Chapter 1

However, I was no longer the person I was seven years ago. I no longer had to tread carefully around Joseph Larkin and obey his every command without a shred of dignity.

I said, "There's no reason for me to lie to you, Joseph. I'm already married to someone else."

Joseph cast a sidelong glance at me and said mockingly, "You're still going on about this, Wendy? I'm only here to inform you, not ask for your opinion. I'm marrying Mabel, no matter what you think."

Mabel Reese's glossy black braids hung over her shoulders as she tugged innocently at Joseph's sleeve. "Don't start a fight with Wendy over me, Joseph. You should just send me back."

Despite saying so, Mabel refused to let go of his sleeve. The look she gave me was also full of determined confidence.

Joseph's expression mellowed upon hearing her. "I can't bear to watch you suffer anymore, Mabel. We promised to stay together no matter what. Don't worry. Wendy will agree to whatever I say. I'll make sure you have a proper place by my side."

Years had passed, yet he was still as shameless as ever.

Joseph's expression darkened before I could even say anything. "You've been enjoying the title of my wife all these years, and now it's time to make room for Mabel. She's suffered enough. I won't let you bully her anymore."

I picked up a glass on the side and took a sip of my juice. With a mocking smile, I asked, "And what exactly have I done to her? You'd better have proof if you're going to accuse me."

Joseph immediately frowned, glaring daggers at me. "Don't think you're that important. If it weren't for the fact that you've waited for me for all these years, I would've thrown you out long ago. You wouldn't even have the chance to run your mouth here!"

Throw me out? Joseph didn't have that kind of power.

Besides, where did he get the nerve to think I'd been waiting for him all these years? I had already given up for good the day he abandoned me on our wedding day.

Years back, I waited for Joseph to show up at the altar, but he never did turn up. His car had crashed into the river, leaving only his designated driver alive.

Everyone thought he was long dead for all these years. I even picked out a spot for his memorial.

While everyone cursed me for bringing bad luck to my husband, it was another man from the Larkin family who stepped up to marry me.

I would have forgotten Joseph entirely if he hadn't come back all of a sudden. As such, I felt nothing for him even when he reappeared years later.

I said, "Let me say this one last time. Joseph, we're not married. As far as the world is concerned, you're already dead. Who you marry has nothing to do with me."

Joseph scoffed. "Now that's more like it! If you hadn't clung to me back then, I wouldn't have had to go through that trouble to run off to the capital."

So something like that really did happen. I knew it.

That river wasn't even fast—it was a popular swimming spot for kids during the summer.

Besides, how could Joseph possibly be dead when his designated driver even managed to get away?

He was the same as ever—always putting his own feelings first and bearing no shred of responsibility.

Back then, when news of Joseph's death first spread, his mother, Lisa Elridge, fainted on the spot. Not long after she woke up, she fell seriously ill, looking as if she had one foot in the grave.

Just then, Adam Larkin, one of his cousins who had hurried over, heard what he said. "What are you talking about, Joseph? She's the plant manager's wife now."

"The plant manager's wife?"

At that, Mabel's gaze darted slyly before asking with feigned innocence, "Didn't you say that your grandfather would leave the plant only to you?"

Joseph's expression stiffened slightly. He then turned to look at me coldly and said, "I'm my father's only son. Who else would the plant go to if not me?"

Truth to be told, Jonathan never finished telling me his name back then. I hadn't made it out clearly.Or rather, I never imagined it could have been him.The protagonist of the entire farce had been wrong from the very beginning. From the very start, it had been a mistake. The one I had longed for all these years was Jonathan, not Joseph."Why didn't you tell me in all our years of marriage?" I couldn't understand.Jonathan's eyes were filled with raging emotions. "It's fine if you can't figure it out. The things I do will only be meaningful if you were to find out about it yourself."Eventually, I couldn't hold back my tears.I was such an idiot.I sobbed so hard I could barely breathe. Jonathan reached out to gently wipe away my tears. "I love you, Wendy."I buried my face into his neck, nodding profusely. I was beyond happy. In the past seven years, Jonathan had never told me he loved me. He indulged me in everything and was gentle with me, but rarely said sweet things to

