Chapter 3

Penulis: Maya Birchwood
She gave me a reassuring look. "I know this 'The Butcher' guy. He's all bark, no bite. Probably just a big misunderstanding."

A misunderstanding?

An icy dread settled over me as I met Caroline's gaze.

At that moment, my phone buzzed once more.

With shaking hands, I clicked on the cursed link to the second-hand site.

Adrian, known as 'The Butcher,' had left another furious comment.

[Damn it! The house is empty. What is this? A bait-and-switch?]

Jeffrey's reply was right below that comment.

[Easy, man! The merchandise is just next door with the landlord, a little holdover. Consider it a special bonus to up the thrill.]

[My landlord, whom I’ve come to think of as a sister, is a real knockout. She hinted that, for the right price, she’d join in on the fun.]

Suddenly, my world spun.

I felt my blood run cold, and my phone nearly slipped from my grasp, tumbling into the couch cushions.

I looked up sharply at Caroline.

She was casually leaning against the bedroom doorway, a half-smile playing on her lips as she eyed my waist, fixated on the red mole there.

"Babe, that mole of yours is quite the eye-catcher. No wonder Jeffrey thinks you're a real catch."

Caroline's voice took on a teasing, oily quality.

"Since you're here, why not stay? Adrian will be here any minute now.

"Relax, Adrian's a big spender: two grand a pop."

She gave me a once-over. "What's your dance teaching gig pay you in a month? You bust your butt and can't even afford a decent purse."

I recoiled in fear, desperate to bolt for the door.

However, Caroline's place was locked up tight, the security chain firmly in place.

She advanced, her heels clicking ominously on the hardwood floor.

"Jeffrey has racked up a 30 grand debt to Adrian playing cards here.

"Settling his tab with you is just the way things are done.

"Make Adrian happy tonight, and you're square.

"But if you don't play ball..."

Caroline let out an icy laugh. "Jeffrey's hand? It's still in Adrian's grip. Want him to end up crippled?"

Right then, a knock echoed from the other side of the door.

Thump, thump, thump.

It was not loud, but it was enough to suffocate the air in the room.

Then, Adrian's sleazy voice seeped through. "Caroline, open up. I'm catching a whiff of something sweet!"

The knocking felt like a blow to my very soul.

I could not just sit there and wait for the end!

The second Caroline spun around to unlock the door, I bolted for her bedroom like I was possessed.

A king-sized bed dominated the room, its underside a jumble of boxes that left just a sliver of space.

I did not give a second thought to the grime as I wriggled into that narrow hideaway.

The hanging bedsheet obscured my view, but it could not muffle the sounds from outside.

The deadbolt clicked open.

Adrian's labored breaths and the click-clack of his dress shoes echoed into the room.

"Where's this person? Jeffrey said she's being kept in here, right?" Adrian's voice was tinged with a thrill that sent my stomach into flips.

"Yeah, she was just in here, bawling her eyes out." Caroline's voice dripped with a sweetness that made my stomach turn. "Probably got shy and tucked herself away. How about a little game of hide and seek?"

Another voice chimed in, one I recognized all too well.

"Take your time, Adrian. I'll keep watch at the door.

"Just holler if you need me; I'll be right outside."

Jeffrey's tone was all grovel and no grit, nothing like a husband should sound, more like a servant begging for scraps.

  • When Love Went to Market   Chapter 10

"Hello, 911?"I need to report a crime. There's human trafficking and a huge fight going down right now. It might be gang-related, too."It's happening at the old factory on the outskirts."The fight was in full swing when the wail of police sirens split the night.I punched in 911, and with a single click, I blasted all the surveillance footage and audio evidence I had gathered over the last few days straight to the cops' inbox.A fleet of squad cars tore onto the scene, sirens screaming. SWAT came down like a force of nature, swiftly getting a grip on the chaos and rounding up the whole lot like it was nothing. Those traffickers in the vans, about to ditch and run in the chaos, were slammed into the mud by a few officers."Freeze! Police!"The ropes, the knockout drugs, and the dirty deal logs yanked from their ride left them speechless. This time, with the evidence and the crooks in hand, there was no getting away.Poor Jeffrey even got his leg snapped in the scuffle.Dra

