Maria's POV

The nightmare was never-ending, my eyes had not closed for a wink throughout the night. Even though I had not been able to move, my mind was everywhere. I couldn't imagine what was going on and how I was going to explain it. Elijah had looked so hurt and broken, even though I didn't want to date him, I definitely didn't want to hurt him in such a way.

Elvira broke the door down a few minutes after dawn. She was looking so distraught, almost like she had just heard the worst news ever. She ran straight to the bedroom first, since I still couldn't move, there was no way I could call her attention to where I lay close to the dining table.

"Maria! Maria! Where are you?" She yelled as she ran across the house.

I heard her tumble down the stairs and my heart wrenched in pain for her. I didn't know what to think, I had to do something. I closed my eyes and willed myself with everything in me to call out her name.

"Elvira..." I managed to gasp. She didn't hear me at first, my

  • Veil Of Destiny   84: Unwilling heart

Elijah's POV My heart didn't even flinch when I had her cast out. She didn't deserve any bit of kindness from me and I even regretted helping her in the first place. She was a liar and she was never worth it. It hurt me worse that Nathan had been the one she chose over me. It didn't go down well with me but I had not set my eyes on him since the whole incident happened. "You are a coward Elijah and I regret ever knowing you and supporting you. I'm leaving! I'm leaving this cursed place for good. You used to be so different, What happened to you? How did you become this person that is so unreachable to reason?" Elvira's sharp voice interrupted my thoughts. I had not even heard her come into my office. She had never snuck up on me before so I knew that she was definitely offended for her to do it this time. I couldn't hold her gaze, it carried so much pain and for a brief moment, I wondered if I had overreacted. She had lied to me, Maria had lied to me. I had every right to react the

  • Veil Of Destiny   82: The Judgement

Elijah's POV My heart was pounding in my chest as I made my way back to the palace. Maria had not been any different and it broke my heart the more that she had done it with the one person that she had denied having any interest in. Her moans, those guttural screams had not seemed natural, she had suddenly lost her speech when she saw that I had come in. The image of her lying down on the floor frozen while Nathan touched her however he wanted was still etched in my brain. He must have thought that I was a fool all this while, protecting what he had full access to. Elizabeth was waiting at the entrance of the palace. "Welcome back. I was worried about you, Where did you go?" She asked me, pulling the robe consciously across her chest. "Why are you worried about me?" I demanded from her, my chest still burning from the betrayal that I had just faced. "Elijah, we are not enemies, are we? I was scared and alone in my room, it was a rainy night." She said and that was when I took not

  • Veil Of Destiny   81: The Tormentor

Maria's POV It felt hazy when I woke up later that evening. Elijah had sent for Elvira earlier, he had mentioned that he had something important that he wanted her to do. I tried my best to cope with the loneliness, considering that I still felt the dull ache of loss. "Hello," I heard Nathan's voice from the door. He had not even bothered to knock this time around. Even though I didn't want to unlock it, I felt the need to rid him of the guilt that he had something to do with the loss of my child. "Hey," I said as I opened the door and stood aside to let him in. "I've been trying to see you," he said quietly as he stood opposite me in the living room. "I forgive you. You don't have to worry." I quickly said, his presence immediately bringing back the memories that I thought I lost. "Friendly hug?" He asked me and opened his arms wide. "Yeah, I guess so," I said, taking a deep breath before I made my way into his arms. He hugged me warmly, his arms offering me a sort of safety

Elijah's POV "You know she told me what you did?" I asked Nathan as he sat opposite me, his eyes looking at me like there was something else going on in his head. "What did she say I did?" He asked me nonchalantly, even though I could see him swallowing nervously and beads of sweat appeared on his head. "You bloody hell know what you did. How could you even think of doing such a thing?" I waved my fingers at him angrily. "There's no reason to be so upset about it, She doesn't really care. I'm sure she is happy to be able to get rid of one of those bas... kids " he corrected himself when I sent him deadly stares. "You shouldn't have done that. You definitely shouldn't. You have no idea what that woman has been through. Nathan, you should not be putting her through all of this." I challenged him, daring him to say anything to counter what I was saying. "She isn't upset. I've told you that she enjoys the attention, I'll find a way to prove it to you, you will see." He said the word

  • Veil Of Destiny   79: The Weight of Loss

Maria's POV It has been two long days, two days of pure agony and heart-wrenching sadness. I could feel a part of me dying slowly like a grass that somehow can't seem to get a touch of the rain. It was heavy, a burden that I had never known its weight before it was cruelly dropped on my shoulders. For one moment in my life, I felt nothing. Just raw sadness and depression. Elvira moved in with me to help me cope as I refused to go to the palace or move in with Elvira. I had initially kicked against having her around but they would not hear of it and insisted that I had to take an option. Nathan has kept his distance and even the mere sight of him annoyed me. Elijah had made sure that he stayed away and Elvira did a good job in telling him that I was indisposed all of the eleven times that he had come to see me in the last two days. "He looks remorseful Maria. I think you should just hear him out, I don't think that he meant for anything bad to happen to you or the baby" Elvira said
