LOGINERIC:
The confidence I saw in Erica vanished the moment she announced Leonard’s arrival. It wasn’t fear, exactly—I couldn’t tell what it was—but she was instantly on her feet, legs jittering beneath her. “How did he find me?” she muttered, pacing frantically across the living room. “Are we in trouble?” I asked. I had no clue why she was trembling like that. Sure, she had told us stories about Leonard; how proud, cold, and emotionally scarce he was. Nothing new. The entire country knew Leonard Hays was made of ice and ego. Pride was practically tattooed on his forehead. But nothing she had said ever suggested he was dangerous. Overbearing, yes. Unlovable, maybe. But scary enough to turn Erica into a frightened chicken? That didn’t add up. “He’s not supposed to be here,” she muttered, almost to herself. Then, suddenly, she glanced at her phone, and whatever she saw sent her spiralling deeper into panic. “Shît…shît…shît!” she repeated, spinning circles in the living room while I stood there turning with her, dizzy from her meltdown. “How did I forget that?!” she roared. “Erica,” Lucas cut in, firm and calm. “Leonard’s already here. We should be figuring out what to do before he knocks on my door.” As if summoned by fate, a knock came, hard, steady, impatient. I immediately ducked behind Lucas. Truth, I wasn’t scared at first. But somehow, Erica’s fear crept under my skin and infected me until I could feel every nerve of it. And just like that… Erica, the same person who passed her fear onto me, became completely fearless. “Eric,” she said, stepping closer, “this is it. This is where the plan begins.” “What plan?” “Come on, Eric,” Lucas said, stepping aside and exposing me. “Time for the big Erica transformation.” “Now?” “Yes.” “No rehearsal?” Another knock landed, this time louder and more aggressive, and I gasped. This one didn’t come from Erica’s fear in me; it was mine. I stood frozen, paralysed. Erica grabbed my hand and pulled me along. “Stall him,” she ordered Lucas. “Make up something. Just keep him talking.” Inside my temporary room, Erica tore through the wardrobe and shoved a dress into my arms. A wig matching her curly long hair. Smart makeover. Within seconds, she transformed me into my female counterpart. Honestly, I didn’t need her help to look prettier than her, but hey…she was the director of the circus. She did a final rundown of everything I needed to remember about Leonard. Names, history, emotional triggers. Then she gave me a light push, and out I went… straight into the fire. Leonard was already seated on the couch, legs crossed, arms spread along the backrest like he owned the world. Lucas stood nearby, stiff, like a man being interrogated. The moment Leonard saw me, he tilted his head slowly. Our eyes met, and in one swift move, he rose and marched toward me in all his aura. Hands in pockets. Leonard Hays. A walking definition of “don’t believe what you see online.” Because why would all those broke paparazzi take such lazy photos of him? And the cheap bloggers describe him so lamely. Leonard wasn’t just handsome. He was dripping hot. And how come no one ever mentioned the way he walked… like a king, like thunder wrapped in silk. No camera ever caught those deep, obsidian eyes that looked like they could burn you alive in bed. And he’s not 6’1”. He is a fvcking 6’4”. My dream height. Everyone’s ideal partner height. “Is this you running away from me,” he said, voice like velvet over steel, “or running to your spare boyfriend?” Jesus. Why didn’t Erica say his voice sounds like John Hurt dipped in whiskey? “I don’t have a boyfriend,” I said, voice squeaky, barely a whisper. “Erica?!” Lucas barked. Shît! I broke character. ‘I don’t have a boyfriend?’ Brilliant, Eric. Perfect idiot! “Thanks to you, Nathan is now a memory,” I said quickly, hoping to cover the slip. Erica had said Leonard knew about Nathan. In fact, he gloats to see him keeping his distance from her. He enjoyed watching Nathan suffer from the sidelines while she pushed for their relationship. Don’t be surprised now, Nathan and Erica work for Leonard. Quick backstory: Nathan’s father used to work for Mr. Philip Hays, Leonard’s father, as a chauffeur. Even after Mr. Philip passed, the family stayed in the Hays mansion. Nathan now works for Leonard as a technical consultant. Erica could’ve chosen any other job. She could’ve worked for her father, started a business. But she chose the Hays just to be close to Nathan. Her worst decision. Her greatest regret. If she hadn’t followed Nathan there, Juana wouldn’t have noticed Leonard. She’d still be trying to marry Erica off, but probably not to a man Nathan was too afraid to challenge, or run away with her from. “Then what are you doing in Panila, in another loser’s house?” Leonard asked, staring me down. “Loser?” I echoed, heat flaring through me. Character, forgotten. Screw the plan. Screw how gorgeous he was. “How dare you call my best friend a loser?” I snapped. “Who’s the loser—Lucas, who welcomed a woman in distress, or the fool who put her in distress? Losers move a wedding date like it’s their civic right. Only a loser would track a woman’s phone, stalking her into a hole like some creep!” I saw Lucas bury his face behind Leonard, and I didn’t need to enter the room to know Erica was now having a panic attack. I’d blown it. The act. The mission. Everything. Leonard didn’t say a word. Just stared, eyebrows raised, eyes unreadable. Then, calmly, he asked, “Were you that disappointed I couldn’t make it to our wedding?” Lucas's hands slowly lowered from his face. “When did your feelings change?” Leonard added. “What?” “No? I guess not,” he said, slipping his hands from his pockets. Before I could think, he gripped my wrist and tugged me toward the door. “What are you doing? Where are you taking me?” “Home, Erica. And don’t test my patience any further.” Home? Now? Erica didn’t include that in the play. She didn’t fvcking say I’d be