LOGINWe were out of the rink. “Elara,” Paisley called from behind me, pulling her arm free from my grasp.
I turned, facing her. “Yes?” I answered. “What was that all about?” she demanded, crossing her arms. I raised an eyebrow at her. “Last night you broke up with Damon out of nowhere. Then today you are threatening Zane with his doping rumor. It’s like you are a whole different person since you woke up.” “Shouldn’t you be glad?” I scoffed at her words. “I broke up with Damon because I was done playing second fiddle to his charity case sweetheart. And as for Zane, he wanted to be the hero so badly. I just threatened him. Oh, don’t tell me you are sad I threatened your boyfriend,” I cooed at her. “As if,” she grimaced at my words. “I only tolerated him because of you. Now that you and that asshole are done, I can finally block him for good,” she said with a sneer. That made me laugh even more. “Well, since there is nothing tying neither of us to them, let’s forget about them,” I added while laughing. We shared a genuine laugh while heading over to get breakfast. ** After having breakfast with Paisley, I decided to head over to Voss Enterprise to see my father. I needed to deal with the root cause of the family’s downfall in my other life, and that was speaking to Father. I stepped out of my car, tossing my keys over to the valet. I didn’t bother with the receptionist and headed straight for my father’s office on the top floor. Taking the executive elevator, I pressed the button leading to his office. I walked into his office — more like barged in. He was hunched over his paperwork. I took the seat right in front of him. “All that prep school and you still don’t know how to knock before entering a room. Waste of etiquette,” he hissed, raising his head. “What do you want? An increase in your allowance? For me to sponsor another one of your play things?” he pressed. “Would it be so unbelievable that I came here to spend time with you, Father?” I mocked with a smirk on my face. “You are my flesh and blood, Elara, so I know you didn’t come here for that,” he took off his glasses, setting a piercing stare on me. “What do you want?” he demanded. The smirk on my face vanished, replaced by a serious expression. “Fine.” I sat up straight, staring into his cerulean-colored eyes. “I want you to stop your illegal business,” I blurted out. “What illegal business?” he asked, fixing me with a complicated look. “Your illegal betting business,” I hissed. “Your illegal betting business with the league.” I hesitated, seeing something flash through his eyes briefly before disappearing. “Who told you about it?” he whispered. “That’s not what’s important,” I snapped. “What you are doing is illegal — tampering with the games and making sure the team you paid for wins. If this gets out then we are finished. Voss Enterprise is done,” I whispered the last part to myself. “Nobody would know anything if you keep it to yourself. If you shut your mouth our family will still thrive and continue growing,” he growled, hitting his fist on the mahogany table. “You really think those things won’t come out?” I hissed at him. “Of course it won’t come out,” he replied back. “I have worked tirelessly to make sure it stays hidden.” “You have worked tirelessly, huh?” I asked. “Well it’s not enough. If I can know about it then imagine who else can find out? If this information leaks we are finished.” “Then I will handle the mole,” he demanded. “Who told you about it?” I just stood up at his words. With that I walked out of the door with him calling after me. There was no way in hell I was going to go down with him. I needed to find a way to save myself before he pulled me down with him. Rozetta. I reached for my phone and dialed that familiar string of numbers. “Dante, I need every information you can find on Rozetta Pierrepont. Leave nothing unturned.” With that I hung up. I had overlooked an important variable and that was Rozetta. There was no way that girl was as innocent as she made herself seem. I was already worked up from my conversation with Father. I needed to blow off some steam. Maybe some practice would do me some good. I went to the public skating rink, parked my car and got out. There was nobody here. Perfect. I put on my ice skates and began practicing. I practiced and practiced until I could no more. My chest burned as I pushed myself harder, anger fueling every movement. I glided through the ice with ease, performing a crossover to gain speed. Then using a three-turn to change directions, while I used a waltz jump followed by a combination jump and then a layback spin before ending it with a Lutz. Then I finally did it — landing gracefully. Who knew anger would be such a huge motivation. Finally got the hang of that routine I had been practicing for weeks. Kpah. I snapped my head toward where the sound came from. “Who is there?” I yelled into the empty space. “You better come out,” I demanded, walking toward the direction of the noise near where the benches were. But I saw nothing. Hmm, must have been the wind or something. Darn, I had already lost my concentration thanks to that noise. Continuous practicing would be fruitless. At least I got the hang of that move though, so it wasn’t fruitless after all. I guess it’s time to call it a night then."Paisley I am fine,” I tried to get Paisley off me. The doctor that had checked me said there was nothing wrong, just a minor cut on my forehead from accidentally hitting the ice. He said I would be fine. But Paisley hadn’t let me go since. She strapped herself to me. “What if you fall again?” she said, choking back tears. My heart tugged at her words. “Paisley, we are in a parking lot?” I pointed at where we were and the absurdity of the entire situation. “How am I going to get hurt?” “I don’t know. You are one of the best skaters I know, and even you still slipped on the ice and fell,” she gripped my hand so tightly I felt the blood leave my veins. “It was an accident. The ice was weak,” I protested. I was already tired from everything. “Look Paisley, let’s just go hom—” “Elara,” I heard my name being called. I felt irritated already. “Elara,” the voice called out as they drew closer. “Elara, wasn’t I talking to you?” I felt my shoulder being grabbed hard. I fli
