Elara

“What’s going on?”

The champagne flute in my hand crashes to the ground, shattering into pieces all over the polished floor. I felt my legs buckling beneath me as I crashed hard into the floor. I felt my vision spin wildly as I tried to make out what was going on around me.

I tried calling for help, but my throat was choked up. I felt like I couldn’t breathe, like something heavy was crushing my chest and squeezing the life out of me with every second that passed. Panic flooded through me as I gasped uselessly.

“What a sight to behold,” I heard the voice of that insolent worm, Rozetta Pierrepont. “The untouchable campus queen is reduced to nothing but a disgusting wretch,” she cooed at me in that fake sweet voice while others around us laughed like it was the most funniest thing in the world.

“Look at her thinking she is better than us because of her family’s fortune,” I heard my boyfriend Damon Blanton’s voice say, the disgust unable to be hidden in his tone.

“He…lp m…e,” I managed to wheeze out weakly, reaching desperately for his pant leg, hoping he would at least look at me. But the chilling voice of Rozetta answered me instead.

“Now why would we want to do that when we were the ones who…” she said, stepping closer to me deliberate and slow, her body looming over me. “Poisoned you,” she finished, stepping on my hand with the sole of her stilettos, grinding down with all her weight.

“Ahhhhhhhhhh!” I let out a blood-curdling scream, the pain shooting through my entire body like fire. I tried backing away from her, my other hand frantically clawing, trying to push her foot away even as tears clouded my vision.

Pow!

I felt a sting across my left cheek. “How dare you push me!” Rozetta shrieked, yanking a fistful of my hair so hard it felt like she was ripping it from my scalp.

“Baby, don’t stain your hand with trash like her,” Damon said, which made her loosen her grip on me, collapsing into his arms instead.

“You are right, baby,” she said, leaning in to kiss him right there in front of me. “We still have the Voss fortune to enjoy,” she said. I looked at her with hatred anger burning in my chest, the betrayal cutting deeper than any physical pain.

“I sup…ported you,” I wheezed out, staring at Damon with everything I had left. “I used… my fa…mily’s resources to get… you where you are,” I said, staring at him with confusion and pain twisting inside me. “Why? Why, Da…mon?” I asked, my voice barely holding together.

He scoffed at my words. “Please,” he said, stepping closer to me and pulling away from her. “I became the national hockey champion and captain through my own merit,” he said, pressing down on the hand Rozetta had already stepped on, grinding it. the pain intensified even more than before. “The only thing you did was use people and discard them when they were done being useful. Rozetta was the one who supported me,” he said, wrapping his hand around her again.

I didn’t know why, but I started to laugh. Small at first, but then it grew into full-blown laughter. “I cursed the day I met you and helped an ungrateful swine like you,” I said, tears streaming down my face even as I laughed like a lunatic. The betrayal felt like a knife twisting in my heart.

“Tch,” she tsked at me. “Just die already, Elara Voss,” she said, kicking my head hard. I coughed out more blood as my vision grew darker, the echoes of their laughter ringing in my ears. The only sound i heard before darkness took over completely.

“Elara,” I heard someone say my name softly. “Elara,” they repeated. This time, I felt them shaking me gently. I snapped my eyes open, and I was met with blinding lights overhead.

Focusing on the figure in front of me, I was met with the face of Paisley Morrison, my best friend.

“Is this the afterlife?” I asked her, leaning forward to hug her tightly. “It’s so good to see you again, Pai,” I said, crying softly against her as the memories of what happened before I died flooded back.

“What’s going on with you, Elara?” she said with a serious tone, clearly worried.

“I died,” I blurted out, releasing her slowly.

She touched my forehead. “Are you coming down with something?” she said, crossing her arms. “You fell asleep during the game. The guys won, by the way, and Zane texted that they were in the locker room.”

“The game?” I asked incredulously. What game? Was everything that happened all a dream? But it felt so real, the pain, the poison, their laughter, the betrayal.

“We have to go,” Paisley said, linking my arm around hers and lifting me up. “Your boyfriend is waiting,” she said with boredom.

Boyfriend?

She led the way towards the inner part of the building till we were in front of the locker room. Pushing the door aside, we both stepped in. I froze when I saw the two people in front of me.

Damon and Rozetta.

I didn’t know what came over me. I marched up to where she and Damon were and spun Rozetta around, swinging my arm to land a resounding slap.

The entire locker room froze at that.

“Elara, what the fuck,” Damon said, shock wearing off.

I turned to him. “Damon, let’s break up.”

