ANMELDENIt was already the end of the school day. Finally, I could get some much-deserved rest. My body ached from yesterday's practice, a result of my progress.
“Practice from here, El?” Paisley asked as we stepped outside the lecture hall, headed toward my car. “I don’t know,” I shrugged at her. “I already practiced on my own last night,” I admitted to her, but held off on the real reason. I had other plans today. “Oh… really now. Do I really want to know why?” she said with her arms crossed. I already knew why she said what she said, and the implications of her words made me irritated, changing from my previous emotions. “No, it’s not because—” “Elara!” I heard my name being called, cutting off what I wanted to say. One thing I hated the most was being interrupted. I turned to see Lila Ashworth stomping toward me. What does she want? “What do you want, country bumpkin?” I asked as she got within earshot. I saw her face grow redder with anger. “Elara Voss, I heard about you slapping Rozetta!” she shrieked, hands on her hips. “Who the hell do you think you are? Bullying her because you can.” “You are a clear sign that money doesn’t buy class,” I tsked at her. I wouldn’t be caught dead associating with riff-raff like her. “Tell your charity pauper bestie to stay away from me.” “Elara, I am also from a wealthy family like you!” she bellowed, her shrill voice already grating on my nerves. “I am tired of you treating everybody else like we are beneath you.” “Oh no, I forgot,” I feigned surprise before bursting into a fit of laughter. “I am very aware of your family’s circumstances — wealth bestowed on unfortunate people,” I whispered-yelled with a flip of my hair. Which was the truth — poor people who got the unfortunate luck of getting wealthy. Moving closer toward her, I lowered my voice. “I treat you like you are beneath me because you are beneath me. You think suddenly having money would make a girl from a run-down town stand on the same social level as me? As I said, money doesn’t buy you class nor power.” I signaled to Paisley that we should leave. A pain exploded in my ankle. That hillbilly tripped me. I lost my balance and fell face first. I closed my eyes, bracing for the impact, but it never came. Instead, I opened my eyes and was met with the most beautiful pair of forest green eyes I had ever seen. Attached was the face of the most beautiful man — clear as day troublemaker and heartbreaker written all over him. Miles ahead of Damon in looks. I could stare at him forever. Who am I not to appreciate true beauty? But the coldness in those eyes brought me back to reality. What the hell am I gawking at this stranger for? I literally swore off men, especially pretty boys. His mouth opened. “You don’t need to perform this stunt for my attention,” I heard the words leave his mouth. His voice was deep and husky. Wait, did he just say what I think he said? That I, Elara, would orchestrate a fall for his attention? I must be hearing wrong. “Excuse me?” I asked again. I was too focused on his face to fully process the bullshit that had just left it. “I said you don’t need to get yourself hurt for my attention,” he replied. Who the hell did he think he was? “You think you are hot shit that I would need to risk harming my face for a glance from an obnoxious piece of shit like you?” I shot back. I pushed myself up and dusted myself before walking off to my car after saying those words. I could hear the guys around him snickering. The nerve of this man. Just when I thought he was… forget it, Elara. Learn — you can’t trust men. I needed to get my plans in motion. And for that, I needed to know more about Rozetta. Pulling out my phone, I sent a text to Dante before I started the car. I looked outside and shot Lila a poisonous glare before driving away. I dropped Paisley off at the rink. I didn’t stick around to hear what she had to say. I got inside my room and locked the door, not to be disturbed. I would not let them get to me. I took a nice relaxing shower to calm my nerves, got dressed, and opened the file Dante had already sent. I needed to know more about Rozetta Pierrepont and why she hated me so much. After reading for what felt like hours, the document was filled with nonsensical details. “Ugh, this is useless.” I lay down and scrolled further. “What’s that?” I couldn’t believe it. I read it again. “No wonder her name sounded so familiar,” I whispered to myself in shock. “She is the disgraced coach’s daughter Dad had arrested for selling and prescribing enhancements.” So that’s why she hated me so much, huh? A wicked grin formed on my face. This was going to be fun."Paisley I am fine,” I tried to get Paisley off me. The doctor that had checked me said there was nothing wrong, just a minor cut on my forehead from accidentally hitting the ice. He said I would be fine. But Paisley hadn’t let me go since. She strapped herself to me. “What if you fall again?” she said, choking back tears. My heart tugged at her words. “Paisley, we are in a parking lot?” I pointed at where we were and the absurdity of the entire situation. “How am I going to get hurt?” “I don’t know. You are one of the best skaters I know, and even you still slipped on the ice and fell,” she gripped my hand so tightly I felt the blood leave my veins. “It was an accident. The ice was weak,” I protested. I was already tired from everything. “Look Paisley, let’s just go hom—” “Elara,” I heard my name being called. I felt irritated already. “Elara,” the voice called out as they drew closer. “Elara, wasn’t I talking to you?” I felt my shoulder being grabbed hard. I fli
