minutes ago. Tell me it’s a mistake. Tell me Moretti Corp didn't just announce a buyout."
I picked up one of the paper cups, the bitter steam rising into the cold air between us. "It’s not a mistake, Gianna."
"They’re calling it a business alliance," she said, her voice rising, tinged with a desperate note, "They’re saying you’re selling off the family shares to integrate into his luxury tech holdings.
Fio... what did you do?"
"I saved the house," I said quietly,
turning to look at the skeletal remains of our autumn runway collection. "I paid seven million."
Gianna froze. Her gaze moved over to my face, scanning for the catch, searching for the truth I was trying to swallow down.
"With what money? The banks froze our accounts yesterday”
"With his money," I said.
The words tasted like ash on my tongue. "Valeriano bought the debt directly. In exchange, I signed an exclusive management agreement. And... a contract."
"What kind of contract?" I asked
"A marriage contract," I whispered.
The silence that followed was unbearable. Gianna stepped back as if I had struck her.
The cup shook slightly in her hand before she set it down, her lower lip quivering with sudden, overwhelming anger and sorrow.
"No," Gianna choked out, her head shaking violently. "No, Fio, you can't, he's a monster.
Everyone in the city knows what Moretti Corp really is. He doesn't want a wife he wants to consume us He's going to swallow your name whole"
"He’s already swallowed it" I snapped,
the raw, burning stress of the last twenty four hours cracking through my composure. I stepped close to her, gripping her forearms, forcing her to look into my eyes. "He owns the debt, Gianna” He owns the building, the patterns, the silk vaults, the blood in my veins if he chooses to enforce the fine print, If I didn't sign that paper, the legal officer were going to put the locks on the doors at midnight and throw my father's memory into a public clearance pile"
Gianna’s eyes filled with tears, but she didn't pull away from my grip. "You sold yourself to a crime sell off pile!"
for a fashion house?"
"I didn't sell myself," I breathed, my thumb rubbing the soft fabric of her sleeve, grounding us both in the reality of the room. "I bought us time."
Gianna wiped her eyes with the back of her hand, taking a deep, ragged breath.
She walked over to the long cutting table, pulled out her sketchbook, and unzipped a side compartment of her leather tote.
"If you think this was just a simple debt buyout, you need to look at this," she said,
her voice dropped to a low whisper, and a chill ran down my arms.
She pulled out a thick stack of printed server logs raw, unedited digital information she had managed to mirror onto an external drive before the bank froze our main terminal. She spread the pages across the table, tapping her finger against a series of highlighted ledger codes.
"I stayed up all night checking the transaction times," Gianna said, her expressive face hardening into something sharp and analytical.
"When Moretti’s holding companies bought our debt, the transfer didn't originate from Moretti Corp’s central treasury in Milan."
I leaned over the table, my eyes scanning the dense columns of digital code.
"What do you mean?"
"Look at the proxy routing codes," she said, her fingernail tracing a line of red text. "The first push to force the bank into default came from an offshore account registered in a tiny alpine principality . But the authorization key. Fio, the digital key didn't belong to Valeriano Moretti."
I scowled looking up at her. "He admitted to owning the debt. He told me about himself at the club."
"He controls the result of the debt," Gianna countered, her eyes wide with a terrifying kind of clarity. "But the program that forced our accounts into automatic default three days ago was executed using an internal administrative clearance from inside our own network. Someone who had top level access to your father’s old private vault."
My chest tightened, the cold air in the atelier suddenly feeling impossibly thick. "My father disappeared six months ago. No one has had access to that vault except me... and him."
"Or someone who got access to his clearance," Gianna whispered,
leaning in closer. "Fio, this isn't just Valeriano hunting your father. Someone else triggered the downfall from the inside to force Valeriano and your family into a part toward. Moretti isn't just the predator here, he’s being manipulated too."
The realization hit me like a splash of ice water.
