(Juniper’s P.O.V)
4 years later:
Walking through the halls of my high school, I keep my head down and try and make myself as small as possible. I don’t feel like dealing with people today, not that I ever feel like dealing with people. Particularly teenagers, especially THESE teenagers. After the rogue attack and waking up in the hospital after spending two weeks in a coma, I woke up sounding like I smoked 5 packs a day. All of the doctors my parents had taken me to, all said the same thing, that I would never get my voice back. Even talking with Fae healers, spell casters, and elves nothing could be done. No one could regenerate the cells of the body to fix this, no one had that type of magic. It was ancient magic according to one Fae healer, that only Celestial’s had. So, I’ve basically been silent for the last 4 years, only communicating via sign language or mind link with my family.
The bullying all started about a year after the attack when people began to realize that my voice was going to permanently sound like this. So, they started calling me names and making fun of my voice; saying that I needed to cut back on the cigarettes. They never said these things around adults, but they never miss the chance when we aren’t being watched. I was 12 when I was attacked, and I’m about to turn 16, a few days before the future Alpha King Euan turns 18. Euan and I have always had a special bond, he always protected me from the kids and their teasing. It was the same with my older half-brothers Owen and Marcus. Our father, Royal Beta Killian Shay, had a mate before my mother but she died giving birth to the twins. Owen was older and therefore the future Royal Beta. My mother, Florence, is a Siren and our father’s second chance mate. They met about a year after the twins were born when our father was visiting the Kingdom of Oceri, the sea dweller kingdom, which was governed by my mother’s great Uncle, King Lir. Though, now Queen Charlotte and King William have taken over for him. It wasn’t long after they met that they had me, and then my sister.
SLAM!
Someone rams into my shoulder, sending me reeling into the lockers that I was walking past to get to my first class of the day. Great.
“Well look who it is, it’s chimneyfish!” A Senior says.
Ew, it’s Grant. He’s the star football player for our school and the most popular kid in school. Euan was for the longest time, but he graduated early to start his Alpha King training. I push myself off the lockers, ignoring his favorite nickname for me since everyone knew I was a hybrid—wolf/siren.
“I’m talking to you!”
They always are, trying to get me to actually speak to them, but it never works. I only speak around my family and even then, I don’t like it. I shake my head and start to walk away to my class when a big hand comes down on my shoulder and I’m spun around and slammed back into the lockers. What the fuck is with this kid and lockers? I look up into Grant’s face, he would be handsome if he wasn’t such a prick. He’s about to say something when a loud growl sounds from behind him, it shakes the whole school. We ALL know that growl, that is the growl of a pissed-off Luna Queen. The entire hallway becomes deathly silent and still in her presence.
“I’m going to ask this once, and only once. Why are your hands on my niece?” Luna Queen Morrigan growls out.
“I was just talking to her, Luna Queen.”
“Junie, is that true?” She asks.
“No.” I sign to her.
“Care to elaborate?” She asks me.
“He was bullying me, and I was ignoring him. He didn’t like it and that’s when you got here.” I sign to her in explanation.
“I see. Well, Grant, I’m afraid that my niece has a different story. So, do you want to try that explanation again?”
Grant gulps, and I couldn’t help the small smile that comes across my lips. Luna Queen Morrigan wasn’t really my aunt, but she very much filled that role as a biological aunt would.
“I…I…I was…just…” Grant trails off, knowing that he wouldn’t be able to say anything without getting into trouble.
“Well, since you seem to not be able to give me a satisfactory explanation. Punishment is as follows: detention for the rest of the week, Omega duties for the next month, and you will write an apology letter to Juniper.” She says.
“Yes, Luna Queen.” Grant murmurs.
You can’t argue with the Luna Queen.
“Junie, please come here.” She says to me.
I walk over to her as she dismisses the rest of the hallway back to class, she stares daggers into Grant’s back as he scurries to his first class. She pulls me into her office here in the school and closes the door behind her.
“Has the bullying gotten any better?” She asks.
“Do we really have to talk about this?” I sign.
This conversation annoyed the shit out of me no matter who I talked to about it.
“Yes, we do.”
“No, it has not gotten any better. You know this Auntie Mo.” I sign.