"Paisley I am fine,” I tried to get Paisley off me. The doctor that had checked me said there was nothing wrong, just a minor cut on my forehead from accidentally hitting the ice. He said I would be fine. But Paisley hadn’t let me go since. She strapped herself to me. “What if you fall again?” she said, choking back tears. My heart tugged at her words. “Paisley, we are in a parking lot?” I pointed at where we were and the absurdity of the entire situation. “How am I going to get hurt?” “I don’t know. You are one of the best skaters I know, and even you still slipped on the ice and fell,” she gripped my hand so tightly I felt the blood leave my veins. “It was an accident. The ice was weak,” I protested. I was already tired from everything. “Look Paisley, let’s just go hom—” “Elara,” I heard my name being called. I felt irritated already. “Elara,” the voice called out as they drew closer. “Elara, wasn’t I talking to you?” I felt my shoulder being grabbed hard. I fli

"Are you going to actually get in the rink or just stand?” Paisley called out, drawing me out of my thoughts. “What?” I questioned, watching her glide toward me. “You have been standing by the side ever since we got here,” she stopped in front of me, hand reaching out to feel my forehead. “Do you want to share what's bothering you?” My heart fluttered at her words. I knew if anyone would understand me, it was her. But sadly this was something I needed to bear on my own. I gripped the guard railing, hoisting myself upright. “It's fine, just nonsense,” I smiled at her, but I knew she wasn’t buying it from the frown on her face. “You know a problem shared is a problem solved,” she pushed again, but I knew I couldn't disclose such to her. “It's fine really. It's not something for you to stress over,” I reassured her, even though it was still my problem and mine alone to handle. “Fine, but if you need a listening ear I am always here,” she let out a sigh. I took that a

“Coach, why weren’t they wearing the new jerseys?” I turned to the coach, questioning him instead. This was somebody’s idea. Either Damon convinced them all to wear the old ones, or they just did it because of their undisguised hatred for me. I still remembered in my vision they were all still the same people who stood behind Damon and Rozetta and laughed at me. “Miss, I don’t know what you are talking about,” he answered with a smirk. Just as I thought — he was in on it too. Probably gave them the go-ahead to do as they saw fit. I took out my phone, scrolled until I found what I was looking for, and pointed the screen toward them. “This is the jersey that you were supposed to wear during today’s match,” I raised my voice loud enough for everyone in the entire room to hear. “Why didn’t you wear it?” I asked again. “Maybe there was a delivery issue,” Rozetta answered instead. I was irritated already, and hearing her speak made it even worse. “Shut up,” I hissed at her. “I was

“You know I am kinda of liking the new you,” Paisley teased from the floor with a textbook between her legs. I just raised an eyebrow at her to continue. “This serious version of you,” she clarified. “You are taking your books more seriously now,” she teased, which I just scoffed at. I needed to dominate both my studies and the ice if I wanted to succeed. Revenge is important, but I can’t let history repeat itself. “Shoot, the exhibition match is about to start,” Paisley startled me out of my thoughts. “Are you going to attend? You know, with Damon…” I knew what she was getting at and I just sighed, got up to get dressed. I had bigger things to worry about than that man. “Let’s go, Pai,” was my response before leaving her in my room and heading for my car. I didn’t have the mental energy to deal with this right now. We found seats closer to the rink but a bit further back. I didn’t want Damon to get any stupid ideas from me being here. All teams started walking out as the

I lay down embracing my pillow to my chest, replaying the conversation I had with Kai. If I remembered him correctly from my vision, he was the captain of the Fordnast University hockey team. Paisley already confirmed it. I took out a journal to write down everything. Those visions are my ticket to not ending up how I did. “The same guy who was hailed as the future of hockey and the one to be the next national hockey champion. The same position that leech Damon held. What else did I remember about him? Think. Think.” I thought out loud with my hand tapping on my chin. “Okay, he retired from playing hockey after suffering a career-ending injury during a game with Northridge University, which forced him to retire from hockey completely and focus on his family’s empire, Draven Industries, which soars under his leadership.” “After Draven Industries surpasses Voss Enterprise, it starts to bid on projects against Voss Enterprise, destroying it from the outside while those maggots de

  • Villainess on Ice   Chapter 5

I had spent the entirety of last night reading through everything Dante had sent me, and it was comprehensive. I could only fall asleep in the early hours of this morning. My mind was still foggy, but one thing was clear — I now knew the reason why Rozetta was after revenge. And now I got to work with it to destroy her. I am sure she used her little sob story to wrap Damon around her finger to commit murder and other heinous crimes. I may be evil, the most unkind person, but even I wouldn’t stoop so low as murder — taking someone else’s life. I wonder if she had already let Damon in on her family issue or would it be after Damon already became something for himself. Knowing how protective he is of her, she probably has told him yet, just to wrap him in. Then tell him her sob story when he trusts her. Pathetic. That didn’t mean I wouldn’t do it if push came to shove. If I am pushed toward it, then I just have to make sure I am never put in that position again. “Earth to Ela