Valeriano believed that my father was a coward who always ordered the bloodbath of his family fifteen years ago. He had engineered this buy out of a cold, consuming obsession for vengeance.
But if Gianna’s data was right, someone was feeding his obsession pulling the threads from the dark to make sure we destroyed each other.
I looked down at the dark silver engagement band sitting on the edge of the cutting table, a ring delivered by Valeriano’s driver an hour ago, cold and heavy, waiting for my finger.
I picked it up. The luxury was ice against my skin, but as I slipped it onto my left ring finger, a quiet, dangerous fire triggered in my chest.
"He thinks he’s locked me in a cage," I whispered,
staring at the sparkling diamond cut like a shattered shard of glass. "He thinks he’s going to take me to his heavily guarded mansion in Lake Como, isolate me from the world, and watch me break while he waits for my father to show up."
"Fio... what are you thinking?" Gianna asked,
dread settled back into her voice.
"I’m thinking that the only way to find out who destroyed my family is to walk straight into the lion's den," I said,
my green brown eyes locking onto hers with unbreakable determination Valeriano wants a trophy wife to control? I will give him a war. I’m going to use this marriage, his estate, and his dark network as a position point.
Every secret he hides, every coded ledger in his vault, every enemy he keeps close I will tear it apart until I find the truth."
"He will kill you if he catches you spying on him," Gianna warned, her voice barely a breath.
"He won't kill me," I said, remembering the burning oppressive heat of his touch at the club, the way his silver eyes had blazed when I refused to back down, the strange, protective fury with which he had thrown his body over mine when the glass shattered.
"He’s fascinated by me. And that fascination is going to be his undoing."
Before Gianna could respond, the heavy double doors of the atelier blew open with a sudden, violent burst of wind.
Two broad, dark suited men with strategic earpieces stepped into the showroom, followed by Matteo Bellini. Matteo adjusted the cuffs of his tailored waistcoat, a permanent, polite knowing smile playing on his lips as his dark brown eyes swept over the empty room.
"Signorina De Santis," Matteo said, dripping his head in a gesture "Signor Moretti’s patience has expired. The private transport to Lake Como is waiting at the roadside. You are to leave immediately."
I turned slowly to face him, slipping my hands into the pockets of my coat. "And I need an hour to pack my personal belongings?"
Matteo’s grin widened slightly, but his eyes remained entirely cold. "Signor Moretti was explicit. Don't bring anything from your old life, Everything you require has already been provided at the villa for you,"
He stepped aside, monitoring toward the rain slicked street outside, where a convoy of three black armored SUVs sat lingering, their hazard lights flashing through the dim morning mist.
I looked back at Gianna one last time, offering her a slight barely noticeable. Hold the line here, the look said.
I took a breath, held my head high, and walked past Matteo out into the rain.
As I stepped into the backseat of the middle SUV, the heavy door slammed shut, sealing me into a silent, leather scented vacuum. The vehicle pulled away from the curb, leaving the De Santis Atelier behind in the mist.
I leaned my head against the cool car window, watching the city disappear behind us, my phone suddenly vibrated in my pocket.
It was an unknown number, A single text message lit up the black screen saying
’Do not trust the man sitting beside you. The mother is still breathing.’
My breath seized in my throat. I looked toward the front passenger seat, where Matteo was quietly adjusting his earpiece, his dark eyes watching me through the rearview mirror with that same polite, empty smirk.
The car raced north toward the lake, carrying me deeper into a dark, twisted world where every ally could be an enemy, and the man I was bound to was the deadliest monster of them all.