She sighs, “I’m sorry sweetheart. I know this is hard, but you are the strongest young woman I know. You are destined for great things.”
“I’m really not though.” I sign.
After I was able to get some of my voice back, I told my parents, the Royal Gamma Cormac, and the Alpha King and Luna Queen about what the rogue had said. They looked through all of the prophecies that they could find, looking to see if they could find something that mentioned a werewolf/siren hybrid. There were plenty of prophecies about hybrids of my species but, what we found out about me, and my sister was that we were equal parts Siren and wolf. We have both a Siren and a wolf half, which isn’t typical hybrids. There is always a more dominant gene, one that trumps the less dominant gene. There are exceptions to this rule, like Luna Queen Morrigan and her children, she is three equal parts—elf/spell caster/werewolf. Her genes were dominant to Alpha King Rian’s, so all of their children are tribrids. It’s really confusing and messy and annoying to try and figure out, but basically, there were no hybrids mentioned in the prophecies that were equal halves like my sister, Stephanie, and I.
“Do you want me to call your dad or mom?”
“No, I just want to go to class please.” I sign, heaving out a sigh.
Aunt Morrigan just nods her head, as I get up to leave, she grabs my shoulders and pulls me into a motherly hug.
“We love you, Junie, please let us help you.” She whispers, knowing that I keep a majority of the bullying to myself.
There’s just no point in telling an adult or someone in authority about the bullying, it just made it worse when the punishment for the one doing the bullying is over. She lets me go and I nod my head to her, before making my way to my first class of the day—history. Goddess, this day couldn’t be over soon enough.
(Euan’s P.O.V) “Hit!” My dad says. I strike the punching bag in front of me, my chest heaving and sweat dripping down my body. This workout is more intense than the others he has put me through, and I know the reason is that I’m turning 18 in a few days. He and my mother want to retire from the royal life, and once I find my mate, they are going to hand the kingdom over to me. I graduated from high school early, even though I didn’t want to. Graduating early meant that Junie was left open to bullies. They never messed with her while I was around school because I’m the future Alpha King. My twin brothers, Flynn and Rory, are her age but they don’t protect her as I do. “Euan! Mind out of the clouds!” I hear my father yell. “Sorry dad, was just thinking about my birthday is all,” I mumble, lowering myself to the floor. “It’s not your birthday that has you all in your head. I know you better than that.” “It’s just…I’m worried about Junie.” I murmur. Ever sinc
(Juniper’s P.O.V) Hearing Euan calling my name made me relax slightly after the shit show of a day I had, thanks to Grant Howard and his little gang of douche-kabobs. After he got in trouble with Aunt Morrigan, he took it out on me verbally and so did his friends. They knew better than to physically hurt me. Getting into Euan’s car, I’m surrounded by his scent: leather with a hint of cardamom. As much as my parents’ individual scents calm me, his calms me even more than theirs. “So, Queen Junie, your birthday is the day after tomorrow. And as tradition dictates, we are going on an adventure.” Euan says as he pulls out of the school parking lot. I can’t help the smile that comes to my lips because he always treats me like a queen even though we aren’t dating nor are we mates. At least, I don’t think we are mates. “Does that mean you want me to pick our adventure?” I ask, not signing to him. I don’t speak around many people, but Euan is different,
(Euan’s P.O.V) Fucking rogues had to ruin everything, again. I can feel Junie shaking in my arms, my t-shirt was wet from where she had her face buried into my chest. “Calm down baby, we are almost there,” I say, seeing the safe house in front of me. Euan, where are you!? My mother shouts in the mind link. I’m with Juniper, we are right in front of the safe house. I reply as I get to the door. Oh, thank the Goddesses above. She responds. I cut the mind link as I put my thumb on the scanner and the door clicks open, I slip inside before I close the door and bolt it. Juniper’s breathing is coming in short, shallow pants and I know she’s on the verge of having a panic attack. I make my way through the living area and down to the underground bunker where the rest of the pack who aren’t warriors and who can’t shift are. I find a quiet corner and sit on the ground, holding her in my lap. “Breathe Junie, follow my breathing. In. One. Two. Out. One. Two.” I say.
