Chapter 2

Author: Ninja Soilwater
I looked at Joseph, at a loss for words.

I couldn't help but wonder if he had lost his mind. Did he realize how ridiculous he sounded?

Adam exclaimed in shock, "What nonsense are you spouting, Joseph? Wendy is married to Uncle Jonathan. The plant now belongs to him."

Back when Joseph disappeared, I sat alone on the aisle, dazed.

Everyone in town knew that my husband died on the way to our wedding. They cursed me for bringing bad luck to my husband and being an agent of misfortune.

Every word cut into me, making me shiver and unable to face them.

Jonathan Larkin was the one who stepped forward and said he was willing to marry me. He was the one who proved to them that I wasn't what they said.

Jonathan personally pulled me out of my despair. So why wouldn't I marry him?

Joseph mocked, saying, "Everyone knows Uncle Jonathan is a man of big dreams. A woman like Wendy would never be worth his time."

Jonathan was known to be a legend in the town. He once took a small amount of money and struck out for the big city on his own, securing deal after deal before returning to take over as the plant manager.

It wasn't an exaggeration to say that he had built half of the Larkin family's foundation. No one in the family dared to cross him.

To this day, I still couldn't understand why Jonathan had chosen me. After all, there were plenty of women far prettier and more capable than I was.

Adam was still trying to get Joseph to believe him. "Just ask Grandpa if you don't believe in me, Joseph."

Joseph scoffed disdainfully. He then stepped out to ask an elderly lady and a child. Both gave him the same answer.

His expression gradually darkened before turning around to glare at me. "You're really shameless, Wendy. I've only been away for a few years, yet you've bribed the entire town and even worked together to deceive me!"

I remained calm in my seat. I couldn't be bothered to waste my time arguing with him.

Everyone knew I married Jonathan. Whether Joseph believed it or not wasn't my concern. He had always been wild and unruly since he was young—a product of being spoiled to the core.

Worried that he might stir up more trouble pestering me, Adam hurried off to find someone else. "Go fetch Uncle Jonathan from downtown now! Get him back right now!"

Jonathan left for downtown early in the morning to check the plant's sales figures, and both Mr. Larkin Senior and Lisa were also out.

Otherwise, Joseph would never have had the chance to raise his voice at me here.

Just as the tension was growing thicker, my son, Bobby Larkin, suddenly ran over. "Come play with me, Mommy!"

Joseph completely lost it the moment he saw Bobby.

His bloodshot eyes flicked back and forth between me and Bobby. After all, Bobby was practically a miniature version of me—only in the form of a young boy.

With a trembling hand, Joseph remarked accusingly. "You even went and had a bastard child! Tell me, whose brat is this?"

Although Bobby couldn't understand what Joseph meant, he could feel Joseph's animosity.

He puffed out his chest and planted himself right in front of me. "Who are you calling a bastard child? Daddy says anyone with a filthy mouth is just begging for a beating!"

Bobby was only six years old. He had never met Joseph before.

Joseph instinctively snapped back at him. "How dare you talk back to me, you bastard child!"

My anger flared.

Bobby was the son whom I carried to full term and brought into this world. I didn't spoil him rotten, and he wasn't someone Joseph could just curse at.

"Watch your words, Joseph! Otherwise, you'll regret it!" I said.

The malice in Mabel's eyes was evident as she smiled. "This child seemed old enough. Don't tell me you've already had him before you got married to Joseph?"

Her accusation was purely baseless.

Joseph got even more livid at that, and his gaze sent daggers.

Nothing enraged a man more than the thought of being cheated on, especially by a woman who once worshipped the ground he walked on.

I shot Mabel a glance and replied, "He's six."

Joseph exclaimed, "Have you no shame, Wendy? I was only gone for a few years—seven, at most—and you already have a six-year-old son?"

Seven years, at most?

We had only known each other for a few years. How many years would I have to wait in my lifetime?

Besides, Joseph was the one who betrayed me first.

Adam anxiously explained, "You're probably unaware of this, Joseph, but this is Uncle Jonathan's son!"

