Chapter 2

Author: richer
I stood up, gripping Edward’s phone tightly in my hand, and walked toward the study step by step.

It was only a short distance away.

Yet every step felt impossibly heavy.

I had never entered Edward’s study before.

I never wanted to interfere with his work .

I never expected that the first time I stepped inside would be because I was catching him cheating.

I pushed open the study door.

The room was a complete mess.

Various strange adult toys hung on the walls.

Several unopened boxes of condoms were scattered across the floor.

Last night, when my pregnancy sickness became unbearable, Edward had stayed by my side, desperately trying to find ways to ease my discomfort.

But he hadn’t stayed with me through the entire night like he used to.

He told me he had something important to handle and left in a hurry.

I thought that “important matter” was Family business.

I never imagined it was rushing here to sleep with his mistress.

I returned to the bedroom in a daze.

Sitting on the sofa, my hands trembling, I opened their chat history.

The very first message was sent on the day I found out I was pregnant.

But even though it had only been seven months, their conversation history was shockingly long.

The first message was from the woman named Honey.

[Don, I’m Alice. I just joined the Family today. You said my hair color looked beautiful.]

Edward didn’t reply for many days.

When he finally did, his tone was cold and distant.

“Don’t send messages like this again. I’m not interested in you.”

“My wife has golden hair too. I only complimented yours because it reminded me of her.”

After that, Alice kept sending him photos of her daily life.

Edward never responded.

Until one day, he unexpectedly sent her a message first.

“I was drunk last night and mistook you for my wife.”

“I’ll give you one million dollars. You’d better keep your mouth shut.”

“If my wife finds out, I’ll make sure you disappear from Sicily completely.”

Alice immediately sent him a nude photo.

“Daddy, if you don’t like me, then why were you so passionate last night?”

Ever since Edward became the Don, women who threw themselves at him were countless.

His attitude toward them had always been ruthless and absolute.

His underboss often said:

“In the Don’s world, there are only two kinds of people—his wife and everyone else.”

But this time, he did nothing.

Not only did he fail to push Alice away, but several times, when she acted spoiled and begged for his attention, he even agreed to take provocative photos and videos with her.

He allowed her to post them on the dark web, showing off their relationship to everyone.

My fingers suddenly stopped scrolling when I reached the day I had fallen and nearly lost the baby.

While Edward was by my side comforting me, he had sent Alice a link to a dog collar.

“Wear it. Wait for me tonight.”

The further I scrolled through the messages, the colder my heart became.

My fingertips turned numb.

How was I supposed to believe that during the months I was carrying his child…

During all those nights when I waited for him to come home…

During countless moments when pregnancy hormones left me anxious and sleepless, while I imagined our baby’s future and planned our life together…

He had been tangled up with another woman?

I tossed the phone aside.

My chest felt tight, and breathing became difficult.

The next second, Edward hurried into the room.

He picked up his phone immediately.

He didn’t even spare me a glance.

“Monica, there’s trouble at the casino. I need to go check it out.”

My throat tightened.

“Can’t you let your underboss handle it?”

Edward turned around.

His gaze fell on my chest, and for a brief moment, a trace of disgust flashed through his eyes.

After becoming pregnant, I had gained some weight.

Just walking back and forth twice had caused sweat to soak through my collar.

Edward’s voice carried a hint of impatience.

“ You know that many people refuse to accept me sitting in this position.”

“I have to put in more effort than anyone else.”

After saying that, he left.

He didn’t notice the change in my expression at all.

Ever since I became pregnant, Edward had cared more about my emotions than ever before.

As long as there was even the slightest change in my tone, he would notice immediately and comfort me.

But this time…

He was too eager to see Alice.

His heart wasn’t with me anymore.

How could he hear my sadness when he wasn’t even looking at me?

He didn’t move.He looked up at me, his eyes bloodshot.“Monica, I know I was wrong. I shouldn’t have cheated on you. I shouldn’t have told Alice our secrets. And I shouldn’t have abandoned you when you needed me most. Just give me a chance to make it up to you… You can hit me, curse at me, make me do whatever you want. I’ll do anything…”I walked over to him and crouched down.Gently, I closed the box in his palm and pushed it back toward him.“Edward, I don’t hate you anymore,” I said. “I really don’t. I’ve thought about a lot over these past two years. Hating someone is exhausting. I don’t want to waste the rest of my life hating you.”His lips trembled.“Then…”“But I don’t love you anymore, either.”I looked him straight in the eyes and spoke each word clearly.“You used up every bit of love I had for you. .”Edward grabbed my wrist, his grip painfully tight.“I’m not leaving… I can wait. I’ll wait as long as it takes…”I slowly pulled my hand free, stood up, and took a step back.