(Juniper’s P.O.V) My dad was carrying me through the pack territory toward our house, and all I could think of was Euan and the way he soothed me today. It’s been a while since I’ve had a panic attack like that, and for him to be able to get me out of it and then ground me. That was incredible. “Are you okay Junie bug?” My dad whispers. “Yes, daddy,” I say out loud since it’s just the two of us. “Good. What were you doing?” “Euan and I were at the lake; he’d taken me there because—” I stopped short of telling him what happened with Grant. “Because? Don’t bother lying to me, Morrigan already told me what happened with that slimy little weasel Grant.” He growls. “Well then, I don’t need to tell you what happened,” I whisper. “Junie, do you want to reconsider being homeschooled? You’ve had to put up with so much that I think you need a break from the other pups and cubs in the kingdom.” “So, tuck tail and hide? I thought I was of Royal Beta blood. Do Royal Beta’s run
(Euan’s P.O.V) Waking up this morning, I couldn’t help the slightly giddy feeling of interrogating my first rogue. That makes me sound like a psycho, but I don’t really care, we needed to get to the bottom of why the rogues are once again coming into the kingdom and targeting our pack. My father had called the packs, werebear sleuths, werecat prides, and dragon dens within the kingdoms, asking if there had been any rogue attacks on them. Only the Alpha’s that border the Rogue Lands stated that they saw rogues crossing into the kingdom, they didn’t want to engage them if there was no threat. These packs and sleuths that border the Rogue Lands were smaller and had fierce warriors, but a battle with rogues would pretty much decimate their people. They had tried calling my father, but he had been in and out of meetings, and the attack happened so quickly that he hadn’t had the chance to check his messages. So, other than those packs and sleuths, no one saw the rogues, which me
(Euan’s P.O.V) After we continue our interrogation of the other rogues, we don’t get any useful information other than they were after Juniper. We walk back to the packhouse to meet Royal Gamma Cormac and his son, Angus, who is my future Royal Gamma. “So, we know they are after Junie, but we don’t know why. Do you think we should get in touch with King Cerberus in Alynthi? See if any of his vampires know anything?” Angus asks. “That’s an excellent idea, Angus.” My father says. He grabs his office phone and dials the number for King Cerberus. “King Cerberus.” “Hey, my sweet little caped cannoli.!” “Rian, I swear on the Moon Goddess that the next time I see you, I will rip out your throat and spit in it.” “Well now, that’s just rude! Here I am, calling to speak with my best friend and this is how I’m treated!?” King Cerberus lets out a long sigh before saying, “What do you need?” “We had another rogue attack yesterday, no one from our pack was harmed bu
(Juniper’s P.O.V) “That’s where you’re wrong, Junie. You’re everything.” Euan says, before kissing the top of my head. I can’t help the way that his statement makes me feel like my high school crush finally sees me. In all honesty, I’ve had a crush on Euan since I was little and the way that he’s looking after me right now, makes the butterflies in my stomach go crazy. I’m cuddling with my crush! I know that we spent the afternoon the other day together but there’s something significant about this moment. Euan and I stay on the platform for a few more minutes before we both climb down and walk back to my house. When we turn the corner to the backyard of my house, I see my parents both pacing back and forth. They hear us coming and both their heads snap up in our direction. “Junie!” My mother cries, running toward me and hugging me tight to her. “We were so worried about you, sweetheart.” I hear my dad say, as he engulfs both me and my mother in a hug. “I’m sorry, I di
(Euan’s P.O.V) Walking home after dropping Juniper off, was one of the most difficult things I’ve done in a long time. For some reason, my mind and heart were telling me to stay, to be with her, and never let her go. My body, however, wasn’t listening and so walking home in silence my mind wanders. The questions play repeatedly as to why the rogues are after Juniper. Why were they singling her out? Tomorrow is her 16th birthday and I hope that, for her birthday, we can provide her with the answers to the questions we all have about the rogues. My sleep that night was punctuated with nightmares of losing Junie, of her attack when she was 12 but instead of surviving—she dies. Shooting up in bed, my chest heaves, and my body is covered in sweat from the nightmares. I look at the clock on my bedside table, it’s barely 5 in the morning. I grab my phone and shoot Juniper a text. Me: Happy birthday my Junie bear. I have a gift for you after school, I’ll be picking you up instea