"Are you going to actually get in the rink or just stand?” Paisley called out, drawing me out of my thoughts. “What?” I questioned, watching her glide toward me. “You have been standing by the side ever since we got here,” she stopped in front of me, hand reaching out to feel my forehead. “Do you want to share what's bothering you?” My heart fluttered at her words. I knew if anyone would understand me, it was her. But sadly this was something I needed to bear on my own. I gripped the guard railing, hoisting myself upright. “It's fine, just nonsense,” I smiled at her, but I knew she wasn’t buying it from the frown on her face. “You know a problem shared is a problem solved,” she pushed again, but I knew I couldn't disclose such to her. “It's fine really. It's not something for you to stress over,” I reassured her, even though it was still my problem and mine alone to handle. “Fine, but if you need a listening ear I am always here,” she let out a sigh. I took that a
“Coach, why weren’t they wearing the new jerseys?” I turned to the coach, questioning him instead. This was somebody’s idea. Either Damon convinced them all to wear the old ones, or they just did it because of their undisguised hatred for me. I still remembered in my vision they were all still the same people who stood behind Damon and Rozetta and laughed at me. “Miss, I don’t know what you are talking about,” he answered with a smirk. Just as I thought — he was in on it too. Probably gave them the go-ahead to do as they saw fit. I took out my phone, scrolled until I found what I was looking for, and pointed the screen toward them. “This is the jersey that you were supposed to wear during today’s match,” I raised my voice loud enough for everyone in the entire room to hear. “Why didn’t you wear it?” I asked again. “Maybe there was a delivery issue,” Rozetta answered instead. I was irritated already, and hearing her speak made it even worse. “Shut up,” I hissed at her. “I was
“You know I am kinda of liking the new you,” Paisley teased from the floor with a textbook between her legs. I just raised an eyebrow at her to continue. “This serious version of you,” she clarified. “You are taking your books more seriously now,” she teased, which I just scoffed at. I needed to dominate both my studies and the ice if I wanted to succeed. Revenge is important, but I can’t let history repeat itself. “Shoot, the exhibition match is about to start,” Paisley startled me out of my thoughts. “Are you going to attend? You know, with Damon…” I knew what she was getting at and I just sighed, got up to get dressed. I had bigger things to worry about than that man. “Let’s go, Pai,” was my response before leaving her in my room and heading for my car. I didn’t have the mental energy to deal with this right now. We found seats closer to the rink but a bit further back. I didn’t want Damon to get any stupid ideas from me being here. All teams started walking out as the
I lay down embracing my pillow to my chest, replaying the conversation I had with Kai. If I remembered him correctly from my vision, he was the captain of the Fordnast University hockey team. Paisley already confirmed it. I took out a journal to write down everything. Those visions are my ticket to not ending up how I did. “The same guy who was hailed as the future of hockey and the one to be the next national hockey champion. The same position that leech Damon held. What else did I remember about him? Think. Think.” I thought out loud with my hand tapping on my chin. “Okay, he retired from playing hockey after suffering a career-ending injury during a game with Northridge University, which forced him to retire from hockey completely and focus on his family’s empire, Draven Industries, which soars under his leadership.” “After Draven Industries surpasses Voss Enterprise, it starts to bid on projects against Voss Enterprise, destroying it from the outside while those maggots de
I had spent the entirety of last night reading through everything Dante had sent me, and it was comprehensive. I could only fall asleep in the early hours of this morning. My mind was still foggy, but one thing was clear — I now knew the reason why Rozetta was after revenge. And now I got to work with it to destroy her. I am sure she used her little sob story to wrap Damon around her finger to commit murder and other heinous crimes. I may be evil, the most unkind person, but even I wouldn’t stoop so low as murder — taking someone else’s life. I wonder if she had already let Damon in on her family issue or would it be after Damon already became something for himself. Knowing how protective he is of her, she probably has told him yet, just to wrap him in. Then tell him her sob story when he trusts her. Pathetic. That didn’t mean I wouldn’t do it if push came to shove. If I am pushed toward it, then I just have to make sure I am never put in that position again. “Earth to Ela