I opened a flower shop in the outskirts of New York. The shop was small, but business was good. The neighbors loved coming by to buy my flowers.Lilith came to visit me once, and as she was leaving, she held my hand and said, “Monica, you look so much more at ease than you used to.”I smiled but said nothing. It was true. I hadn’t woken up in a panic in the middle of the night for a long time. I hadn’t dreamed about Edward in a long time, either. That afternoon, I was changing the water for a bouquet of white lilies when the bell above the door rang. Without looking up, I said, “Welcome. What would you like to buy?”There were no footsteps. No one said a word.Confused, I looked up and froze.Edward was standing in the doorway. He had lost a great deal of weight. His cheekbones jutted sharply from his gaunt face, his eye sockets were sunken, and he was wearing a gray overcoat with a wrinkled collar. He was clutching something in his hand so tightly that his knuckles had gone white.“Mo

Edward had only one thought in his mind.He had to get Monica back.He had to tell her that she was the only woman he had ever loved. On the way, he called his underboss to ask about Monica’s whereabouts. The underboss hesitated before answering.“Don, the Donna left Sicily last night.”“I called you, but Miss Alice answered. She said you already knew and told me not to worry about it.”Edward felt as if he had stopped breathing.Monica had left? How could she bear to leave him?How could she leave without even caring about their child? The underboss hesitated again.“There’s something else you should probably know.”“The Donna lost the baby because Lorenzo and his men cornered her and beat her.”Edward couldn’t believe what he had heard. He asked again.“What did you say?”“Monica lost the baby?” Edward’s grip on the phone tightened abruptly, his knuckles turning white. He pulled up the phone and immediately turned the car around.Alice was still lying on her bedroom bed, clutching h

Late that night, Edward returned home with Alice. He finally noticed that the wedding portrait was gone.A wave of unease washed over him, as if something was slipping away from him.“Don, I wore the outfit you love most today…”For the first time, Edward coldly pushed Alice away and walked straight toward Monica’s room.Just one glance was enough to leave him frozen in place.Every single one of Monica’s belongings was gone.Edward sat down on the sofa and irritably lit a cigarette.A soft body pressed against his back.Thinking it was Monica, he smiled.“Monica, don’t run away from home again next time. You’re not a child anymore!”But the voice that sounded beside his ear was Alice’s soft and vulnerable one.“Don, do you not love me anymore?”She used the sweet, delicate tone he usually loved so much. But now, Edward found it unbearably irritating.Suppressing his impatience, he coaxed her.“Of course I do.”Alice leaned in to kiss his lips.“Then, Don, you’re not allowed to think a

Lilith had already arranged a private flight to the United States.By the time I arrived at the airport, the sky was beginning to darken.I didn’t tell anyone where I was going.Only Lilith knew.I deleted my old phone number.I changed my contact information.I left behind almost everything that connected me to the woman I had once been. When the plane finally took off, I rested my forehead against the cold window. The gray-blue Mediterranean slowly disappeared beneath the clouds.I stared at it until my eyes began to ache. This was the place where I had grown up.The place where my parents had died. The place where I had met Edward. The place where I had loved him.And the place where I had lost my child.I closed my eyes.“Goodbye, Sicily.”A tear slipped silently down my cheek.Lilith stayed beside me until I was settled in a small apartment on the outskirts of the city. She wanted to stay.I refused.“You have to go back.”“Monica…”“I’ll be fine.”She looked at me for a long time

“The child is kicking me. I feel so uncomfortable, Don.”Alice raised her voice, deliberately drowning out what I had just said.Edward immediately scooped her into his arms and rushed toward the doctor’s office. He left me with only one sentence.“Get some rest. I’ll come back to see you and the baby.”I stood there in a daze, watching them disappear around the corner. He was going to come back.He was going to come back to see me and our baby. But there was no baby left to see.My hand slowly drifted to my lower abdomen. It was so flat that I could hardly believe that only a few hours ago, there had still been a tiny life growing inside me.Our child. The child I had spent seven months protecting.Edward had once told me he wanted a son who looked just like him or a girl who looked just like me.All of it was gone. And Edward didn’t even know.I had told him.He simply hadn’t listened. The man who had once sworn that I was the most important person in his life had walked away .I wip
