Chapter 3

Author: Red Hot Fish
Eliza stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, lost in thought.

I suddenly remembered that this was exactly how I first met her.

I had gone looking for her, utterly determined to punch her and vent my fury, only to end up drenched to the bone by a sudden downpour.

But Eliza was battered and bleeding, huddled in a corner. She had timidly offered me her jacket before shrinking back into the shadows.

Our parents' sins shouldn't have been ours to bear.

Driven by guilt and a desperate need to make amends, Eliza treated me extremely well.

She would slip warm breakfast into my desk drawer and wait in line for two hours just to save me the best spot in the library. And when Mom had a psychotic episode and lashed out, Eliza threw herself in front of me, taking the blows meant for me.

I thought she was a hero. She was so incredibly brave.

Despite her pain, Eliza would still reach out to wipe my tears.

Her eyes would shine as she carried the weight of everything with a smile. "Silly. I'll protect you from now on."

Teenage feelings were always a tangled, dormant thing, but by senior year, I finally realized what was hidden beneath that bravery.

Eliza had been walking toward me the entire time. I wanted to be brave for once and ask her to be mine.

I wrote draft after draft, leaving the floor buried under a sea of colorful papers.

But I never anticipated that Ryder would go through everyone's bags during the parent-teacher meeting that afternoon.

From there, everything spun violently out of control. I was quoted calling Eliza the daughter of a homewrecker, trash with inferior genes who would never amount to anything.

The shock and heartbreak landed Eliza's mother in the hospital. The doctors issued three critical condition notices before she finally slipped away.

Dad locked me inside the house, refusing to let me out to embarrass the family further.

I broke out through the window, desperate to find Eliza and explain. But when I saw her, her gaze was ice, and she was looking at me like I was her worst enemy.

"Falling for you was my mistake—my own stupidity. But what did my mom have to do with any of this? My dad ruined yours, and now you've ruined my mom. We're even now."

She slammed a beautifully wrapped bouquet of roses at my feet. The graduation wishes on the card had blurred into a smudge.

I waited outside Eliza's house until dark, begging on my knees, but she never came to the door.

On my way back, I was dragged into a pitch-black alleyway.

They wanted money, and I handed it over. But when they tossed the wallet Eliza had handmade for me into the dirt like trash, I snapped and fought back.

Outnumbered, they overpowered me. They forced pills down my throat and rained blows down on me with whatever weapons they had.

I struggled to unlock my phone and called my most recent contact. It was Eliza.

"Eliza, please… Help me… Someone's attacking me…"

Her voice cut through the receiver, crystal clear and utterly biting. "Well, congratulations. Didn't you hate people like me the most? Now you're finally down in the mud too. You should be thrilled."

A few sharp beeps followed, and she blocked me.

My desperate plea for survival vanished into a void.

The only things I remembered from that night were the click of the disconnected line and the scent of rotting roses in the air.

By the time I was found, my hand was shattered, and my vocal cords were ruined.

Driven mad by the stress, Dad's mental state deteriorated to the point where he had to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital.

On the day of the exam, out of all the students, only Eliza and I had no parents there to see us off.

That was the last time I ever saw her.

The next time I heard her name, she had been accepted into Javerton University.

I had botched my exams, barely scraping into a low-tier college. I didn't repeat the year, nor did I attend college.

Dad was getting worse, and I needed money—a lot of it.

By my third year working in a sweatshop, my health broke down.

That was when Ryder tracked me down. He explained everything that had truly happened back then and offered to sponsor my return to school.

I just shook my head quietly. "I'm sick. I just want to live. That's all I want."

But by the second round of chemo, my will to survive began to crumble.

Curled up in the hospital bed, I didn't even have the strength to cry.

Meanwhile, Eliza was on television, eloquently sharing her entrepreneurial story.

At the end of the interview, she flashed her engagement ring to the camera and announced she was getting married.

I turned to Ryder and told him I wanted to stop treatment.

Everyone had abandoned me, so I chose to abandon myself too.

I just wanted freedom. I wanted peace.

In my final days, I tried my best to keep my dignity and look normal. I prayed to God to let me see Eliza just one more time. I didn't want to leave this world carrying a lifetime of misunderstandings.

My prayers were answered, and Eliza was brought to my side.

She came to the hospital for a charity event, standing just on the other side of my privacy curtain.

I tried to call her name, but a sudden surge of blood choked the words back down my throat.

Nurses rushed in to resuscitate me, but I could only feel my body growing lighter and lighter.

Eliza seemed to hear me calling her name. She turned around in a hurry, brushing past me as I lay covered by a white sheet.