"Perfect," I murmured, a chilly grin spreading across my face. The following morning, Jeffrey did something out of the ordinary: he bought breakfast. As we sat at the table, he threw out an idea. "Ella, you've had a tough time lately. Let's head back to our old stomping grounds to unwind, okay? My mom's been asking about you, too."I lit up, all smiles and sparkly eyes. "For real? That's awesome! I've been itching to get out and about."I jumped into action, packing our bags with a few of my prettiest dresses thrown in for good measure.Meanwhile, Jeffrey was out on the balcony, sneakily texting Caroline. Little did he know, I was watching his every move.[The fish took the bait. Get the car ready.]The day before our trip, thanks to a tip from Yara, I managed to snag Adrian's wife's contact info.Adrian, it turned out, was pretty much under his wife's thumb. His wife was a force to be reckoned with: a butcher by trade, twice his size, and with zero tolerance for her husband's e

Jeffrey's secret cash stash was the last place I expected to find a black USB drive. When I plugged it into my computer, a chill ran down my spine.Hundreds of gigabytes of voyeuristic photos and videos filled the screen. It was not just me; there were other girls, some in school uniforms, some housewives.Caroline and Jeffrey were not just dabbling in a dark hobby; they were seasoned criminals. They belonged to a ring that preyed on women, trapping them into paying off debts or worse, engaging in unspeakable trades.Yara had my back, and together, we got our hands on a full set of tiny spy cameras.I had 15 days to set my trap.I hid them in the bedroom's air conditioner vents and the living room's router, and I even took a gamble and tucked one into a pot of Caroline's dead succulents.I cleaned the house from top to bottom and replaced everything Jeffrey had broken.I had to put on a show.I had to act like I was defeated, like I had forgiven him, ready to swallow my prid

They took in the sight, the crowd, the blood on the floor, and me with the scissors in hand. The officer in charge gestured firmly as he said, "Take them all in! To the precinct!"In the back of the squad car, Jeffrey was cuffed across from me.He kept trying to get into my head, whispering with a chilling tone, "Ella, keep your mouth shut at the station."We're married. If I end up behind bars, what will happen to you?"The harsh glare of the police station's lights made me feel dizzy.I thought that with Yara's video and my injuries, Jeffrey and Adrian would be locked up for good. However, reality hit me like a slap in the face.Jeffrey was adamant it was just a 'domestic spat.'He claimed the post was a 'joke.' He said that it was just a bit of fun between spouses. He said the livestream was a stunt to 'boost followers,' all part of a script.Adrian was even more slippery. He pointed to his head wound with a brazen look."Officer, I was just there to collect a debt."I

"Come on, open up. I want that bounty, too." Yara's fingers were already on the doorknob.I shut my eyes, feeling a chill as if I had fallen into a frozen abyss.'So, this is my so-called bestie?' I wondered.Crash! Before Yara could twist the knob, the door burst open with a violent kick from the outside.I shrieked, stumbling backward. However, it was not Jeffrey and Adrian storming in.A squad of uniformed security guards, wielding riot gear and shields, took charge. The team leader, a towering figure and the community's chief of security, roared, silencing the chaos."What's the trouble here? Who's causing a scene?"The gatekeeper called it in. He said there was an armed intrusion! Everybody down!"It turned out that my panicked entrance to the community earlier, scissors in hand, had caught the gatekeeper's eye, triggering a top-level security response. My knees buckled, nearly sending me to the floor. Was I rescued? That was when Jeffrey pushed through the crowd.S

I brandished the scissors, slashing in a frenzy. "Back off! Everyone, just back off!"The scissors sliced Caroline's arm as she tried to intervene, and she let out a sharp cry, recoiling.Barefoot, I stepped through the shards, unlocked the chain, and bolted into the hallway.Adrian's enraged shouts chased after me. "Catch her! Don't let her get away! I'm going to kill her!"Jeffrey, crouching by the door for a smoke, was taken aback by my bloodied figure bolting out.He reached out, trying to reason with me. "Ella, just hear me out...""Get lost!"I did not give him a chance, driving my knee into his groin. He doubled over with a groan, collapsing to the ground.I seized the moment, sprinted down the stairs, and disappeared into the night.I did not stop until I was out of the urban village, where I flagged down a cab.The driver, eyeing my disheveled look and the bloody scissors in my grip, hesitated, nearly too scared to take me."Please, take me to Sunnyvale Residences!