CHAPTER 6Valeriano POVThe rain over Lake Como did not fall, it lashed against the reinforced glass of the master suite like a warning, a relentless pounding rhythm that seemed to beat time against Fiorenza’s racing pulse. She stood stunned by the full height of the windows, her reflection ghostly against the dark, racing water of the lake below. The silk of her ivory travel gown felt less like a garment and more like a restraint, a crisp, elegant reminder of the contract signed in blood and ink just twenty four hours prior in the emptied out shell of the Milan atelier. With a trembling roughened thumb, she touched the small crescent shaped scar on her left collarbone, pressing down until the skin turned stark white, seeking physical pain to ground her against the surreal weight of her new reality. The heavy red reddish brown door clicked open with a soft, expensive lock.Valeriano.He didn't knock,He never knocked but He stepped into the room, shrugging off a charcoal overcoat

Chapter 4Terms of Enslavement Fiorenza Elettra De Santis POVThe rain continued as we left the private club all the way to the upper glass spire of Moretti Tower. The chaos in the dining room, the split second roar of gunfire, the shattering glass, the way Valeriano’s broad body had slammed over mine to shield me before his security neutralized the ambush was still ringing in my ears. I hadn't even been allowed to bleed or understand the danger. Before I could see clearly, I was swept into an armored vehicle and whisked up sixty five floors into his main headquarters. Now, the executive suite was unusually quiet. The room smelled of expensive leather, cold rain against warm glass, and the remaining metallic smell of tension.Valeriano stood near the window, unbuttoning his blood stained cuffs and rolling them up his forearms. He didn't look frightened. He looked like a man who had simply stepped out of a temporary inconvenience. The pale glow of the Milan skyline lit up
Chapter 3 The Ambush Meeting Fiorenza Elettra De Santis POVThe rain had turned the streets of Milan into black glass by the time the car pulled up outside Il Salotto, a private club hidden behind an unmarked limestone façade near the Galleria. There were no signboards, no paparazzi, only a heavy iron gate and a single guard who checked my name against a handwritten velvet guest list.I got out of the car, pulling my wool coat tighter around my shoulders. My heart was beating closely, and I could feel it in my chest . I had refused the black sedan Valeriano had sent to my atelier a tiny act of resistance perhaps, but one I needed to keep my knees from buckling. Instead, I had driven myself, bringing only the leather folder containing the partially burned ledger and the notes Gianna had managed to pull from our server archives.I was meeting a man named Signor Rossi, he is the chief rebuilding officer appointed by the central bank. Or at least, that was the name on the
CHAPTER 2 Shadow of the SyndicateValeriano Cosimo Moretti POVFrom the sixty fifth floor of Moretti Tower, Milan looks less like a historic city and more like a grid of light waiting to be claimed. Rain covers the last large windows, turning the church tower in the distance into grey, jagged teeth."The acquisition of the logistics hub in Genoa is complete. Signor Moretti," my Chief Financial Officer said, holding out a tablet with shaking hands. "The board signed off ten minutes ago.""Good," I said without turning around. My hands were held behind my back, the tailored wool of my suit jacket hiding the detailed dark ink that stretched across my shoulders and down my spine. a physical archive of blood, territory, and quiet vengeance. "Transfer forty percent of the available cash to our offshore holdings by midnight. Clear the remaining balance for the De Santis debt buyout.""Understood, sir." The CFO bowed slightly and backed out of the private observation room,
Chapter 1The Gilded RuinsFiorenza Elettra De Santis POVThe smell of mahogany and beeswax used to mean home, Now everything feels wrong and terrible.I stood upstairs, holding the wooden railing of the second floor. I held the wooden rail so tightly that my fingers turned white. Below me, the ground floor of the De Santis Atelier, a space that had breathed life into Italian high fashion for over half a century was being stripped bare by men who didn't even have the decency to wipe their mud caked shoes on the welcome mat."Miss De Santis, the collection for the upcoming autumn runway has been taken to cover a huge debt.“a voice squeaked from behind me”I didn't turn around immediately, I couldn't. I watched as two officers roughly dragged away a mannequin wearing a hand beaded red velvet gown, the last piece my father had ever touched with his own hands before he disappeared. I touched the small half moon shaped scar near my left collarbone. a nervous habit i always do whe
