Chapter 49

Samnom greeted the man jovially.

“Are you the owner?”

“I am,” Samnom replied. “How can I help you?”

The rider stopped and studied Samnom coldly.

“I heard there was a lady here on the property.”

“Used to be,” Samnom lied. He had no idea why he was lying but he thought it was the right thing to do. He had no idea who this man was or what he wanted. “I bought the property from her. She moved on. Did not say where she was going. I wish there was a woman around here though. Gets lonely sometimes.”

The man allowed himself to smile briefly. “I’m sure it does. So you have no idea where the woman went?”

“No. ‘Fraid not. She was rather private and did not volunteer much. I was interested in the property, not a lady at the time so didn’t pay much attention to where she was going.”

The man nodded as he cast his eye over the house. Samnom had express instructions to stay away from the house. Weeds were growing around the house making it look untidy. Not like it would be if a woman lived her
