Chapter 11:

Dante's Pov

My head was pounding after spending hours going through files and approving paperwork. Everything was just noise, including the board meeting, the threats from the rival company, and the never-ending calls.

I had no desire to hear anyone's voice ever again. All I wanted was peace. Quiet. Sleep and a cold glass of whiskey. All I needed was that.

I kept thinking about her as I drove home. Kayla

I couldn't stop thinking about the girl who asked me a question this morning

Chapter 21: Kayla povI had no idea that I would wake up with a pounding headache, stand in front of Dante with Kinsey at my side, and declare war on him as if we were on a battlefield.I was hardly able to open my eyes completely, and now this?I intervened before things got worse: "Kinsey, just stop. "No," she yelled as my voice sounded tired and hoarse. However, I gently grabbed her wrist and pulled her along before she could finish whatever dramatic speech she had planned. We strolled silently to my room. After we entered, I shut the door and faced her.You didn't need to do that, Kinsey. Her eyebrows went up. Is that how you say hello to your closest friend who traveled far to see how you're doing?I gave a blink. No, I didn't mean that.I then pulled her into an embrace without giving it any thought. She gave me a tight hug in return, as if she hadn't seen me in a long time."I'm not sorry for what I did," she said, looking me in the eyes when we finally let go. Just so you are

Chapter 20I stopped and looked into her face."You're human, Dante," I muttered to myself. That's all.Humans simply act in this way. I completed taking off her heels. That's when I noticed it.Her dress had a rip. Most likely because I grabbed her too forcefully. She had a bare shoulder. Her chest was almost bare.I quickly averted my gaze.No. That wasn't what I was doing. That man was not going to be me.I grabbed the blanket and pulled it over her, completely enveloping her. I wouldn't dress her differently. I was not interested in seeing her body. Not for any fucking reason. She abruptly moved and grabbed my hand as I was adjusting the blanket."Please.. stay with me," she whispered, her fingers tiny and cold. "I missed you.I froze. My throat constricted.Who do you miss? Bitterly, I thought. She's having a dream. Talking in bed. Who in the world is she missing? I didn't retreat, though. I simply stayed.Just a few seconds.I glanced at her during those brief moments. looked r

Chapter 19: Dante's PovThe celebration was coming to an end.Individuals were departing. Some are too inebriated to walk properly. Some were acting as though they weren't exhausted.Jake texted me while I was standing close to the exit, looking through my phone: "I'm home with Tiana." In case you're trying to find me. I didn't respond.Since our earlier altercation, I hadn't seen Kayla. To be honest, I didn't give a damn.I kept telling myself that, at least. She was unable to remain motionless.constantly seeking attention. It was flirting with someone else if it wasn't giving hugs to strangers. She attracted a lot of trouble. My spouse. No, at that moment, I didn't even want to refer to her as such.Nevertheless, my thumb lingered over Jake's's name. Before I knew it, I was typing."Are you with Kayla?"No," was his prompt response. She was at the party when I left her.I took a moment to look at the screen.I asked, but why?Why did I give a damn? However, something changed in my

Chapter 18: Jake's PovThe volume of the music was high. The champagne was good. The business conversation? As usual, boring.I gave the men around me a courteous nod. They talked endlessly about expansion, mergers, and contracts. I had heard the same speech at twelve different gatherings. Then I noticed Kayla in the corner as my gaze strayed. She had a drink. She drank one glass, then another. Her hand was moving too fast. She cocked her head too far back. She wasn't drinking. She was attempting to forget.I stopped paying attention to the discussion. I was already distracted when one of the men spoke to me. "Pardon me," I muttered, "I'll be right back." Just a moment. After placing my glass on the table, I turned to leave. Even though I was walking steadily, I had an odd pull inside. As if something was going to go wrong. She didn't even anticipate my arrival. She was lost in her own world. Her body swayed slightly in time with the music, her eyes glazed. She appeared wounded. Wear

Chapter 17 Alone. Useless. Out of place.I started walking. No realdirectíon. Just away from the noise.Away from the judgment I imaginedbehind every stare.I moved to a more peaceful corner and let out a slow breath. I heard my name at that point. "Kayla?”I briefly blinked as if I were seeing a ghost. "Augustine? I muttered. His expression brightened. "Oh my God, Kayla! Why are you in this place?I laughed breathlessly. "Why am I in this place?"You look so pretty," he said, surveying me with wide eyes. To be honest, I wasn't sure it was you. I was shocked to learn about the wedding when I returned to town. Are you and Dante married?I gave a feeble nod. "Yes, I didn't plan it either. I lost everything, including your number."He came forward and gave me a strong hug after saying, "I'm so happy to see you."It was warm. Safe and familiar. It was only then that I realized how cold I had been feeling. But just as quickly, it ended."What the hell is going on here?"a voice thunder

Chapter 16: Kayla's povIt was a quiet drive to the party location. The kind of quiet that clings to your skin and amplifies your thoughts. Killian was seated next to me. Nolan and Zoey were in the vehicle directly behind us. I still felt like I was by myself.Dante didn't even look at me.His fingers were scrolling through his phone while his eyes were fixed on it, as if he had more pressing matters to attend to than sharing my air. From the corner of my eye, I glanced at him. He was perusing some papers.Even now? Are you still employed? When does this man not work, God?There was a long period of silence. The awkwardness was suffocating. I began to wish Tiana was with me instead at that point. I would have someone to talk to, at least. Someone who didn't treat me like a mistake that he had to deal with.I looked out the window after turning my head. As we passed, the city lights turned into streaks of gold and silver. I made an effort to lose myself in it.The vehicle then decele