Mabel was standing nearby, looking stunned.I glanced at her and deliberately asked, "What about Mabel? You were the one who brought her back. What about her?"Joseph replied, "You don't have to worry about her. I only want an answer from you. Are you willing? Or rather, what does it take for you to be willing?"I'll bring you to the capital—it's a big place. No one will know us there or even find out that you've had a child with someone else. Let's go to the capital and live like we did in the past, okay?"I scoffed. Before I could even reply, Mabel rushed over tearfully. "How can you do this to me, Joseph? You said you'll marry me!"Joseph shoved her away irritably before turning to look right at me. "I only need an answer from you. Are you up for it?""Joseph!" Mabel yelled, almost hysterical. "That's impossible! You have to marry me!"She then turned to glare at me. "You're Joseph's aunt now, Wendy! But you're still so insistent on seducing him. How shameless can you be?"T

However, the way Joseph lost his temper that day was already etched into Bobby's mind.Bobby pursed his lips. He turned to me and complained in his childish voice, exclaiming, "He's a meanie, Mommy! I don't want to play with a meanie!"Jonathan smiled and patted Bobby's head. He then turned to scold Joseph. "Shut up and eat your food!"Joseph's face tensed up after being embarrassed over and over again.Lisa quickly changed the subject and said, "The food's getting cold. Let's eat!"Mabel was the one getting the short end of the stick. Not only had Joseph ignored her, but he didn't even bother preparing a set of cutlery for her.She shook with anger after realizing he was carefully trying to win me, Jonathan, and Bobby over, yet she was completely powerless against it.I didn't really enjoy my dinner. As soon as we were done, Bobby pestered Jonathan to play with him on his wooden horse. They then went home to bring it over, with Bobby dragging Jonathan along in a hurry as they

These days, the entire Larkin family danced to Jonathan's tune. No one dared to disobey his word.Shocked, Lisa immediately tried to pull Joseph away. However, he shrugged her off and took a step backward. "I'm not leaving! Wendy's my wife! Why did you steal your own nephew's wife, Uncle Jonathan?" he exclaimed. At that, everyone stared at Joseph in disbelief. I, too, was stunned. Was throwing a tantrum the only thing he had learned after all these years? How could he still say something like this now?Back then, news of Joseph's disappearance had spread in the town. At the same time, word of my marriage to Jonathan was everywhere.Everyone knew about it. All but Joseph, who still refused to believe it until now.I glared at him. "Watch your words, Joseph! I'm your uncle's wife now! I've been married to Jonathan for seven years. "I'm not as shameless as you are! Besides, you've already brought Mabel home. You should watch what you say all the more!"Joseph gritted his teeth.

Lisa stopped crying. "Everyone thought you were dead back then. Wendy ended up marrying Jonathan, and Bobby is indeed their son."If you were alive, why didn't you write back to us? Do you know how I've been all these years? I've wished more than once that it had been me who died that day!"Joseph's knees weakened. "I just… I just wanted to go out and make a name for myself. I figured I'd come back once I've sorted things out. How could you let Wendy marry someone else?" He was way past the age of wanting to go out and make a name for himself. He even chose to disappear on our wedding day. Did he think I was easy to fool?Joseph left everyone behind, forcing me to carry the blame and shame—just so he could go out and have his little adventure? As expected, he was still as selfish as ever. I didn't even know when he turned into someone like this.Back then, Fiona Hayes and I planned a trip downtown to buy some hair clips.Halfway there, her younger brother came running with an u

Joseph, overwhelmed by his rage, failed to notice the newcomer's voice. However, everyone else looked relieved.Adam released his hold on Joseph. "You're finally back, Uncle Jonathan!"Jonathan walked in and took in the scene. I was sitting on the floor, looking disheveled with my hair tangled and my cheek swollen as I held Bobby. His expression darkened immediately as he swept the room with a sharp gaze. However, Joseph was blinded by his rage and failed to notice Jonathan's expression. He started ranting the moment he saw Jonathan. He cried, "You're here, Uncle Jonathan! Help me out here! This shameless bitch, Wendy, actually cheated behind my back—and her son's already old enough to go to kindergarten! I have to teach them a good lesson!"Silence fell over the room at once.Jonathan looked up slightly, gazing at Joseph as if he were filth. He then struck Joseph across the face. "Open your eyes wide and have a good look. Wendy's my wife, and Bobby's my son!"Joseph was stunne
