CHAPTER 5: THE GALA & THE THREAT

last update Last Updated: 2025-09-14 01:52:41

ATHENA'S POV

“You can glare at me all you want,” Xander says while he fastens the final button of his tuxedo.

“You’re still coming.”

I fold my arms, planting my feet firmly on the expensively tiled floor.

“You forced me to move into your house. Now you’re parading me around like a trophy? Not happening.”

His eyes move toward me, “You’re carrying my child, Athena. You’re already part of my world, whether you like it or not.”

I scoff. “Your world of entitled billionaires and gold-digging socialites? No thanks.”

He can keep repeating the 'you are carrying my child' phrase all he likes.

Xander’s lips twitch as if he has read my mind then he says, “You might want to work on that attitude before we get there.”

I roll my eyes. “And you might want to work on not being a controlling bastard.”

Surprisingly the man smirks “Charming.”

---

By the time we arrive at the Sterling Foundation Charity Gala, I already regret every decision that led me here.

The venue is dazzling, beautiful, wonderous like it came out of a person's fairytale dream of luxury.

There are glass chandeliers, marble floors, and waiters walking rather professionally across the room with trays of champagne.

There's even a buffet table with all sorts of snacks and let me not even talk about how everyone here looks like.

This place smells of wealth and power, the kind I have no business being around and somehow... everyone here knows it.

Women in their designer gowns send me wild glares and dismissively one overs; they don't even bother hiding their expressions at all.

Frankly, they're all looking at me like I'm the one that should go find somewhere and hide.

And even the men here, in all sorts of two piece and three piece suits, give me assessing looks, though I can't figure out what it is exactly that they think about me.

I shift uncomfortably in my floor-length gown, feeling the silk hugging my body.

I had looked at myself in the mirror before coming out so I know that the dress fitted me,... too perfectly that I almost didn't recognise my own body.

Xander, of course was the one that had insisted that I wear the dress, along with the diamond bracelet around my wrist.

I hate how effortlessly I almost look like I belong here— when I absolutely do not.

I say almost because I don't think I fully look the part of 'the rich' especially with the kind of looks I've been getting since we arrived.

Xander’s grip on my waist tightens and he leans down. “Smile, sweetheart.”

My jaw clenches and I hold myself from giving him a glare. “I hate you.”

He chuckles under his breath, “You’ll live.” he says like he's very sure about what he said but I'm not so sure about that.

Just then I start to hear the murmurs start around me almost immediately.

“Is she his mistress?”

“I heard she trapped him with a baby.”

“Gold digger. Typical.”

The insults felt like hot iron and yet like an operating knife I used in the hospital and I honestly wonder why they won't just come to me and say all that to my face.

Xander, remains calm, quiet and not disturbed at all, like he is immune to the stares around.

I, on the other hand, feel like I’m suffocating.

I need air.

-----------

I slip away the moment Xander is distracted with a 'business interest', and I walk through the crowd until I find an empty corridor somewhere some feet away from the main hall room where the Gala is being held.

I know I could get lost if I go any further away so I just stand, brace my hands against the wall and breathe in as deeply as I can, trying to get myself together.

Coming here was a mistake, I never should have agreed to this.

Why did he even bring me here? We're not a couple, we're not business partners and we're not related by blood.

Ooooh, of course, how can I forget the main part here... We're related by SPERM.

SPERM for goodness sake!

I take in a breath; if I'm going to be with him and attend parties such as this throughout my pregnancy term then I might just die.

A part of me suddenly remembers that I'll give birth eventually... So what on earth is going to happen to my child.

I heave, wrapping my left hand around my flat stomach.

I may not have planned for things to happen this way but this child is mine, I will not let go of my baby.

My head keep on swimming with thoughts, changing from one gear to the other and after a while of breathing in and out like I once learnt some years back in yoga class, I finally get myself.

Then just as I’m about to turn back, a voice catches my attention and because I think I know the voice from somewhere, I glance around the corner, and then spot Veronica.

Her perfectly styled blonde hair is glistening under the shining lights from the very high... ceiling.

Her hands are raised up and when I look closely, I realise that she's just on the phone with someone.

Deciding it's none of my business what goes on on her life, I turn to go but end up catching her last words and almost stumble.

“I don’t care what you have to do,” she hisses.

“Get rid of her and the baby.”

All that air I managed to get into my system to calm myself down just leaves my lungs in a rush like I was just punched in the gut.

I must’ve heard that wrong... right?

Right?????

She couldn't possibly be talking about me.

But then her next words make my entire body go numb.

“Make it look like an accident, she works in a hospital anyway, there's plenty of opportunities there to kill her.”

"Either way," she continues.

“I don’t want it traced back to me.”