Truth to be told, Jonathan never finished telling me his name back then. I hadn't made it out clearly.Or rather, I never imagined it could have been him.The protagonist of the entire farce had been wrong from the very beginning. From the very start, it had been a mistake. The one I had longed for all these years was Jonathan, not Joseph."Why didn't you tell me in all our years of marriage?" I couldn't understand.Jonathan's eyes were filled with raging emotions. "It's fine if you can't figure it out. The things I do will only be meaningful if you were to find out about it yourself."Eventually, I couldn't hold back my tears.I was such an idiot.I sobbed so hard I could barely breathe. Jonathan reached out to gently wipe away my tears. "I love you, Wendy."I buried my face into his neck, nodding profusely. I was beyond happy. In the past seven years, Jonathan had never told me he loved me. He indulged me in everything and was gentle with me, but rarely said sweet things to

Mabel was standing nearby, looking stunned.I glanced at her and deliberately asked, "What about Mabel? You were the one who brought her back. What about her?"Joseph replied, "You don't have to worry about her. I only want an answer from you. Are you willing? Or rather, what does it take for you to be willing?"I'll bring you to the capital—it's a big place. No one will know us there or even find out that you've had a child with someone else. Let's go to the capital and live like we did in the past, okay?"I scoffed. Before I could even reply, Mabel rushed over tearfully. "How can you do this to me, Joseph? You said you'll marry me!"Joseph shoved her away irritably before turning to look right at me. "I only need an answer from you. Are you up for it?""Joseph!" Mabel yelled, almost hysterical. "That's impossible! You have to marry me!"She then turned to glare at me. "You're Joseph's aunt now, Wendy! But you're still so insistent on seducing him. How shameless can you be?"T

However, the way Joseph lost his temper that day was already etched into Bobby's mind.Bobby pursed his lips. He turned to me and complained in his childish voice, exclaiming, "He's a meanie, Mommy! I don't want to play with a meanie!"Jonathan smiled and patted Bobby's head. He then turned to scold Joseph. "Shut up and eat your food!"Joseph's face tensed up after being embarrassed over and over again.Lisa quickly changed the subject and said, "The food's getting cold. Let's eat!"Mabel was the one getting the short end of the stick. Not only had Joseph ignored her, but he didn't even bother preparing a set of cutlery for her.She shook with anger after realizing he was carefully trying to win me, Jonathan, and Bobby over, yet she was completely powerless against it.I didn't really enjoy my dinner. As soon as we were done, Bobby pestered Jonathan to play with him on his wooden horse. They then went home to bring it over, with Bobby dragging Jonathan along in a hurry as they

These days, the entire Larkin family danced to Jonathan's tune. No one dared to disobey his word.Shocked, Lisa immediately tried to pull Joseph away. However, he shrugged her off and took a step backward. "I'm not leaving! Wendy's my wife! Why did you steal your own nephew's wife, Uncle Jonathan?" he exclaimed. At that, everyone stared at Joseph in disbelief. I, too, was stunned. Was throwing a tantrum the only thing he had learned after all these years? How could he still say something like this now?Back then, news of Joseph's disappearance had spread in the town. At the same time, word of my marriage to Jonathan was everywhere.Everyone knew about it. All but Joseph, who still refused to believe it until now.I glared at him. "Watch your words, Joseph! I'm your uncle's wife now! I've been married to Jonathan for seven years. "I'm not as shameless as you are! Besides, you've already brought Mabel home. You should watch what you say all the more!"Joseph gritted his teeth.

Lisa stopped crying. "Everyone thought you were dead back then. Wendy ended up marrying Jonathan, and Bobby is indeed their son."If you were alive, why didn't you write back to us? Do you know how I've been all these years? I've wished more than once that it had been me who died that day!"Joseph's knees weakened. "I just… I just wanted to go out and make a name for myself. I figured I'd come back once I've sorted things out. How could you let Wendy marry someone else?" He was way past the age of wanting to go out and make a name for himself. He even chose to disappear on our wedding day. Did he think I was easy to fool?Joseph left everyone behind, forcing me to carry the blame and shame—just so he could go out and have his little adventure? As expected, he was still as selfish as ever. I didn't even know when he turned into someone like this.Back then, Fiona Hayes and I planned a trip downtown to buy some hair clips.Halfway there, her younger brother came running with an u

Joseph, overwhelmed by his rage, failed to notice the newcomer's voice. However, everyone else looked relieved.Adam released his hold on Joseph. "You're finally back, Uncle Jonathan!"Jonathan walked in and took in the scene. I was sitting on the floor, looking disheveled with my hair tangled and my cheek swollen as I held Bobby. His expression darkened immediately as he swept the room with a sharp gaze. However, Joseph was blinded by his rage and failed to notice Jonathan's expression. He started ranting the moment he saw Jonathan. He cried, "You're here, Uncle Jonathan! Help me out here! This shameless bitch, Wendy, actually cheated behind my back—and her son's already old enough to go to kindergarten! I have to teach them a good lesson!"Silence fell over the room at once.Jonathan looked up slightly, gazing at Joseph as if he were filth. He then struck Joseph across the face. "Open your eyes wide and have a good look. Wendy's my wife, and Bobby's my son!"Joseph was stunne
