Maria’s POV

Sophie’s words echoed in my mind, a haunting refrain I couldn’t escape: “If you see what you’re not supposed to with Alpha Felix, the penalty is death.”

It had been three days since her warning, and I had done everything in my power to avoid him. I ducked behind corners, lingered in the kitchens longer than necessary, and volunteered for the most menial tasks if it meant steering clear of his imposing figure.

But on the third day, my fragile sanctuary shattered. To be honest, when I woke up that morning, I felt that the day my luck would wane had come. I dressed up faster than I should and sat around, waiting, almost like I knew what was to come next.

"Maria," the head maid called, her voice clipped and impatient. "Alpha Felix has requested you to clean his chambers. Go now. Don't waste any time and make sure you do whatever he asks of you."

I froze, my heart pounding in my chest. "Me? Are you sure?"

"Do I look like I’m in the mood for questions?" she snapped.

Sophia's POV "Mom, it is important that you do what I have asked. It is the only way I will get out of this" I begged my mom, looking around frantically to ensure that no one else was watching this time around. "Fine. But you have to learn to do things better from now on. I can't make progress with this if I have to keep checking in on you all the time. Keep your emotions in check; this is something bigger than you, " she said and pulled back, disappearing into the night. "Okay," I muttered to myself even though she was already gone. One more dead body in place and I would have been totally cut clear of any ties with what is happening in the palace. It got harder by the day and with so many distractions around, I could barely hold it together in front of Leo. "I've been looking for you everywhere. The guards said you were here" Leo's voice broke into my thoughts as I jumped, nearly falling off the balcony. "Yeah. I came here to get some air. You have been busy and I didn't want

Maria's POV "You don't look pleased. Did Nathan say something to offend you?" Elijah asked me as soon as we were alone. "No, he didn't do anything wrong. I just wanted to retire for the night" I lied and sat down in the living room. "That's a lie and we both know it. You don't have anything to do tomorrow, you are avoiding someone and I'm sure as hell it isn't Elvira or me" he said and I smiled. "Why do you always have to be so critical of everything?" I asked him and he smiled, smoothening my hair with the back of his hand."Because I deeply care for you..." He started to say but stopped when Alexia appeared in the living room and went back to her room. She had obviously not expected to see us there. "It's shocking you know," I said and he straightened up in the chair. "What is?" He asked me. "Nathan being Elizabeth's twin. I can't imagine him not hating you especially since you didn't return Elizabeth's affection" I said to him and he laughed. "He is not as emotional as his

  • Veil Of Destiny   58: A New Dilemma

Maria's POV Life was going so well—too well, actually. Elvira had helped me settle in the pack, and Alexia had been the most helpful. I felt healthier than I had in months, and soon, the depressing state that I was always in was beginning to turn into a thing of the past. Elijah had promised to come around this evening, but I had yet to see him. He had mentioned that an old friend of his was coming to the pack. "Are you Looking for me?" Elvira said as she dropped a big bag of medical supplies beside me on the bench. I nearly jumped, but she simply smiled and settled in beside me. Alexia appeared almost immediately with two cups of smoothie and a plate of nicely chopped-up fruits. My eyes were warm and my body was very fresh, to be honest, I could see the hands of everyone in their contribution to making me feel better. "Thank you," I said to Alexia as she set up the plates. "Have you seen Elijah recently? He mentioned that Nathan was coming around and then disappeared?" Elvira as

  • Veil Of Destiny   57: A Call To Action

Alpha Leo's POV "Silence!" I called out when I saw that the men were still not quieting down. This meeting had gone on for long enough and we were yet to decide on a course of action or a possible reason why anyone would do this. There was a quiet knock on the door and we all turned our attention to the door. I gestured for the guard to check who wanted to interrupt such an important meeting. He came to me and whispered Sophia's name in my ears, I quickly asked him to send her in."My leaders, My Alpha" she greeted respectfully as soon as she came in. The room quietened down as the men acknowledged her greetings with a nod of their heads. I gave room for her to speak, seeing that she had cleaned up but her eyes were puffy, she would soon be Luna and I needed to let the people start seeing her in that light. "Speak," I ordered calmly and she stepped forward, taking her seat right next to me in the seat reserved for the Luna. "Today, we have discovered the tragic loss and murder of

