2. The Adair's

The next morning, Jane started her day with a usual cup of black coffee sitting on the couch while she read the pile of papers from the report given to them by the evidence and forensic department regarding the case. She yawned and leaned her back at the chair, inhaling the aroma of black coffee, and glance at the man walking down the stairs looking at her with a frowning face, wrinkles on his head, she averted her gaze back to the paper she was reading.

"Jane, where's your mother?" he asked Jane. She only look at him like he was growing to heads and why on Earth was he asking for her mother when they're sleeping in one room.

"I don't know and why would I care?" Jane responded, glaring at the old man's question thinking it's absurd to ask her about her whereabouts and besides Flora Adair, her mother was a busy woman though she's head over heels over Marcos. She would never forget her responsibilities to the Adair family after their father died, but being married to that old bastard is not ideal for them. The old man hissed and walk towards the door past her, glancing at what she was doing, shaking his head. Jane is shaking her head thinking where's her Mother gone this time.

"Sister," a sweet voice called Jane. She knew who it was, no other than her twin sister.

"What do you need Lane," she asked in a stern voice, and can’t help but roll her eyes. The ticking of Lane's heels filled the room while she walked towards her direction sitting on the vacant seat in front of Jane, clasping her hands in her lap and leaned her chin in it looking at her twin sister with her perfect shape almond eyes, puckering her lips.

"I know that look Lane, enough with your exchange identity favors." she glared at her removing her eyeglasses and put them above the table, crossing her arms in her chest, watching her twin sister pout her lips as Lane got rejected with her inaudible request.

"Come on! You know Mom, she's forcing me to marry that Becket guy, and I know he has his eyes set on you, not me," Lane sighed as she said leaning on the chair looking at her twin sister with her puppy dog-looking face, trying to charm her but Jane just clicks her tongue, rolling her eyes at Lane's request.

"No, that's final," she said in a serious voice, making Lane sigh heavily.

Jane and Lane are Adair's clan successors, the next in line to run their business but none of them wanted the wealth of their father, especially now that it's been three years since their father died and blaming their mother for what happened and they hated the guts that she married Marcos, they heard he's her boyfriend before her mother was married their father, Reynolfo Adair a great and sweet man who they adored so much, they oath to never forget and abandon the memories that their father left them and not even that bastard who their mother married a year ago and the man had the guts to live here to the house of their father, did her mother lost its sense for letting that man in here? Jane could not help but become irritated by her mother's act.

"Oh! Shit! he's calling me," Lane exclaimed as she looks at her phone, clearing her throat before answering the phone call. "Hello, my friend," She said, looking at her twin sister who was glaring at her, with a frown visible on her face, Lane pouted her lips as she teased her twin sister. "You want to talk to her?" She whispered in a teasing voice reaching her hand at Jane and laugh at Jane who is whispering no, avoiding Lane's hands.

"Oh, no problem, here is Jane," she said and finally handed her the phone, glaring at her twin sister's smirking face.

"Hello," a sound of bored tone came out of her mouth when she answered the phone. If Lane was not blood-related, she must have kicked her ass at this moment of what she did to her or throw the phone to her face.

"What do you want, Becket?" she said and kick her sister's knee, making the other one frown as she caress the one Jane hit.

"Ow! that hurts!" Lane yelped and darted a sharp look at her. Jane clicked her tongue and stood up from her chair, walk a little facing the huge glass of the window, from where she's standing she can see their stepfather ordering the maids on what to do as a white car entered the gates of the mansion, she then heard the clicking on Lane's heels approaching towards her direction.

"Okay, I'll be there," she answered and ended the call, handing the phone back to her sister's hand and cross her arms in front of her chest as Lane stood beside her.

"Is that Mother?" Lane asked pertaining to the car who was maneuvering to park at the mansion's parking space, she shrugged her shoulders by the look of the car, she knew it was not their mother and her gaze darted to their stepfather—grinning, a smile telling Jane the man know the person inside the car who was waiting for the car's door to open.

"Wait, is that Tita Amor?" her twin whispered beside her. Jane's face formed into a frown as they watched how their stepfather hugged the old woman with a smile on his face.

"That bitch again," Lane whispered with animosity, clicking her tongue. Jane turned around and walked toward the stairs behind them.