ATHENA'S POVI didn’t expect to cry immediately; I’m not a dramatic weeper, I like to think my tears are only for my pillow to see. ... But they fall down my eyes anyway while I laugh and cover my mouth, and then drop my hand.“Yes,” I tell him. “Yes, Xander. Yes.”Relief washes over his face so visibly and he lets out a breath then laughs. His hands shake when he takes mine----- which is ridiculous because he signs billion dollar papers with does hands----- and he slides the ring onto my finger, fitting me just perfectly. Finally he stands back up, and I am on my feet half a second later when his hands come to my face, pulling me into a kiss while my hands curl at the back of his neck.... Actually I think even the babies feel the kiss right now."I love you," he whispers.“I love you.”He smiles then, kissing all over my face like I'd just told him something exciting.-------------------Eventually we sit down on the cushion, and he tucks the blanket around my legs then slides do

  • WRONGFULLY HIS   CHAPTER 28: A REAL PROPOSAL

ATHENA'S POVWeeks pass and... I don’t know when I started living and breathing... differently in this penthouse.I've stopped feeling like I'm in a cage, and Xander...... Xander is just sweet. My room isn't locked from outside anymore and guards don't stay by my door side anymore, instead they stay at a 'respectable' distance------ as Xander calls it.Thinking about his confession just weeks ago make me blush.Believe me when I say we still argue from time to time, but at least it's for trivial things like baby clothes. You see on Monday this week, we check out the gender of our babies, and found out that we're expecting boys.Once we were out of the hospital, Xander insisted on taking 'us' shopping; but that's not the problem. The issue started when he began threatening to fire the clerk if he didn't get him baby suits.BABY SUITS!What kind of babies wear suits?!!I asked Xander that, but he said his kids.Urgh, sometimes I wonder where that man's reasoning comes from.... But I l

We have a situation.”"Later," I tell him and head to the kitchen.Athena would love it if I show up with pickles along with the flowers."No, Sir, wait." The man calls out to me just as I walk right in to the kitchen. Then I pause, startled by the sight in front of me.There in the kitchen, there's a chef’s knife on the floor, and Veronica sprawled on the tiles with one hand just under her cheek while blood seeps out of her forehead.Water is spilt over the marble Island and soapy foam is also on the floor."Where's my fiancé," I growl at the guard, turning and gripping him by the scruff of his shirt.Athena's heavily pregnant; if Veronica could be in this state then-----Panic hits me hard, and I slam the guard to the door again, not even realising when I'd slammed him to it the first time."Where is she?""She's... she's..." He struggles to answer."WHERE?""In

  • WRONGFULLY HIS   CHAPTER 26: POWER SHIFT AND… CHECKMATE

XANDER'S POVThe elevator to my father’s private floor is rather silent except for the occasional buzz of electricity. When the doors slide open, I walk over to his office while holding the black leather dossier in my hand.... And I find Richard, standing at the window, with his hands behind his back."You’re early,” he says without turning to look at me.Ignoring him, I step forward and drop the dossier onto his desk. “What’s this?” he asks, narrowing his eyes at it.However I don't reply him, and so he reaches his hands out and flips the cover... page after page. And what he sees are receipts and photocopies of offshore accounts, shell corporations, political wire transfers and... hell, the entire rotten architecture of his empire. Suddenly he looks up, with his mouth set in a hard line. “You’ve been busy.”“I hired the best forensic accountants in the country,” I reply. “They worked through the night. And if I make just one phone call, all these goes to the SEC, internation

  • WRONGFULLY HIS   CHAPTER 25: DIGGING UP THE DIRT

XANDER'S POVIt’s after midnight and the city below glitters like a tiny circuit board through the penthouse windows. From here, I can see every blinking light, every shadowed alley, but not the rot I want to get rid of from my own family.I lean over the desk with my phone pressed to my ear, “I don’t care how much it costs.” “I want every account, wire transfer and every shell company Richard Elias Knight has touched in the last forty years found out. Leave nothing out; offshore, domestic, political… find all of it.”There's a pause, then a female voice answers, “We are already assembling a team of forensic accountants Sir. We’ll dig thoroughly.”“Good,” I murmur. “And the private investigators?”“They’re with us, they know this is high priority.”I end the call then and stare at the skyline from through the windows. -----------------I find Athena in the penthouse kitchen, wearing one of my shirts and a wary look on her face. “You didn’t come to bed,” she says softly.“Couldn’t

  • WRONGFULLY HIS   CHAPTER 24: THE BILLIONAIRE’S WEIRDEST TASK YET

XANDER’S POVI’ve negotiated billion- dollar deals at dawn, dissolved empires with a single call, and buried rivals without ever needing to lift a damn finger.... But nothing------ and I mean nothing------ has prepared me for the absolute insanity of a hormonal, pregnant Athena. It’s 3:07 a.m, and I’m standing in my penthouse kitchen in a black hoodie and sweatpants, watching my personal chef, Gustavo, tremble as he carefully prepares what can only be described as a culinary blasphemy of the worst kind. How on earth can she want to eat that?“She said she wants the peanut butter swirl on the jalapeño- flavored ice cream,” I mutter, pacing back and forth behind him.“Si, Señor Knight, I am trying,” Gustavo whispers, his forehead now coated in sweat.“And the pickles?” I ask, eyeing the counter. “She said they have to be chilled------ not cold, chilled------ and they need to be snappy, not soggy.”Gustavo nods vigorously. “The pickles are from a German barrel batch, flown in last week