leaving with Leonard Hays right away!LEONARD: Dropping my jacket on another couch, I sat on the glass table in front of Eric, taking in his radiant face. It was still unbelievable how a man could be so beautiful. With naturally carved-sleek eyebrows, long lashes, full lips, and flawless cheeks…Eric could easily pass a woman. He did, clearly. Even as I had witnessed the thing between his legs, I still swore to myself that he was a woman. When I thought of it, Bernard was the one who had fallen for the wrong gender. He was the gay one, not me. Because all I did was fall for the woman in front of me, while he fell for a woman… claiming she was a man. Okay. I’m also becoming senseless. I lifted my hand to his hair, brushing the fallen strands from his face. Though he kept it short, it was still long enough to give him a feminine edge. He shifted at my touch, stretching and parting his lips slightly. The attraction came at once. The force—that pull to those lips…magnetised my reasoning. Before I could stop myself, I lea
LEONARD: ‘Explain things to Bernard?’ Eric thinks talking to Bernard would be cheap? And what exactly does he intend to say? Ask him to forget all they had because he is in love with his friend? Has Eric always been a dummy, or is he refusing to see the mess he’s made? He’s pulled Bernard and me into a suffocating triangle, forcing us to meet each other with racing hearts for the first time. I arrived at Vinelight first, as I wanted. Ordered food I knew neither Bernard nor I would touch. He wouldn’t have the appetite, and me…I wouldn’t dare fill up the space that was meant for the food waiting for me in the office. Exactly. I would be claiming that lunchbox as soon as I get back. Bernard slid into the chair opposite me, clearly avoiding my eyes. “You don’t look good, man,” I said. He looked worse than Eric. I had never seen him like this—It was disturbing. “And you’re healthy,” he shot back. “I suppose the whole backstab was meant for me.” “Don’t be sassy.” “I look like a w
LEONARD: The instruction was to grant his requests, but not let him leave the hotel. I didn’t want him out, not only to protect him from hungry reporters but to prevent this exact kind of collapse: him pulling me into a whirlpool of anxiety and shock. My hotel management would pay for putting me in this state of helplessness and breathlessness. “Should I let him in?” Tracey asked. He was already inside, slipping his cap from his head. Eric stood behind Tracey, and even as I looked past her, she hadn’t noticed. I couldn’t blame her. Eric looked like a walking ghost. With his dull eyes, pale lips and a too-thin frame, he was hardly visible. He wore a full male outfit—simple, casual—but disarmingly beautiful: a soft linen shirt with sleeves slightly rolled. The fabric clung just enough to hint at his slender body without flaunting it. Nothing about him screamed for attention, yet I found him seductive. Even the slim leather bracelet at his wrist seemed to whisper something persona
LEONARD: Bernard slipped away to his bedroom without us noticing. By the time Jimmy and I finished outlining how the investigation would begin, Bernard was already gone. It was better that way. I still hadn’t decided how to process everything about him and Eric, and I knew he was struggling too. It was best that we take our time in approaching that chapter. Jimmy, on the other hand, provided a perfect lead. He said Erica had met a woman during their trip. Something about the woman seemed off—he couldn’t place it, but with the chaos unravelling now, he believed she was the right place to start. “You should go back to Panila,” I said. The company trip had covered several cities in the country, Panila included. That was where Erica met the woman—and also where I’d taken Eric from. Panila was the hole worth digging. Jimmy drove me home, then went off to prepare for what would be a long investigation. The reporters had finally cleared from my gates. But online clips showed that they
LEONARD: I pulled up to the building, rode the elevator, and knocked as if I’d rented the whole apartment for Eric and his crew. I knew Erica would be inside…she’d have left the office with Jimmy the moment news about our wedding escalated, except she had come straight to this crib. The nerd opened the door and immediately slumped to the floor in shock. This is worse than I thought—he urgently needs rejuvenation. It’s becoming abnormal for a man to be so fragile. I wasn’t wrong. Erica stood behind the couch, taking in the scene with a shaky body. “Eric!” I called into the room, ignoring both of them. “Eric!” A door creaked, and Eric stepped out. He was still in the gown, eyes puffy, skinnier than he had been minutes ago. He looked pale, like he could collapse at any moment. My heart constricted at the sight. Yet, I coldly crossed the room to him. His eyes found mine. He opened his mouth to speak, closed it again. I hesitated, wondering whether to ask if he needed time to grab a
LEONARD: I couldn’t believe I was willing to hear him out. Maybe I needed a conviction. Except I wasn’t sure why. Because no matter what he said, it wouldn’t make him a real woman. I still wouldn’t own him. “Talk then,” I repeated when he said nothing but sob. “I didn’t mean to lie to you. To deceive you. It was a callous thing to do. I’m sorry.” “That’s it?” I asked after a few seconds of silence. “I…” He clasped his fingers together. “I was supposed to disappear before you found out about us. You weren’t meant to know. But the mission kept taking wild turns, forcing me to stay.” “What mission?” “About Erica and me. About our birth history.” “What about it?” “We…are biologically related.” Shit. They’re twins. Identically created. Not that I hadn’t suspected Lucia might be Erica’s sibling…but hearing it confirmed still disappointed me. I truly disliked the Gerux family. And now that I… Wait. What? What the hell was that impossible thought? “Leonard…” “What’s your name?”