"Are you going to actually get in the rink or just stand?” Paisley called out, drawing me out of my thoughts. “What?” I questioned, watching her glide toward me. “You have been standing by the side ever since we got here,” she stopped in front of me, hand reaching out to feel my forehead. “Do you want to share what's bothering you?” My heart fluttered at her words. I knew if anyone would understand me, it was her. But sadly this was something I needed to bear on my own. I gripped the guard railing, hoisting myself upright. “It's fine, just nonsense,” I smiled at her, but I knew she wasn’t buying it from the frown on her face. “You know a problem shared is a problem solved,” she pushed again, but I knew I couldn't disclose such to her. “It's fine really. It's not something for you to stress over,” I reassured her, even though it was still my problem and mine alone to handle. “Fine, but if you need a listening ear I am always here,” she let out a sigh. I took that a
“Coach, why weren’t they wearing the new jerseys?” I turned to the coach, questioning him instead. This was somebody’s idea. Either Damon convinced them all to wear the old ones, or they just did it because of their undisguised hatred for me. I still remembered in my vision they were all still the same people who stood behind Damon and Rozetta and laughed at me. “Miss, I don’t know what you are talking about,” he answered with a smirk. Just as I thought — he was in on it too. Probably gave them the go-ahead to do as they saw fit. I took out my phone, scrolled until I found what I was looking for, and pointed the screen toward them. “This is the jersey that you were supposed to wear during today’s match,” I raised my voice loud enough for everyone in the entire room to hear. “Why didn’t you wear it?” I asked again. “Maybe there was a delivery issue,” Rozetta answered instead. I was irritated already, and hearing her speak made it even worse. “Shut up,” I hissed at her. “I was
“You know I am kinda of liking the new you,” Paisley teased from the floor with a textbook between her legs. I just raised an eyebrow at her to continue. “This serious version of you,” she clarified. “You are taking your books more seriously now,” she teased, which I just scoffed at. I needed to dominate both my studies and the ice if I wanted to succeed. Revenge is important, but I can’t let history repeat itself. “Shoot, the exhibition match is about to start,” Paisley startled me out of my thoughts. “Are you going to attend? You know, with Damon…” I knew what she was getting at and I just sighed, got up to get dressed. I had bigger things to worry about than that man. “Let’s go, Pai,” was my response before leaving her in my room and heading for my car. I didn’t have the mental energy to deal with this right now. We found seats closer to the rink but a bit further back. I didn’t want Damon to get any stupid ideas from me being here. All teams started walking out as the
I lay down embracing my pillow to my chest, replaying the conversation I had with Kai. If I remembered him correctly from my vision, he was the captain of the Fordnast University hockey team. Paisley already confirmed it. I took out a journal to write down everything. Those visions are my ticket to not ending up how I did. “The same guy who was hailed as the future of hockey and the one to be the next national hockey champion. The same position that leech Damon held. What else did I remember about him? Think. Think.” I thought out loud with my hand tapping on my chin. “Okay, he retired from playing hockey after suffering a career-ending injury during a game with Northridge University, which forced him to retire from hockey completely and focus on his family’s empire, Draven Industries, which soars under his leadership.” “After Draven Industries surpasses Voss Enterprise, it starts to bid on projects against Voss Enterprise, destroying it from the outside while those maggots de
I had spent the entirety of last night reading through everything Dante had sent me, and it was comprehensive. I could only fall asleep in the early hours of this morning. My mind was still foggy, but one thing was clear — I now knew the reason why Rozetta was after revenge. And now I got to work with it to destroy her. I am sure she used her little sob story to wrap Damon around her finger to commit murder and other heinous crimes. I may be evil, the most unkind person, but even I wouldn’t stoop so low as murder — taking someone else’s life. I wonder if she had already let Damon in on her family issue or would it be after Damon already became something for himself. Knowing how protective he is of her, she probably has told him yet, just to wrap him in. Then tell him her sob story when he trusts her. Pathetic. That didn’t mean I wouldn’t do it if push came to shove. If I am pushed toward it, then I just have to make sure I am never put in that position again. “Earth to Ela