Ryder had Eliza admitted to the psychiatric hospital because of her deteriorating mental state.Though Allan did his best to suppress the press, rumors that the CEO of Woods Corp was mentally unstable spread like wildfire within half a day. The first message Eliza saw upon waking up was from Theo.He had been vacationing abroad for a while. Since he hadn't returned, Eliza hadn't bothered with him either. She had only replied to a few of his messages here and there, and once Theo realized something was off, he stopped reaching out entirely. His latest text was a notice to break off their engagement.Eliza stared blankly at the screen for a moment before typing a single word in response. "Okay."The corporate interests of their families were deeply intertwined, and since the engagement, their businesses had been mutually beneficial. Calling it off would inevitably trigger a massive shock to both of their stock prices. And with Eliza currently drowning in negative press, she would b

According to Ryder, I was a very strong person.I didn't cry when I missed out on my dream college. I didn't cry when I spent ten hours a day at a sweatshop assembly line. Even when I found out I had leukemia, my eyes remained completely dry."You know what he told me? He said he ran out of tears after that night. I didn't know what had happened to him back then. I thought he was still blaming me. But when I found out, I wished he had hated me. At least then, he wouldn't have lost the will to live entirely."Chemotherapy was agonizing, but the terror of the unknown was worse.Death was closing in, yet the process of getting there was pure torture. Gasping for air in that hospital bed, I felt a deep, overwhelming hatred for the first time in my life. But hate was too heavy a burden, and I no longer had the strength to carry it.I had grabbed Ryder's hand and begged him to take me outside. It was a beautiful day, and we walked along the manicured lawn. Ryder stayed quiet, leaving m

Eliza moved fast. She had barely finished getting her stitches before Allan returned with the information.Deep within an abandoned building on the north side of the city, I came face-to-face with that crowd again.Surprisingly, I wasn't afraid. I even drifted right up to each of them, studying their faces. It turned out the monsters who broke me looked just like anyone else. They all had two eyes and one mouth.Yet, I had done nothing wrong and ended up dead, while they had a list of crimes and were still breathing. How was that fair?By the time Eliza arrived, they had already been brutally beaten. Several of them had faces so swollen they could barely stutter out a word.Whenever Eliza's gaze landed on one of them, they instinctively flinched."You absolute scums of society are still breathing, while the person you hurt died three years ago. Does that sound fair to you?"Kneeling in a neat row, they exchanged bewildered glances. One of the braver ones stuttered out a questi

I had never seen Eliza like this. She froze for a split second, as if she hadn't processed the words. Her eyes widened sharply, and a faint gasp escaped her throat, as though someone had wrapped their hands around her neck.Every ounce of her previous wishful thinking and denial shattered instantly.Eliza opened her mouth, but she couldn't form a single word. She just kept repeating the same phrase over and over. "No way."But reality crashed down mercilessly. The police report left no room for doubt. I was explicitly named as the victim. As Eliza's eyes scanned the medical evaluation—vocal cord damage and secondary-degree trauma—her last shred of hope was crushed.A wave of intense grief and sheer absurdity surged within her, suffocating her. Her eyes flushed red, and a painful sting burned straight up her nose. She tried to steady herself, only to realize she no longer had the strength to control her own body.Slowly letting out a ragged breath, Eliza dug her nails into her

Eliza returned to my grave. The composure she possessed earlier that day was entirely gone. She stumbled through the cemetery, looking haggard and utterly exhausted. Her expensive lambskin heels sank repeatedly into the muddy water, but she didn't even frown. The pink letter had soaked through, bloating and wrinkling in the puddles until the ink bled into an unrecognizable blur.Eliza reached out to pick it up, but the paper only fell apart faster. She froze, softening her touch, but the brief letter had already dissolved into mush. She stood there, looking as though all the life had been drained from her. Her eyes were wide with panic, like a child who had made a mistake.I shook my head and tried to give her a gentle nudge. "Go back, Eliza. Go back to your world. I don't blame you anymore. Really."I used to hate her. I hated her for leaving me in that dark alleyway. I resented her too for pinning our parents' sins on my head. But during these three years of wandering as a g

It was a tiny USB drive with a cartoon cat charm that seemed completely out of character for Ryder.Eliza instantly recognized that it was mine. After all, it was the very first gift she had ever given me. I had never once been embarrassed by it. I used to keep it hooked to my backpack every single day.I expected her to throw it away or leave it behind, but she took it back to her office instead. She tossed it carelessly into a corner of her desk and buried herself in her work.It wasn't until the sun dipped below the horizon that she finally stopped.Staring at the grinning cartoon cat, she rubbed her temples in exhaustion. In the dead silence of the office, a faint murmur escaped her lips. She seemed to be calling someone's name. "Samuel…"Floating in the air, I froze and cautiously waved a hand. "I'm here. I'm right here."Of course, Eliza couldn't hear me. She clenched the flash drive in her fist so tightly I was afraid she might crush it.After a long hesitation, she fi
