Maya was halfway through her Calculus lecture when her phone buzzed.

She ignored it. Professor Mitchell didn’t tolerate phones.

It buzzed again.

And again.

She glanced down. Three texts from Idris.

Her stomach dropped.

She grabbed her bag and stood up. “Sorry. Emergency.”

Professor Mitchell stared. “Ms. Chen—”

But she was already out the door.

In the hallway, she opened the messages.

7:32 AM — He texted.

7:33 AM — My father. He wants to meet. Today.

7:34 AM — I can’t do

  • When Silence Met Fire   The Morning After

Maya woke Saturday morning to sunlight and the smell of pancakes. She blinked. Sat up. Jess was at the mini-fridge, flipping pancakes on the illegal griddle. The room smelled like butter and maple syrup. "What time is it?" "Nine." Jess slid a pancake onto a plate and carried it over. "You slept late." "I slept late?" "You were up half the night." Jess sat on her bed with her own plate. "I heard you tossing." Maya took the plate. "You heard me?" "You're not quiet when you're thinking." Maya cut into the pancake. "What's that supposed to mean?" "It means you were thinking about August. About leaving. About all of it." Jess pointed her fork. "You do that thing where you sigh every few minutes. Like you're trying to push the thoughts out." Maya stopped chewing. "I'm not mad," Jess said. "I'm just saying I know you." They ate in silence. Then Jess set her fork down. "I texted Marcus back." Maya looked up. "What did you say?" "That I needed more time. That I wasn't saying no

  • When Silence Met Fire   The Meeting

Maya sat in the coffee shop at 2:45 PM. Corner booth. Back to the wall. Full view of the door. Just like she promised. She had a book open in front of her, but she hadn't turned a page in ten minutes. Her phone was face-up on the table. No messages yet. Jess had left at 2:30. Said she wanted to walk. Clear her head. Maya offered to come. Jess said no. So here she sat. Waiting. The door chimed at 2:52. Maya looked up. Marcus walked in. Alone. He was thinner than the last time she'd seen him. Dark circles under his eyes. He scanned the room, found an empty table near the window, sat down. Ordered nothing. Just sat there, hands flat on the table, waiting. The door chimed again at 2:58. Jess walked in. She saw Marcus immediately. He stood. She crossed the room. Sat across from him. Maya watched. --- They talked for an hour. Maya couldn't hear the words, but she could see their shapes. Marcus leaning forward. Jess sitting back. Marcus talking, hands moving. Jess listening,

  • When Silence Met Fire   The Day Before

Maya woke Thursday morning to the sound of Jess's closet door sliding open and shut. Open. Shut. Open. She cracked her eyes open. Gray light filtered through the curtains. Jess stood in front of the closet, a pile of shirts on the bed behind her. "What time is it?" "Seven." Jess pulled out a blue sweater, held it up, tossed it on the bed. "Go back to sleep." Maya sat up instead. "You're not going to find the perfect shirt. It doesn't exist." Jess paused. Her hand was on a gray cardigan. "That's not helpful." "It's honest." Jess pulled the cardigan out anyway. Held it against herself. Looked in the mirror on the back of the door. "The gray one is boring." "The gray one is safe. You're already nervous. You don't need to worry about your clothes too." Jess stared at her reflection. Then hung the cardigan back. Grabbed the blue sweater instead. "I hate that you're right." "I hate that you're wrong about me being right." Jess almost smiled. Almost. --- At 7:30, they walked to

  • When Silence Met Fire   The Wednesday

Maya woke Wednesday morning to rain tapping the window. She lay still, watching the drops trail down the glass. The room was gray. Jess's bed was empty, sheets tangled, pillow on the floor. Already gone. Her phone showed 8:45. She'd slept through her alarm. She sat up. Rubbed her face. No texts. No missed calls. The rain continued. Steady. Unrelenting. --- She dressed slowly. Jeans. A hoodie. Shoes she didn't care about getting wet. The dining hall was sparse at 9:30. A few students with coffee. Someone reading a textbook in the corner. The usual crowd hadn't braved the weather. She got oatmeal. Found a table near the window. Watched the rain. At 10, her phone buzzed. Jess: Class cancelled. Professor stuck at home. Rain flooded the parking lot. Maya typed: You coming to the dining hall? Already here. Back corner. She looked up. Jess was waving from across the room, a cup of coffee in hand. Maya grabbed her tray and crossed over. Jess's hair was damp. Her jacket hung on

  • When Silence Met Fire   The Space Between

Maya's alarm went off at 7:15 AM. She slapped the phone screen until it stopped. Lay still for a moment, staring at the ceiling. The crack near the window that she'd noticed weeks ago was still there. She traced it with her eyes from the frame to the corner. Monday. Across the room, Jess stirred. "Turn that off." "It is off." "Turn it off harder." Maya swung her legs out of bed. The floor was cold. She grabbed her towel and headed for the shower. --- The dining hall was sparse at 8 AM. A few students with coffee cups, heads bent over phones. Someone asleep on a couch in the corner, mouth open, phone dangling from one hand. The fluorescent lights hummed overhead. Maya got oatmeal. Found a table near the window. Pulled out her phone. No messages. She was halfway through her bowl when a tray landed across from her. Jess dropped into the seat, hair still wet, dark circles under her eyes. She was wearing Maya's hoodie. "You look like you didn't sleep." "I didn't." Jess grabb

  • When Silence Met Fire   Just Us

Maya woke at 10 AM to an empty room. Jess's bed was messy. Sheets everywhere. Pillow on the floor. A note on the desk in Jess's chaotic handwriting. Coffee run. Stay put. — J Maya stared at the note. Then lay back down. Last night drifted through her mind. The restaurant. Her mom's laugh. Idris relaxed in a way she'd never seen. The way he'd squeezed her hand under the table. Her phone buzzed. Idris: You awake? Barely. Same. Couldn't sleep. Why not? Kept replaying last night. Your mom. Dinner. All of it. She smiled. Me too. Your mom texted me. Maya sat up. She what? Said she had a nice time. Told me to take care of you. That's her. She added a heart. Maya laughed. She does that. I said thank you. She added another heart. Now you're trapped. I know. It's nice. She stared at the screen. Yeah. It is. --- At 10:30, the door banged open. Jess walked in carrying two coffee cups and a paper bag. She kicked the door shut behind her. "You're awake. Good." "Your no