  • Veil Of Destiny   56: Murder in the Palace

Leo's POV I woke up from the dream sweating profusely, Lady Willow had been killed. She was drowning in a pool of her own blood and nothing I did was enough to save her. I knew that she had been working on something, one that she had told me was extremely dangerous. I made up my mind to go and check up on her since Sophia wasn't around too. There was movement coming from Sophia's chambers and I immediately went to check. Her maid Arya had insisted on following her yesterday, shortly after she left so, I was not expecting anyone to be in her chambers. "Who is there?" I bellowed as soon as I got to the door. "Honey, it's me. Come inside" I heard Sophia's voice clearly from inside and knew that it was impossible since I had seen her off myself. I picked up a kitchen knife as I made my way to the figure on the bed. Truly, it was Sophia on the bed. "How?" I asked, clearly puzzled. "I decided to come back, I didn't end up going anymore. You were on my mind all through and I made a las

  • Veil Of Destiny   55: The Search for the Impossible

Sophia's POV I arrived at the coven, my eyes wet with tears as I had missed everyone. They seemed to be in the meeting, a very important one as no one took cognizance of my presence until I cleared my throat. My mother was the first to turn and she ran to me as soon as she saw me, the relief evident in her eyes. "Oh, my darling daughter. We have been so worried about you. There was no way for us to reach you and we were beginning to make plans of coming to the pack" she said and she threw her hands around me, wrapping me in a tight hug.I felt better than I had done in weeks, with Leo watching my every step to ensure that I was fine, there was little or nothing I could do. He assigned another maid to me, to help Arya watch me better so I do not lack anything I needed at all. "We haven't been able to contact you, what happened? Did he find out about your true identity?" She asked. "Not at all mother, but it was close. I almost got caught. The only luck I had was the quick thinking

  • Veil Of Destiny   54: Unending Torture

Alpha Felix's POVI woke up again, my heart searing into pieces. I saw her again, Maria. Her perfect skin was glowing in my dreams, but no. Nightmares. That was it, ever since she left which was just over two months now, I have dreamt about her every night and each time, she has taunted and teased me, each time, calling me weak and a coward. Another time, I had seen Dexter, his insides pouring from him as he made bloody love to her. "You sent for us" my guard announced as I had fallen asleep right on my desk like a commoner. "Did you knock?" I demanded angrily, more of the anger from the dream that kept pointing out my weakness. "Yes. We did so Alpha. We were actually worried that something was wrong." He quickly replied, seeing that I was not in a good mood."That's fine. What is the situation report?" I demanded, not wanting them to read between the lines and tie my distorted emotions to the pregnant woman that I had literally overturned the world to find. "We have searched ever

  • Veil Of Destiny   53: The Galaxies of Confusion

Sophia's POV I made my way to my room, in desperate need of help. His blood had found a way to break my disguise spell. If he found out that I was a witch and not a werewolf like I had always claimed, he would have me executed. That would jeopardize all the plans that my people and I had. My real scent was slowly wafting off and I could feel the stench. My steps got weaker as I got there but then I felt a hand on the small of my back. I nearly collapsed in fear, fearing the worst. I was trying to be careful so that no one else perceived it. I blamed myself for bringing today's ordeal upon me. "It's Arya. The Alpha informed me that you might need help even though I have already sensed it and was on my way to you" she said as we moved quickly to my chambers. "He fed me his blood. It was my fault, I was making a big deal about him not wanting to take the tea I made for soul bonding and held on to the knife. He got cut in one of his fingers, one that he stuck in my mouth. I should hav

  • Veil Of Destiny   52: Miles Apart

Alpha Leo's POV There was something missing, everyday it felt like there was something that was so crucial to me that I couldn't just remember. Having failed to remember anything in two days, I gave up and finished my final meeting with the councilmen. As soon as I got to my room, there was a bottle with a shiny liquid in it and a short note beside it. I didn't pay much attention to it at first, so I went to shower. I bolted my door as I was too restless to entertain anyone, even my beloved Sophia. Picking up the note, it had only a few words scribbled on it. "Drink this before she comes, then burn everything. Do not drink any tea or anything from her. Do not act like you know, keep pretending. The truth is closer to us than we know."The note simply read. I took the potion and drank it all. It felt like there was something churning my stomach as I ran to the bathroom to throw up. Black substance poured from my mouth, disgusting me more. When I was finally done and had managed to c