"Where are you going?" Lane asked as she turned around to look at her twin, eyes full of wonder. Jane stopped and took a glance at her twin sister. "I don't want drama sis, so, I will go to work," she said and look at where she's going again. Lane clicked her tongue and diverted her eyes again on the window, she watched as their stepfather guided the old woman towards the coffee house, she shakes her head and flips her hair when she heard her phone beeped.

"What?" she said after answering her phone, she glance at the gates and then to where her sister Jane headed. "Okay, I'll be there in a few minutes," she answered with a smirk on her face and ended the call, with her red silk dress and killer heels, long straight blonde hair, and dark red lipstick she looks like she's ready for a party but it's not just an ordinary party. A grin set on her lips, eyes glimmer, and walk towards the stairs, making her way to her twin's bedroom.

She knocked at Jane's door and within a second the door opened revealing Jane in her usual black outfit, by black, she means a pair of boots, with her leather jacket and pants, matched with the white sleeveless V-neck under her black jacket almost showing her cleavage. "Deary," Lane said in a sing-song tone, calling Jane's attention and she never fails, Jane glance at her while she wears her ballcap and glance at herself in the mirror for the last time, grabs the keys of her car.

"What?" Jane answered thinking if what does her bratty twin sister was going to ask this time, Jane stood straight facing her twin sister, one of her eyebrows arched upward while her hand was placed on her waist waiting for Lane to spit her request or whatever she's thinking this time as she pocketed the keys of her car in her leather jacket.

"Are you going to their party?" Lane inquired, leaning against her back, the left door frame of the room.

Jane sighed heavily for she had no choice after all, and her twin knew about it. She gave Lane a nod. One thing, Becket was one of her friends too and their family is part of their circle of families before and up to now. Also, Becket's family served their family for generations and they've known each other since they're kids. If Jane won’t be there, she was sure it will upset Becket, and she does not want to be the main event of topic why she wasn’t there.

However, the case she was into bothered her so much, and her partner texted her last night that they handed some information to him about who might be the suspect. The other day, local news of family victims spoke of justice, and they have relied upon the investigator who had the case and get the murderer as soon as possible.

Lane straightened her standing and turned back. “Well, let see each other there. I am one hundred percent our mother where they're if she is not home. You know the family business,” she said, emphasizing the family business. “I am kind of sick of the post I am seeing in my timeline, more death to come,” her twin sister’s last word before she left.

Jane shook her head and grabbed her bag, but her phone interrupted her. She shoved it into her pants pocket. Austin's name was on her phone screen. Without further ado, she slide the answer icon, pressing the phone in her left ear as she walked out of her room. “Hello, why you call?” using her other feet, she closed the door of her room.

But she halted her walked. Was Austin saying it true? A curse left her mouth and make her way towards the mansion's entrance. She saw her sister's car parked in the parking lot, so she's driving? She walk towards her black car and opened the car's lock by pressing the button she was holding and entered her car, driving it to the mansion's gate leaving Adair's premises.

Jane called Austin and ask for his whereabouts. "Where are you?" She asked. The man was on the line tapping her fingers on the steering wheels as she turns the wheels to make her way to their office. "Alright, I'm almost there," She answered and dropped the call, she then step on the breaks parking on the vacant spot, she unlock her seatbelt and opened the car's door grabbing the pile of folders in her car's passenger seat and take the keys with her, turning the car off with the other hand holding her phone she close the car's door and lock it.

She walk towards the office's door greeted by her co-workers she smiled a little at them and walk to the elevator the busy chatter of people in the building, the sound of the printing machines, and the telephone's beeping sound filled the area, she close her eyes inhaling heavily and breathed it out as she opened her eyes, hearing the elevator ding opened she step inside pressing the top floor button to where their office is located. She leaned on the walls of the elevator and waited for the door to open while thinking, who could be the suspect? And they need to hurry because the families of the victims already speak for justice for their daughter who was poorly victimized by the murderer, causing chaos and bother the public's affairs, causing panic for everyone.

She clenched her teeth as the elevator opened, maintaining a straight face as she walks to her table and dropped the pile of folders, relaxing her mind. "1, 2, 3," Jane counted as she breathed in and out. A man was behind her, waiting for her to calm down. "Jane," the officer named Austine was behind her with a concerned expression on his face as he tap her shoulder and waited for her to speak.

"Jane, you have to see this," Austine's tone proves something was wrong, she knew instantly that this was something about she will be in for the rest of her life, as the familiar of guilt rushed inside her when she saw the names listed on the paper she was holding.
